Welcome to another Wednesday of GRADitude as we are joined with an incredible guest that helps teach us about one way she leveled up her professional future while still in PT school. We welcome Julie Burrill to the podcast, a 2nd year SPT and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Julie received her CSCS certification between her first and second year of PT school. She educates us on everything you need to know to begin your journey, or even if you are interested but not sure where to start. The CSCS is a specialized certification distributed by the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA). From the layout of the certification test, to a timeline of test preparation, Julie covers it all including her own study tips and resources that helped her pass. While the CSCS certification test is not easy, she reminds us of the value in pursuing ways to not only level up your future career, but also your education in the topics that interest you. The CSCS provides incredible insight on a numerous subjects that, although some may overlap with PT school, allow deeper understanding of nutrition, human movement, exercise science, program design, and more. Take out a pen and paper as you will not want to miss out on all the in-depth information Julie shares with us about her journey to CSCS and how to start yours!

Welcome to another Wednesday, where we have an incredibly important talk about something all Pre-PT's, SPT's and PT grads worry about: paying off physical therapy school debt. While we commonly think about having to sacrifice in order to achieve this, we have an awesome guest that not only achieved this himself, but continues to help educate others with specific advice for new grads and current students. Today we welcome Josh Madonick, DPT and creator of The $PT, a consulting service specifically designed for repayment plans for DPT's ( and designed by DPT's themselves). Josh starts by explaining his own journey, from meeting a student mentor that helped educate him, an incredible class cohort and support system, to even meeting his wife in PT school! After graduating together and moving to the Bay Area, Josh worked as an outpatient PT until he realized he wanted to start something of his own. Not only did Josh start his own cache-based practice, but also created his own financial educational program and book (Say Goodbye to PT Loans) after both him and his wife were able to refinance and pay off both their student debts. He shares important strategies, key steps, and common questions/answers that has helped not only pay it off completely, but also establish habits and long-lasting systems that help individuals towards what makes them truly happy and achieve what best suits their desired lifestyle.

Happy March everybody! Today we are joined by the lovely Jess Bautista, a current SPT who not only discusses her grad school journey, but also talks about topics that are not covered in school, but applies to all of us. Jess begins by sharing the intense transitions she endured transitioning to PT school, from battling new ways to process information to time management. On top of that, she opens up about the external issues that created even more mental and emotional stress, making it harder for her to give 100% in the classroom. From heartbreak to family stress, Jess shares how difficult it was to focus on the heavy workload of PT school with the state of her mental and emotional health at the time. But, thanks to an incredible support system and counselor, Jess was not only able to create internal change, but also grow even further and establish a stronger personal identity that was beyond just a PT student. Jess reminds us of the importance of remembering how to be human and that, despite internal conflicts and external factors that amplify our stress, there are options and outlets that can help us re-build ourselves back up. From getting back into personal hobbies, like painting and content creating, to re-connecting with loved ones who reminded her who she was, Jess was able to focus on herself outside of school as well. While it is easy for grad students to get caught up in our school-related identity, Jess advises us to be a little nicer to ourselves and remember that we are all humans first who all deserve a little more self-love.

Today we have an incredible guest born in 1924 with experiences from all over the world, from serving in the Navy during World War II, to singing in the Royal Opera in London, to helping teach children with learning disabilities in Pittsburgh. We are joined by Conrad, a 96-year-old, 1st generation American that was generous enough to share some of his many stories (and a special singing performance) on the GRADitude podcast. He starts his story with his enlistment into the Navy, eventually becoming a torpedo bomber and gunner aboard an airplane. After the war ended, Conrad pursued his dream of becoming a singer. Originally starting off as a local church and opera singer, he moved on to sing at the Royal Opera House in London for 20 years before returning to the US. Joined by his partner who also shared a love of music, he shares what they experienced in a time where being openly gay was not yet acceptable. Conrad's journey continued at the University of Pittsburgh, where he studied to become a teacher for students with learning disabilities as well as a voice teacher. With a previous student now as his PT, Conrad shares his current experience in physical therapy and what makes up a meaningful patient-PT relationship. Conrad helps open our eyes to the importance of listening to the patients as individuals first, as he shares about hobbies, opinions, and life experiences to help us learn just a little bit more about being human.

On today's episode, we have a very special & importance conversation that goes beyond the current state of healthcare and what is currently taught (or not taught) in PT school classrooms. We are joined by Madison Kirkpatrick, physical therapist, certified strength & condition specialist, and LSVT BIG. She identifies with the pronouns she/her/hers and starts a powerful conversation on justice, inclusivity, and what any current or future PT can do to help patients of all walks of life. Madison began her own journey to PT wanting to actively serve others and persevered to her DPT program with a Masters, research experience and teaching background. She shares her personal experience as a white, female, cisgender member of the LGBTQ+ community, and how, despite having more privilege than other community members, still felt the disparities in healthcare that failed to make her feel safe and welcome as compared to other heterosexual patients. Madison not only started with a student organization at her school aimed to open up the perspective of students and staff to all types of people, but also start the conversation of how all healthcare professionals can be more inclusive in the healthcare field. Madison continues to educate the others (including the listeners of this podcast) on both the LGBTQ+ community and how to make others of all multi-cultural backgrounds, identities, and experiences feel included, represented, and safe.

Grab a seat and get your notebook out since you will want to write down some of the many inspirational quotes and pieces of advice from today's guest. We are happy to be joined by Dr. Deb Howell, a PT who has been dedicated to not only helping increase the wellness of her patients, but also educates other healthcare professionals on the importance of self-care and mental health. But first, we get to know Deb's personal journey from starting in the Navy, where she was introduced to the world of PT by a friend, to achieving her Bachelor's of PT while being a mom of two and commuting 100 miles a day. She discusses the personal fears and barriers she had to endure, on top of teachers that seemed to shut down her vision of becoming a PT. Deb shares her experience as a patient losing function after an injury led her to discover a PT that helped her regain physical function, and also opened her eyes to the importance of being PT who is present and listens to what the patient really needs. Despite all the hardships, Deb now discusses the meaning of being a clinician who can take care of themselves. This not only allows PT's to be a resource, but also an essential aspect to the improvement of their well-being and future selves. With years of personal experience, both a Bachelor of PT and a DPT, and a passion for self-care, take a seat as we take in all types of 2021 inspiration with Dr. Deb.

Today we welcome our last guest of the month who brings all type of inspiration and passion to the podcast, Molly Hart! Molly is a pelvic floor physical therapist who found her pathway in women's health after aiding in her mom's recovery. After seeing the shortcomings and lack of attention provided in the healthcare field, Molly discussed the drive and desire that led to her towards PT. She talks about the plethora of research and scholarships that helped her graduate free of debt, and how that freedom helped open different opportunities as a new grad. While she was able to discover her talent to heal and help many people, Molly also reached a crossroad with herself about how to maintain a work/life balance between giving the best care but also avoiding burnout. Despite the stress and worry, she quit her job and established her own business: Pelvic Balance PT. She wraps up with advice about mindset, overcoming fear, and acting on your intuition, which allowed Molly to live happily with her husband and daughter, and also give the patient care she believes in.

From re-taking pre-requisites, recovering from a car accident, and giving birth to her daughter Alanis, Dawnette enrolled in a hybrid program that helped fit her lifestyle and journey to becoming a PT. She shares the vital role that her support system of family, friends, and husband played to not only help her put in the time for her accelerated program, but also prioritize time with her loved ones. She also created her podcast during school to help initiate the conversation for other mom's that are pre-PT, SPT, and even practicing clinicians. While finding time and balance is not always easy, Dawnette shares the importance of how communicating not only with her spouses, but her daughter as well, helped her realize the importance of prioritizing quality time.

We are kicking off our first Wednesday podcast of the new year with current 2nd year SPT, Daniel Barajas! This episode begins as Daniel shares his non-traditional route to PT school after initially graduating in public health. After learning about the world of PT, he walked us through his process of balancing pre-requisites, GRE studying, and a full-time job. Despite the long and tiresome years leading up to it, Daniel celebrated the long-awaited acceptance into his current PT program. While his first year was difficult and even a little intimidating, Daniel discusses another passion he was able to discover; his involvement in the state PT Association and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion). He worked passionately to not only keep his fellow students involved in important decisions regarding PT school, but also broadens his message for all students about the importance of diversifying school systems and spread awareness of the current lack of DEI in PT professions. Daniel shares his analogy to remember the meaning of DEI as well as his tips and messages about normalizing asking for help when needed and also reaching out to help others when you can. Tune in for an uplifting message about how to strengthen the PT world as a whole.

It's story time on this episode as we are joined by 3rd year SPT, Jessica Ruiz! She shares a riveting experience about adapting to new challenges in both the clinical and mental aspects of learning to develop skills as a PT. As Jessica went into her clinical with a confident headspace and bilingual skills to work with her new Spanish-speaking patient, new symptoms and signs led her to question what was really affecting her patient and whether it was a COVID complication. Throughout the process, she walks us through the mental push & pull that occurs and how she found the strength to believe in her gut feeling and work with the medical team to give the best possible treatment. She reminds all the SPT's out there that, despite feeling a lack of experience, you are all equipped with the right tools to build skills and advocate for your patients. Whether it be insecurity, imposter syndrome, or overall self-questioning, Jessica shares an incredible story of growing and trusting in oneself both personally and professionally. She finishes off with her best piece of advice for SPT's who may experience similar clinical struggles during trying times.

From an early self-discovery of skills related to networking, business, and helping others, he walks us through his PT school experience and journey towards a non-clinical focus. In learning and working towards a license in financial services, while being a full time physical therapist, Will talks about the needed transition in both time management and communication regarding personal finance. Now, as a licensed financial advisor, Will strives to not only grow his skills but also educate other students and business-owning clinicians. On this episode on GRADitude, we are joined by physical therapist, run coach, and founder of Breaking 5 podcast; Kristen Schulz! To start off, Kristen walks us through her adventurous journey. From being a traveling PT right out of PT school to cash-based PT, she describes the changes in mindset that helped shape her vision of the physical therapy she wanted to be involved in. As an experienced runner herself, Kristen shares how she was able to analyze the physical therapy experience from both the runner's perspective as well as the PT's approach. Not only did this allow her to help establish herself as a run coach, but create individualized plans for different runners depending on their progress, goals, and even injuries. While Kristen was able to bridge the gap between a PT recovery and coaching/strengthening, she also figured out ways to coach clinicians specializing in runners. Despite the lack of motivation that many of us experienced during this surreal, COVID-run year, Kristen reminds us of the importance of taking the little steps toward the big goal and remember to "run your life."

In this episode of GRADitude, we share our study hacks for PT School. Some of the study hacks we discuss are using the Pomodoro technique, prioritizing active study (recalling from memory and teaching it to someone) rather than passive study (highlighting and rewriting notes), utilizing mnemonics, and relating emotions to the content you're studying. Stay tuned to the end for a surprise from Sarah.

In this episode of GRADitude, we celebrate our 2 year anniversary and reflect on our daily life was back compared to now and the lessons we learned. We rewind back talking about a week in the life for us back in October 2018 and compare it to now, October 2020. The key takeaway from this episode is to turn our personal failures into successes to you. For us, the biggest the lessons we learned was that your connections will give you opportunities and paths you would have never expected and the importance of hearing other people's stories and relating it to your own personal life experiences.

In this episode of GRADitude, we open up about our personal experiences of bouncing back during clinicals, PT school, and we share key lessons that we learned along the way. We first start by discussing clinical stories of our patient's experiences with bouncing back during their journey to recovery. We then shift to personal anecdotes of bouncing back from PT school tribulations and internal struggles. Key takeaways we emphasize during this episode include: open up, don't isolate yourself, and stop expecting your prior level of function to be the same as your current level of function if there's been a change out of your control. Give yourself some grace, and reflect on your current level of function and plan how you can be the best possible version of yourself. We also want to emphasize that if you're struggling, don't be afraid to reach out to someone. If you need to reach out to us, we would love to hear from you and provide support to help you BOUNCE BACK!

In this episode we chat about our clinical rotations, wildlife, and then a wee bit more wildlife (Steve Irwin would be proud). More importantly we discuss Round 2.0 of our GRADitude Scholarship. Based on our personal experiences, there are just not enough scholarships out there for SPT's! Additionally, the ones that are out there may require extensive hoops to jump through and may have a laundry list of eligibility requirements that you may or may not satisfy to even apply. We digress. To help you all out on your #journeytodebtfree, we are setting the goal to raise $10,000 which will be divided up into at least three scholarships for SPT's (all the money we raise will be put towards the scholarship fund, so if we raise more, those scholarships will be a bit heftier). If you would like to donate directly, we have a Gofundme set up at the below link. This link also has all the details for those who would like to apply for the scholarship.

In this episode we chat with Isabelle, a second-year DPT student. Isabelle majored in Kinesiology during undergrad and took an introduction to PT course during her freshman year. Both of these experiences solidified her interest in PT. Isabelle discusses being waitlisted at multiple programs and getting accepted from her last interview. She shares adjusting from a large undergraduate school to a small graduate program. She talks about how her first semester went and what helped her the most with taking practical exams for the first time. Maintaining a fitness routine, planning everything out, and focusing on her future clinical helped Isabelle remain motivated when her program had to transition to online classes. Isabelle has aspirations of working with the pediatric population in a small town after graduation. She wraps up the episode with advice for DPT students starting classes during a pandemic.

Don't get caught in the mindset of "I will be happy if [insert laundry list of hopes, dreams, and goals]." All to often we fall victim to this thought pattern, never allowing ourselves to be truly happy until we accomplish the next thing... and then the next thing. It comes as no surprise that there will always be a "next thing." So, celebrate the victories no matter how small, give yourself some grace, and TAKE A MOMENT TO APPRECIATE YOUR GROWTH! You all have come so far and you have adapted and overcome so many challenges, especially in recent times. Don't forget to give yourselves some credit.

Alright ladies and gents...it is time to have a heart to heart. Where your darn mask and follow your state and your school's guidelines...do it...just do it. After talking with a lot of you and posting some surveys over the past week, we were absolutely floored to hear some of the stories about the blatant disregard of health official's guidelines and the horrible consequences that have ensued. We stop the spread by holding ourselves accountable. That means wearing your masks, washing your hands, being kind, and following the policies that are put in place to protect us. This is crucial not only to continue being able to actually go to class (for those in schools that have started in-person courses again), but as healthcare workers and future professionals we need to protect our patients, our families, and ourselves so that we can continue to do some good in the world. That is all folks.

In this episode we talk about...THE END OF DIDACTIC! The whole transition for those of us currently in school and for those just starting school has been one heck of a ride. We talk about the ups and downs and what our remaining semesters are going to look like as we embark on our last year of Physical Therapy school. Some of us will be commencing with 40 hour weeks in the clinic while others will be making up labs due to the Covid-19 incomplete classes. Some things are just out of our control and it is best to just take the changes as they come, remain positive, and remain flexible.

There is a difference between social distancing and physical distancing; we need to ensure that we continue to use our support systems, foster our social connections (while physically distanced) and reach out when we need to. This too shall pass.
