Lead Pastor Wes Terry preaches a sermon entitled "Jesus is Impressed by Modest Faith" out of Matthew 8:5-13. This sermon is part of the series entitled "What Man is This?" and was preached on August 9th, 2026.
What happens when someone society has written off dares to approach Jesus? In Matthew 8, we encounter a man with leprosy who had lost everything, his family, his community, his standing before God, and yet he pressed through every barrier to kneel before Jesus with one piercing question: not can you heal me, but will you? That distinction cuts to the heart of something many of us wrestle with quietly. We may believe in God's power in a general sense while secretly doubting whether that power extends to us personally, to our specific failures, our particular shame, our unique brand of brokenness. What we find in this passage is that Jesus does not recoil. He does not step back. He reaches out and touches the untouchable before he even speaks a word. The touch comes before the declaration. That sequence is not accidental. It tells us something profound about the character of Jesus and what he wants for every person who feels like they are on the outside looking in. This is a message about more than miraculous healing. It is about the deep human longing to be cleansed, reconciled, and welcomed back into belonging. And it invites us to ask honestly whether the communities we build around faith reflect that same willingness to wait when everyone else walks away.
