How many of you have questioned the figures spouted by politicians about the economic impact of an event and even the creation of a sporting venue will generate? Is there a formula to predict such figures?
Our guest on this show is a man who has worked in sports for over 47 years and has lectured on many aspects of sport at the US Sports University – formerly the United States Sports Academy – including the area of Sports Finance. T.J. Rosandich looks at this aspect of sport and how in fact many major events end up costing money rather than making money. We are sure that you will find what he has to say extremely interesting.
John has us turn our attention to the recent FIFA World Cup that has just concluded, and Ashley looks briefly at the change in goalkeeper techniques and teh number if Africans gracing the tournament playing for other nations. John then raises the issue of the conspiracy theories that ran throughout the tournament and the “hatred of the VAR.”
After our conversation with TJ, John and Ashley discuss some of the issues raised and how Western Australian Tourism figures leaked were claiming that for every dollar spent on bringing events, including sporting events to the state, these events would return $2.80. Hopefully after listening to this interview someone asks the Government to show how they came to that figure.

This podcast comes quickly after the last so that we can share with you Part Two of our interview with the remarkable Ron Anderson.
As menioned previously Ron Anderson lost his sight in his early 30’s, but he did not let that hold him back. He has thrown his heart and soul into establishing many sports programs over the years. IN Part Two of this interview 85 year old Ron took the time to look back on his involvement with cycling and also golf for the blind.
John takes a look at the Enhanced Games and how they were received and the lack of records. The payments would no doubt have made it worthwhile. The one thing the Games showed was how much money there is in sport for the athletes to be paid what they were paid, so why are the IOC so averse to paying Olympians?
In our topics under conversation Ashley looks at the IOC President saying that the Olympic Games will be cutting back on sports when the Olympics come to Brisbane in 2032. This is something that we feel had to come to make hosting easier for prospective Olympic host cities. Which sports will be culled when Brisbane comes around? How importnat are historical links to the Olympic Games going to be in this process?

We have interviewed some amazing people over the past 20 years on Not The Footy Show and in this episode we catch up with yet another remarkable individual.
Ron Anderson lost his sight in his early 30’s, and as a result he lost a great deal more as well. Working at the Braille Society as a recreation officer proved to be his calling as he threw his heart and soul into the role establishing many sports programs over the years. Now aged 85 Ron took the time to look back on some of his achievements with Ashley. In this first part of a two-part interview Ron talks about his adjusting to his blindness and his running in the Sydney City to Surf (Part Two of this interview will be in our next podcast).
In our topics under conversation Ashley looks at why sports are playing under 17 or under 18 World Cups. There is a huge cost to the participating nations in not only sending teams to these tournaments but also in developing the players. If you are going to invest in such a program surely you would want to see a large number of the players progress to play at full international level, but the statistics show that very few of this cohort actually make it to that level. So why are International Federations and National Associations signing up for such events?
John looks at a famous quote from German philosopher Karl Marx and asks if today he would say that Sport rather than religion is the opium of the people. They way it is discussed, the way politicians have attached themselves to sport to try and form a link with their constituents. It is not just the betting companies who have hijacked sport, everyone is trying to get the attention of sports fans.

We are back again with another slightly longer than usual show. Thank you to all those who contacted us saying how much they enjoyed our last show and the interview with Pierre-Emmanuel Luneau-Daurignac all of you sharing his concern that we are putting too much pressure on young children both physically and mentally.
On this show we catch up a long term friend of Not The Footy Show, David Mitchell who is an expert in leadership. He was recently looking at the changes at the top in F1 – a sport he knows well having been involved for a number of years, – and wondered if he could give us an insight into the key components to good leadership within sport. How many times does a change in Leadership slow down the sport achieving the goals it set out to achieve, and result in a culture shift. Does Long term sustainable success only come when the leader is given time?
David also talks about F1 and teh impact that this change of leadership has had in this space. If you are after more information from David visit his website at the Brand Rover.
John’s topic of interest is the news that in the AFL one of their Insurance companies is no longer going to cover players who suffer concussion. What are the potential ramifications of this decision. Will all players at all levels soon have to sign a waiver stating that they understand teh risks involve din playing that sport.
With the announcement by CONMEBOL that as a Confederation they plan to endores FIFA President Gianni Infantino for another term at the top of the sport Ashley asks does this show how the Confederations are out of touch with the people, Do the various sports still require the Confederations as a level of management of the sport, are they still relevant? Is it time to stop the gravy train, and would many sports be better off taking away this level of management? Is it time to go back to sport being governed from the bottom up rather than the top down?

This show is longer than normal, but it is one that every parent and administrator should listen to, as our special guest looks at the physical abuse that children suffer as sports look to unearth the next generation of Champions.
On this show we catch up with Pierre-Emmanuel Luneau-Daurignac who after working as an investigative journalist and as editor-in-chief of a French-American press agency, he became an independent filmmaker in 2015. He has recently made a documentary that is garnering a great deal of attention Worldwide called “BROKEN KIDS, The Untold Story of Young Athletes.”
As a result of the film he has now set up an NGO to try and protect children from coaches, their parents and sports that push their bodies physically and mentally and cause them long term damage. Children’s Rights International Sports Observatory is now finding that many individuals who have witnessed or suffered such damage around the world are contacting CRISO to share their stories and offer their assistance. If you are keen to assist in protecting Children’s rights or from behaviours that hurt them, they would love to hear from you via their website (criso.org )
If you can make sure you watch the documentary and visit their website as for Children the focus should be fun and enjoyment when playing sport. We should be protecting their rights. The systems should not be breaking them physically and mentally.
In our topics under discussion, Ashley looks at the decline in quality from sporting Media managers. While acknowledging that the role has changed, surely they are beholden to understand the rules of the competitions that their teams are competing in? Many are getting these wrong, so should International or National Federations and Associations be pulling them up? Is this decline due to these organisations looking for cheap options, and not being prepared to pay for experienced staff?
John then picks at the scab that was the Ashes series in Australia. Who is to blame for England’s poor showing? Was the preparation as adequate as some have tried to claim? Ashley does not hold back labelling it England’s most embarrassing tour to Australia in his lifetime.

As we roll into our 21st year of the show we would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and welcome you to our first show of 2026.
On this first show for 2026 we catch up with Bonita Mersiades who after years working in sports administration moved into the world of publishing. Bonita, set up FairPlay Publishing so that sportspeople and authors are able to share their stories and the history of Australian sport is being preserved. Check out the books on offer on their website and on the SHOP PAGE
Rather than having specifc topics in sport in recent times Ashley and John look back on the past month of sport since the last show. Under discussion are The Hockey India League where Ashley was commentating in January. Then it moves onto the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico and whether the threat of a boycott is actually followed through by any nation. Even if it isn’t how many fans can afford the price of the tickets for games and will we see FIFA having to bus crowds in to fill the stadia in the USA?
John then picks at the scab that was the Ashes series in Australia. Who is to blame for England’s poor showing? Was the preparation as adequate as some have tried to claim? Ashley does not hold back labelling it England’s most embarrassing tour to Australia in his lifetime.
To round out the show John questions the options today of viewing sport such as the T20 World Cup and explains why he will not be watching, also the timing of Australia’s Pro League matches is questioned, while Ashley asks for the League to be brought to a prompt end for everyone’s sake.

Welcome our 20 year celebration edition.
John and Ashley and some of our former co-hosts from yesteryear look back on the past 20 years of Not The Footy Show both on air and as a podcast.
Both pick five of their favourite interviews from the past 20 years and share some ofg the stories behind them that you the listeners would not be aware of.
Ashley’s top five were: Angela Madsen (Full Interview) Sir Roger Bannister the first man to run a sub-four minute mile, (Full Interview) Sam Goodwin, who educated us about the marketing of sport and the mistakes made by many sports in this area. (Podcast 65 ) Lord Coe Olympic champion, politician and now sports administrator, and his final was his childhood hero the great England goalkeeper Gordon Banks who talks about THAT save.
Unfortunately many of John’s top five have been lost when the radio station closed, but they were: Former England cricketer and administrator Sir Alec Bedser who had fond memories of Perth, Dick Johnson the five-time Australian Touring Car Champion and a three-time winner of the Bathurst 1000, Andrew Liddawi who has done so much for adaptive mountain biking, (Listen Here Podcast 71), Kevin Alderton who lost his sight when in the army and then skiied downhill at over 100mph to claim a world record, and finally the man who pursued FIFA for many years to uncover the truth behind the corruption, Andrew Jennings. Unfortunately this is one of the intreviews that we have lost.
There is also a quick look back at some of the changes in sport in the past 20 years.
We must thank all who have helped us bring Not The Footy Show to you over the years, Darren Harper, Kodie Paris, Michael Fontein, the late Clint Ford, Anna Flanagan, Olivia Vivian, Simon Orchard, Dan Israel, Alan Dunlop, Paul Thompson and Mitch “Honeymonster” Woodcock.

Welcome to another podcast, can you believe we missed our own 20th Birthday?
Thank you to those of you who were there at the start and are still tuning in.
As usual we have another great guest lined up for you. On this show we catch up with Lekeisha Pergolitti who returned from the World Boxing Championships in the UK with a silver medal. One of three medals the Australian women won. Lekeisha shares with us her journey in the sport and what she hopes for in the future.
In our topics under discussion Ashley asks how damaging it is for a sport or a competition to have its athletes and umpires going on social media asking for sponsorship. Does this actually undermine the sport or competition’s attempts to attract sponsors?
John turns his attention to the umpires and referees, and asks whether sport is heading down a path in which all decisions will ultimately be made by video rather than the eyes of an official? He also raises and intersting point in relation to the identity of officials in televised matches. What will the future look like in this area in many sports?
As mentioned our 20th birthday was last month. Let us know who you would like us to try and talk to in our 20th year and if you would like us to keep going for another ten years.

Welcome to another podcast – our 562nd show – in this our 20th year!
As usual we are always looking for a different aspect of sport and in this show we believe we are talking about something that has been ignored for a very long time. Faye Sheridan from Healthy Her joins us to explain how with education athletes and coaches can understand a woman’s menstrual cycle so much better in order to minimise the impact on their performance. As women’s sport becomes more professional are these athletes being given the best advice when it comes to playing on through their menstrual cycle? Is the awareness there amongst the coaching staff within many of the elite set ups? If the coaches are not being educated on this are the players themselves being given acces to information that could have a huge impact not only in their sporting lives,
In our topics under discussion Ashley looks at how once again we have witnessed a goalkeeper taking a water bottle onto the pitch with notes on the opposition’s penalty-takers on it. The opposing goalkeeper has allegedly thrown the water bottle away. Once again the media have jumped upon the story. Is it in the spirit of the game to throw the bottle away? Or is it in the right spirit to take such notes out onto the pitch? Is it time that the aurthorities stop this and make players go back to having to memorise such information?
John touches on the NBA protest about pay. He looks at how long a period of time it has taken for English footballers to be paid the astronomical wages they are paid today, arguing that it takes time to establish sports, and sporting teams and competitions. Very few start off being paid vast sums of money in their first few years. Today is it about how well they play or how many followers they have and how much attention they can attract whic translates into revenue?
As mentioned this year we celebrate 20 years. Let us know who you would like us to try and talk to in our 20th year and if you would like us to keep going for another ten years.

Welcome to another podcast in this our 20th year!
As usual we are always looking for guests with a story to tell, and our special guest on this edition certainly has one. In this slightly longer than normal show we catch up with Tony Merrick who is a movement coach. What is a movement coach we hear you ask? Tony is a former rugby league player and a strength and conditioning coach who joins us to talk about his journey and how he has ended being a specialist trainer and coach who now looks at how the body works and the areas that individuals need to look at working on to live a healthier life. (Total Movement)
In our topics under discussion Ashley looks at how South Africa claimed the World Test Championship and broke the cartel at the top of cricket by beating Australia, meaning only one of those top three teams of India, Australia and England have claimed the title in three years. Not surprisingly there are now rumours that they want to change the format. It would appear that the current format does need a tweak but should it really be split in half? How long can this event last if these top three continue to find they are not playing in the final or winning the Championship?
In our topics under discussion Ashley looks at the decision of relocating a brand as it is announced that the North Sydney Bears brand will become the Perth Bears on the other side of the country. John believes this is a wise move, and there is a great opportunity for success. Will the existing brand assure success comes quicker to the club? What will be the impact on Perth Glory and the Western Force? Will the marketing be there to carry the carry the team forward?
John touches on the topic that no sport wants to address which is concussion in sport and the very sad outcomes we are witnessing. He asks when will sport genuinely address this issue. Incidentally the book Ashley refers to is “A Delicate Game” by Hana Walker-Brown, this is a very informative read on this subject. This book covered many aspects that lead to concussion and the affects that result. John asks whether the statistic that suicide is most common amongst ex professional cricketers is still the case? Would these contact sports now have eclipsed Cricket?
As mentioned this year we celebrate 20 years. Let us know who you would like us to try and talk to in our 20th year and if you would like us to keep going for another ten years.

Thank you to everyone who tuned into the last show which was one of our most listened to Podcasts, and hopefully has changed the way you approach life or even coaching.
If you enjoyed that podcast we are confident that you will really enjoy listening to our special guest on this show, Brian Miller who has attended 11 Olympic Games but was in Paris in a different role than usual. Under discussion is the value of an Olympic medal and whether team sport get a bad wrap as they are only worth one medal. Brian in his role as a board member of Athletics Australia also discusses Australia’s second best ever performance in Track and Field in Paris.
In our topics under discussion, John asks if the Olympics are forgotten now that they have gone, and is the Paralympic Games suffering by following the event? Should the two be working closer together to maximise the exposure for our athletes? John also questions the ‘defection’ of Australian Olympic medallist Matt Richardson after Paris to compete for Great Britain, the land of his birth.
Ashley carries on from a point made by Brian that all sports need to be aware of the lure of the mighty dollar as other sports look to poach talented athletes and then up-skill them to suit that particular sport. This being currently very prevalent in Women’s sports. How many talented sports people switch from their first love and end up excelling in another sport?
Another question that is thrown up is should juniors be training at 5.30 in the morning?
Ashley would like to apologise that he said Phil Neale played for Bradford City, when he played for Lincoln City!

First of all apologies for the time between podcasts but a family bereavement too priority. So this show is slightly longer than normal. We are sure that you will find that it was well worth the wait as we have a fantastic guest lined up who is asking you to Unthink, and chaneg teh way you do things in life, but that could easily be transferred to sport.
That special guest is Great Britain Olympian and Hockey medallist Sarah Thomas. Sarah has transitioned into the business world and along with German hockey international Janne Muller Weiland and Ross McClelland has set up a compnay called Unthink a company that has been Shortlisted for Start-Up Entrepreneur of the Year 2024 in Great Britain.
The company was born out of the Covid pandemic and is now making great inroads into the business world and is trying to change the traditional learning processes, hence the name. In our conversation we look at how having been involved in sport at the highest level and in a team environment this could well be introduced in a high performance environment. The whole idea of changing the way things are done in business is proving refreshing. Trust and respcect for those you work with have come to the fore, and the fact that you do not have to like them. It is a really refreshing approach, and after listening we are sure that you are going to want to go on the dirt tracks rather than the highway.
https://www.weunthink.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/love-sundays-again-resampled-2.mp4In the topics under discussion John and Ashley look back at the Olympics and being of an older generation both felt like many that this year’s event was lacking something. Was it simply that there are too many events and it is almost impossible to stay across them all? Was it the actual coverage we as viewers were shown? Ashley touches on the success of African athletes, and how many are not representing African nations. Breakdancing also is discussed and how many in the sport did not want it to be a part of the Olympic Games, and Rachel Gunn’s academic paper is well worth aread on this topic. Also a white ball on a blue pitch in sulight was never a good idea.
John then looks at the commercial that was running in Australia to convince the public that they need to stand up to the Government in relation to anti-siphoning regulations. Is this really a push for the people of Australia or one purely for the TV Stations to make more money.

In this show our special guest is author Lucas Gillard who talks about his latest book “George Best Down Under.” The book looks at the four main trips that the great Northern Ireland and Manchester United player made to Australia and how each was so very different in terms of where he was in his life and his career, and also how he was received. Copies can be purchased online here .
In the topics under discussion Ashley looks at the way talent is being identified today via trials rather than coaches actually scouting talent. To make matters worse in some sports the administrators are charging players who wish to attend trials for state representative teams, and then when selected they are again expected to pay to represent their state. Is this right? If a State cannot afford to heavily subsidise such teams surely they should not attempt to field a side in that age group? Equally worrying is hearing that three sports board members have delayed the announcement of a State team being announced because their child has not been selected. Does this who area need to be looked at and a better model put in place?
After cracking one of his best quips John turns his attention to Olympic selection and how only two are chosen when multiple athletes have achieved a qualifying time. Once again the Court of Arbitration for Sport is once again going to be busy, but should they be? Do the athletes need to understand the rules or is it the sport that needs to make the process clearer. Or are such events about having the best in the world competing or is it more important to have representatives from around the world competing even though they are not the top competitors in their sport? Does it really matter where an athlete comes from, surely they can inspire people in other nations apart from their own?
Moving on from Sandy’s interview we look at coaches and are they there for the players or themselves? Also is the current funding model the best way to decide which sports receive funding? Or is it in fact contributing to the problem? Is this the price of professional sport and has making it a full time job taken the joy out of the game for those playing. In addition how much has coaching killed the freedom afforded the players?

Mental health has become a big issue in sport in recent years. Yet are many of the issues being branded as a mental health problem are to many not really deserving of being labelled as such.
We have been trying to find a sports psychologist willing to discuss this issue. Many declined the opportunity, but we are very pleased to say that esteemed sports Psychologist Sandy Gordon from Performance Perspectives International.
Sandy explains the difference between mental health and mental illness and warns of the perils of labelling some of the issues facing athletes today as Mental Health issues. He discusses the dangers of building a young athlete’s identity around their chosen sport and reveals that this has been identified and hence athlete’s are encouraged to also continue studying or another aspect of their lives being developed. How much is the focus on winning contributing to these mental health issues, and indirectly are our Governments to blame for creating a set up where funding is based on winning? Hopefully our discussion will lead to further discussions within sport that make it a better environment for all. (Here is a link to one of the books recommended – Good Sport)
Ashley turns his attention to the news that World Athletics is going to give financial rewards to its Olympic gold medallists in Paris. The announcement angered many other sporting federations but will it result in a change? The IOC reportedly made $7.6Bn in revenue between 2017 and 2021. They redistribute 90% of their income to National Olympic Committees and International Federations, World Athletics has opted to return that revenue to the athletes that have generated it, will others follow suit?
Moving on from Sandy’s interview we look at coaches and are they there for the players or themselves? Also is the current funding model the best way to decide which sports receive funding? Or is it in fact contributing to the problem? Is this the price of professional sport and has making it a full time job taken the joy out of the game for those playing. The celebrations are over as we move onto show number 551, and as usual plenty to discuss with another special guest on a slightly longer than normal show.
Perth Glory has a new owner after over 20 years under Tony Sage. Only the diehard fans have stuck with the team through what have been some turbulent times. We catch up with Brand Consultant David Mitchell (dna-rB) to look at what the new owner Ross Pelligra is going to have to do to win the fans back and lift the club back to former levels of success. David also talks about F1, an area he knows well and looks at the damage currently being done to the Red Bull brand.
In the topics under discussion Ashley looks at Optus stadium which was Government funded and asks why is the Government putting it’s hand in its pocked to to subsidise so many events at the stadium? Surely those running the venue should be out there selling the benefits of performing at this venue rather than having to lean on Government funding when it comes to hosting events. He also questions the prudence of hosting AC Milan and AS Roma straight after the Serie A Season ends; and is a little disparaging to both teams. Will the stadium be full for this game?
John opts for a range of topics rather than just one. First up he turns his attention to the NRL who took a league game to Las Vegas. Do they have the best chance of any football code of cracking the American market? Next up is the “Pool of Death,” and once again Australia finds itself being in this dreaded group. If it is the best of the best competing surely every group is a “Pool of Death?” John then looks at how Fair Game UK – guests on Podcast #125 – has now had a small victory with the new Football Governance Bill in the UK. He then moves onto whether the Olympic Games will in fact be hosted by Brisbane in 2032.

Welcome to our 550th show!!
We look back on why the show was created and celebrate a woman who has led the way in terms of coaching women’s football, Nicola Williams. Nicola was the first coach of the Perth Glory women’s team and has since coached in Italy, Trinidad and Tobago, Papua New Guniea and the United Kingdom. Showing that there is a career for women in coaching.
In the topics under discussion Ashley focuses on the Governance of sport, one of his pet issues. He looks at the A Leagues Management and asks whether their board were really keeping an eye on expenditure as they should have? Is it time that the members of the A-League clubs asked for more transparency? He also looks at Hockey Australia and asks how despite a proposed move for the administration from Melbourne to Perth when the 135million development for Hockey’s high performance centre is completed why staff are still being employed in Melbourne. Also why following the report into the Australian National Women’s High Performance three years on key recommendations have not been put in place. Are these Board members truly overseeing the running of these sports and acting in their best interests.
Meanwhile John turns his attention to the NFL and asks why the MVP award always seems to go the quarterback? He also questions whether they really are the best player, as often they can only perform when those around them are on top of their game. He then poses the question is sport the last place in society where there is a meritocracy?

Happy New Year! . Welcome to our 549th show in our 19th year thank you to all those who have stuck with us on this journey.
If you care about football this is one interview you do not want to miss!
To start 2024 we are catching up with Niall Coupar the CEO of Fair Game in the United Kingdom who are looking to try and get football back on track. With an astounding statistic that 64 of the 92 clubs in the top four divisions have gone into administration since the Premier League was created shows that the state of the game is not in a good place. Fair Games has attracted experts in various sectors who have not only identified the problems within the game, but also unlike many who have done that have also come up with some solutions to make clubs once again sustainable. One of the key factors is the removal of rogue owners who are stripping clubs and alienating the communities that they represent. With 34 clubs committed to what Fair Game is trying to do there is a strength in numbers and as an independent body there is a real chance that change may well happen, change that could save many of the tradition community clubs. Trust us every football fan should listen to what Fair Game are doing or check out their website. (Fair Game UK) Does Australia need a similar body to help the game?
As this is the first show of 2024 there are plenty of topics to discuss. John bemoans the fact that sponsors logos have taken centre stage when it comes to cricket, while Ashley raises again the naming rights of national teams and who makes this decision and how the public feel about these companies being attached to our national teams. He also questions the hyperbole surrounding Nathan Lyon’s 500th Test wicket and David Warner’s retirement and the current commentators recency bias. Ashley asks how Football Australia’s new Socceroos brand advert shows a lack of understanding as to how DNA works.
After the interview with Niall there is a discussion as to how football has found itself in such a position. Is this why the possibility of a Super League for Europe’s big clubs stays alive? John questions whether these big clubs need their traditional fan base any more, or are they looking at the fans and money available outside the countries that they currently compete in.

A slightly longer show than normal as plenty to discuss with two World Cups coming to an end.
Imagine training hard for an Olympic, Paralympic, or Commonwealth Games and just being pipped for a medal, that must be soul destroying. Imagine then hearing that one of those who beat you have had their medal taken off them following a failed test for illegal substance. Now you have a medal, but you have missed the chance to take your place on the podium. So how do you receive your medal? Our guest on this show is para-lifter Ben Wright and he explains what will now happen. He also discusses how he is travelling in terms of qualification for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, which he felt had a hiccup in Woollongong, but in truth saw him still perform well.
John turns his attention to the recently finished Cricket and Rugby World Cups, and asks what have we learned from both? Does Rugby need to look at its rule book again, and also the role of the video referee? Certainly there needs to be a review of the way decisions have been made. As for the Cricket World Cup, some may ask why it took so long to reach its conclusion, and one that saw no real surprises come the semi-finals. How much of a part did the pitches play? How important was it to win the toss? With first nations investing millions into their programs is there ever going to be an opportunity for any other nation to crash the party?
Ashley then looks at a comment made to him by a sports administrator who was relieved that their side did not make the finals series as it would save them expenditure. He asks if teams cannot afford to travel across the country for finals should the sport revert to a league table format? Or should the fans and the players be asking why knowing the cost the administrators have not generated the revenue to cover the cost of competing in the finals? Surely success has the potential to pull in more money?
Also under discussion is the financial fair play cases going on in the United Kingdom and how far the penalties will go.

How many of us have dreamt of represnting our nation at any sport, to have that moment where we can say we represented our country?
On this show we catch up with one of our youngest guests ever. Molly Baker took up the sport of Curling less than a year ago and already at the age of 14 she is representing Australia in December in Finland. What makes her story all the more remarkable is she lives in Perth, Western Australia, a city with one of the highest amounts of daily sunlight in the world. So how did this all come about? We are very grateful to Molly for sharing her story with us, and wish her all the best for the future.
Ashley has just returned from commentating at the Asian Games and his topic for this show is something that he noticed at the Games, an increase in the number of VIPs stepping forward to present athletes with medals at such events, and it would also appear that some are looking to steal the limelight from the real heroes, the athletes. As mentioned previously fans do not pay to see these individuals, they come to celebrate the sporting stars. Is it therefore time that we saw some leadership and these ceremonies were trimmed back to being short, slick affairs, as they were in years gone by. Time to trim the dignitaries?
John turns his attention to the Cricket World Cup and asks whether this event has highlighted that the centralised contract has had its day. Gone are the days that players are being picked on form, as the top players have become part of a very exclusive club that is just as hard to get out of as it is to get in. How much has this centralised system damaged attendances at Sheffield Shield or County Cricket? There is already too much international cricket, and now with T20 being included in the Olympic program there is going to be even more. Rather than trying to stretch the squad of centrally contracted players surely the sport has to go back to selecting those players who are in form?

On this show we have two special guests.
Claire Ghabrial returned to boxing after a ten year gap, and according to her coach came back better than ever but as she turned 40 was forced to retire. Kaye Scott came to boxing later in life and won the silver medal in the 2022 World Championship in Delhi, but will not be able to compete at the next Championships because she will have turned 40. Is it right to put an age limit on amateur boxing? This is a strange move when the individuals in question can opt to turn professional, take off their headgear, box more rounds and age is not a factor.
Kaye is on the board of the IBA and has set up a petition to try and overturn this decision. If you feel that it is unfair or makes little sense then sign the petition here. or on her Instagram or Facebook pages.
In our topics under discussion Ashley asks why we are seeing sports hold trials to pick representative teams, rather than having those appointed to coach these teams going out and scouting the players that they want in their side? While there is a place for those players who may not have been spotted to have an opportunity, surely this should be a back up for the coach rather than being the norm?
John turns his attention to the language being used in sport. Sport is throwing up a whole new vocabulary, is this because we employ so many ex-athletes moving into media roles. Then he rants about how Anzac day has become “Anzac week” as sports try to commercialise a day of remembrance.

On this show we take a slightly different path with our special guest Lisa Wilson who is heading to Australia as an Ambassador for the Transplant Games. A sports festival for those who have undergone a transplant thanks to organ donation. Lisa lost her son in a freak hockey training accident but his memory lives on through the 50 people his organs his people have helped since his passing. Lisa has been fortunate to meet two of those who have participated in the Transplant Games. This is an interview not to be missed and will hopefully encourage many to commit to being organ donors.
Lisa Wilson with two recipients of organs from her son Tom, Fatima and Gordon. In our topics under discussion Ashley asks should the International Olympic Committee, which is supposed to be apolitical, be the ones to determine who and who from Russia and Belarus can compete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games? Should this decision not fall to the International Sporting Federations and their member nations?
John stays with the topic of the Olympic Games and the Australian need for a $2billion injection of funds to assure gold medals in the “green and gold decade” leading up to the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games. Matt Carroll of the Australian Olympic Committee was reported as telling the Press Club that this is what is needed if Australian athletes are to medal in 2032. Which sports will receive this funding? How many already have government funding? Why should they get more and why are they so reliant on Government hand-outs?

Time to head to the beach!
Following our last show where we were discussing surfing inland on this show we head to the beach to talk about Beach Hockey with the President of the World Beach Hockey Federation and Director of Beach Hockey Australia, Greg Mill who has been developing the game in Australia. Expect to see it soon at a beach near you! Not only that but Australia is looking to host the Beach Hockey World Cup in 2024. Click on the link below for the Queensland Hockey advert.

In our topics under discussion, John turns his attention to the Superbowl and the final play of the match that secured a victory for the Kansas City Chiefs, and asks was it in the spirit of the game and did it in fact lead to an anticlimactic finish? With sport now being touted as entertainment first and a sporting contest second, was this entertainment?
Ashley returns after watching the indoor hockey world Cup in South Africa, his beloved Swindon Town and also having the Premiere of his new documentary “Return To Your Corner, which was held in New York and hosted by the World Boxing Council. Highlights of the event below.
In his topic Ashley looks at the Shape of The Game coming from World Rugby. One thing he found on his travels was the average fan was becoming sick of the delays caused by using technology and interrupting the flow of the game. How important is it that these decisions are made quickly and how important is it to keep those inside the stadium informed. Another aspect that World Rugby is looking at simplifying the laws and removing subjectivity, which is something to be applauded and other sports also need to look at this. Also a seperate approach to the advance the women’s game. This is refreshing as in many cases just because it works with the men’s game it does not mean it is best for the women’s game.
Is sport killing itself? The fact that in so many sports the style of play is identical no matter which team you watch, is turning fans away. So do clubs, coaches and the sports themselves need to take a new approach?

We’re back for our 19th year and our 539th show. Happy New Year!
This show is slightly longer than our normal length but we hope that you will feel it is worth it, as we have a very interesting guest and also read and discuss a letter that we received during the break,
Our guest on this show is a man who had dedicated the past ten years to following a dream, to create a surf park to allow surfers to be able to surf even when the ocean is like a millpond. Andrew Ross is the chairman and chief development officer for Aventuur ( Aventuur.com) who are creating the largest surf park in the Southern Hemisphere here in Perth; which is due to start construction this year. What will the purists make of this? How are they addressing the environmental issues? Andrew shares his journey and the research carried out that to reach this point, and what the surf park will offer when it opens.
As mentioned we received a letter from a “concerned Hockey follower,” Ian Gillan in the UK, who wanted us to share his views on where the sport is at. He makes some very valid points, but how can the other fans ensure that such concerns are addressed?
The Hockey World Cup in India has just come to a close and the host nation India bowed out before the quarter finals. Some in India vented their frustration at the media, claiming that had they done their job asking questions that they felt needed to be asked prior to the tournament. Ashley looks at whether many in the media are prepared ask the hard questions. How many are influenced by threats to accreditation, access to athletes or tournaments? Are the media today in many cases simply a marketing tool for the sports and teams that they cover?
Rather than focus on one topic John opts to look at a few of the talking points that have come up while we have been off air over Christmas and the New Year. One thing that has got under his skin is the naming rights of our national football team, and he asks does the team now represent the nation, or the company whose name they wear? Test cricket also comes under the microscope and how T20 has changed the whole dynamic of the game where bat now dominates ball. Even the ‘pub team’ in the A-League comes under analysis.

Live sport is all about entertainment, so why do paying fans have to endure speeches that kill rather than help build the atmosphere leading to a big game?
In this show we look at this as well as the issue of Welcome to Country in Australia and whether the current methods are helping convey the message that is trying to be shared. Is there a better way that is more inclusive and educational? We catch up Emma Gibbens and Rhys Paddick from “Acknowledge This” specialists in cultural education and change.
In our last show for 2022 and following the request from Football for more Government funding, Ashley asks whether an audit should be carried out before any more money is given to teh sport to find out where the millions of dollars given have been spent. He also asks whether a review should be undertaken into the way the sport is run around the country and the duplication of staff around the country is necessary and money well spent.
John, opts to take a swipe at the world’s best footballers in the wake of the controversial Qatar World Cup coming to an end. Was there more posturing that actually doing. Hear his view, but bear in mind that some players may well have taken action but away from the public eye.
We will be back at the end of January with out next show in our 18th year of operation. We hope that you will join us again. In the meantime we wish those how celebrate it a Merry Christmas and everyone a healthy and prosperous New Year.
