We’re here to help you be a better informed partner in education. On this show we discuss dyslexia and other related disorders, research, interventions, special education policy, and we will also be interviewing experts in the field.
Today’s we’ll be speaking with Dr. Robin Edge, PhD, CCC-SLP
Dr. Robin Edge is a Licensed and Certified Speech-Language Pathologist and Tenured Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Jacksonville University where she teaches fluency disorders, healthcare ethics, counseling, professional issues, and international rehabilitation policy/cultural competence. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia with a specialization in fluency disorders and treatment outcomes. She specializes in business practice and management, consulting with companies to open therapeutic and educational centers using skills she acquired owning a speech and occupational therapy private practice for many years. Dr. Edge has many national and international publications and presentations and is a strong advocate for patients with communication disorders and their families. She currently serves as the Florida Speech-Language Pathology Representative to the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association's Committee of Ambassador's, a group that advocates with federal legislators to increase funding and access to services for people with speech, language, literacy, and hearing needs. She also serves as the Florida Speech-Language Hearing Association's Vice President of Speech-Language Pathology and conducts continuing education courses for speech-language pathologists nationwide.

Clarice Jackson is the founder of Voice Advocacy Center in Omaha NE where she serves as the Executive Director of the Literacy and Dyslexia Screening and Teaching Program. She also serves as a Councilwoman for The Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy County. She is a sought-after national presenter on the topics of dyslexia, black literacy matters and special education advocacy. She wrote a national resolution on dyslexia as the NAACP Ed Chair in 2014 and uses her platform to change the narrative surrounding literacy. –

Terrie serves as the Vice-President of Educator Initiatives for Learning Ally where she works to develop engagement programs, professional learning services and communities for educators. Her passion is working with educators to create dynamic classrooms and recognizing educators in their tremendous efforts. She has more than 25 years of experience as both a motivational leader and developer of content for educators and administrators. Terrie’s focus for the past six years has been on the pedagogical practices needed to create effective environments for struggling readers and students with dyslexia. She has the opportunity to lead and facilitate groups numbering in the thousands helping to build better understanding of working with struggling readers and students with dyslexia.
Terrie is certified as an Academic Language Practitioner and is currently working towards a Ph.D. in Literacy, with an emphasis in Educational Leadership from St. John’s University.

A discussion with award-winning educator and Author Hilderbrand Pelzer III and Asher Yearout, Host of Empower Dyslexia Student Edition.
It is all about how to support students with learning challenges. What can we do to cut off the pipeline to prison.
Hilderbrand Pelzer III is an award-winning educator with three decades of wide-ranging experience in the urban educational field. Having served in wide-ranging capacity as an assistant regional superintendent, a high school principal, an elementary school principal, an assistant principal, and a teacher, Pelzer is highly familiar with the interconnected pathway of educational problems and solutions from the classroom to the district level.
As the author of Unlocking Potential: Organizing a School Inside a Prison, Pelzer has earned a national reputation for his achievements in expanding opportunities in highly challenging schools and educational environments. His enthusiasm for student achievement represents a career-long commitment that began as a first-year teacher at the Bensalem Youth Development Center, a state facility serving incarcerated male juveniles. Since then, his career has been distinguished by the intersection of education and incarceration. His passion for education and disadvantaged youth has equipped him to meet the needs of the most underserved students, demonstrated in his achievement of the Moral and Courageous Exemplar Urban Educational Leadership Award.
Pelzer is also a writer, contributor, and speaker. He highlights issues in urban education, ranging from the challenges faced by schools to their solutions. Among his many notable accomplishments is the creation of an evidence-based school model for serious and high-risk youth offenders in Philadelphia’s correctional facilities. He is a TEDx speaker, and his captivating TEDx talk “What Incarcerated Youth Can Teach Teachers” addressed students’ reading difficulties and what incarcerated youth can do to bring the severity of their inadequate reading instruction to the attention of aspiring teachers before their first lesson. Pelzer’s perspective on education is defined by incarcerated youths’ experience with school failure and the belief that their insights can strengthen educators understanding of where to raise the bar in teaching.

Nancy Disterlic graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Development and Dallas Baptist University with a Master of Arts in Teaching (Multisensory Instruction).
She taught in Keller ISD for 12 years in both elementary and high school, as a classroom teacher, dyslexia therapist and special education teacher for students with autism. She is a Certified Academic Language Therapist, Licensed Dyslexia Therapist, and a member of the Academic Language Therapy Association. She is currently serving as the Region 10 Dyslexia Consultant, serving districts and students to develop the skills to become independent and confident. She offers a new perspective for teachers working with students with dyslexia.

My name is George Miller;** I am a Child Advocacy Artist. I have devoted the past 20 years of my life to creating artwork that advocates for the education and well-being of children. All my artwork is hand drawn and hand painted. I am a self-taught artist.
I have been commissioned to create works of art by numerous child advocacy organizations across the country. The Child Welfare League of America, The National Youth at Risk Association, The American Association of School Social Workers, The Federation of Families, The Utah Comprehensive Counseling Association, The Florida Coalition for Children and the Florida Network of Child Advocacy Centers to name a few. Almost every piece of artwork on this website has been commissioned by an agency or organization working in support of children.
I love to create artwork that is meaningful and helpful. My artwork addresses issues such as literacy, dropout prevention, child abuse prevention, mental health and autism. I wish to inspire teachers, social workers, parents and grandparents, mentors and politicians. If a piece of my artwork encourages someone to share even one extra moment with a child that otherwise may have been overlooked, then my artwork has served its purpose.
I hope that other artists around the country will be inspired to use their talents to help people. Positive visual images help us to become tolerant of other people and conditions we don’t quite understand. They provide a unique opportunity for us to see what could and often should be. Visual images inspire people into action and help us to remember what our hearts already know. Allow me to paint a picture for you of a world where artist of all mediums create works of art that address the issues that plague our society. Giant, bright and colorful murals adorn all our nation’s cities, encouraging unity and diversity. Our buildings are adorned in murals that salute our educators, doctors and nurses, police and firemen, social workers and psychologists. Schools and Universities are filled with art that inspires the spirit of learning. Statues around all major cities give hope to the homeless, raise the spirits of the poor and foster environments of love and peace.

Shawn Anthony Robinson Ph.D. is a husband and father to Jeremiah and Ezekiel. Dr. Robinson serves on the Board of Directors with the International Dyslexia Association, Senior Research Associate in the Wisconsin's Equity and Inclusion Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin Madison, and an international and national educational consultant His research focuses on the intersection of race and dyslexia and has over 40 peer-reviewed publications, which has been widely disseminated.
He is also the co-author of the graphic novel Doctor Dyslexia Dude. Dr. Robinson has received several distinguished honors throughout his early career such as: 2019 membership to the Diversity of Scholars Network (University of Michigan); the 2017 Alumni Achievement Award (New Trier High School Alumni Hall of Honor); the 2016 Outstanding Young Alumni Award (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh); a 2015 fellow for the 8th Annual Asa G. Hilliard III and Barbara A. Sizemore Research Institute on African Americans and Education (American Educational Research Association); attendee at the 2013 Achievement Gap Institute (Vanderbilt University Peabody College of Education and Human Development); and 2005 Educator of the Year Award (All State Insurance, Chicago, IL).

Debbie’s lengthy professional career is in nonprofit management and fundraising. She lives in Central Harlem with her [dyslexic] husband and son.

As a parent of 2 dyslexic boys, I am always on the hunt for great assistive technology that they can use in the classroom. We know that the use of assistive technology can ignited a passion and transformed a life of students with learning disabilities. Parents and teachers need a understanding of what this assistive tech can do for their students.

Today’s we’ll be speaking with Lisa Flores about the unseen consequences with remote learning.
Lisa Flores started her advocacy work, like so many parents, as an advocate for her own child. She is a graduate of Texas Partners in Policymaking class of 2018. She is currently serving on the HB3 Special Education Funding Allotment Committee.
She is a self- taught legislative advocate and was an avid volunteer with many disability organizations, before starting to work as an advocacy specialist for Easter Seals. As a Latina, her area of interest is helping Spanish speakers learn to advocate as well as special education.
Her dedication to advocacy is born from a simple commitment to advocate at any and every opportunity. In her free time, she sews for hairless cats and is an avid Star Wars fanatic.

| Today’s we’ll be speaking with Dr. Kelli Sandman-Hurley about the adult side of Dyslexia. Kelli Sandman-Hurley, Ed.D. is an author and co-founder of the Dyslexia Training Institute. She received her doctorate in literacy with a specialization in reading and dyslexia from San Diego State University and the University of San Diego. She is also completing her TESOL certification.
Dr. Kelli is a certified special education advocate assisting parents and children through the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and 504 Plan process. She has training in mediation and also serves as an expert witness in the area of dyslexia. Dr. Kelli is trained in Structured Word Inquiry, the Orton-Gillingham approach, Lindamood-Bell, RAVE-O and Read Naturally.
Dr. Kelli is a Past-President of the San Diego Branch of the International Dyslexia Association. She is a dyslexia consultant working with schools to improve services offered to students with dyslexia and training teachers. She co-created and produced “Dyslexia for a Day: A Simulation of Dyslexia,” and she is a frequent speaker at conferences.
She is the author of the well-received book, Dyslexia Advocate! How to Advocate for a Child with Dyslexia within the Public Education System.

About Lois Letchford Lois Letchford’s dyslexia came to light at the age of 39, when she faced teaching her seven-year-old non-reading son, Nicholas. Examining her reading failure caused her to adapt and change lessons for her son. The results were dramatic. Lois qualified as a reading specialist to use her non-traditional background, multi-continental experience and passion to assist other failing students. Her teaching and learning have equipped her with a unique skill set and perspective. As a teacher, she considers herself a “literacy problem-solver.” Reversed: A Memoir is her first book. In this story, she details her dyslexia and the journey of her son’s dramatic failure in first grade. She tells of the twist and turns that promoted her passion and her son’s dramatic academic turn-a-round.

child. She is a graduate of Texas Partners in Policymaking class of 2018. She is currently
serving on the HB3 Special Education Funding Allotment Committee.
She is a self- taught legislative advocate and was an avid volunteer with many disability organizations, before starting to work as an advocacy specialist for Easter Seals. As a Latina, her area of interest is helping Spanish speakers learn to advocate as well as special education.
Her dedication to advocacy is born from a simple commitment to advocate at any and every opportunity. In her free time, she sews for hairless cats and is an avid Star Wars fanatic.

About Hilderbrand Pelzer III: Hilderbrand Pelzer III is an award-winning educator with three decades of wide-ranging experience in the urban educational field. Having served in wide-ranging capacity as an assistant regional superintendent, a high school principal, an elementary school principal, an assistant principal, and a teacher, Pelzer is highly familiar with the interconnected pathway of educational problems and solutions from the classroom to the district level. As the author of Unlocking Potential: Organizing a School Inside a Prison, Pelzer has earned a national reputation for his achievements in expanding opportunities in highly challenging schools and educational environments. His enthusiasm for student achievement represents a career-long commitment that began as a first-year teacher at the Bensalem Youth Development Center, a state facility serving incarcerated male juveniles. Since then, his career has been distinguished by the intersection of education and incarceration. His passion for education and disadvantaged youth has equipped him to meet the needs of the most underserved students, demonstrated in his achievement of the Moral and Courageous Exemplar Urban Educational Leadership Award. Pelzer is also a writer, contributor, and speaker. He highlights issues in urban education, ranging from the challenges faced by schools to their solutions. Among his many notable accomplishments is the creation of an evidence-based school model for serious and high-risk youth offenders in Philadelphia’s correctional facilities. He is a TEDx speaker, and his captivating TEDx talk “What Incarcerated Youth Can Teach Teachers” addressed students’ reading difficulties and what incarcerated youth can do to bring the severity of their inadequate reading instruction to the attention of aspiring teachers before their first lesson. Pelzer’s perspective on education is defined by incarcerated youths’ experience with school failure and the belief that their insights can strengthen educators understanding of where to raise the bar in teaching.

Her parents, who came to New York from Puerto Rico, understood the value of education and made sure she received a good one. She attended her neighborhood school, then Fordham University, where she graduated with a Bachelor's in Psychology, and finally Hunter College CUNY for a Master's of Social Work. Dr. Conway is trained in lifespan clinical neuropsychology with a specialty in The Morris Center's (TMC) 30+ years of a robust, evidence-based, Trans-disciplinary Team approach to assessment & treatment. The TMC team can include Neuropsych, Speech, OT, Developmental/Behavioral Peds, Rec Therapy, School Psych, Clinical Psych, Psychiatry & Education. TMC services are Trans-disciplinary Team assessment to effectively plan & provide team treatment for the language, sensory, motor, attention, behavior, executive function/cognitive & academic deficits found in many disorders, eg, Dyslexia, Specific Learning Disorder in Reading or Writing or Arithmetic, Phonological Alexia, Sensory Processing Disorder, ADHD, Autism, Language Disorders, Dyspraxia, CP, NF1 & Neuro-developmental Disorders.

David A. Kilpatrick, PhD is a professor of psychology for the State University of New York College at Cortland. He is a New York State certified school psychologist with 28 years experience in schools. He has been teaching courses in learning disabilities and educational psychology since 1994. Dr. Gina Forchelli is a Licensed Child Psychologist and Nationally Certified School Psychologist at the Learning and Emotional Assessment Program (LEAP) within the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. She is the Co-Director of Postdoctoral Training at LEAP and an Instructor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Forchelli received a dual B.A.in psychology and music at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. She completed her M.Ed. in School Psychology at Teachers College-Columbia University in New York, NY. Before returning to complete her Ph.D., she worked as a school psychology intern within the White Plains School District in NY. Her Ph.D. was completed at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.
Dr. Forchelli specializes in pediatric neuropsychological, psychological, and educational assessment of children and adolescents with learning, emotional, and behavioral concerns. She works closely with children with Dyslexia and other Specific Learning Disorders, AD/HD, Developmental Trauma/PTSD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Depression, and Anxiety. She has completed training across multiple settings including an outpatient trauma-based clinic, residential therapeutic school, public school, and post-secondary/college settings.
Her research, professional, and clinical interests aim to facilitate understanding across providers on the management and appropriate intervention needed for children/adolescents with highly complex cognitive, academic, and social-emotional needs.
Dr. Forchelli’s most recent publications focus on children with learning disabilities, executive functions, processing speed and the interplay with psychological health. Her work has been presented at meetings for the American Psychological Association and National Association of School Psychologists.

Adrianne Meldrum is the founder and owner of Math for Middles, an online math tutoring center focused on serving students with the gifts of dyslexia, ADHD, and autism. She’s a certified teacher and has been tutoring students since 2006. She received multisensory math training from Marilyn Zecher and is close to achieving trainer status. Adrianne is married with three boys. She lives in Boise, Idaho where she enjoys the outdoors. Currently she’s a graduate student at Bridges Academy working towards a Masters of Cognitive Diversity in Education.

•Since 2001, Dr. Heather Stephens has conducted over 1000 individual educational evaluations through her company, Academic Evaluation & Diagnosis. Since developing her independent practice, Dr. Stephens has consulted with hundreds of different school districts and private schools, colleges, and universities. She frequently works in consultation with other specialists and has provided professional development training for numerous organizations and private schools.
•Dr. Stephens has over twenty years of experience in the field of education. Dr. Stephens earned a Master of Teaching in Special Education from the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. She holds an additional Masters in Psychology and a Doctorate of Education in Supervision, Curriculum, and Instruction-Elementary Education with an interdisciplinary minor in Reading from Texas A&M University-Commerce. She has recently completed a specialty program in school neuropsychology. She previously taught general and special education in the Dallas Independent School District and served as a Master Reading Teacher and Dyslexia Coordinator. Dr. Stephens is a board-registered member of the Texas Professional Educational Diagnosticians and previously served on the National Certification of Educational Diagnosticians Board of Directors.
•Dr. Stephens has specialized training from the McGuffey Reading Clinic at the University of Virginia and the Institute for Clinical Services at Texas Woman’s University. She has received much ongoing professional development including the Highland Park Multi-Sensory Approach to Language Arts, the Shelton Sequential English Education (SEE) program, and Scottish Rite Hospital’s Dyslexia Identification Intervention program. She is certified in Texas in a variety of areas including being an All-Level Reading Specialist (PK-12), Master Reading Teacher (EC-12) and teacher of English as a Second Language (EC-12).

Dr. Dreiling sought out a liberal arts education as an undergraduate, as he knew he would be focusing on science in medical school. Within the Plan II major at UT-Austin, he had study concentrations in biomedical ethics and film history. Dr. Dreiling decided on pediatrics as his held during his third year medical school rotation and has not regretted it for a single moment.
Dr. Dreiling has been happily married for 17 years to his wife, Rachel, who is a pediatric nurse practitioner, actress, and awesome mom. He has been blessed with two healthy and energetic children who keep them quite busy. Outside of the office, he continues to engage and study film and music and enjoy traveling with his family. He has played piano since he was six years old, and always tries to find time to practice!

Two high school students from a small town in Texas began
working on a school project about Dyslexia. They soon began to
feel an overwhelming passion about Dyslexia because one of the
participants Lily was diagnosed at a young age. To expand
knowledge about Dyslexia and the issues that many students face
they decided to start the 1-in-5 necklace campaign. 1-in-5 people
suffer from Dyslexia.
Lily just graduated from Midlothian Heritage High School. During her senior year she joined FCCLA and decided to do a STAR EVENT with her best friend, Genesis. After, throwing around many ideas they chose Dyslexia as their topic to compete in the advocacy category. As the project went on more and more opportunities presented themselves. Lily will be attending Tyler Junior College in the fall under General Studies for her first year. She also just got a job working for American Dance and Drill Team.
Genesis is a senior in High School. Last year I was president of FCCLA and decided to a STAR event project with Lily. We took our passion and determination and put it all into our Advocacy Project titled Decoding Dyslexia. This project brought home first at regionals and state. We also had the opportunity to participate in the National FCCLA conference. After a week in Anaheim California we were honored to receive a Gold medal and the highest score within our event in the Nation.

Join Empower Dyslexia as we speak with Amber Carter Jones about her journey in parent advocacy.
Amber's real job is as an historic preservation consultant working throughout the state of Arkansas. She is a specialist in Federal and State Historic Tax Credits and listing properties to the National Register. Amber's three daughters are all affected by dyslexia, however, it was her youngest child, Rory, age 16 now, who struggled the most and could not figure out reading or spelling at all, the way her school was teaching it. The typical struggles with getting this child the appropriate educational services led Amber to become a passionate dyslexia advocate for other students and families affected by dyslexia. She is a founding member of the Arkansas Dyslexia Support Group which provides free advocacy services to parents of students with Dyslexia. The group has been effective at the state legislature with the passage of two dyslexia laws and four literacy laws passed concerning the Science of Reading for all K-12 students

Today we had the honor to speak with Speaker of the Texas House Dennis Bonnen. We speak about all of the new laws passed this year and his own struggles with dyslexia.
Speaker of the Texas House Dennis Bonnen (District 25) The Honorable Dennis Bonnen was unanimously elected Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives on January 8, 2019. Speaker Bonnen has served in the Texas House of Representatives for over 20 years, representing southern Brazoria County and the entirety of Matagorda County. Prior to his election as Speaker, Bonnen served as Speaker Pro Tempore beginning in 2013. He has previously served as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, as a member of the House Culture, Recreation & amp; Tourism Committee, Chairman of the Sunset Advisory Committee and the House Special Purpose Districts Committee, Vice Chairman of the Joint Committee of Oversight of Higher Education Governance, Excellence and Transparency; and as a member of the Natural Resources Committee. Speaker Bonnen resides with his wife, Kim, and their two sons in Lake Jackson, Texas. In addition to his legislative duties, he is the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Heritage Bank.

Michael Vitullo graduated as a top 10 student in the Class of 2016 from The Shelton School of Dallas. He is currently a student at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas and is majoring in Psychology with a minor in Spanish. He has studied abroad for a semester in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At Southwestern, he serves on the Honor Code Council and is an elected official in the Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity. He was diagnosed with ADHD and Dyslexia in the 2nd Grade and later diagnosed with Dysgraphia in the 4th Grade. He is spending this summer as an intern at a law firm in Dallas and plans to pursue law school following college graduation.
Jennie is a sophomore college student at Abilene Christian University majoring in special education elementary. She was diagnosed with dyslexia at age 5 and struggled with school ever since. She danced her whole life and taught dance to kids to distract her from everything going on at school. Her parents pulled her out of school to homeschooled from 8th-12th grade and is only reason why she decided to go to college. Having a disability she wants to be able to teach kids that have similar problems like she does. In the summer she enjoys volunteer at a special eduction clinic in Dallas. During her first year of college she has made the deans list twice, in a learning disability program, and is on the first ever dance team at ACU.

It was 3 years ago this month that they filed a lawsuit against Leander ISD in Cedar Park, TX., for failing to provide their son a Free and Appropriate Education (A.K.A. FAPE), to address his unique educational needs. The appointed Hearing Officer (Judge) found in their favor. It was the first time a parent had won against LISD in Texas Education Agency history. LISD appealed that decision. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled in their favor, confirming their son is eligible for Special Education.
