If you've listened to this show you are familiar with a couple of my Australian friends, Joel Fulton and Daniel Mummery. A couple months ago, Daniel was able to get his first sambar deer stag. In early August, he and Joel went deep into the backcountry by bicycle and Joel was up on the trigger this time. With Daniel having some back trouble, they weren't sure how the hunt would go and some doubts started to creep in. All of a sudden, God decided to give them a gift.

It wasn't an easy hunt and he unpacks how it all worked out on the day before his season would end. It's a fun conversation and some great life lessons at the end!
Today I'm joined by a local whitetail legend named Rich Wynn. Rich wouldn't call himself a legend. He'd just say he's been blessed. He's been able to harvest quite a few Ohio big bucks along with some from other states as well. Today he shares some of these stories along with his first elk with a recurve bow and the time he had to run down and tackle an antelope!

Today I'm joined in the car with my buddy, and personal trainer, Todd Hartman as we come home from the Total Archery Challenge. We had a great time at TAC! Todd just got into archery a couple months back and got to experience the camaraderie of archery and meet some nice folks. We unpack how he got into archery and how fitness relates to it. Today I am rejoined by my local friend Jesse Roush of SE Ohio. Jesse was first in the show in 2020 (EP. 54) and introduced us to "The Farm With No Name". We get an update on the farm and the work Jesse has put into it. We talk about some fun hunts he's had on it including his daughters buck from the ground last year.

Today we meet Jim Nelson, Iowa native, and avid pheasant, deer, and turkey hunter. Jim tells some funny stories and some great experiences but highlights a near death encounter that happened only a week or so ago. Jim did all the right things and still nearly lost his life as he climbed up his sticks with lineman's belt attached. I'd encourage you to listen to this one and take some mental notes of what you'd have done in his situation and ways in which you can be even safer on your next hunt.
A hunt isn't just a hunt. There's always more to the story and things happening in our lives that surround a hunt. Such was the case for 2022 and Wyatt Damron. Today he tells not only the story of a giant buck he was able to get on but also the story of his dad's fight for survival. It's a beautiful story.

Today I'm joined by Holly Ziegler, the wife of my wife's cousin. Holly was able to harvest her very first antlered buck this past week...from the treestand...8 months pregnant! She shares a little how she got into hunting and how it all went down. She had spent some time in the woods and was "due" for a great encounter! Congrats Holly!

On this episode Matt Dove and I are in the truck on our way home from our 2022 Montana Elk Trip. We recap the day by day experience and unpack all the action...and there was a lot of action (hence a 2 hour podcast!). We chased bugles 5 out of 7 days. When Gary Meinke heard about a study where they had banded some turkeys in Colorado, he had hoped he'd get the chance to get one. But after a few years passed, he figured his opportunity was slim to none. Yet that luck changed and he was no only able to get one, but two banded Toms in one year!
Gary also tells the incredible story of a 28 year wait between his first Bighorn Sheep and his 2nd.

Yet on his first out of state whitetail hunt to Missouri, Josh had some struggles. A few plans didnt work out and that left Josh in a low point wondering where to go. He kept going and that led him to a new spot and his first ever, out of state buck. Incredible story with a great guy.

There's nothing like getting a call from your buddy right after dark telling you he's shot a buck. I got that call on Saturday night, October 16th from my good friend and Shedding Light Outdoors member Travis Shirer. Today he joins me on the show to unpack that story and all that went into it. Trav had to have shoulder surgery at the start of the year and wasn't sure if he'd ever shoot a bow again. Fortunately he was able to recover well and continued his 3 year streak of taking a buck in October.

Sometimes there's such a thing as beginner's luck. Hunters go out the first time and it just pans out. A deer steps out into the open, they make a great shot, and that's the story. That was not the story for Nick Brannon. Nick wasn't raised in a hunting family but decided at age 15 to give hunting a try. This past October, four years after his first hunt, he was able to take his first deer, a nice 8pt (4x4) buck! He does a fantastic job telling that story.

every once in a while you come across a crazy video on YouTube that makes your jaw drop. In late March a video came out of a black bear in the Smokey Mountains attacking a large wild hog...right next to a public road. That video has over 4 million views and has quite the explosive comment section.

The person whole pulled out their phone and recorded it is Philip Talbot from Alabama. Philip comes on the show today to tell that story and how everything went down that day and also to talk about the response to that video including some hate mail that he has received.
Philip is an avid hunter so we also get to hear about some of his early season turkey success along with a nice big buck he harvested earlier this year! He also has a YouTube channel you should check out called Old Skull Outdoors.

Matt Dale is a guy who's been hunting turkeys for a long time and is willing to share what he's learned with others. Today we are joined by a very special guest...or at least he is to me...my brother from the same mother, Jacob Williams. In 2019 my brother and his family moved into the house where we grew up. And on that property was a buck my dad and he named "Goofy" prior to my dad passing in 2018. My brother hunted hard for him in 2019 but wasn't able to get on him. On September 27, 2020 Casey and his girlfriend Cami went into the woods to check trail cams. He drove onto the property in an ATV and left in an ambulance.

Some of us dream of being big buck killers. We think if we could just get that booner we'd be happy. Brian Menke has been there. In fact he's killed that big deer along with several others. But that, combined with some other life issues, left him still feeling empty. That all changed when he picked up a trad bow. And this year, he was able to have success in the early season of Kentucky. This is an amazing and inspirational story.

Spoiler- An arrow was fired but no bucks down. I had some great encounters with big bucks and I talk about lessons learned.
