If you've listened to this show you are familiar with a couple of my Australian friends, Joel Fulton and Daniel Mummery. A couple months ago, Daniel was able to get his first sambar deer stag. In early August, he and Joel went deep into the backcountry by bicycle and Joel was up on the trigger this time. With Daniel having some back trouble, they weren't sure how the hunt would go and some doubts started to creep in. All of a sudden, God decided to give them a gift.

A hunt isn't just a hunt. There's always more to the story and things happening in our lives that surround a hunt. Such was the case for 2022 and Wyatt Damron. Today he tells not only the story of a giant buck he was able to get on but also the story of his dad's fight for survival. It's a beautiful story.

Jansen does a fantastic job telling these stories and also explaining how he balances hunting and home life.

On October 17th, my wife had a meeting up until 5:45pm but the conditions were right for me to go hunt a property I gained access on last year. From the time I pulled into the property to the time the arrow launched, only 25 minutes had elapsed. In this bonus episode I unpack what happened and the lessons learned. And I throw in one tip that might just save your hunting season.

"I've always dreamed of going elk hunting". I've heard guys say that all the time yet many have never taken any steps to make that a reality. Why? I think for various reasons usually relating to money, family, and the overwhelming amount of info out there. In this episode I want to breakdown how to begin the process and what you need to understand in order for this to become a reality.

I cover topics like cost (how to pay for it), OTC vs Draw Units, guided hunts vs DIY, lodging, pre-season prep, hunting partners, family concerns, and more. At the end we dive into a deeper topic on the dreams we have of becoming better people.

There are many other resources available and this is just an generalized overview. Hoping it is helpful. Questions? Send me an email at sheddinglightod@gmail.com

Sometimes there's such a thing as beginner's luck. Hunters go out the first time and it just pans out. A deer steps out into the open, they make a great shot, and that's the story. That was not the story for Nick Brannon. Nick wasn't raised in a hunting family but decided at age 15 to give hunting a try. This past October, four years after his first hunt, he was able to take his first deer, a nice 8pt (4x4) buck! He does a fantastic job telling that story.

Today you are stuck with yours truly, Travis Williams. I've been turkey hunting since 2014. In that time I've managed to somehow kill 6 Toms. I've also managed to have 3 years where I got skunked! Turkey hunting really can be a blast but also is intimidating to start out. Today I share every turkey I've killed and the lessons I learned from each scenario. I'm no expert but I'm happy to share some tips and tricks I've learned along the way and hopefully it can be helpful to you.

We all have a lot of hunting stories. If you came on the show (which you are more than welcome to do!) I'd guess that you could tell a few. But which one would you pick? I'm guessing if you're like our guest Ray Kapalka, or just about any other guest, you'd tell stories that mean something to you. Your first deer, your biggest buck, that time you spent with your dad, grandpa, kid, or friend in the woods.

I love hearing these stories and today's guest does a great job sharing his. If you'd like to come on the show send me an email at sheddinglightod@gmail.com.

If you’re new, go listen to another episode as this one probably won’t be that good! Wasn’t able to line up a guest this week due to everyone hunting the rut hard. So I give a play by play update of my hunts on Nov 9,10, and 12. In those three days I saw a total of 10 or so bucks and several does.

Spoiler- An arrow was fired but no bucks down. I had some great encounters with big bucks and I talk about lessons learned.

Also talk about ethical shooting distance, shooting “mature” bucks vs shooting big racks or spikes, getting essential oils in my eyeball, and several other life lessons.

If you listen to this whole thing, you must be a fan and I super appreciate that. Got some good guests lined up for the next few weeks so it should be fun!
