Nathan Graham is a singer songwriter out of Chicago, Illinois. He cut his chops playing the blues at the clubs around Chicago and gained a reputation as a backup blues guitarist and session musician. In October 2023 he released his debut album called Saint of Second Chances. A cool mix of soul, americana, and blues, the album tells his story. Check him out on December 31 at the Acorn Theater where he will be opening for Shemekia Copeland.
The Erly is a Niles, Michigan based "modern disco" band consisting of drummer Fran Gleason, Bassist Collin Mattiford, Guitarist Trevor McDonald, and keyboardist Alyssa Serviss. Their new album, "Culture Fever," comes out on November 3 2023. Don't miss their album release party at the Acorn Theater on November 3.
Jon Goldfine and Ben Wright are the founders of the Chicago based Bluegrass band, The Henhouse Prowlers. Last week they issued their 10th album, "Iron and Lead." On top of that, for the last 10 years, they have acted as Bluegrass Ambassadors through the US State Department and otherwise bringing American culture to distant parts of the world. They have also taken those presentation skills and created a non-profit that brings music programs to schools around the country. Make sure to check them out at the Acorn Theater on October 27.
Bowmanville is a Jazz band based out of Chicago with with a Hot club jazz from 1930's Paris style. It was a pleasure talking with Ethan, Mason, and Graham. Check out their show on August 18 at the Acorn.
Luke and Adrienne are the owners of the Collective Yoga studio and Rebel Cafe in Benton Harbor. Aside from their regular awesome offerings, the are excited to share their big event, Karma Yogafest. Jim Bilger's knowledge of Grateful Dead lore runs deep. So, it is no surprise that he has gathered outstanding musicians around him to create a Dead cover band that is mindful about the Grateful Dead's roots when performing. Trouble Ahead has only been around for about 6 years, but they know their Grateful Dead music and pride themselves on their improvisational skills. Check out their show at the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks on August 4.
Naomi Ashley got her start in music after moving to Chicago and working in Comedy Improv. Initially, her songs were part of the joke and then she got serious in her writing. She gave up improv and began playing folk/country music in the early 2000s and since then has issued at least two albums and is getting ready to go into the studio to make another. In 2018, Ralph Baumel saw her perform a Pretenders song on stage and something clicked. They formed the Real Pretenders and have been delighting audiences since. Check them out at the Acorn Theater on May 28 performing the entire Pretenders "Learning To Crawl" album and Lucinda Williams 1996 album, "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road."
Jim Peterik is a true legend. He formed the Ides of March in 1964 at the age of 14 while attending high school in the western suburbs of Chicago. They had their first big hit when he turned 16 and then in 1970, their song "Vehicle" hit number 2 on the Billboard chart. This lead to him opening for some of the huge bands of the time, including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, and Led Zeppelin. In 1973, The Ides of March took a hiatus and he formed the band Survivor. In 1990, he returned to his roots with the Ides of March and they have been playing ever since. In almost 60 years of being a professional, he has written approximately 5,000 songs (many cowritten for others) and has collected 100s of vintage guitars. A very interesting guy for sure; check out the show!
Brian McClure is the Irish music expert around Harbor Country. He learned to play the violin as a kid and played in the school orchestra, but it wasn't until a local bar asked him to play Irish songs that he dug back into his past, taught himself irish songs, and began playing. Since he moved to the area approximately 3 years ago, he has made music his full time gig. Look for him on most weekends playing at the bars, breweries, and wineries around harbor country.
Kofi Baker is on a mission. Some musicians are happy to play other's music as a tribute to the original musician. Kofi has worked most of his life to hone his drumming skills to honor the legacy of his father, Ginger Baker. From the early age of 3 when his father first began teaching him to drum to the present where he has brought together outstanding musicians to carry on the legacy of his father's music, Kofi worked hard to learn everything his father could teach him and is taking it to the next level. It wasn't an easy path, but he has come through it with grace and honor. Looking forward to seeing him play at the Acorn Theater on February 3.
What a pleasure to have my old friend Ron Spears on the show with the awesome and talented Dino Jackson. Ron and Dino recently formed a duo (as yet unnamed) to play blues standards. We were fortunate enough to hear them play "Freight Train" and "How Long Blues." Don't miss their appearance at the Acorn Open Mic on January 13.

Matthew "Wayne" Gillon is the multi instrumentalist drummer from the band Skirt with musical influences ranging from Hip Hop to Reggae. He played for years with local band, Midwest Hype, and then moved to San Diego, CA where he honed his guitar skills only to decide that what he really wanted to do was be a drummer. After connecting with Nate and Kyla Webb at an open mic in Michigan City, they decided to form the band Skirt. Check them out at the Acorn Theater on New Years when they open for the Edgar Wilbury Experience.
Kyla Webb began her career as an actress where she was perpetually typecast in school plays as the "little sister" or "neighbor". She began to shine when she started doing variety shows where she could show off her witty writing and stage banter. She really hit her stride, however, when she formed her band Skirt with members of Midwest Hype and other friends who she met at the open mic at the Shoreline Brewery in Michigan City, IN. Her next step is to begin recording an album and taking her band to the next level. Don't miss her at the Acorn on New Years where she will be opening for the Edgar Wilbury Experience. She can also be seen most Tuesday nights at the open mic at the Shoreline.
Abbie Thomas has been playing music since she was a little kid, but it took the birth of her own child for her to realize that the corporate life was not for her and she should be playing music all the time. She has since released an album, an EP, and just released a single of White Christmas (just in time). Look out for her collaboration this spring with the Elkhart, Indiana symphony orchestra.
Buddy Pearson is a working jazz bass player from South Bend, Indiana. From funky to traditional, he gets opportunities to do it all. He has been playing as Freak Johnson and the Buddy Pearson 3. Check him out with Freak Johnson at Leroy's Hot stuff in December 16.
After getting comfortable on the violin and guitar, Calvin Conway first learned to play blues harmonica when he worked at the House of Blues. He got the inspiration for his album, Dark House Deluxe, after taking a cross country train ride from Chicago through Austin to New Orleans. He has developed a musical style reminiscent of old time delta blues that is rare these days. Check out the interview and look for him playing at one of the local establishments in Harbor Country.
Jack Adams (aka St. Joe Jack) is a local guitarist and singer songwriter. Raised on classic rock, he brings his bluegrass inspired tunes to people all over Southwest Michigan. Check it out!
Bruce Katz has been playing some kind of keyboard since he was 5 years old. He is not only formally educated in music, having attended the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory in Boston, but he has also had a lifetime of education playing jazz and the blues. The list of musicians that he has played with includes John Hammond, Big Mama Thornton, Delbert McClinton, and Ronnie Earl. He has also enjoyed a significant career playing with the Allman Brothers and different manifestations of that group, including Greg Allman, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe, and Oteil Burbridge. Cam Mammina has been playing guitar since he was about 8 years old and recording music since his teens. He is one of the founders of Slim Gypsy Baggage and a recent addition to Michigan based Bonehawk. When he is not selling real estate or playing music, he can be found taking care of business at his awesome new bar/food/music concept called Sideyard in Sawyer, MI.
Tim Vanderlin is a long term guitar player. Of the three bands he's played in during his life, he continues to play with two. Chester Brown was formed in the early 2000s when Tim was just learning the guitar. 20 years later, he joined Chester Brown guitarist Mike Knealand at his side project, Stealin the Farm. Now, Tim gets to play extended jams and create on the fly all the time.
When Tim is not actually performing, he is busy organizing Chester Brown's annual festival, Brown Town. On its 12th year, Brown Town features all the best local jam bands in a tranquil setting along the Tippecanoe River in Northwest Indiana. When Scott Hildebrand was visiting a friend in Berlin a few years ago, he got the itch to perform on a street corner (commonly referred to as "Busking"). He got the audience to sing along and throughout the song he heard a beautiful voice coming from the back. It was Lila. He invited her up to sing with him and the rest is history. Since then, the couple have travelled the world playing and recording their music; Scott won the Acorn Theater Singer songwriting competition in 2021 (they wouldn't let Lila into the country because of Covid restrictions); he began writing a book about busking; and Scott & Lila are back at the Acorn on Friday August 29 to play their beautiful music together. Jillian Speece and Nathanial Hoff are living their best lives. They tour around the country playing their heartfelt music with their band, "The Bergamot" and have the secondary effect of bringing people together. 6.5 years ago, they began filming a documentary called "State of the Unity". They finished the movie earlier this year and began their tour of the movie at various film festivals. It turns out that just getting accepted to present your film at a film festival is a huge achievement; they keep winning prizes. John Ragusa is a multi-instrumentalist who plays various wind instruments (flute, mini trumpet, mouth harp) with singer, songwriter and guitarist, Hugh Pool. Together, they are the blue duo known as Mulebone. Check them out on July 9 at the Livery in Benton Harbor.
Dan Moore from the Dan Moore Band started out as a drummer (and even travelled with a drum corps group after high school); Marcus Safirt from Stealin the Farm also joined Adam Conley and I. The Three of them had the chance to back up Jim Belushi a few weeks ago when Jim came to town to play some blues to some investors in a venture Jim is starting in Harbor Country. I was lucky enough to get to sit down with them to talk about their experience, their music, and the local music scene.
Great to have Adam back on the show. Howie is a drummer who has played with Tree and the Beer Hippies. Most recently, both of them provided back up to Jim Belushi for a blues set at a private gig in Buchanan.
Brian Barber is a musician and sound engineer. He's a little unusual in that he avoids live performances, but his music is no less creative. He has incorporated his love of sound engineering into his love of music composition and is creating music using advanced mixing tools. Check out the show and look out for his new creations coming your way.
Rob Lemon has been playing the drums for more than 40 years. This is Randy's 5th time on the show. They are back with Bone Naked and this is their debut. Glad to get a chance to talk with them and looking forward to their upcoming shows.
Kait Rose is a singer/songwriter from Kalamazoo, Michigan. She has been singing, playing guitar, and recording music since high school. She is releasing her next album, "Balance", in August at an album release party at Bell's Brewery, but before that she is coming to the Acorn Theater and The Livery during the second week of July. Johnny Iguana began playing classic piano at a young age. He gravitated to Punk Rock and then an uncle introduced him to the blues. He set an intention and suddenly found himself playing with Junior Wells and his band and then Otis Rush. Johnny's piano playing has been described as Punk/Blues; regardless of the genre, it is completely authentic and original. In 2013, he and drummer Michael Caskey released their first Claudettes Album, which was entirely instrumental. A few years later they welcomed Zach Verdoorn on bass six and Berit Ulseth on vocals and that is the magical combination they are sticking with. Check them out at the Acorn Theater on May 7!
Abe Partridge is a singer songwriter from Mobile, Alabama who has taken a different path to the music world. He was a fundamentalist preacher in Kentucky for 9 years and was inspired by Son House to find a new way to express himself. He began writing songs and painting pictures to release the negative feelings he had. After returning from the Air Force in the middle east, he entered a singer songwriting contest where, despite it being his first time performing in front of people, he made it to the finals. That led to a collaboration with a producer that resulted in his debut album in 2018 and a visual art career. He has since toured Europe, released another album, and is putting the final touches on his third album. Check him out at the Acorn Theater on Friday April 29, where he will also be displaying his visual art work.
Joe George is a singer songwriter from Chicago, but that does not even begin to tell the story. A graduate of the Berklee Colege of Music in Boston, he has played in punk bands, written scores for movies, toured all over the world, started the Red Room in Bucktown with his cousin, produces and writes with other musicians, and creates video content for Reverb's You tube channel. He is coming to the Acorn Theater on April 30 to release his newest album! Don't miss it!
Mike Struwin is a local singer songwriter who has been playing and writing songs since he was 13. He has been involved in bands such as Hammertoe and Steamboat, but is keeping it simple with his latest band called the Mike Struwin Band (which JSS interviewees Mike Nelson [Ep 8] and Matt Sypian [Ep 1]). Check him and the band out at the Livery on April 29 and also at the Acorn Theater on July 20.
The Resurrection Blues Band is a three piece band (can you say Power Trio) based out of Harbor Country. Rodney Mills on Guitar and Vocals, Scott Ovens on drums, and Mike Balmes on bass. Keeping the blues alive with their original tunes. Don't miss their show at the Acorn Theater on April 2 where they are opening for The Erly.
Beth Bradfish is a sound artist, currently in the process of curating an installation at the Chicago Cultural Center. She began playing piano at the age of 7 and became quite accomplished; she studied music theory and piano through high school and into college. It was at that point that she pivoted and became a folk singer travelling around Europe during her sophomore year of college. She then took more than 20 years off of music while she pursued other interests and a career. Fast forward to 2013 when she went back to school for music theory, getting both a bachelor's degree and MFA in Music. Her symphony composition career morphed into an interest in natural sounds and thus began her work as a sound Artist. You'll just have to listen to get a real sense of her art. :)
Josh Shilling is a songwriter, singer, and piano player. He began playing piano at a young age at the level where he got to play gigs before the age of ten. In 2007, he joined Mountain Heart (which had been around since 1998) and immediately found success. In his first few months, he played at the Grand Ole Opry and went on tour opening for Lynard Skynard. In between runs with Mountain Heart, he spends his time writing songs, doing session work, and collaborating with other musicians. Ron Spears has been playing guitar since he was 15. He took a little break after he got married and built his French Wine import business. In 2010, he got his old Martin repaired and began playing again with purpose. He now teaches guitar and practices 2-3 hours a day. He currently play jazz with as a duo and with a big band out of New Carlisle, IN. Welcome back to Ron (he was on episode 22).
Robert Rolfe Feddersen is the hardest working man in show business (to borrow a phrase). Lead guitarist and singer of the 90s hard rock band Loudmouth, he transitioned to solo work with his singer percussionist wife Teri Ann and they have not looked back. Together, they play 150 shows a year at breweries and wineries from Wisconsin to Michigan. They make every show a party and Bob is getting ready to release his 10th album of original music. He has written over a hundred songs, each one from the heart.
Tony D'Annunzio is the director and producer of the documentary movie, "Louder Than Love: The Grande Ballroom Story", which is being shown at the Acorn Theater on February 11, 2022. Open from 1966 to 1972, the Grande Ballroom was modeled after the Filmore West in San Francisco and featured musicians from MC5 and The Stooges to The Who and BB King.
Jack Droppers is the lead guitarist and lead singer for the Grand Rapids, Michigan based Americana/Indie Rock band "Jack Droppers and The Best Intentions." Jack started out playing original punk rock music with his buddies in junior high until he was introduced to Bruce Springstein. He then found out that his Dad was a big fan of the Boss and he began gravitating towards music with a story. Fast forward to 2021, when Jack became a father and issued his third LP, "Dad Rock". Ann Campbell and Adrienne White are sound healers, yoga teachers, and Reiki practitioners among other skills. In this episode, we discuss what happens in a soundbath, the instruments that are used and their sources, and the wonderful benefits that a soundbath can provide.
Bob Swan was going to be a doctor, but couldn't imagine being stuck inside all day long. So instead he began an entertainment career where he started as a stage actor, then became a voice over artist, then became a movie actor (remember the assistant coach in Hoosiers?), which led him to a career in opera, which brought him to Harbor Country as a land developer. For the last 17 years, he and his group of professional opera singers have been performing Christmas songs at the Acorn Theater around the holidays. Jillian and Nathaniel are a husband and wife duo who met during high school in South Bend, Indiana when their art teacher pushed them to write a song together to represent their school in a statewide competition (they finished in the top ten). They have been playing together around the country ever since. In 2016, they set out to document their upcoming 263 show tour and ended up with a documentary about unity. Check out their show at the Acorn Theater on December 10!
Miles Nielsen is the lead singer, guitarist, and principle songwriter for his band Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts, but also happens to be the son of Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick. Miles talks about the joys of growing up and raising his family in his hometown of Rockford, Illinois, getting to meet his musical idols, and traveling with his Dad on the road when he was growing up. Check out Miles, his Dad, his brother, and his wife Kelly on the Acorn Stage on December 3 as they perform as "The Nielsen Trust."
Bass player Bill Bielby and his friends formed a band called The Newports when they were in 8th grade in the south suburbs of Chicago. Fast forward to an open mic at the Acorn theater in 2014: Bill called up some of the old members of the band and his friend Jumpin' Gene Halton (on Harmonica) from South Bend and made a plan to play a few songs for old time sake. Thanks to an article by Larry Von Ebeler praising their work that evening, they decided to keep the music going. Since that fateful night, they have grown to a 9 member band featuring a brass section, two guitars, Halton on Harmonica, a drummer, and Bielby on Bass. In 2019, they released their album "Live at the Acorn" and just put out a single, "Goin' Out West" (by Tom Waits); all of which were recorded in Three Oaks by local sound man extraordinaire Evan Margol. Rodger Kelm and Kevin Mansfield are the drummer and bass player respectively for The Red Deluxe Band, a local favorite that continues to evolve. Both were introduced to music as kids growing up in the 50 and 60s and played in bands in high school. While Rodger worked a day job and raised his family, Kevin lived in different parts of the country playing drums with various house bands. When The Red Deluxe Band re-formed in 1985 (as the Jackson Band), Kevin picked up a bass for the first time and has not looked back. 6 years later and The Red Deluxe Band is still going strong. Zev Russ is a yet to be discovered guitar player from Austin, Texas (and also my nephew). He is the lead guitarist for the band, "Wolfman's Brother". In this episode, we talk about Zev's writing style, his compositions, his view of the music scene in Austin, and his plans for his band.
Bryan Lubeck is a Smooth Jazz guitarist and composer. He just released his album Midnight Sun in August 2021 which hit number 1 on Amazon's list of best sellers. He is also hosting the Open Mic at the Acorn on November 11. Don't miss it!
Randy and Bradley Rogers are members of the Bridgman, MI based Red Deluxe Band. The brothers have been playing music together since Bradley was 7 and Randy was 13 and we were fortunate enough to get them to play a couple of songs.
Benny Piazza (aka Benny Boomba) is a drummer, guitar player, music teacher, and pyrotechnics expert. He's the drummer for the Jack Whittle Trio, but loves playing with others. All those roles and he still has time to write his own songs. It was a pleasure getting to hang out with him and hear his original songs. Keep it up Benny!
Chuck Prophet has been making music since he was 12 years old. Originally from Orange County, California, he got his start with the psychedelic/desert rock band Green on Red in the early 80s. In 1990, he put out his first solo album, Brother Aldo, and began making music with his wife Stephanie Finch. Chuck, Stephanie and his band the Mission Express are coming to the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks on October 28, 2021.
Blake Vissing is the lead vocalist, guitar player, and primary songwriter for the Modern Vultures (a Southwest Michigan based band that also includes Adam Conley, Dustin Lowe, and Matt Sypian). In this interview, we discuss their new album, "Live(ry)71721" which was recorded live at the Livery in Benton Harbor, MI two months ago as well as their upcoming concept album.
Randy Rodgers has been playing in bands in Harbor Country since he was 14. He is presently the lead singer and rhythm guitar player for The Red Deluxe Band from Bridgeman, Michigan. He and co-host Adam Conley are also members of the band Bone Naked who are reuniting to play one more gig at a private party. Will Bone Naked play more shows? Check out our conversation.
Dan Navarro is a singer/songwriter, voice over artist, and board member of SAG-AFTRA, He played the first part of his career with his friend Eric Lowen in the band Lowen & Navarro. Dan is schedule to play at the Acorn Theater on August 27, 2021 in what is expected to be an unbelievable show.

Bill and friends formed The Newports in 1961 while Bill was in 8th grade in the South Suburbs of Chicago. In 2014, after a long career in academia and sociology, Bill and friends "got the band back together" and have been kicking butt ever since (except for the pause created by the COVID-19 pandemic).
