Ibraim Nascimento is an international, Afro-Brazilian artist from the historic city of Cachoeira, Bahia. He has exhibited his work throughout Brazil and the United States, from California to Texas.
Iconoclast, an organization associated with Chapelwood, recently commissioned Ibraim to create the cover art for an annual book of poetry that they publish. Today we are joined by Rev. DeAndre Johnson and Pastor Lindsay Kirkpatrick to discuss some changes that are taking place in The United Methodist Church. John Stephens served as a delegate to the United Methodist Church’s General Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. The two-week long process uses the first week to divide into 14 different legislative committees connected to every part of the Book of Discipline, UMC church law and polity. Over 1,100 petitions were submitted and worked on in the legislative committees. The delegates of General Conference are from around the world - USA, Philippines, Europe, Eurasia, and Africa. In the legislative committees, the groups of 40-80 members discuss and debate every petition. Once that work is done, all their actions come to the main body of almost 800 members in week two for all of us to either approve the work they've done, reject it, or amend it.

Today we are joined by a very special guest, Michele Russell! Michele Russell received her Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary in 1995. During her 22 years working in the field of mental health, she served as a staff counselor at Texas Children’s Hospital Learning Support Center and established the Eating Disorder Program at The Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery at Texas Tech University, where she also served as Program Director. In 2014, Michele was the Program Director for the Theology and Community program at Duke Divinity School. From 2015-2017, she served as Social and Emotional Program Specialist at Small Steps Nurturing Center in Houston. Currently, she works at Kagey Family Counseling. Across these unique environments, Michele has found the opportunity to support social and emotional growth and resilience in individuals, families and communities to be deeply challenging and rewarding.

This week we talk about the three temptations of Jesus according to Richard Rohr. In Matthew’s Gospel, the temptations are not just isolated events but profound lessons for us all.

Christmas Manna is a long-standing, much-loved Chapelwood tradition of matching families lacking the resources to buy Christmas toys, new clothes, and "extras" for their children with those willing to share some Christmas blessings. The program blesses the excited children, generous givers, and grateful parents who can breathe a little easier and smile a little brighter watching their children unwrap the tangible and intangible gifts of Christmas. The families are selected by the Communities on Schools managers at the SBISD schools. These counselors work regularly with the families and know who is in need of an extra blessing during Christmas.

Today we talk about a recent mission trip that our producer took to India and the crisis in the slums of Mumbai. The organization that he partnered with is called Asher House.
Asher House is a developmental aid
program created to offer education to the children of India's rural poor. Children starting from Pre K grade levels through Elementary are able to learn basic education in Hindi and English, are provided a quality daily meal and life skills to help their families.

Today we are joined by David Worthington. Since arriving in 2006, David has overseen the development at John Wesley's New Room, including the delivery of the Broadmead Garden project and Horsefair Visitor Centre project. Professor Douglas Campbell was born in London but raised a New Zealander. He did his undergraduate degree in Political Philosophy at the University of Otago in New Zealand, and his graduate degrees in Religious Studies at the University of Toronto in Canada, where he was supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship. He is currently teaching at Duke Divinity School, where he is now a Professor of New Testament and directs the Prison Studies program. Since arriving at Duke in 2003 he has published five books on the apostle Paul. Douglas has two adult children, and is a keen supporter of the arts, as his wife, Rachel, is a painter. He loves the warm weather of North Carolina, and currently lives in downtown Durham with two cats, a dog, and his wife's chickens. Despite qualms in terms of a Christian virtue ethic, he remains passionate about international politics and international rugby.

In 2018, Dr. Levenson officiated and preached at the Memorial Service at St. Martin’s for the late First Lady of the United States, Barbara Pierce Bush. Later, in 2018, he co-officiated and preached at the State Funeral for our 41st President, The Honorable George H.W. Bush at both Washington National Cathedral and the Houston-based memorial service held at St. Martin’s. President and Mrs. Bush were active members at St. Martin’s for over fifty years and served in many roles of leadership and ministry.

Robert Hilliker, LCSW-S, LCDC received his Master’s degree from the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work. Following graduation Robert pursued additional training working as a Post-Graduate Social Work Fellow at The Menninger Clinic. He then completed a two-year fellowship at the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies. Currently, Robert is a doctoral candidate at the Institute for Clinical Social Work in Chicago, IL.

Our paths crossed with Melanie's recently and she immediately began to tell us about Care Net and how God has radically transformed her life. First proposed by Chris Argyris, way back in 1970, the ladder of inference is a way of describing how you move from a piece of data (a comment made to you, or something that you have observed to happen), through a series of mental processes to a conclusion.
