Around the year 1750, Our Lady appeared at the bottom of an abyss and the Andes Mountain Range, 2,600 meters high in today’s Colombian territory. It is not uncommon for the Virgin to manifest in beautiful places, but in Las Lajas, the chosen site was in front of a 80 meter waterfall. The photographs only give us a pale idea of it. The Gothic style church is considered one of the architectural wonders of the world, and according to the testimonials that line the walkway to the church, Las Lajas is rich in miraculous cures! But the most miraculous of all is a portrait of Our Lady and child, along with St Francis and St Dominic, which appears to be painted on the rock.
Historians and Germans geologists bored core samples through various parts of the image. The rock is perfectly colored to a depth of several feet. The picture penetrates into the rock miraculously. Despite meticulous inspections, no brush strokes are visible. There is no paint, no dye, nor any other pigment on the surface of the rock. It is mysteriously and miraculously imprinted. The colors are the colors of the rock itself. Never has nature reproduced human faces with such perfection. No one has ever come up with an explanation for such a phenomenal image and its many tremendous miracles.

Purgatory is the condition or process of purification in which the souls of those die in a state of grace are made ready for Heaven. “All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified are indeed assured of their eternal salvation, but after death they undergo purification so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.” Nothing defiled can enter heaven (Rev. 21:27), and therefore any soul less than perfect must first be cleansed before he can be admitted to the vision of God. The phrase comes from Psalm 81, in which the Jewish peiple are promised that if they turn to God with their whole hearts, they will receive honey from the rock. The psalm reveals God's tender love for his people, the Jewish people. Meribah was where, shortly after the Jews has fled Egypt and entered the desert, they lost confidence in God and were convinced that they had been abandoned to die of thirst in the desert. It was there that they challenged Moses "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?" (Ex 17:3), at which point God told Moses to "take in your hand the rod... [and] strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, that the people may drink." (Ex 17:5-6) At Meribah God gave them water to drink, which was enough to sustain life. When Jews turn to Him with their whole hearts, He will give them honey sweetness itself - rather than water to drink.

Meribah was where, shortly after the Jews has fled Egypt and entered the desert, they lost confidence in God and were convinced that they had been abandoned to die of thirst in the desert. It was there that they challenged Moses "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?" (Ex 17:3), at which point God told Moses to "take in your hand the rod... [and] strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, that the people may drink." (Ex 17:5-6) At Meribah, God gave them water to drink, which was enough to sustain life. When Jews turn to Him with their whole hearts, He will give them honey sweetness itself - rather than water to drink.

Around the year 1750, Our Lady appeared at the bottom of an abyss and the Andes Mountain Range, 2,600 meters high in today’s Colombian territory. It is not uncommon for the Virgin to manifest in beautiful places, but in Las Lajas, the chosen site was in front of a 80 meter waterfall. The photographs only give us a pale idea of it. The Gothic style church is considered one of the architectural wonders of the world, and according to the testimonials that line the walkway to the church, Las Lajas is rich in miraculous cures! But the most miraculous of all is a portrait of Our Lady and child, along with St Francis and St Dominic, which appears to be painted on the rock.
Historians and Germans geologists bored core samples through various parts of the image. The rock is perfectly colored to a depth of several feet. The picture penetrates into the rock miraculously. Despite meticulous inspections, no brush strokes are visible. There is no paint, no dye, nor any other pigment on the surface of the rock. It is mysteriously and miraculously imprinted. The colors are the colors of the rock itself. Never has nature reproduced human faces with such perfection. No one has ever come up with an explanation for such a phenomenal image and its many tremendous miracles.
Even though it’s one of the smallest seeds, the trees can grow up to 20' tall and 20' wide. The tree can grow in arid, dry climates and thrive in all kinds of soil. So we can see the mustard seed as a symbol of our faith that can be tested in “dry times” and the most difficult of circumstances. Even if the tree is cut down to the trunk, it can grow back again, so in this show, Anne Trufant teaches us that mustard seed faith is that even during times of “pruning” we can overcome and come back stronger than ever just like the mustard tree that’s been severly pruned if only a little bit of faith remains. Around the year 1750, Our Lady appeared at the bottom of an abyss and the Andes Mountain Range, 2,600 meters high in today’s Colombian territory. It is not uncommon for the Virgin to manifest in beautiful places, but in Las Lajas, the chosen site was in front of a 80 meter waterfall. The photographs only give us a pale idea of it. The Gothic style church is considered one of the architectural wonders of the world, and according to the testimonials that line the walkway to the church, Las Lajas is rich in miraculous cures! But the most miraculous of all is a portrait of Our Lady and child, along with St Francis and St Dominic, which appears to be painted on the rock.
Historians and Germans geologists bored core samples through various parts of the image. The rock is perfectly colored to a depth of several feet. The picture penetrates into the rock miraculously. Despite meticulous inspections, no brush strokes are visible. There is no paint, no dye, nor any other pigment on the surface of the rock. It is mysteriously and miraculously imprinted. The colors are the colors of the rock itself. Never has nature reproduced human faces with such perfection. No one has ever come up with an explanation for such a phenomenal image and its many tremendous miracles.

So we can see the mustard seed as a symbol of our faith that can be tested in “dry times” and the most difficult of circumstances. Even if the tree is cut down to the trunk, it can grow back again.
