Author Nikolas Schreck (The Manson File) joins S.T. Patrick for the third time to discuss Charles Manson and the Tate-Labianca murders of August 1969. This year was the 50-year anniversary of the murders and Schreck hosted a sold-out talk in Los Angeles in August. In this episode, Patrick asks Schreck about the history of his communication with author Tom O’Neill, his perspective on O’Neill’s book Chaos (including its breakthroughs and faults), the media and Manson (50 years later), the wide-scale dissection of Vincent Bugliosi and the farce known as the Helter Skelter narrative, Schreck’s thoughts on Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (and what Schreck believes was hidden within), and the continuous public interest in the case. Author and director Nikolas Schreck joined S.T. Patrick to discuss the life and legacy of Charles Manson and the former members of his commune. Schreck discusses the update to his mammoth book, The Manson File: Myth and Reality of an Outlaw Shaman. He also addresses the bizarre fight over Manson’s remains and estate, as well as how trash TV producers used the funeral for a documentary. When discussing his legacy, Schreck and Patrick talk about how Reagan-era California impacted the story and how it was used by the GOP. A prolific writer and lecturer, and frequent guest on television, Holzer served for six years (2010–2016) as Chairman of the Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation. For the previous 10 years he co-chaired the U. S. Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (ALBC), appointed by President Clinton. President Bush awarded Holzer the National Humanities Medal in 2008. And in 2013, Holzer wrote an essay on Lincoln for the official program at the re-inauguration of President Obama. He is now co-chairman of The Lincoln Forum. Holzer has authored, coauthored, or edited 54 books. His newest book is The Presidents vs. The Press: The Endless Battle Between the White House and the Media - From the Founding Fathers to "Fake News." New York University professor Mark Crispin Miller simply asked his students to do research on masking before they believed the narrative of the mainstream media. After all, he was teaching a class called "Mass Persuasion and Propaganda." The very idea of the class is to foster recognition of the tools of persuasion and propaganda that are a daily part of the students' society, culture, and news media. Author, Film Historian, and JFK assassination researcher Joseph McBride joins S.T. Patrick to discuss his newest book, Frankly: Unmasking Frank Capra. The book is about the "Kafkaesque" journey McBride endured in trying to publish a truthful biography of director Frank Capra (1992's Frank Capra: The Catastrophe of Success). Its an illustrative story about what it's like to try to do truthful history in a time where Americans still prefer a sterilized patriotic mythology to a more difficult truth. While working on the Capra bio in 1985, McBride also made an interesting discovery about George H.W. Bush. This discovery would lead to 35 pages of McBride's seminal work on the Kennedy assassination, Into the Nightmare, as well as the first chapter of Russ Baker's Family of Secrets. In this episode, McBride tells the story of that discovery and discusses its meaning.
