Miani, Reka and Sarah chat with ex-police officer and paramedic turned full time mum and writer, Fleur Ferris. Fleur's first four YA books - Risk, Black, Wreck and Found, have earned a significant amount of awards and recognition nationwide, including the Davitt Best Young Adult Crime Novel 2016, Davitt Best Debut Crime Book 2016, Australian Family Therapists’ Award for Children’s Literature and Young Australian Best Book Award - or YABBA as they are known - and some of them have also been optioned for film and a play. Esme, Reka and Sarah welcome new team mate Ssanyu from USA and the girls chat with new children's author Rick Foster, who has self-published the picture book 'Why Worry Wally' (illustrated by Jackie Case) to support children in coping with anxiety. For over 25 years Rick Foster forged an award winning career as a successful copywriter - creating compelling stories and messages that connected with people and really moved them. For 20 of those years he was founder and part-owner of Tank, a creative agency that focused on making a meaningful difference through their work. Then came a really challenging time for Rick, as he began to suffer from severe anxiety. This made him review his life in a new way and 3 years ago, Rick and his wife, who was also a partner in the company, decided to sell the business and take time to reflect on ‘what was next’. Whilst this period was the hardest time of his life, it also became the happiest, as it reignited Rick’s passion for writing, through pursuing something that he had really wanted to do since the birth of the first of his two beautiful daughters – write picture books! Rick is now a passionate advocate for mental health, and in December 2019 he self-published his first wonderful children’s book “Why Worry Wally”, which aims to give support and encouragement to children suffering from anxiety.

For Primary Perspectives Reading Matters annual Sydney Writer's Festival Special 2018 Miani and Reka chat with multi-award winning, bestselling YA author Randa Abdel-Fattah, who was born in Sydney, Australia of Palestinian and Egyptian heritage. She grew up in Melbourne and attended a Catholic primary school and Islamic secondary college, obtaining an International Baccalaureate. Randa has had a love affair with books since she was a child, entering short story competitions, writing plays in primary school and she wrote her first short story when she was in sixth grade. Randa completed her first novel at the age of fifteen, which was the preliminary draft of her debut book Does My Head Look Big in This? Harry, Jojo, Miani and Reka speak with Melbourne writer Gabrielle Wang, about her latest title 'The Beast of Hushing Wood'. Jojo was lucky enough to be the first young person in the world to read the book and she loved it!
Gabrielle is a multi award winning, bestselling children’s author and illustrator of books that are a blend of Chinese and Western cultures, with a touch of fantasy. Gabrielle has twice won the Aurealis Award for Best Children’s Long Fiction and her novels have been named Notables in the Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards. Two of her works were Highly Commended in the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards and her first novel, The Garden of Empress Cassia was listed on the USBBY Outstanding International Books Honour List. In fact Gabrielle’s first book The Garden of Empress Cassia won Aurealis Award for Excellence in Speculative Fiction in 2002 and in 2003 it was the Winner of Best Children’s Long Fiction and a notable book in the Children’s Book Council of the Year Awards of that year, as well as being short listed in many Premier’s awards. Gabrielle has now published sixteen children’s novels with Penguin Books Australia as well as a picture book, The Race for the Chinese Zodiac with Walker Books. She is also published internationally in the US, UK, China, South America and Korea and is the author of two of the very popular ‘Our Australian Girl’ series.

Here's a little bit of Jane's bio: Jane has always loved writing and drawing. Throughout much of her childhood she lived in Norfolk and wandered the fields and lanes with pencil and sketchbook.
She studied illustration and design in Brighton, where she met her husband, Ivan, who is also an illustrator. After college, they settled in Sussex and Jane taught art for a few years before leaving to have her first child, Owen. Since then she has had two more children; Alison and Ralph, and has written and illustrated over 20 picture books.
She prepares a dummy book of rough sketches before she begins the finished drawings. For these she draws first in pencil then, using coloured pencils, she builds up layers of colour, adding details towards the end. Each drawing takes many, many hours and a whole book can take a year.
Leah and Miani speak with illustrator Allison Colpoys and author Davina Bell - winners of the 2016 Critchon Award for their book 'The Underwater Fancy Dress Parade'. The Critchon Award recognises and encourages new talent in the field of Australian children’s book illustration and this is the first time Allision and Davina have collaborated together on a children’s book, so it's pretty impressive to have won the Critchon Award!

Both of these books were listed as Notable Books by the CBCA. “Ali the Bold Heart” illustrated by Elise Hurst was released on June 1st 2006 . “Tea and Sugar Christmas” illustrated by Robert Ingpen and published by NLA was released in 2014. “One Step at a Time” illustrated by Sally Heinrich and published by MidnightSun Publishing was released in 2015. Jane works part time as a primary school teacher at Strathalbyn in South Australia and writes in the evenings and on her days off when she has a bit of time to herself!

RohanCleave - Leah and Miani chat with Rohan Cleave, author of Phasmid: Saving the Lord Howe Island Stick Insect, which received the CBCA 2016 Eve Powell Honour Award for Information Books. Rohan is a zookeeper at Melbourne Zoo, where he’s been involved in the Lord Howe Island Stick Insect recovery breeding program since 2003. Rohan now manages the phasmid recovery program at Melbourne Zoo and also somehow managed to find time to write a book about it! 'Phasmid’ is the amazing true story of the Lord Howe Island Phasmid, or Stick Insect, which was believed to be extinct for nearly 80 years, until a small group of phasmids were rediscovered on Balls Pyramid, a volcanic outcrop 23km off the coast of Australia’s Lord Howe Island. News of their unbelievable survival made headlines around the world and ignited an extraordinary conservation effort to save this remarkable invertebrate. Cornelia Funke Biography
The German author, Cornelia Funke was born 1958 in Dorsten, in the German region of Westphalia. Following university, she worked for three years as a social worker in an educational project, working with children from difficult backgrounds. Following a post-graduate course in book illustration at the Hamburg State College of Design, she worked as a designer of board games and as an illustrator of children's books. Disappointment in the way some of the stories were told, combined with her desire to draw fabulous creatures and magical worlds, rather than familiar situations of school and home, she was inspired to write her own stories for young readers.
During her time as a social worker, she had worked with children from deprived backgrounds and discovered the sorts of stories that grasped their imaginations. These were the stories she wanted to write – ones that would appeal to bookish children and to inspire those children who hadn't had yet had positive reading experiences.
As a reader, Cornelia has always loved good fantasy, particularly British fantasy authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, C. S. Lewis Chronicles of Narnia, and J. M Barrie's Peter Pan. Cornelia Funke's own success is now international, demonstrating the universal appeal – and power – of her storytelling.
Cornelia Funke researches for each novel meticulously. For example, before writing Inkheart, she researched about booksellers, book collectors, book thieves and even book murderers as well as reading about martens and fire eaters. She then imagined the characters and the places they might go, writes down plot lines for the first 20 chapters. Then, and only then - after about six months – she writes the first sentence. A major novel will take her about a year to write. She always does her own sketches – in pen and ink (her grandfather was a famous etcher), she creates a picture of her own characters to help her write about them.
She married printer Rolf Funke in 1981. They have two children, Anna (b. 1989) and Ben (b. 1994). Up until 2005 the Funke family lived in Hamburg, Germany, when they moved to Los Angeles. Sadly, in March 2006, Rolf died of cancer.
