Live Planted- Practical Vegan Living: Recent Episodes

Alyssa

Live Planted is a weekly Podcast about living a practical vegan lifestyle. Alyssa, the show's host, is a Midwestern girl who felt the need to create a space based on living a plant based life in the easiest way possible. The show goes into health, wellness, activism, environmentalism, cruelty free practices, sustainability, animal rights, and how to make it all work while living a 'regular' life.

Live Planted aims to inspire and educate listeners by letting you in on a little secret: I don't have it all figured out either, but here are some things I've learned along the way. During the show I talk with awesome guests, like former Mtv VJ Lauren Toyota, Cara Livermore of Chickpea Magazine, and Hannah Howlett of 'High Carb Hannah' Youtube fame. The show has hosted vegan artists, tiny house builders, bakers, professional vegan athletes, plant based recipe creators, movie directors, health coaches, dads, and many more.

Part of the show is spent breaking down topics like 'soy: good or bad?', 'the realities of fish’, or 'how to travel while vegan'. There'll be ways to go vegan at your own pace, and ways to stay vegan for the long term. Join me in this pursuit to connect with like minded people. You can find the full show notes and more at LivePlanted.com.

We're having a BABY! A vegan baby that is and this pregnancy is the 'big project' I've been teasing. I'm beyond excited to share where I've been these past few weeks, how I faired the 1st trimester, our family's feelings about birthing and raising vegan babies, and so much more. Answering your questions about cloth diapering, vegan prenatals, and criticism.

Ps. While away we surpassed 1 million downloads of Live Planted. Whoa! Thanks to everyone who's listened, passed the show on, and been a part of LP, I appreciate you!

Kitty Cotten is a vegan mama working to share her life and approach to simple living online. Kitty lives in a 'duel household', meaning she's vegan and her husband is not- something I get asked about frequently. Today we talk about where to start with minimalism and building a more sustainable wardrobe. Plus, positive birthing and minimalist parenting, both have been labeled as nearly 'impossible' but Kitty shows us it's not always as it seems.

The idea of being stretched too thin is oh so common in our current society. Often in a non-traditional lifestyle such as veganism or zero waste we're piling more onto our plate, it takes more work and consciousness to live like this. It's almost a badge of honor to be busy, but how do we slow down, lighten our mental load? Today's episode shares 3 ways to lighten your mental load, so you can ditch the guilt and live a little lighter.

After sharing lots of cooking adventures over on Instagram stories recently (oat milk yogurt anyone?) I've gotten loads of questions about how to start a cooking at home habit. So YES, I'll share my tips for cooking at home more often, my top 5 fav favorite kitchen tools, and of course some practical advice on using your time wisely without spending a whole Sunday cooking.

Brittney Kane founder of Foreverland Farm, an animal sanctuary in Ohio, and I bonded over our 30 something, childless role in society. A society where women, even in 2019, are valued for their reproductive role over everything else. In today's Mother's Day Special we're discussing the female animal body, it's valuable role in animal agriculture and how a seemingly infertile sheep got Foreverland Farm going. We're officially 1 year into the life motto 'Life's Not That Serious', a motto about forgetting perfectionism, being present, and leaving behind those insecurities that aren't serving you. It's a great motto for anyone trying to live sustainably or any lifestyle that isn't 'standard'. I'll spill the raw and honest details on what's changed in the last year for me with this motto and I'm talking about why I quit zero waste the first time I tried it and how LNTS could have helped me. Plus, shoutouts are back! Answering a few listener Q's in today's shoutouts.

Jenny Welbourn of Wear I Live is someone I've been wanting to share with the podcast for a while. She's carved out a unique little section of the internet for herself where she's able to show growth, challenges, and struggles in her life including mental health, veganism, and zero waste. In today's episode, we talk veganism in real life vs. veganism online (there's totally a difference), sustainable fashion & thrifting. Plus, I applaud Jenny for her openness with her lowest mental health point and what helped her resurface again.

There's a weird thing happening on the internet, the word healthy has been redefined into something new, something almost unattainable, something #goals. Today I want to, in true Live Planted form, define healthy in practical, logical, terms and bring it back to reality. Especially as more popular vegans are quitting saying they don't 'feel healthy', this is the perfect time to talk about what healthy really means and how does it fit into your life.

I'd love to hear your thoughts after listening to the episode. How do you define healthy? Tell me over on instagram.

There's been a rise of popular activists and YouTubers quitting veganism recently and I wanted to weigh in with a different opinion than you've heard before. It's hard to slow down in a world where sayings like, 'money doesn't sleep,' 'hustle 24/7,' and 'sleep when I'm dead' are the norm. Today's 'Life's Not That Serious' episode focuses on fighting against the 'hustle everyday' society. We validate stress and call it working hard. But what's the toll of this 'hustle'? It's a statement I've seen a lot over the years, 'it's hard'. It's even one I've said myself, but making a lifestyle change is a lot more than just a challenge, it can be such a joy. It's finally here!! The sustainable period episode I've been wanting to share forever, found it's perfect guest in Polly of Green Indy Blog. As Polly puts it, conversations about menstruation are more than just talking product options, it's about awareness, education, and options. The more we discuss, the more we have language for what's happening, the more we can feel normalized, and educated on what's happening to 50% of the population. The aim of the conversation is to bring awareness to women facing stigmas across the world, as well as share more environmentally friendly product options. PLUS, getting away from the militant idea of what zero waste is and are we justifying the use of plastic with brands like Everlane and Madewell doing 'recycled plastic' clothing lines? Is this a new form of greenwashing going almost undetected in the 'low impact/ zero waste' community? Let's let the conversation flow.

Hawnuh Lee and Maia Welbel of Closed-Loop Cooking are making food waste interesting. I wanted to bring them on because I think what they are doing, putting in the extra effort to reuse scraps, ferment, and spread the word in their community is downright inspiring. Today we're discussing bringing back 'old fashioned' techniques like fermenting and canning, becoming confident in your improvisational skills so you can create less waste and move away from recipes, and a really awesome way Hawnuh brought food waste awareness to her community. Plus, a listener question about how to find enough to eat at a non-vegan holiday party.

Now that we're back from Italy, I wanted to share the experience of traveling around the 'land of meat and cheese' as a vegan. I'm sharing one thing that pleasantly surprised me from Italian culture, one thing that made me appreciate the American culture, and a few tips on how to navigate traveling as a vegan when you don't speak the language. Plus, our first holiday content of the season! Cara Livermore, of Chickpea Magazine, shares her hunting, meat-eating dad's way of accommodating vegans at his Thanksgiving table. I saved this clip from episode 120 so it's fresh in your mind going into the holidays. Enjoy!

Converting to veganism, zero waste, or any other life change can be a big deal. Today I brought back licensed mental health therapist Casey Hill to talk about working through making big shifts in your life. We're sharing coping skills to make changes easier, why being realistic with yourself is so important, and the idea of 'holding space' as a way to work through emotions in the moment. Casey shares her new virtual therapy resource for people who are looking for a community when making a transition to veganism. This episode edges into the LNTS (Life's Not That Serious) style of episodes.

Have you heard about grass fed beef? There's an image of the idyllic cows roaming green grasses that comes to mind and the messaging behind grass fed meat is one of enviromental positivity, but is it true? Today environmental scientist and Harvard Farmed Animal Law & Policy Fellow, Matthew Hayek is on to talk about his new research into the sustainability of grass fed beef. We also touch on the terms sustainable, ethical, and humane- are they marketing or reality? Is lab grown meat sustainable? And the big 'p' word, protein, even comes up in today's pod.

PS. We didn't touch on the cruelty that takes place inside the factory farms, grass fed farms, and any animal raising facility in today's episode. This episode was purely focused on the environmental aspect, more to come about the cruelty aspect in the future & there's plenty of past LP pods that focus on the topic of ethics.

It turns out many people are confused about the connection between self-love and being selfish, so this week I'm discussing the distinction between the two with a 'Life's Not that Serious' spin. Sure, it's fun to imagine a fully sustainable wardrobe, but this week we're talking to someone who's actually been doing it for years. Ariana of Paris To Go is on the pod sharing her knowledge of sustainable fashion. What is it and why do we need to pay attention to shopping sustainability for clothing? We're talking about why a $10 tee doesn't actually exist, the marketing and quality (or lack thereof) to keep you in the buying cycle, and why it's so expensive. It's official, you guys requested more 'Life's Not That Serious' episodes so I'm delivering. Today, we're talking about distancing ourselves from our goals, when I first heard this it gave me a total lightbulb moment. The concept makes goals more attainable if you're consciously or subconsciously putting distance between you and something you want. Plus, a great article on how you don't owe anyone an interaction, a concept especially valid for vegans or people living a 'different' lifestyle where others have a lot of questions. And how our ability to be kind erodes when we aren't kind to ourselves. If there's something you want to hear discussed on a LNTS episode, let me know over on Instagram.

After mentioning my new life motto, 'Life's Not That Serious', on episode 110, it turns out a lot of you guys resonated with the message too. I wanted to do an update and take questions about the topic of slowing down, realizing you don't need to be perfect, and changing your perspective that 'LNTS' is. "Food is info, food is medicine, food is crucial to our health." Today the author of that quote, plant based cardiologist, Dr. Joel Kahn is on the podcast. Dr. Kahn is sharing what plants have to do with a healthy heart, genetics role in health (is it an excuse or a life sentence?), and why more doctors and hospitals aren't talking about the healing power of plants. Spurred on by a listener question, today we're doing another episode in the 'Necessary or Not' series and tackling the Keto diet. Is animal fat and plant fat the same? Does it behave differently in your body? Are carbs necessary or can you get away with very few as the Keto diet suggests? If someone compares the vegan 'diet' and keto diet I want you to be informed on whats happening behind this trending diet right now. Recently I mentioned on Instagram that there was nothing really 'off topic' when asking questions for the pod and the questions came flooding in. The thing with this podcast is, nothing is really 'off topic' becasue veganism is a lifestyle which affects all areas of your life, your hobbies, your shopping habbits, your ethics, so it's all 'on topic'. I thought I'd take an episode to answer a few of the questions in depth on the pod. One of the most popular questions about veganism is, 'What do you eat?' and 'How do you keep it interesting?' Today I brought in Ariana Schwarz of 'Paris To Go' to help answer that popular inquiry. We're sharing the ease a stocked pantry can bring to your cooking, formulaic eating that keeps things interesting, and making it practical so that you can continue on with this lifestyle. Ariana shares the 4 sauces she swears by to make any meal feel special, and the simple things she prepares on Sunday to make the week smooth. Plus, listener Q's on beauty products with non-CF parent companies, how to buy bulk foods without being charged for the jars, and a vegan cheese MANY listeners suggested.

In celebration of International Women's Day, today we're talking the connection between veganism and feminism. Veganism is so deeply connected to the female body, yet the conversation is rarely had. I didn't connect that so many female animal bodies were being taken advantage of until after I had been vegan a few years. So today, we're having the discussion, sharing 3 ways in which veganism and feminism relate to one another and why you should pay attention to them. Plus, listener Q's on quick and healthy vegan snack suggestions, advice for new vegans eating out, and the debate between creating less waste and staying true to your veganism.

A few years ago there was a huge movement pushing women to stop apologizing. Many think that veganism is a passing fad, a diet with an expiration date. Untrue, says, Dr. Ian McDonald, veganism and vegetarianism have a long history, traced back until the fifteenth century. On today's episode, we're going to explore how the hunter gatherer's expressed remorse over eating animals, mock meats way before the current state of faux meats, Paris' role in laying the groundwork for the modern veg movement, and what the future holds.

Plus, in the first segment, I'll keep you updated on all things McDonald's vegan options. What are they offering? Do I support it? Do you agree with me? As always, let me know over on instagram if you agree.

In the vegan community there's a lot of questions and a LOT of infighting. What do these two have to do with each other? One explanation, Echo Chambers. We're constantly fed information online that matches our very specific beliefs, leading us to believe our beliefs are with the majority whether they are or not. When reality doesn't match our perceived majority beliefs we don't know what to do. Today I'm going to answer your questions on how to talk to others without getting upset, and what we need to remember when talking to people inside and outside the community.

After a moment of inspiration recently I wanted to talk about 'anti perfectionism' on the podcast today. Getting over that guilt of not being enough, not doing enough, and just being happy in the present moment. This episode talks about releasing yourself from that perfectionist thinking and how and why this relates to veganism. If you're not shooting for perfection in being vegan are you able to cheat?1? Being perfect isn't all its cracked up to be.

When it comes to verbalizing ethical veganism, the struggle is real. Why is it hard to talk about sometimes? Who says we're better than animals? Does health still play a role if I'm an ethical vegan? I wanted to share EXACTLY how I feel on the subject and ended up surprising myself by the end of the episode. Can you relate? Plus, I'm sharing a few tips I have on how to make it easier to talk about along the way.

When people think vegan they immediately think only of food. Another often overlooked aspect are the beauty, cosmetics, and house hold cleaners you bring into your home and use on your body daily. I didn't 'get it' for a while after making the food changes myself, so I want to bring you all the information so don't have to waste time like I did.

I'm sharing what really happens in animal testing (it's not just lab rats...), what alternatives are available to animal testing & how reliable they are, what ingredients are hidden in your favorite products (hint: bat poo is most mascaras!!), and what you can do to avoid this cruel reality. Plus I answer the ever popular question of 'should I throw everything away and start over?'

While scrolling facebook I had a rude reminder on how unkind people can be, a new vegan asking about fake meats was shamed and laughed at by over 186 comments. Hear my response to minds inquiring about fake meats and what I would have said to this guy wading into the waters of faux animal products.

Also on this episode I share my best tips for creating the perfect acai bowl. How to get them creamy and dreamy, and how to save a little $$ on the ingredient list. Travel is one of the biggest concerns people have when going vegan. Today we're talking about multiple types of travel with Wendy of Nomadic Vegan. Wendy explains how to communicate with non English speakers, it's an easy trick anyone can literally pull out of their pocket. We talk about navigating trips with non vegan travel partners, and how Italy, famous for its meats and cheeses, is actually much more vegan friendly than you think.

In the first half I share all the details and future plans with my new off grid, stealth, camper van. I'm living the weekend van life, find out how it will effect this podcast. Hear what I have to say about having the first non vegan guest on the show today.

In today's society we expect to have it all, to wake up and love ourselves, to fit everything in and arrive at happiness. This simply isn't possible without effort, practice and a whole lot of patience.

Today Tonya Papanikolov of 'The Well Woman', a yoga teacher, and certified nutritional practitioner, is on the show. We talk about mindfully slowing down, finding balance in today's 'hustle-heavy' world, and why it can be hard to set boundaries for ourselves. Together Amy and Billy started the Cleveland chapter of the Save Movement, the Cleveland Farmed Animal Save. They are two of the kind souls who dedicate their time to expose what the animal agriculture industry doesn't want you to see, working to connect the disconnect between animals in farms and photos and animals on our plates. Recently Amy & Billy came back from bearing witness at Anita Krajnc, of Toronto Pig Save's, final court date. This duo does all of this with love and positivity, citing a strict 'non violent' stance in their work.

In this episode Amy & Billy share their experience with Anita's 'pig trial', how they work to chisel away at the idea that animals are property, and their response to Gary Francione's opinion that save movements aren't helpful to veganism. Plus they give some helpful advice on why a non violent approach can deescalate any situation.

Honestly, I can't believe we're at 50 episodes. When I started this thing I didn't know where it was going, but I knew I had to get my voice out there and spread the 'practical vegan' message. I wanted other people to know that there is not one way to do it. You can be vegan in many different ways, they are all correct!

I am so grateful to all the wonderful people who have come on and shared their knowledge and time. It's unbelievable that we're had people from all over the world on the podcast as well as people listening from all over the world. The whole point of this thing was the spread the practical vegan message and to make vegan friends. I think at episode 50 we can say it's happening! I can't wait to see where we are at episode 100 and 150! Thank you for joining me on this journey, without you we wouldn't be at 50.

After growing up in a meat eating household and never quite feeling right about it Ashley of Crazy Urban Vegan went vegetarian. Once Ashley realized her health woes of ulcers, uterine fibroids, acid reflux, and weight gain, needed some extra attention she decided to go vegan. She relates the switch in herself to an immediate frequency change, a good feeling she says she was instantly addicted to. Since going vegan she has lost 50 lbs, gotten off all medications, cured her ulcers, and reduced her fibroids to almost non existence. The most impressive thing about it all is that she never focused on the weight or the way her body looked, she focused on how she felt and everything else fell into place. Ashley has completely changed her life with veganism, and attributes some of that change to positive thinking. She wasn't naturally a positive thinker, but has changed into someone who practices mindful meditation, yoga, and hosts 24 hour positive thinking challenges on her Instagram.

In this episode Ashley shares her thoughts on how to best transition to veganism (should you go cold turkey or not?), how she switched her thinking from a negative and worried space to a positive and loving mindset, and Ashley talks about something she manifested that is happening in her life now. Plus we talking about how 'choosing happiness' can make the biggest difference in your day.

Once you listen to this episode, try out choosing happiness, tag Ashley and I (@CrazyUrbanVegan & @LivePlanted) and tell us that you're going to #choosehappiness for the day. Lets get this happiness movement going!

In some ways Emilie of Emilie Eats is your typical college student, super busy, fitting in a little bit of everything, making it all work. In other ways she is not. Emilie is 20 years old running a successful vegan recipe blog. She is self aware beyond her years, noting that she has fallen into the perfectionist mindset of trying to eat perfectly 'clean'. Saying that instagram and youtube can put unrealistic body image ideas into your head. This sort of mindfulness that Emilie has, being cognizant of media influenced thinking and knowing when to step away, is inspiring.

In this episode Emilie shares why she thinks veganism & minimalism go hand in hand, we talk about why people have mistaken thoughts about what a vegan body looks like, and Emilie shares her secret to eating vegan with a busy schedule.

For this episode my husband Eric joins the conversation. Since we're all just voyeurs at heart, wanting to know what other people are doing, I thought I would fill you in on how we do the holidays. I didn't want to give a bunch of tips- do this, don't do that, because I already have ep28 for that. I wanted to tell you what we really do for the holiday season. We've been vegan for 4 years, we're working on our minimalism, and I'm an introvert, so we've got a lot going on.

In this episode you'll get the low down on how we do gifting, parties, food, travel, and alone time. Hear about Eric's theory on baking if you're an unconfident baker, what our minimalist alternative to gift giving is (hint we're still participating), and the famous sugar cookie mystery. It was a really fun episode to make so I hope you enjoy it and get some ideas for your holiday out of it.

One of the biggest myths about going vegan is that it's expensive. Well, it is simply not true. Compare the cheapest cuts of meat, such as ground round, on average it's $3 a pound and up. In contrast, dried beans cost on average $1 per pound. Rice and potatoes are both less than $1 per pound. A 10lb bag of potatoes costs $1.99 total at my grocery store, that equals 19 cents a pound. Even if you're a vegan who buys more convenient, pre-packaged goods you can still save money compared to someone who loads up on the animal goods.

In this conversation we're only talking money, we're not adding in the extra factors like health care costs, irreversible environmental strains, as well as the lives of millions of animals. No matter the monetary savings, each year a vegan saves more than 100 lives. If you're still debating on going vegan because of cost, know that you can do it on a budget big or small.

In this episode you'll find 4 main ways to save, including practices to put into place that help you save big. The more you practice something the more it becomes a habit, before you know it you'll be saving money all over the place. Lets continue the conversation on Twitter, if you have a money saving tip tweet it to me @LivePlanted.

Recently I went to a speech Erin was giving on veganism. One of the slides was on Paleo and it really got me thinking about the cross section between Veganism and Paleo. A lot of people qualify them both as 'fad diets' and see them as a temporary way to loose weight/become healthier/ etc. The truth is veganism is not a fad, it's a lifestyle, a whole mind set and has science behind it to prove that it not only helps your body, but also the earth and (most importantly) the animals. If vegamism is not a fad, then what is Paleo?

I wanted to get to the nitty gritty of Paleo today-what is it? What is the true information on the health aspect? In this episode we break down the 'anti-nutrient' foods that Paleo restricts, why people loose weight, why people feel better, and the truth behind what Paleo does to your body and the earth.

In this episode we discuss what advice Caitlin would give to plant interested college students, why food doesn't have to be beautiful all the time, how it was growing up as a vegan/vegetarian, and why morning routines are important.

GIVEAWAY Caitlin has partnered with Live Planted on a giveaway of her smoothie ebook, 'Super Smoothies'. One lucky winner will win a digital copy of 'Super Smoothies'. To enter follow @liveplanted on instagram, then leave a comment telling us what is your favorite thing to add to your smoothies. For a bonus entry you can tag a friend in the comments. (Winner chosen at random. Deadline to enter is Friday October 14th.)

Monique Koch of Brown Vegan is a unique type of person, when going vegan in 2010 she couldn't find resources to help families navigate their way in a plant based world. She didn't give up, she persevered finding her way through budgets, grocery shopping, and picky eaters. After feeling like she had it down pat, Monique then created the resources she was once looking for, for other families.

In this episode we discuss Monique's 'Down to Earth' approach to veganism, how to stay on a budget, tips for parents with picky eaters, and whether or not she discussed the realities of cruelty with her kids. Monique is a real gem, she has so much information to share and shes really enthusiastic to share it. Whether you have a family pre/post transition, or you're solo on this journey, you will definitely find yourself learning something from this episode.

This week we welcome Eric, Alyssa's practical vegan husband, to the show. Hear the story on why Eric is actually the original vegan here and what pushed him to make the change 4 years ago. He's coming to the show to bring us the most recent vegan news, plus a new vegan documentary alert.

In the first half hear some of my tips on the best vegan cookbooks; what ones to gift to non-vegans and new vegans alike, what book helped most in the beginning of my vegan path, and more. I break down how to be a versatile cook, how to keep yourself from 'cheating' and going back to animal products, and what my motto is when it comes to cooking. Its not about being a chef, its about being a cook, learning what you like and how to make it well.

Are there any cookbooks you can't live without? Leave us a comment with your suggestions.

First we talk about how to not fall for the vegan hype... don't believe people when you hear "you'll NEVER get a cold" as a vegan or "you will lose a ton of weight!" while some things may be true for some people, we don't want folks to get discouraged if they don't see x,y,z outcome. We were so excited to talk to Mark Devries, Producer and Director of Speciesism, The Movie (2013). We talk to him about the everyday pain farmed animals feel, if he wishes he could re-enter the Matrix, when and how to make the comparison to slavery and the holocaust, and much more. We get deep on this episode talking about the philosophical and psychological implications of going vegan.

Before talking to Mark, Sarah reads an article, My first day at the slaughterhouse (http://www.veganaustralia.org.au/my_first_day_at_work_at_the_slaughterhouse). A little parental advisory: It's a descriptive piece from a meat eater who took a job at a humane slaughterhouse and went vegan overnight. She gives some squeamish details, but it's worth listening to and feeling... as it's reality.
