Can we be empowered through adversity? Each week, join Pamela Smith, licensed professional therapist & advocate for the mental health and well-being of black and brown females, as she interviews professionals from all walks of life who have overcome tremendous adversity and succeeded in the midst of struggle. Tune into these powerful conversations that explore why it’s all mental.
Have you ever wondered why the person you want to have a relationship with isn’t ready, or doesn’t seem to be on the same page as you? We want other people to be ready to make changes at the same time that we are ready. But that is rarely the case, and we can’t make someone else ready for change.
We have to ask the hard question of, are we making someone else a priority over ourselves. Because we have our own traumas, our own experiences, and our own things that we have to work through and we have to work through those and find joy for ourselves. We can’t expect other people to fill that void and we can’t expect others to be seeking out the same things at the same time as us.
Finding joy should be a priority, and if someone or something is distracting from that, we have to examine why we are allowing that person or thing to distract us from the joy we deserve.

We are coming to you today to talk about pursuing your dreams. I have been talking to a variety of people over the last couple of weeks and have heard a common theme. They are in a career but do not feel like they are pursuing their passion. Have you ever felt that way? You deeply want to pursue a certain path but feel like you have invested so much time in something else?
I want to challenge you today to take a look at your life and be honest with yourself, what is truly your passion? What would you choose to do as a career if there were no barriers? In this episode, I share with you a simple practice that will help you take small steps to make your dream a reality.
Life's too short to work our entire lives and be unhappy. Even if you are just pursuing your passion as a hobby, you might be surprised how implementing just a little of what you love into your day can help your mental health and even slowly move you towards a career you are in love with.

Do you sometimes feel ashamed when talking about your own mental health? Do you worry what other people will think and does this fear keep you back sometimes from pursuing the support that you need?
Today I wanted to share how proud I am of Naomi Osaka for standing up for her own mental health. She is very much in the public eye but still took a stand (at her own expense) to talk about her own mental health journey.
I applaud her thousand times over. I hope this act of courage did not go over your head but you were able to see that it is okay to stand up for yourself. I also hope it encourages you to see mental health as a part of your overall health and that it is okay to talk to someone.
There are so many options available for therapy. If you need any kind of support or direction on where to find the right therapist for you please use the links below to connect with us- we are here to support you!

Have you ever wanted to pursue something but were unsure if it was the right time, or if you had what it took? How many times do we allow fear to keep us from going to the next level?
Today we are going to talk about doing it scared. I have been on a journey the past several months challenging myself to do things that scare me. I have been using the hashtag #TeamDoItScared on social media and decided to look and see if that name had been established online...it has not.
I knew this was an invitation for me to step into this space and create a community around those who are wanting to level up in their life and relationships by doing the things that they have been avoiding. Want to join us? Ready to go on a journey with others who will do it scared?

Being sick is never any fun, it’s miserable. When you add onto being sick the fact of being single and not having anyone there to help take care of you it can be even harder to get through. It’s important to realize that when we feel sick we will feel down mentally, and that’s a normal thing.
During those times it’s very important for us to reach out for help. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness and often it can be extremely important not just for our physical health, but our mental health as well. In addition when we are sick we don’t know if things may take a turn for the worse, and if they do it is crucial we have someone available that we have reached out to who knows what we are going through.
Talking through or writing down your mental thoughts during this time can be especially beneficial as it helps us process through the loneliness and emotions that we go through during these times.

We are coming to you today to talk about a character trait called “Highly Sensitive Person” (or HSP). The word “sensitive” is not negative, it simply means someone who is highly attuned. It means that your emotions run deep.
The other part of HSP is that the person’s body (or nervous system) becomes a little more attuned as well-meaning you become sensitive to your surroundings, like fabrics or the light or temperature in a room.
I wanted to give this brief explanation because this personality is more prevalent than you may think, and is common within the black community. So if you feel misunderstood sometimes, or feel like there is something wrong with you, I wanted to take the time to assure you that you are not.
As a fellow HSP and a trained clinician trained specifically in Highly Sensitive People, I can help you navigate through the unique way you move through the world. I understand that it can feel like you are a square peg in a round hole- but the personality you have is okay. How do you position yourself as an expert in your work? Imposter syndrome can catch hold of us and keep us second-guessing whether we have the knowledge and skills for the job we are in or are trying to get into.
In today’s episode, I sit down with Ashley Asshire who empowers women towards taking meaningful action in life and career. She sits down and talks about how to leverage our imposter syndrome to our advantage. She explains that when we experience those self-doubts, they are actually red flags for us to take a step back and evaluate whether we are at the right place that aligns with our skillset.
She encourages us to evaluate our environment and not just go with the flow or do things the way we’ve always done them. Ashley talks about how we need to breathe life into our work and what we are skilled at accomplishing.

Have you ever been in a relationship where you see warning signs but don’t act on them? For instance maybe you see jealousy, anger, or disrespect. Sometimes we can push those things off and tell ourselves that we can change them, or they were just having a bad day. But we have to realize that when people show us those glimpses of who we are, we have to take them at face value and believe them. No one has constant bad days, and we need to recognize that these are reoccurring tendencies and cut ties.
Often we will work really hard to put up with a lot of things in a relationship, especially early on because we want to make things work. But decide to choose yourself first, and to get rid of relationships that do not serve you. In the end you will be glad you did. When you first remove people from your life, it may hurt and it may be painful, but remember that by keeping them in your life you are doing yourself a disservice. Ask yourself if the other person is giving you love, grace, and respect in return, and if they are not, then accept it and cut ties.

We are still fighting against the pandemic, social injustices and the “new normal”, life can be extremely stressful right now. So what do we do when we begin to get overwhelmed emotionally? We have to take a step back and recharge ourselves. There are several ways to do this. From shutting down our electronics for a few hours or a day to refocus and bring our normalcy back.
Other ways we can recharge our batteries are taking power naps that are limited to twenty minutes or less. Another great way to focus on resetting our minds is taking a staycation or going out for the day and doing something we enjoy. This needs to be scheduled in and we need to place priority on it, otherwise we won’t do it. You shouldn’t feel guilty for doing this, as it can sometimes be crucial for our mental well-being.

Have you ever felt that you were taking on the responsibility of someone else’s wrong? This could be from a partner, a friend, or a coworker. It is easy to feel like it is our fault. Sometimes this is because the other person is gas lighting us or making us feel guilty ourselves, or sometimes the other person is outright pointing the blame on us. But regardless of why we are shouldering this weight that is not ours to carry, we have to examine why we are accepting this responsibility.
Sometimes we have to step back and take a look at what is going on. Where is our mindset at? Are we walking in confidence and are we sure we are in the right? If so then we need to have a shift in our thinking which will result in a change in our words and actions. We should not accept blame for something that we did not have a part in. Sometimes others can pressure us into circumstances that are false.
The only thing you should be taking accountability for is your own actions, thoughts, and words. How are you responding to situations, how are you reacting, or not reacting? Be authentic with yourself and have a hard but necessary conversation with yourself to determine where you are at.

Have you ever struggled to communicate? Maybe it was with a loved one, a friend, or a work partner. One of the biggest problems I see is difficulty in communication. This starts in childhood. Boys typically are told to shake it off and ignore pain if they get hurt. This teaches boys from a young age to stop their emotional growth, which they then carry into their adulthood.
It is so important to understand that we need to be vulnerable. It is okay to admit that we don’t know how to be vulnerable. Vulnerability allows us to feel, and understand the emotions inside of us, rather than ignoring them. It is important so that we can talk to one another in a positive way and to be able to have confrontation in a healthy manner.
Being sensitive is not a bad thing. We have to get rid of the stigmatism that comes with allowing ourselves to feel and be emotional beings. Mental health is a part of who we are and we have to start taking it seriously and accepting the importance of it.

Do you feel like it’s almost impossible to find that “one” to spend your life with? It can be overwhelming in this day and age and the pandemic is not helping things either. Whether you are in the dating game or looking to get into it, it’s oftentimes an overwhelming place.
In this episode, I sit down with Kiaundra Jackson who specializes in relationship therapy. We discuss setting clear standards from the get-go in a relationship and how to spot red flags and not sugar coat them. We also discuss the things that truly matter in a relationship and how to get past the shallow things that in the long run do not matter.
We talk about knowing who you are and knowing what season you are in and what specifically you are looking for in a relationship. Approaching it with this knowledge is so helpful to then determine whether you should even entertain someone. On the flip side of that, we talk about how often there are people we can easily discount for small reasons but who maybe we need to not shut the door on them.

Mental health in the sports industry, specifically for female athletes leaves much to be desired. It is no wonder when we evaluate the disparity between males and females in this industry. For example, girls in high-school are twice as likely to drop out of sports by the age of fourteen. This number increases as you go through high-school, and also increases in both rural and urban areas.
In addition, women’s sports get less than four percent of media coverage. When it comes to pay, both collegiate and professional women athletes receive 15 - 100% less pay than their male counterparts. Not surprisingly, nearly 50% of female athletes suffer from depression and/or anxiety. It’s no wonder when we look at the disparity in this world of sports.
We have to address the unfair compensation of women compared to men and we have to look at the psychological and mental effects this is causing in women athletes and mitigate the stigma that surrounds mental health, especially in the athletic world.

In this episode, I want to talk about how we celebrate ourselves. We are very good at celebrating and supporting others but what do we do for ourselves? March is women’s month so this is a great time to talk about pampering ourselves, something we often put on the back burner and ignore as we take care of those around us. But what do you do to take care of yourself?
I really want to challenge you to place yourself as a priority and carve out some time for yourself. Whether this is a staycation, sitting down with a book that you’ve been meaning to read for a while, or having a spa day. Regardless of what you do, you need to make time for yourself.
Stress can really affect us, whether it’s from the pandemic, or whether you were affected by the extreme cold weather, or maybe just the day-to-day of taking care of your family, career, etc. So I really want to challenge you to celebrate yourself once a month. It doesn’t have to be something fancy, but just carve out some time to treat yourself and show yourself that you matter.

In today’s episode, I dive into how we handle life when we are burned out and how we can show up. I want to touch on three points. The first being your mental health. Maybe you feel off-kilter, maybe you are just struggling with feeling "all there". The second topic is your physical health. Whether it’s something chronic, or you are having joint issues or just not feeling yourself. We can sometimes put stress on ourselves that we still have to just push through it.
The third thing I dive into is your business health, whether you are going to work in the workplace or running your own business how do you find enough to give when you are drained and feel like you have nothing left to give?
These are hard questions that we often have to deal with. Even if they are not everyday issues we still all struggle with these “down” days. We have to recognize that we are feeling this way and not put pressure on ourselves to over-perform but to take into account both our physical and mental health because it is so important for our overall well-being.

In today’s episode I sit down with Melvin Childs and we talk about handling anxiety and stress in the workplace. We discuss his high stress work environment as a producer and how he calms his anxiety. Sometimes it’s important for us to take alone time and recharge both mentally and physically. With the phone ringing and the emails that pile up it can be difficult to disconnect and taking that time for yourself is vital so that you have things to give and offer to others.
It’s important to set boundaries to really protect our mental space. We discuss how to do that while still being kind and not just ignoring the feelings of others. But we have to recognize that the boundaries have to be there so that we can give more of ourselves to others.
We dive into how both race and sex play a role in getting into film-making in the current industry. We also delve into how differently our culture can be represented by those that are in it rather than our white counterparts who think they understand how we think.

In today’s episode, I wanted to talk about how your physical and mental health are connected. Our energy levels, how we handle news we receive, and how we process all the things that come at us, are all directly connected to both our physical and mental health.
Now I’m not saying that we have to force fake happiness and pretend that everything is great. But what we can do is have a positive outlook even though we don’t know what the future holds. There is much scientific evidence that backs up how your mindset affects the physical. This is because our physical and mental health is so tightly connected.
We all go through really hard times, and we shouldn’t pretend otherwise, but we can still work on a positive outlook during these trying times because it will help to brighten our mood, as well as help, make us feel better.

With national kindness week coming up from February 14-20, I would love to challenge you to a kindness challenge. I want to encourage you to do random acts of kindness for yourself. That may sound selfish, but in reality, we are so hard on ourselves, and beat ourselves up so much, that we need to practice being kind to ourselves.
You can do this with either planned acts of kindness, or doing some spontaneous and spur of the moment things. A harsh trigger word, walking past a mirror, or feeling inadequate about our looks can often send us spiraling into negative thoughts and bring about a negative outlook on ourselves. So that’s why I feel it’s so important that we take the time to be intentional with being kind to ourselves. Because we are worth it.

When it comes to respecting our children, many of us grew up thinking that our kids have to earn our respect and that we can’t “just give them” respect. But why do we think this way?
Our children have feelings just as we do and are often even more sensitive. We need to make sure we are really looking at our children and asking ourselves what we know about them. We need to listen to them, we need to see them, and we need to really hear them.
We can easily say “Oh, I heard what my child said”. But did we hear the subtext? Did we try to understand what they are feeling? Did we try to hear where they are coming from?
Today we dig into the importance of spending one-on-one time with our kids, how we can practice active listening, and showing them respect as human beings. These small gestures matter, shows them that we care, and allows us insight into their lives.

We are living in very emotionally charged times right now. In order to “unload” it is important for us to reach out to a therapist to discuss the mental and emotional issues at hand. Equally important is finding a mental health professional that looks like you and is culturally competent to be able to really work through these times together.
There is still so much hate in the world. The hate is felt by us and not only do we have to deal with it on our own but if we have children we have to have conversations with them about these issues and work through it with them.
All of this combined can exert so much stress on us, which is why I can’t encourage you enough to process through all of the things going on in our society with a mental health professional who also understands these emotions and feelings.

The mental and emotional effects of our current events can be overwhelming. We have to still get through our day to day despite the political and racial climate. So how can we still deal with everything going on while at the same time, keep making progress and moving forward?
One thing that helps us to work through our feelings is to self reflect and do a deep dive into ourselves. We need to ask ourselves hard questions about what we are feeling and why so that we can better understand ourselves. Deep diving can be a very uncomfortable process and we may find we have resistance towards it.
It is so important as we deep dive to notice triggers, repeating patterns, or other feelings that may be buried within us. We cannot deal with what we are going through until we acknowledge exactly how we are feeling. I encourage you that if you are struggling with the current situation to contact a licensed therapist that you trust, who can lead you through some of these thought processes.

When it comes to choosing the correct mate we often don’t put in the work to see the person for who they truly are, and instead, look through rose-colored glasses. We can sometimes choose to ignore red flags or things that concern us, or we think that the red flags will go away after we get married or that we can change them. But these are dangerous assumptions to make and get us in trouble later on.
We all have experienced some level of trauma, from moderate to severe, and that trauma can cause us to operate from a place of denial. When we do this we make situations sound better than they are and deny what is truly going on. We have to remember that potential mates will show up as a representative of themselves and only show the best parts. This is why it’s important to really look closely and objectively when evaluating someone as a possible mate.
Finally, we wrap up today’s episode with putting yourself first, and why it is so vital that you make yourself a priority. It is easy to feel guilty for doing this, but there are many reasons why we need to stop and ask ourselves what we want, and what we need.

Do you feel like you can put yourself first? Make decisions that feel authentic and right for you? It is easy to get caught up in what others think we should do, or what others expect of us, and end up crippled when it is time to make big decisions.
But when we choose ourselves first, we then begin to better not only ourselves but our relationships. We increase our self-worth and stop feeling that we have to behave in a certain way in order to please the other people in our lives. This allows us to be able to give more to our relationships because we are coming from a place of fullness, rather than pouring out what little we have left.
Sometimes we can be faced with very hard decisions when it comes to serving others, but be okay with choosing ourselves first, and setting a firm boundary. This will bring an immense feeling of freedom, where you don’t have to be plagued by shame, but rather walk confidently knowing you did what was right for you.

When you think of your “mental health” do you think about your actual brain? Today’s guest, America’s #1 Brain Psychologist says that you should. There is much more that encompasses our mental health than we think and she is here to tell us about the importance of the brain in our mental health journey.
Dr. Catherine Jackson uses a holistic approach when serving her patients and believes that we should look at our health from an individualistic standpoint. She says that although we are not taught to consider the brain when thinking about our emotions, we are holistic beings and the way she approaches therapy is one of many ways that we need to be educated on.
Today we dig into the development of the brain, the importance of learning life-skills at an early age, why we need to express our emotions in order to heal, and the power of our words on our psyche. This is a must list interview for anyone who is looking to level up their mental, emotional, and even psychical health, because like Dr. Catherine says, “You cannot separate mental health from overall health.”

It is so important for us to express and show gratitude, and we can do that not just by showing it to other people, but also towards possessions, and material things we are grateful for. It has been a very difficult year and now more than ever it’s important to express gratitude.
In this episode, I talk about the importance of showing gratitude towards the simple things that we often take for granted. In addition, I talk you through how to avoid making resolutions this next year and instead focus on goal setting, and why goals are much better for us.

64 - Allowing Ourselves to Heal
When it comes to healing and taking time to take care of ourselves, we often roll over ourselves. We sometimes put on the brave face and stick to our resilience rather than admitting we need to allow ourselves time to be human and heal.
In this episode, I talk about how we have to be aware of ourselves when we have bad days or when we are disappointed in ourselves. We can be strong, but we still bleed, we still hurt, and we have to show ourselves kindness. We deserve to be kind to ourselves, and we need to be kind because often we are the only ones that show us kindness.

This year has already been very up and down and now going into the holiday season, it can be even tougher on us mentally. How do we stay connected when we have to stay apart? Today we are digging into creative ways to stay connected to our family and loved ones.
It’s more important than ever to make sure we are staying close to people that are important to us, and whether that is through skype, zoom, or some other digital method, we have to stay creative and stay in touch with. It matters to your mental health.

In this episode, I sit down with Monique AJ Smith and talk about how she is highlighting women of color in athletics. She is hosting a podcast and launching a magazine to pave the way for younger women and give them amazing examples to look up to. We discuss how the gatekeepers are gone and we can take control over our own lives.
We discuss how you have to know who you are and what your passion is in order to fully step into your purpose. Often when we take a job we only look at the money and how much we would make rather than asking ourselves: “Is this something that will bring peace and happiness?”
We talk about the importance of filling ourselves up so that we can then give to others, and that starts with taking care of and understanding who we are.

In today’s episode, I sat down with Stormii Knights and Tamika Archie of NuVysion Media Group to discuss their latest production and why they are passionate about sharing stories that address difficult topics.
“Behind Closed Doors” touches on a myriad of taboo subjects, from domestic violence to human trafficking. We talk about the struggles they faced in putting together a production team from scratch and what it was like filming scenes that re-enacted similar episodes that had happened to them.
In today’s show, we dig into the mental health aspects of retelling these stories and how we can navigate our own self-care as storytellers. We also discuss the difficulty of creating a film that caters to both victims who have lived through abuse, as well as those who have not suffered abuse and for them to be able to relate to the tragedy on screen.

In this episode, we sit down with Priya, who tells us what it is like to work in the gaming industry as well as in the heart of silicon valley as a woman from Pakistan. We talk about what it was like for her to transition from her home country of Pakistan to college in England, and then to the heart of tech in the United States.
Priya is a strong believer in women standing up and using their voice without fear of reprimand or being told to be quiet. She also shares with us personal stories of when she has been both appreciated for her honest and forthright speech to her superiors as well as when she has been criticized for it and how to deal with both.
Priya above all else strives to make the workplace an even playing field for women of all colors by empowering them and starting groups in companies that allow more interaction and growth between women.

Choosing the right doctor, physician, or therapist can already be a challenging endeavor. But we need to be even more vigilant when making our choice. Often we are diagnosed differently than someone, not of color, and many doctors do not take that into account.
We have to be educated going in to see our doctor as well as ask the right questions so that we can ensure what we are being diagnosed with is not just a general blanket term, but that they are evaluating us individually and know what they are talking about.

As single moms, we typically have three things we want. A man, money, and me time. So how do we navigate those things as a single mom? Is it possible to still achieve our goals and live life to the fullest? In this episode, I sit down with Kaywanda Lamb and discuss how as a single mother you can still take charge of your life and live your dreams out.
We deep dive into how we are faced with tough decisions and often we have to evaluate whether it’s time to move into a new space or if we need to learn something new at the current place we are in. We are often tested but by keeping our eye on the goals, and making sure to look deep within we can get through anything.
We also talk about how you don’t have to wait to start making changes and advancements in your life until after your kids are grown and how it is still possible to live boldly in life with kids.

Accepting therapy is a process, especially when you grow up with stigma surrounding mental illness. In this episode I sit down with Caroline Gomez. We take a deep dive into her story of moving to the states from Puerto Rico and what that process looked like for her. We talk about how she had to hold onto her roots, and her culture in order to keep it alive and powerful.
She also shares with us her own journey towards counseling and how culturally any kind of mental illness is very much swept under the carpet and the belief of just toughing it out is very prevalent, but how some of those barriers are beginning to come down in this generation.
We also dive into how to respect ourselves and take time to love ourselves because oftentimes we are the only ones who will. Also how do we express that love to others, and allow others to deal with what they are going through and support them in that?

Oftentimes we are very hard on ourselves. We think we have to perform a certain way, that we have to live up to expectations of others, that we have to be available whenever someone needs us, that we have to give and never take. But in reality that is not a healthy way to live.
In this episode I talk with you about how it is okay to focus on you, it’s okay to ignore the phone call or take the day off because sometimes we need that time to unplug and not have anyone relying on us. We have to be kind to ourselves because often we are the only ones that are.
So take a load off, unplug, destress, and take some time for you, because you are worth it, and your time and energy must be protected so that you can be the best you.

Negative ions are the opposite of positive ions. Negative ions have a positive effect on your body, where positive ions aren't so kind to your body, Crazy right? Peaceful places such as the ocean, or a stream in the midst of a forest are prime places that emit negative ions. These negative ions are then inhaled and enter our bloodstream, which can have positive effects on our moods.
Not only this but it also affects our inner clock, our circadian rhythm. This is important to understand because often we walk through life ignoring the things around us, denying ourselves of things that positively affect us. It is important to be aware and pay closer attention to these negative ions because they provide such healthy benefits.
Often we associate feeling good when we are at the beach or camping as just that, enjoying ourselves, but we don’t realize that negative ions are at work in our body as we embrace the outdoor environment we are in.

Often trauma that we have experienced in the past can lay quiet for quite some time, and then it builds up over time until it spills out and wrecks our lives. It does this by lowering our self-esteem, causing us to have low boundaries, distrust, failed relationships, and more. It can even make us believe that receiving abuse is normal.
But it is so important to realize that it is not normal. We have to work through the past trauma with someone who can help us realize that what has maybe been our normal, is not normal and why we need to change our outlook on abuse and trauma in order to rise above it.
Even if you think that you don’t have any trauma, there may still be underlying things that you have forgotten about. In addition, sometimes we think the trauma has not affected us, and we are doing fine, but trauma will always come out in some way, maybe not today, but it will come out if not dealt with.

Spiritual trauma is trauma that ensued while attending a religious function or anywhere you get fed spiritually. Trauma that comes from these places usually stems from abuse, and often abuse of power. As a result, it can destroy your relationship not just with the people there at the facility, but with your relationship with your higher power. It can cause you to question yourself and whether you did something wrong, and even push you away from your faith.
Spiritual trauma sadly takes place far too often within the confines of spiritual places. It is very important to not self-blame during these times but to seek out help from a third not-partisan party to help you through this time. But don’t hold it inside and allow it to cause you to doubt your faith or who you are. Seek out help from someone outside your facility and get help.
It can be more shaming when the abuse stems from this place that we look to for guidance and that we trust, but it is far more common than you think and you are not alone.

Imposter syndrome is when we know what we are doing, but doubt creeps in and tries to tell us that we are inadequate to do the task. Often it comes in as nervousness, anxiety, and fear. It can be crippling if we allow it because it can keep us from asking.
The thing is, we have to take a step back and evaluate, realizing that we are fully capable, that we have prepared for the task at hand, and have the necessary skills and training in order to pursue and go after the thing that is before us.
Often this can be as simple as deep breathing and recenter ourselves. This allows us to realize that often it is just our nerves that are firing up, which can be a good thing, as it can keep us on our toes, and helps us do the best we can.

While postpartum depression is often talked about and discussed, prenatal anxiety and depression is often ignored and not talked about altogether, but it can be just as real as postpartum. Some of the warning signs to look for include difficulty concentrating, loss of interest in things, feelings of worthlessness and more. These feelings are serious things that can affect us in very negative ways so it is important for us to understand.
The main thing to remember is that feeling any of these depressive thoughts, doesn’t mean there is something wrong or that you are bad for not loving the experience of having a baby. It affects all of us differently and acknowledging that releases us to understand why we feel the way we feel.
Often we can feel unheard, especially if we are talking to our doctor about these feelings and they are not taking it seriously. Rest assured it can be serious, but it is also a normal occurrence and you don’t have to feel like something is wrong with you. There are many counselors and therapists who specialize in this and can walk through it with you.

When it comes to parenthood in general there are so many fears that we deal with. From money, to spending enough time with our kids, to dealing with our own insecurities and inadequacy. While both mothers and fathers deal with all of these feelings. With fathers it can be taboo to admit feeling these things, making it that much harder to deal with.
This is why it’s just as, if not more important for men to reach out to someone to talk to, whether it’s a trusted friend, family member, or seeking out a therapist. The main thing is, don’t keep all these thoughts and feelings stuck inside. What you are doing is not going unseen, and it’s important to keep being the best you possible.
Sometimes that means taking care of the feelings you are having. So rather than keeping them inward, don’t be afraid to share, but welcome the opportunity to be real and honest with your thoughts and feelings.

When it comes to traveling it can already be filled with anxiety from flying, to staying in hotels and not being in complete control of your surroundings. Add in Covid-19 and it can be a very anxious experience. But there are steps you can take to ensure you are staying safe and avoiding contact with anything questionable.
In this episode I share about a recent travel experience I had and what it was like in the different cities I was in, how companies were making arrangements to provide levels of safety, and what I did on my own to ensure my health and safety was taken care of. Often the steps we need to take are not complicated; they just take some extra thought and a little bit extra effort, but the time and effort is worth having the peace of mind with you.
My goal with this episode is to show that being cautions and taking extra steps can help rid you of fear and getting through your travel experience as efficiently and safely as possible.

Regardless of who it is, a friend, family member, co-worker we all may experience someone who struggles with some type of addiction. It is important for us to know how to handle that in a healthy way. In this episode I discuss the importance of boundaries and how to set them up so that you can be sure to follow through with those boundaries.
In addition we have to set ourselves up for success, this includes having the proper resources on hand not only for the person struggling, but also for ourselves. And also setting goals. What do we want to accomplish, where do we want to be, and taking that hard look at ourselves and being honest with what is going on.
We have to remember that as someone dealing with an addict, they are not the only one going through things, but that you are dealing with things just as the addict is.

How do you differentiate between intuition and integrity? Intuition is that inner voice that we sometimes try to ignore and as a result of ignoring it, that voice continues to prod us until we listen and only then do we start to gain peace.
When we start to feel fear, it is usually insecurity creeping its head out. Usually insecurities come from past experiences we have gone through. When it comes to being able to discern between intuition and insecurity it requires us to have a pretty good level of trust, so we can step back and evaluate what is really happening rather than responding from a place of fear and not being able to really evaluate.
When we throw other relationships in the mix and are asking ourselves whether we are following our intuition or giving in to insecurities, it is very important to have honest discussions with the other person, and to actively listen so we really hear what is being told us, not what we assume is happening.

Responsibility is more along the lines of action. Responsibility can be shared, but when it comes to accountability it is the primary responsibility of the individual. It is important for us to be accountable in all our relationships, whether they are intimate relationships, friendships, or work related. What we realize is when we begin to take ownership for our wrongs, and our mess-ups, things become better relationally.
Accountability comes into play when we first listen to understand instead of listening to react, or waiting for the other person to finish so we can say what we want to. It requires us to accept the fact that maybe what the other person is saying is right, which is not alway easy to do. And sometimes it consists of us asking for forgiveness. It’s easier to say we are sorry than it is to cause a fight over something that may not be too big of a deal.

When it comes to fixing others, we can have strong instinctual feelings that we need to help and ultimately fix the broken places in others. But we have to realize that we can’t fix others and it is not our place. We can help guide, and help direct if we are invited into that healing process, but it is not our place to step in without being inviting, even if we see reason to do so.
Everyone’s healing is their own journey. The best way to start helping others is to pour positivity into our children. We say that our children are our first priority, and we provide for them, but pouring into our children involves more than just providing for them. Are they heard? Are they being shown attention, and are we giving our time to them. This is the biggest thing we can do in order to prevent them growing up and being broken.

When I think I can’t achieve something I stop myself and switch my thinking to, I can achieve this. Our words and our thoughts have so much power to affect not just our mindset, but to affect the physical around us. I truly believe there are three parts to manifestation. The first is thinking about it. We have to think it in our minds. The second is believing it. We have to believe it will happen. And third we have to say it, to actually speak it. These three things can help make things a reality.
This is a process and it takes time to develop the habits of manifestation. In this episode I want to introduce to you the idea of manifestation and walk you through how to begin making it a reality in your own life. I personally practice this and can assure you that manifestation brings amazing results.

In this episode we dive into the importance of taking a step back and being real with ourselves of how we feel. We often close off our emotions, thinking we need to hide them. But allowing ourselves to feel the emotion, to cry if needed, and to be okay with not being okay is crucial to maintaining our mental health.
When we bottle up the emotion it can build up and lead us to feeling far worse than if we admit to ourselves how we are feeling. We do ourselves a disservice as well as those around us by not allowing ourselves to be honest with our feelings. If you take anything from this episode, let it be to allow yourself to feel and to be honest with those feelings.

Addiction and gaslighting can go hand in hand. In fact, addicts are experts at methods of gaslighting. If you are unfamiliar with the term gaslighting is when a person manipulates someone else mentally, and can lead to the point where the victim begins to question their own sanity. One of the many methods addicts can do this is by wearing people down with continual harassing. Much like water dripping on a rock will eventually wear away at the rock, so the persistence of addicts or gaslighters can wear us down mentally.
In this episode I dive into the four main tactics addicts use to gaslight the people around them and how we can be on the lookout for these tactics. It is crucial to understand how addicts work, because often we are too close to the situation to see the big picture of what is going on, or why they are treating us the way that they are. I hope to shed light and make sense of an often difficult subject in today’s episode.

In this somewhat “new normal” of how Covid has affected our life it is easy for anxiety and depression to set in and take a foothold in our life. Our social events have changed, from relationships, to home-schooling, to working from home. All of this change can be a stressful time for many and it is important for us to take note of how we are feeling.
Sometimes we get so busy getting everything done, that we don’t stop and take a good hard look at how we are coping, or what is happening on an internal level. Spending more time together and not having outlets can cause depression or agitation that isn’t normally present and it is important for us to pause and reflect and ask ourselves the hard question of how we are really doing.

Grief can come in many forms. When we experience loss, whether that be the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, a relationship etc, we go through grief. There are many ways we express and deal with that grief. Sometimes we can go through multiple stages. So how do we deal with grief in a way that helps us move through a tough situation?
In this episode we talk about where our thoughts and actions can go in grief, and how to recognize what stage of grief we are in. Self awareness is important when we are grieving. To know why we feel the way that we do, can put things in perspective for us and help us to accept what has happened and where we are in our own personal growth journey through a difficult time.

What does forgiveness look like? What does it actually mean to forgive, and how do we move on with our lives after we have been betrayed or lied to? Forgiveness is not sweeping something under the rug and pretending it didn’t happen, but it is acknowledging a wrong was done, and recognizing that for us to move on in our own lives we have to go through the phases of forgiveness.
In this episode we dive into the four phases of forgiveness. What each stage looks like, how to recognize what stage we are in, and how to be self aware of ourselves in order to know if we need to seek the help of a professional therapist. We dive into looking into the eyes of the offender, and while that may seem to go against forgiveness, it allows us to see things from another perspective that can help in our healing process.

When it comes to fighting and disagreements, we don’t usually think of tactics to keep our arguments civil. But the act of fighting gracefully can be the difference of resolving issues and just staying angry at each other. When we scream, swear, or deflect all the blame onto someone else in a fight, we close the door to resolve the issue at hand, and do damage both to ourselves and to the other person in the process.
In this episode, I give clear steps you can take next time you get into a disagreement with someone. Those steps begin with looking inward and evaluating how we feel. Using “I” statements helps the other person understand how we are feeling. We discuss how timers and taking breaks can be greatly beneficial to keeping the conversation productive and prevent it from going off track. We even talk about how to agree to disagree without making the other person feel that they are wrong.
Whether you live with a spouse, family, or roommates, everyone can benefit from learning how to effectively communicate even when disagreements arise.

With the Corona virus going around and our lives disrupted in many ways, that invites added stress. Stress can affect our sleep, and if you struggle already with sleep, then it can make it challenging to get a good rest. That’s why in this episode I want to help give you advice on how to set up a perfect sleeping environment. We typically don’t think about setting the mood for sleep, but by creating the perfect atmosphere and having a nightly routine, we can help our minds to settle down so we can rest peacefully.
From the room temperature, to the lighting, to the quality of your sheets, it all can greatly enhance your sleeping experience. Not only that, but how are you spending your time before bed? Do you watch TV right up until you turn in for the night? If so, practices like this can negatively impact your sleep. I will teach you how to set up a nightly routine that facilitates sleep, and gently prepares your body for rest.

Hey guys! Today we are sharing with you a previous interview about experiencing gratitude in difficult times. I know things may seem very bleak right now but I want to encourage you that there is hope that we can hold on to. We hope this episode brings you light and peace during a very trying time.
If you need us please reach out in our private Facebook group, It’s all Mental or send us an email at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com
Previous Notes:
I had the honor of connecting with mental health advocate and podcast host, Matana Jacobs a few weeks back where she interviewed me on the topic of mental health and gratitude’s role in our wellness.
I am sharing this interview with you today because often we overlook gratitude and do not realize the power that we have in our own hands to shift our energy and perspective and become a fuller and richer version of ourselves. We believe that you have so much to offer and gratitude only amplifies the greatness within you.
In this episode you will hear not only my personal experience with gratitude and the daily practices that I use, but also you will hear more of my intention with this show and why I am passionate about serving you and contributing to your mental health.
We also dig into the “levels” of gratitude and discuss how important contribution is and why “paying it forward” will reap massive benefits to your mental health. This was such a fun episode to record and we know you will gain fresh new insight and receive practical tools you can start implementing today.

In this week’s episode I sit down with Letrice Mason, a nurse practitioner who started Essential Body Bar in Houston Texas. She works to blend medical practices with relaxation techniques, from working with injury to massages, herbal remedies and more. Letrice understands the importance of not putting any one individual in a box, but believes that it is essential to customize health plans and routine around each individual. She has done an amazing job at this through her business where her clients come just as much to see their friends as they do to be treated.
Letrice uses ancient techniques such as the use of wood, herbs, and steaming to create a customized plan for her clients that is unique and effective. She also has blended the mixture of spa and doctor’s office to take away a lot of the stigma that surrounds going to your doctor. We talk about how that is both essential to drawing more people into appointments and how it benefits the mind, body, and soul.

In this week’s episode I sit down with Latoya Nelson who works with divorced parents and helps them overcome the baggage from a divorce as well as teaches them how to co-parent and work together in that regard. We talk about why it’s more important than ever to work as a team to co-parent during times of chaos such as we are experiencing right now.
Our initial reaction is often to keep the fears and worries to ourselves and our children see the outward expression of this worry and fear. Instead we talk about how important it is to talk to your children about what is going on, to admit that you may not know all the answers but that you are working through it, and that you are committed to your children’s safety regardless of whether the situation is uncertain. Children don’t need to think we have all the answers but they need us to provide enough information for them to be assured.

I recently heard an interesting term called “Relationship PTSD”. For those of you who don’t know “PTSD” stands for “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder”. I saw two powerful examples of this recently and wanted to share these stories with you.
Events in relationships can be amazing, but they can also cause considerable damage and prevent someone from experiencing intimacy in future relationships. Relationship PTSD appears to be very real. I highly suggest that if you or someone you know are experiencing this, that you seek help from a professional therapist who can safely explore this with you.
We hope this conversation equips you to not only understand those around you better but also gives you new insight into yourself and intimate relationships. We would love to hear from you! Do you think relationship PTSD is real? Do you know anyone who may be experiencing it? Send us an email at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com or find us in our private Facebook group, It’s All Mental.

In an ever changing world, how can we best adapt to it and become the BEST versions of ourselves? Moving forward will soft skills be our greatest asset? Our guest this week, Emma Sue Price, author of 7 Skills for the Future believes that soft skills are the future and in this interview she shares with us exactly why.
Emma says that she “didn’t set out” to write this book, however after being asked to define the most valuable soft skills she decided to put pen to paper and help us as leaders understand which skills are the most crucial to our growth. She shares with us how to not only refine these skills within ourselves but also how to prepare our children and those we lead with the necessary tools to make the greatest impact.
In this episode, we talk about the difference between our “comfort zones” and our “stretch zones”, how we can build resilience THROUGH community, and why integrity is the hardest skill to define. She also shares with us why she believes each one of us has unlimited capacity to develop these skills and the link between them and self care.
This was a powerful conversation that I know you will gain so much value from. We would LOVE to hear from you as well. What are your thoughts about these soft skills? Which are the most valuable to you? Send us a message at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com and let us know your thoughts!

Do you have a habit of responding or reacting? It is human nature to have an immediate reaction (positive or negative) to what is happening or being said around us. However, there are times that we need to learn how to RESPOND to a situation instead of simply reacting to it.
For this week’s mental note I share with you a little exercise that I recommend that helps train your brain to slow down and gives you the power to CHOOSE how you are going to respond. This is a common communication issue that many of us face, but we can be proactive and retrain our brains to respond in the way that we choose.
We would love to hear your thoughts! Do you have a habit of responding or reacting? What have you found that helps you? What do you think about the stoplight method that was suggested in today’s episode? Connect with us in our private FaceBook group It’s All Mental or send us an email at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com

This week, I had the honor of connecting with Briar Harvey, a writer, business systems expert, and podcast host about her journey navigating her mental health while running her own business.
Briar shares with us her story of beginning diagnosed with Bipolar and Generalized Anxiety disorder as a teenager and as an adult suffering with increased symptoms after the traumatic experience of losing a child. Briar’s business journey has shifted along the way and she has learned valuable coping skills that she generously shares with us today.
We discuss what she says “saved” her during grief, loss, and depression as well as how she has moved past the stigma of mental illness and made it a priority in her life. We dig into the power of our words, the importance of setting time to recharge, as well as how she integrates her mental health practices into her work flow.
Another important point to this episode is that one person’s journey will not look like the next. It is important to take your mental health into your own hands and honor your unique situation. We hope this episode encourages you to see beyond what you are suffering with and find the hope that you are looking for.
What are your thoughts about today’s episode? Do you have any questions about what we discussed? We would LOVE to hear from you! Send us an email at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com

How do you break out of your comfort zone? Maybe you are desperate to make progress on a goal but you are struggling with fear, self -doubt, and are crippled by the idea of failing. This week I share with you what keeps us in our comfort zones and how we can break free from them once and for all.
Why is it important to break free from a comfort zone? The truth is there will be VERY little progress made in any goal unless you are willing to get uncomfortable. Our instincts pull us away from anything that is threatening, but when we can understand the way our minds work, it becomes a little easier to step into the unknown no matter how scary it may feel!
Today we talk about what happens psychologically to keep us in our comfort zones, how we can break free, the importance of manageable goals, and why choosing yourself is one of the most powerful things that you can do!
If you are tired of being stuck in your comfort zone give this episode and listen and let us know what you think. We would love to hear from you! Send questions and comments to media@itsallmentalpodcast.com

What does healing really look like? When you have experienced physical or emotional abuse, can you ever truly heal? How can we break free once and for all from the mental and emotional trauma that is holding us back? This week, I had the honor of connecting with Tracy Osborne, as she shares with us how we can truly become a “Daring Woman”.
In this episode, Tracey shares with us her personal story of experiencing repeated sexual and emotional abuse. She talks about the difficulty of processing through the heavy emotions that accompany trauma and how she has navigated her own healing journey.
We dig into a variety of topics including how to identify the red flags in relationships that may be warning us of trouble ahead and how to shift our thinking and get out of the mentality that the abuse we may be suffering is our fault.
It’s easy to feel trapped but we hope this episode encourages you to break free and no longer allow yourself or your emotions to be controlled by anyone else.
WARNING* We discuss very openly about sexual and physical abuse. If you are sensitive to such topics please understand that the content may be a trigger.

I wanted to come to you on this week’s mental note about the topic of depression. Now that the holidays are over we are getting back into our routines and you might be experiencing symptoms of depression or maybe there is someone you know who is struggling. On today’s episode, I wanted to break down what depression is and its warning signs.
There are many types of depression, and sometimes it is difficult to recognize them. Fortunately, I have noticed more and more people talking about it, which is fantastic, however we still have a lot left to do in the mental health community to educate the general public on the signs of depression.
A key takeaway from today’s episode is that sometimes people struggle with depression and you might NEVER know. That is why it is so important to check in with your loved ones and be truly present with them. Even if you never fully know what someone is going through, it is our job as a community to love those around us.
If you have questions or comments about today’s episode we would love to hear from you. You can email us at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com . We also have a private Facebook group called, It’s all Mental which we invite you to be a part of. We are in your corner and here to support you in anyway that we can.

Did you know that money is one of the most common stressors that can affect your mental health? Whether you have money and do not know how to properly handle it or you struggle week to week wondering how you are going to pay your bills, money is a force in and of itself that can cause you to feel powerless in its midst.
A few weeks ago, I had the honor of connecting with the host of In Search for Adventure and financial advisor Peita D who generously shares with us her wealth of knowledge about not only money but the mindset we must develop in order to be in control and proactive in our finances.
In this conversation, we talk about the importance of letting go of comparison and using other people's success as an inspiration in our our journey instead of a deterrent. We also discuss the importance of being disciplined day to day in our spending but also giving ourselves grace in the process.
Peita shares that often people think “wealth building” means that you need to immediately start thinking about investments. She encourages us to first start small and practice the habit of saving. She even provides a few helpful Apps that will help us save even when money is tight and identifies ways we can spot “accidental spending”.
We hope this episode encourages you wherever you are at in your financial journey. We would love to hear your thoughts and answer your questions! Send us an email at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com and we will get back with you!

On this week's Mental Note I am sharing with you an interview that I recently did with Adrien Paczosa on her show Fearless Practitioners. I wanted to share this conversation with you because in it, I share more about the inspiration behind this podcast and why I am passionate about being an advocate for black and brown females, especially in regards to their mental health.
I also talk about my non-profit Glass Seats and how I was inspired to create it based off of my experience in corporate America. Before becoming a therapist, I spent twenty years in another field, and through that experience I have become passionate about helping young women who may feel limited in the opportunities available to them.
Adrien also asked me about how I am able to balance so many things and still manage to oversee a successful mental health practice. We talk about the importance of self care, how I utilize something called the "power hour", and why I personally schedule in naps!
Another important piece to this conversation is when we talked about asking yourself the question "who am I" and being able to answer that honestly. In order to find the courage to do the things we feel called to do, it requires that we take a deep look inwards and come face to face with who we really see ourselves as.
This is a powerful conversation for those who are wanting to step out of their comfort zones, take more action, and lean into who they know they are on the inside.
Please let me know what you think about this episode and how we can serve you better. Send us an email at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com with any questions or comments that you may have.

For this week’s Mental Note we have something extra special for you. In light of the holiday season I thought it would be appropriate to talk about gratitude.
We would LOVE to hear from you! What are your thoughts around the topic of gratitude? What mental health challenges are you facing this holiday season? Send us an email media@itsallmentalpodcast.com

Imagine having eighteen kids...yes, EIGHTEEN. This week’s guest Jenn Taylor is a podcast host, author, coach, public speaker, and the mother of eighteen children. This week we are talking about what it has been like for her to navigate her role as a mother and identity as a woman.
At the age of fifteen, she was told that she would never have children. After becoming pregnant in her early twenties and during the first few years of marriage, Jenn almost lost her infant daughter. She was a military wife and had to endure the traumatic situation mostly alone. This lesson that this situation taught her propelled her into her calling as a mother and has given her a new perspective on life.
In this episode, we talk about the struggle of infertility and loss, the misconceptions people have about big families, and how to balance the demands of parenthood and everyday life. This is a powerful interview whether you are a mother or not and will give you a deeper perspective on the mental and emotional challenges that ALL women face.
Questions? Comments? We would love to hear from you! Drop us a note at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com and let us know what you think about today’s episode.

I am coming to you today from the She Podcasts Conference. I was just in a breakout session titled “Empowerment for Women”. The panel was made up of all white women and a brave young black girl got up to ask a question during Q&A. She wanted to know as a black female how she could become empowered in white spaces.
Unfortunately, no one on the panel appropriately answered her question. They completely disregarded her. They even made it about them, and one of them changed the subject to how we can empower millennials. The young girl was distraught.
Afterward, I went over to give her a hug and encourage her. She was upset and crying. She felt very alone and misunderstood. I wanted to share this with you because we have to learn how to listen and understand where people are coming from. Not everyone is going to look like you and that might make you uncomfortable. But we have to dig deep and ask ourselves the hard questions.
Thoughts? Questions? If you are willing, we would love to hear about your experiences and perhaps a time you felt unseen. Send us an email at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com

Females are the minority in entrepreneurship. Black and brown females are even a smaller percentage of that minority. It could be easy to shrink back in our goals because of intimidation or even our own self-doubt. How do we push past resistance and step into who we are called to be?
I had the honor of connecting with Sydney Nanberg the founder of She Did It, an organization dedicated to empowering women to practice self-care and step into their full potential. After experiencing bullying as a young child, Sydyney became passionate about helping others overcome limiting beliefs and become more confident in their pursuits.
In today’s episode Sydney shares with us how volunteering for things that scared her and starting her own marketing company prepared her for leading this organization and using her voice despite feelings of fear and self-sabotage. She talks with us about the power of our mindset and how setting up routines and rituals in our lives can set us up for success.
We also dig into the practical side of entrepreneurship and how we can prepare ourselves properly as a business owner and not become overwhelmed. Sydney also gives valuable advice on when you can know if you are ready to quit your job and how we can be more financially responsible.
As Sydney says, at the end of the day it is our mindset that determines who we become. We hope this episode empowers you to step into the right mindset and be the kind of entrepreneur you know you can be.

I’ve recently been watching OWN’s show Black Love about relationships. Although we haven’t talked much about relationships up to this point on the podcast, there are a few things that has really stood out to me by watching this show that I wanted to share with you today.
First of all, I really appreciate the vulnerability of each couple on the show and their willingness to talk about difficult things like going to therapy or understanding their partner’s love language. Feelings of “love” or fondness are not enough to sustain a relationship. It takes work.
One of the main takeaways that I have gained while watching that I wanted to share with you today is the role of self-awareness in relationships. If you do not know who you truly are, how can you show up fully for someone else? We have to put just as much emphasis on getting to know ourselves (not just our partners) in order to fully nurture our relationships.
We would LOVE to hear from you. What are some of the struggles you have in relationships? What have you learned? Do you feel like self awareness is important in relationships? Connect with us at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com and let us know!

In this episode, I am on location in Orlando at the Podcast Movement Conference 2019 and had the pleasure of talking to Adam Bryant also known as “AB3”, host of Bryant Land Country Podcast, about all things outdoors. We discuss how he got into hunting and what it means personally to him. In addition we talk about some of his hunting adventures and near misses that he’s had!
We dive into why people hunt, as well as the purpose of animals that are considered “pests”, and how they still can play a role in the ecosystem. In addition to the details of hunting and learning some of the lingo with it, we dive into whether or not women of color commonly hunt. The answer may be surprising.
What does it take to hunt and why is it so important to understand animals psychology in order to hunt them? How does it help us understand human psychology? From survival skills, to lessons we can learn from animals and through hunting we cover all the bases in this podcast when it comes to the outdoors and hunting.
Thoughts about today’s episode? Do you use hunting or being outside as a way to promote your own mental health? Let us know! Send us an email at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com

Today I am coming to you a bit under the weather. After having to cancel clients and rework my schedule due to the illness, I was reminded of the importance of putting systems in your business for circumstances like this.
My business coach, Dr. Ajita Robinson of the Global Leaders Program, advises me constantly to have the appropriate systems in place to protect me from not getting paid if I am suddenly away.
I wanted to share this with those who are starting their own businesses or those who have businesses but have not structured it in a way that would support them in unpredictable circumstances like sickness or even a death in the family.
I also wanted to give a special shout out to Adam Bryant of Bryant Land Country Podcast, www.bryantlandcountry.com for their incredible episode that I reference in today’s show (episode 42 Buckwild Hunting Club with Corey Bryant.).

Dr. Wendy Carver joins us today to talk about the loneliness we can feel “at the top” and how we can cope. As a black female executive, she found herself many times not only being the only woman but often the only woman of color, sitting at executive meetings. From feeling like you have to say everything perfect to feeling that you are not taken seriously, Dr. Carver takes us through a broad span of emotions and feelings that she experienced both in her personal life and professional career.
Dr. Carver tells us about her career in the professional workplace, as well as her work in the military and what it was like for a woman from a small town at eighteen to leave home and travel the world. We talk about the anxiety she felt how she used positive self-talk to cope.
In addition to her professional career, Dr. Carver talks about how to compartmentalize and make sure you are still present as a wife and mother This balancing act can be difficult and often imposter syndrome can kick in where we feel that we are not giving enough to each task. However, Dr. Carver gives us some practice tips on how we can balance the demands we feel and still maintain our mental health.

I am coming to you today from Atlanta, while attending a conference for female podcast hosts. Yesterday, I arrived early and decided to visit the Civil and Human Rights Museum which left me very emotional. What I saw hit home for me on many levels and I wanted to talk openly with you about my experience on today’s Mental Note.
While reading through the Jim Crow Laws I began to realize that because of my descent it is unlikely that I should even be here. I am a descendant of one of this country's founding fathers, Patrick Henry. His great-niece, Polly Skaggs, was my great, great grandmother and mother of my great grandfather. She was white, his dad was mulatto, and he was a mulatto child.
During those times mulatto children were taken from their homes and put into somewhat of a state facility. The issues that my ancestors faced broke my heart and made me reflect on the very real issues that we still face today. This is a difficult conversation to have but one that we must face.
My visit took a lot out of me yesterday, but I wanted to share it with you and hear about places you have visited or experiences you have had that have deeply moved you. Please drop us a line at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com and share with us your experiences.

In this episode, we dive into the importance of tapping into our sexuality and womanhood while juggling lots of hats in this life. Often we stifle our own needs for the needs of others, but this can be detrimental to our well-being and it’s often not best for ourselves or others when we stifle what we need. We often hide who we are so often and that’s exhausting.
So how do we take off the mask and stop hiding who we are? How do we define who we are in our womanhood? In our sexuality? And as our true selves? In this episode, we dive into the deep reasons of how therapy is almost a necessity and shouldn’t be looked down on by the church. In addition, we talk about how to rip off that mask that we as women try to wear and break down the walls so that we can live as our true authentic selves.
Thoughts or questions about this topic? What do you think about the “superwoman syndrome?” We would LOVE to hear from you! Please drop us a line at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com

In this episode, we get an inside look at one of the leading females at the NASA launching pad, senior project manager, Regina Spellman. We talk with how leadership looks as a woman in a predominantly male filled role, and how to not let that keep you from leading and being confident in what you know.
We also get to discover some behind the scenes details about the facility’s launching pad and a lot of the technical details of how such a large operation takes place, as well as its effects on the environment. This was such a fun interview and I know you will enjoy getting a glimpse of the “behind the scenes” at NASA and especially from the perspective of one of its’ female leaders.

Today I am welcoming a very special guest. I connected with a young woman named, October who shares with us about a time when she found herself facing a deep depression during her sophomore year of college. At first, she dismissed her symptoms, thinking that she was just tired, and needed to push through it.
But as October got more into the depths of her degree in Sociology, began to see and hear of the inequalities and heavy issues in society and business that are still prevalent today, she realized that she needed something else to get her through the depression that she was feeling. She sought help through a therapist and learned how important both mental health practices and spirituality was in her wellness journey.
This is a powerful episode about the mental health concerns of college students and how we can support their journey. If you have any thoughts or questions please send us a message at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com

For this week’s Mental Note we are talking about micro and macro aggressions in the workplace. I wanted to share with you a disturbing story about a woman I recently spoke to who experienced discrimination in the workplace despite having worked at this fortune 500 company for over 20 years.
The woman completed an assignment given to her by leadership in record time only to be reassigned the work because her manager did not believe that she “retained” the information because of how fast she was able to complete it, insulting both her intelligence and character.
I wanted to share this with you in order to open up the dialogue about your own experiences of micro and macro aggressions in your careers. Please connect with us either through our private Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/495592024600893/ or by email media@itsallmentalpodcast.com and let us know about your own experiences.

Today we are continuing our conversation with Sharon Cooper, sister of Sandra Bland who lost her life in after being pulled over by a police officer. If you have not yet, please check out the first half of our conversation where Sandara shares with us the impact losing a sister has had on her life as well as the mental health implications of racism and living in a constant state of fear.
Today we dig more into self-care practices during difficult times, the appropriate way to support someone who is going through a tragedy, and why community is so important. As Sharon says, “Take off your cape, you do not have to do it alone.”
We also demystify mental health therapy and encourage listeners that even if you do not see a therapist, to find a tribe of like-minded individuals that you feel safe with. There is power in community and utilizing connection will help tremendously in your healing journey.

This week I wanted to talk a little bit about fear. While at a conference, I encountered a little girl who was lost and afraid. She didn’t know English and it was difficult for those trying to help her to bring her comfort and find her parents.
After spending some time with her and looking for her family, I started thinking about the implications of fear on our lives, specifically for people of color and those who are immigrants to our country.
How does living in this constant state of fear and anxiety affect our day to day and our mental health? In this week’s Mental Note, I share with you a few thoughts from my perspective but also invite you to share with me your thoughts.
Please send us an email at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com and let us know what you think about fear specifically in relation to our political climate.

I am sure you have heard of the term “self-care” but what does RADICAL self-care look like? And why do we need it? This week, I had the extreme honor of sitting down with Sharon Cooper, an HR business partner in Silicon Valley and the sister to Sandra Bland who unjustly lost her life after being pulled over by a police officer in Texas.
Sharon shares openly about what it was like for her to lose her sister at a young age and the implications that has had on her own mental health, view of the world, and the way she raises her children.
We also discuss honoring the grieving process and placing appropriate boundaries in our lives that will aid in the healing process. This is a powerful interview for those who not only have unjustly lost loved ones, but also those who have to deal with the fear and anxiety of being judged by the color of their skin.
This is part one of a two-part episode so please be sure to check next week to hear the second half of this powerful conversation. If you have any thoughts or questions about today’s topic please send us an email at media@itsallmentalpodcast.com

Welcome to It’s All Mental Podcast. I am your host, licensed professional counselor, and owner of Glass Seats, Pamela Smith. I started this podcast with the intention of starting the conversation about mental health and the everyday experiences of black and brown females.
Everyone, of course, is welcome to listen, however, I have noticed the overwhelming need for this conversation because there are unique struggles within mental health that are specific to females, and even more specifically, females of color.
What you can expect from this podcast is a variety of topics and styles that all relate back to mental health. We also invite you to send in topics or questions that we may feature on our special segment called “The Mental Note”.
You can submit your questions here: media@itsallmental.com
We look forward to digging into this subject and exploring with you why It’s All Mental.
Until next time!
