Spiritual victory should not be as elusive as many suppose it is. Especially victory over our sins––what we have done––and victory over sin––who we are. Regarding our acts of sin, Christ made us victors through His blood that took away that sin in His forgiveness. Regarding our person of sin, Christ crucified us with Him. Therefore, to live in spiritual victory requires us to constantly claim our cleansed record before God and our crucified position in Christ.

It is erroneous to assume that usefulness to God is predicated on the strength of the flesh, especially that of men. Neither male nor female is of any use to God apart from the Spirit of God. In God’s New Testament economy, the Holy Spirit desires to be poured out upon all flesh, and that includes the flesh of woman! When institutional men disqualify women from usefulness to God, they do so in ignorance of ministry’s only source. The climax of the Holy Spirit’s role in Romans chapter 8 is clearly stated in verse 29, that the sons and daughters of God would be “conformed to the image of His Son.” This is the predestined decree of God and the resolute agenda of the Holy Spirit. From God’s perspective, we have been predestined to this glory. In our experience, however, it takes time and process for its manifestation. Essentially, time and process, therefore, serve the eternal purposes of God. What God does in us through the process has to match His eternal decree.

In Romans 8:19-23, Paul slips into the tone of a Hebrew prophet of old, perhaps akin to that of Isaiah. As the Hebrew prophets prophesied a coming renewal of the heavens and the earth to spur the Israelites on towards godly living, Paul, likewise, predicts that a future restoration of the planet will follow the glorification of the children of God. He speaks with an eschatological hope and anticipation regarding the earth so that the Christians in Rome would persevere in their own suffering and trials. In the end, glorified believers will be entirely at home in the new heavens and the earth. Until that time, this fallen world is not their ultimate home. (And neither is it ours!)

In Romans 8:17-18, Paul introduces eschatological promises to the sons of God that endure through suffering. For Paul, Christian suffering is a given in Paul's perspective of the Christian life. Suffering can be expected, even among Christians, as long as we have two feet upon this earth. However, Paul is also quick to mention specific eschatological promises awaiting believers who stay hopeful in the fires of suffering. For the Roman Christians, suffering may not have been a reality they wanted to hear from Paul's pen. Like the Roman Christians, we need to both hear and receive this word on the eschatology of the suffering sons of God in our modern times.

According to Paul the Apostle, a believer in Christ should have a lifestyle altogether different from “outsiders,” or gentiles. Paul’s description of gentiles is that they are useless in their minds, void of understanding, foreigners to God’s life, ignorant, hard in heart, without feeling, loos-living, unclean, and greedy.
