A western set in the rugged Sierras of California during the Gold Rush, Bret Harte's "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" (1869) is a quintessential example of American Regionalism. It explores themes of hidden virtue, the cruelty of "civilized" morality, and the indifference of nature.

"Dagon" is a short story written by American author H.P. Lovecraft, one of the most influential figures in the genre of weird and cosmic horror fiction. The story was written in July 1917 and first published in 1919. It is one of Lovecraft's early works and is notable for introducing readers to some of the themes and elements that would become central to his later writings.

The story is presented as the diary of an unnamed narrator, who describes a horrifying and otherworldly experience he had while exploring a remote and desolate region of the South Pacific. He recounts discovering the existence of an ancient, aquatic deity called Dagon, a monstrous and fish-like creature.

The narrator describes the encounter with the Dagon cult, which worships this sea deity, and how he inadvertently becomes part of their rituals. The story is marked by a sense of cosmic dread and the insignificance of humanity in the face of ancient and malevolent cosmic forces. Lovecraft's writing often explores themes of forbidden knowledge, the fragility of the human mind when confronted with the unknown, and the idea that there are entities in the universe far beyond human comprehension.

"Dagon" is considered a seminal work in Lovecraft's bibliography and reflects many of the themes and motifs that he would continue to develop in his later, more famous stories, such as "The Call of Cthulhu." It is a good starting point for readers interested in delving into Lovecraft's unique brand of horror fiction, which has had a lasting impact on the horror genre.

If you watch baseball, you know that it's about to be the postseason, and what better baseball poem is there than this? How's the weather where you are?

Here in east Mississippi it's gotten to be pretty seasonal after a cooler than usual spring. It will continue to get warmer, and possibly even more humid over the next few weeks, but we're well on our way to a good old southern summer.

This love poem from William Wordsworth talks about the beauty of nature, and then he ponders some other stuff too...

This one of the most well known and beloved passages in the Bible. It's gotten many a person through a difficult point in their life.

And just like Herman Melville was an actual whaler before writing Moby Dick, David was an actual shepherd before he rose from the ranks of the commoners to become King of Israel.

John 10 is a great parallel passage to this psalm, by the way...

Just about everyone, at least in the West, has heard of "The Ten Commandments", and most can even recite at least a couple of them.

In order to better understand western thought and culture, and certainly areas like the "Bible Belt" in the deep American South, it's important to at least be familiar with them.

At alot of laws on both sides of the Atlantic were at some point in history, based on these "commandments".

Here they are, unabridged, and read from the Authorized Version English Bible of 1611.

The Apostle John is one of my favorite biblical writers. He's kind and gentle, but also just as direct, assertive and and unwavering in his faith as anyone.

Here is the first of his three letters and I hope you enjoy it...

In this episode, Ole Will gives Time a good old talking to.

.

I once attended a production of Romeo & Juliet put on by the theater department of Kansas State University, and it was excellent. I was in the Army at the time and always looking to be distracted from the goings on at my job, and Shakespeare was just the ticket to do that. I've loved his writing ever since.

Ambrose Bierce was an American writer, journalist and Civil War (1861-1865) veteran who fought on the Union side. He was one of ten children, all of whose names started with the letter "A".Bierce joined the 9th Indiana Infantry as a Private at the start of the war, and later earned an officer's commission, and was wounded at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. He wrote extensively about his war experience, and "An Occurrence at Owl Creek" is probably his best known story. It first published in the San Francisco Examiner in 1890.

If you're ever at Shiloh National Military Park in southern Tennessee, you'll find a quote by Private Ambrose Bierce of the plaque near "Bloody Pond" which briefly describes the aftermath of the battle.

Another "re-run" from late 2018 that features the 1871 essay by Mark Twain entitled "Journalism in Tennessee". Twain's delightful use of the understatement is on full display as he describes the day his character came south from a job, fell on hard times, and left that afternoon. Like most of his other writings, Twain observations are pretty timeless, and a lot of similarities can drawn with regard to how a news story is given a "slant" by an editor.
