[See image gallery at ironcityrocks.com] Lita Ford came to rock Jergels on Sunday night to a packed house of fans dedicated to the glorious music of the 80s. Lita and her band, Patrick Kennsion, guitar – Marten Andersson, bass and Bobby Rock, drums, were tight and precise from start to finish. The set opened up with “Gotta Let Go” and “Larger Than Life” followed by “Relentless” a track that’s a bit newer in the discography. The set consisted of mostly 80s rockers like “Playin’ With Fire”, “Back to the Cave” where the crowd got to be involved with singing along and the more heavy in your face “Cant Catch Me”. One thing I really liked about the show was that each musician had their moment to shine, taking center stage and ripping off solos including an absolute epic drum solo by Bobby Rock, who even managed to play on the lighting rack behind the kit, just goes to show that as a drummer if you can hit it, it will make music. The set included covers by Elton John, The Runaways, Sex Pistols and Alice Cooper before closing out with hit songs “Close My Eyes Forever” and “Kiss Me Deadly”. It’s great to see that concerts have been selling very well lately and that music still remains an art to bring everyone together no matter what. If you get a chance to catch this show you won’t be left disappointed, Lita Ford rocks!

We are also joined by Jackie Popovec of The Vindys. Hailing from Youngstown, OH the Vindys have been making great inroads into not only the local music scene but also the national. Jackie talks with us about taking the leap of faith going from a cover band to an all-original band, the background of the band, the impact radio had on their success and so much more. The Vindys will be at Thunderbird Cafe & Music Hall on June 22nd for a headlining show. They will be touring this summer in support of Pat Benetar and Neil Giraldo.

[See image gallery at ironcityrocks.com] Sebastian Bach brought energy and youth gone wild to a sold out crowd at Jergel’s on a Tuesday night. While most of the set consisted of Skid Row classics, Bach did pull out a few songs from his new record Child Within The Man which is a very good record that has the classic Skid Row sound. I had the pleasure of sitting on the patio this time (which was a first for me at Jergel’s) and it was a perfect night to relax with a cool breeze and rock n roll as the back drop. One theme stuck through the night and that was that Sebastian Bach loves to have FUN on stage. Whether is was jokes, stories or playful covers of songs Bach had the crowd going from beginning to end. The top highlight songs of the night for me were “Big Guns”, “Sweet Little Sister”, “18 and Life” and of course “Youth Gone Wild!” If you have a chance to have some fun with Sebastian Bach on tour this summer grab a ticket and bang your head for some live music.

Let’s cut to the chase. If you listen to our podcast or watch our social media, Ann Wilson has been declared the great voice is rock music bar none (sorry Mr Plant, Freddie, etc). Did she do anything, at 73 years old, to lose that crown if front of a healthy crowd at PPG Paints Arena last night? She most certainly did not.
Heart now largely consists of Ann’s solo band Tripsitter. Sean Lane and Tony Lucido make up the rhythm section. Not to be outdone by the Lynyrd Skynyrd triple guitar, Heart boasts a QUADRUPLE Ryan Wariner, Ryan Waters, and Paul Moak (also on banjo and keyboards) along with Nancy Wilson all on guitar. And of course Ann Wilson on lead flute.
The intro video got a nice reaction from the audience as it walked through video of major events for each year of Heart’s 50 year career. Oddly OJ Simpson got a bigger reaction than the actual Simpsons. The band took the stage with 1980’s “Bebe Le Strange” the title track from the album of the same name. Keeping with the 80’s vibe right into 1985’s, Holly Knight penned, mega-hit “Never”. Following these were a pair of tracks from 1977’s Little Queen album including “Love Alive” and “Little Queen”. Nancy and Ann’s voices meshed together with the same fluidity as they have for their entire nearly 50 year career. Whatever issues they kept them apart in the past certainly seemed to be in the rear view mirror. The musicians that surrounded them did a very precise job in recreating the songs and solos near perfectly with the records the audience remembered.
Then band then did something rather unexpected and played “This is Now” from Ann’s work with Tripsitter. It was a song that could have just as easily been on some of Heart’s more recent studio albums so it fit in nicely. Nancy’s harmonies on the song made it feel like a proper “Heart Song”. From there they went into the funky “Straight On” which morphed into the David Bowie “Let’s Dance”. Not the Bowie song this reviewer would have picked for Ann or Nancy but it was done well. They could have torn up “Suffragette City”. Nancy then did a beautiful on vocals and mandolin with the signature “These Dreams”. Then throwing it into overdrive Ann belted out “Crazy On You” with the passion she probably had when she inked those lyrics.
From there a nice contrast back to the softer, back to back album title tracks “Dreamboat Annie” and “Dog and Butterfly”. Then came the first of two homages to Led Zeppelin, “Going to California”. The music was note perfect and the vocals probably exceeded Plant even in his prime. Nancy then presented her own solo piece “4 Edward”, a touching tribute to the lost Edward Van Halen. Then came “Mistral Wind” from the Dog and Butterfly album. They then kicked it back to the 80’s with 1985’s “What About Love” and 1987’s cover of the Steinberg and Kelly penned “Alone”. The set closed with the song Ann wrote to her mother “Magic Man”.
As is customary with Heart, the encore consisted of the obligatory Led Zeppelin. In Pittsburgh it was “The Ocean”. No one does Zeppelin like Heart. The night concluded with “Barracuda” and plenty of air-guitar. A career spanning show for sure. Fans of the 80’s Heart might have wanted “Who Do You Run To” or “If Looks Could Kill” and fans of the 70’s Heart might have wanted “Even It Up” or “Heartless” but you really couldn’t walk away feeling you got cheated.
If you had to find something to “complain” about, we’ll leave you with this. Heart doesn’t need to play cover songs. We all love Bowie and Led Zeppelin but if this is the last time we get to see the Wilson sisters do a proper tour, we want more Heart.

McKees Rocks, known for its rich cultural heritage, was rewarded with a country superstar in the
making who gives a voice to a diverse population that feels forgotten. The outlaw country
movement has a new sheriff in town, and his name is Wheeler Walker Jr. While Johnny
PayCheck may have told the world, “Take This Job and Shove It,” or Merle Haggard telling us
that “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink,” Walker Jr’s no filter approach to subjects for the
working man telling what comes after the buses stop running.
Promoting his fifth and strongest release to date, “RAM,” Walker’s appearance Saturday night at
the Roxian Theatre was his first appearance in our region since the COVID lockdowns. His
long-awaited absence was acknowledged with a deafening roar of appreciation for bringing his
world tour to a town once forgotten.
Dressed in a black button-down, freshly pressed shirt, blue jeans, black cowboy hat,
sunglasses, and Hank Williams Jr style beard, Walker didn’t pull any punches or rely on red solo
cups, invite local athletes on a stage, or any audience pandering.
While his stage presence is reserved, rarely moving more than a couple of feet from center
stage may be a smart, calculated move from the Merle Haggard playbook. Working the
audience Garth style could cheapen the Walker concert experience and a lyrical message that
could be confused as a condescending parody.
The evening’s song selection touched on the struggles of the human condition and the
hardships and benefits of being on the road. “Family Tree,” “Summers in Kentucky,” and “She’s
a Country Music Fan” were just a few of the highlights of the tight 90-minute set.
Audience watching was particularly fun, creating a safe space for crowd surfers, exhibitionists,
and mass sing-a-longs. Enough cell phones lit up to make one wonder whether this was a
concert or livestock auction. The show was a rare event that brought people together to forget
their differences. Without getting political, we can do this.
Walker is a superstar in the making. When walking off the stage during the last part of the final
song, the title of which cannot be printed, Walker simply waved goodbye, and the five-piece
backing band carried on for a couple of minutes. The band exited, and chants of “Wheeler,
Wheeler” echoed through the theater, hoping for one last number. That was not to be, as Van
Halen’s “Happy Trails” played through the PA, signaling that all good things must end.

On March 1, 2024 Mercury Studio will release the official audio of the previously released DVD/Blu-Ray package of The Who Live at Shea Stadium. The band at the time consisted of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, the “Ox” John Entwistle and Kenny Jones on drums. The tour was to support the album It’s Hard. The album did mark the end of an incredible run of Platinum albums as it achieved only Gold status. To listen to the album the Who showed no signs of a band on any decline. As popular radio transitioned to my pop-friendly sounds, the Who waved their “Long Live Rock” flag proudly and bombastically.
There’s no denying from the opening chords of “Substitute” that the Who packed this set full of hits. But unlike many tours these days, they played “Cry If You Want”, “Dangerous”, “It’s Hard” and “Eminence Front” from the latest records. New musid live, go figure. They also mixed in “The Quiet One” from Face Dances which preceded It’s Hard.
Are there the classics? Absolutely. Imagine having a catalog of hits so deep that you can play “Baba O’Riley” less than halfway into your set? Thousands of bands would kill to have that as the apex they could close a set with. The Who can stick it anywhere because they still have “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, “Pinball Wizard”, “Long Live Rock” or countless other show stoppers. A real highlight was “Love Reign O’er Me”. The power Roger puts forth in the vocals is beyond words.
After all those hits, they had such fun with “I Saw Her Standing There” from the Beatles, “Summertime Blues” which The Who made their own (originally Blue Cheer) and the finally of “Twist and Shout” which both the Isley Brothers and the Bealtes had massive hits with. Walking out of Shea that October night in 1982, a Who fan could not have asked for me.

When most people hear the name Alanis Morissette, one thing comes to mind depending one who you are and that is their favorite song from Jagged Little Pill. The world didn’t necessarily know who she was until that album and no one listening to modern music when that album debuted didn’t know who she was after its release. On the list of best selling albums of all time, current Alanis occupies the 12th spot. To put that in context, that’s ahead of Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd and any Beatles album.
2005 saw the CD release of The Collection, a “greatest hits” package from Alanis. What’s notable is the fact that it wasn’t just a repackaging of Jagged with a few songs sprinkled in. Jagged was represented with only 25% of the song selection. Songs from soundtracks alone are almost as well represented. The Collection sold a respectable million copies world-wide. The significant things about this collection of songs is gives you an opportunity to really digest that Alanis wasn’t just a flash in the pan so to speak. She didn’t flame out under the magnitude of her own success. She has continued all these years in making music that could quite simple be called “sincere”.
Now in 2023 the long-awaited vinyl release of The Collection (available now) which includes the iTunes bonus track “So Unsexy” as the 19th song. If the color of your vinyl is important, Target has an exclusive “Grape” edition available as well.

[See image gallery at ironcityrocks.com] Robert Plant once said “it’s been a long time, been a long time, been a long lonely, lonely, lonely time” but even that phrase doesn’t not quantify the 7,976 days between Billy Idol appearances in Pittsburgh (June 29, 2001). Monday night the Sultan of Sneer was back and blistered through a set of the old and the new at the beautiful UPMC Events Center on the campus of Robert Morris University.
The show started promptly at 8:30 after Kesley Karter warmed up the audience with her band. Billy & Co didn’t waste any time hitting the audience with “Dancing With Myself”. The hall full of mostly Gen Xers ate the Generation X song up. Billy head to do toe in black with his signature, platinum spikes looking to be in amazing shape and voice any not at all looking the part of a 67 year-old grandfather. The band launched right into “Cradle of Love” from Charmed Life and “Flesh For Fantasy” from Rebel Yell. Fun to watch throughout was Billy’s interaction with his long-time band-mates Steve Stevens and Billy Morrison.
The band then did “Cage” from his latest EP which fit in very nicely as it’s got one of those melodies that makes it sound familiar by the second chorus. Then the band did “Speed” from the Speed movie soundtrack and “Bitter Taste” from 2021 Roadside EP. At this point of the show Billy acknowledged that EP’s take as much work to promote as full length albums and dropped news of a 9-song album on the way. Steve Steven’s led a masterful version of “Eyes Without A Face” which took the song to another level live. Steve then educated the University on his level of musicianship with an acoustic solo that borrowed from Led Zeppelin and Edward Van Halen in spots but was Mr Steven’s through and through.
Then it was time for the party to really start with “Mony Mony” which had many dancing in the aisles. You can’t outdo the energy of that song so Billy went into a story of a friend of his son named Russ who lost a battle with addiction recently. He dedicated “Running from the Ghost” to Russ. Then the band tore up the Generation X song “One Hundred Punks” and “Blue Highway”. It was time for a signature moment and what more fitting than “Rebel Yell”. The crowd shouting “more! more! more!” just worked so perfect. The band capped off the set with encore of “Hot in the City” (ironic for a very cold, May night) and of course “White Wedding”.
Let’s how the completely sold-out UPMC Event Center will convince future Idol dates in the ‘burgh.

I had the pleasure of seeing Acoustic Hot Tuna, aka Jorma and Jack, on April 24 at the Carnegie Music Hall in Homestead. While Jorma and Jack are 82 and 79 years old, respectively, the engaging performance that they delivered did not indicate this. Their musicianship and mastery of their instruments is mind-blowing. They effortlessly use the entire fret board and really the entire capabilities of their instruments without relying on pedals or effects. The performance was high-energy on the one hand, yet understated and humble on the other. Jorma and Jack mostly played music but sprinkled some light banter and self-deprecating humor into the performance.
Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady have been playing together since they met in Washington, DC in 1965. Playing together for nigh on 60 years allows them to act as one big instrument instead of two separate ones. They occasionally talk to one another during the performance, but what is not said is more important than what is. Their performance included several blues standards as well as songs from the Hot Tuna catalog.
The crowd included people of mostly all ages and walks of life. Some members of the audience, including me, were not all that familiar with the Hot Tuna catalog. Others had seen Hot Tuna perform several times, such as one lady who is 83 years old who attended with her 62-year-old son. The mom assured me that we were in for a treat, and she was right. Whether someone knows the Hot Tuna musical catalog well or not, this is a performance not to miss. Acoustic Hot Tuna is wrapping up a 14-date tour of the east coast and mid-west on April 29. They will also be performing on July 20 at the Great South Bay Music Festival in Patchogue, NY.

In November of 2012 the Rolling Stones released the greatest hits package GRRR! to celebrate their 50th anniversary. A month late on December 15, 2012 the Rolling Stones played the second of two nights at the Prudential Center to close this anniversary tour.
By “Rolling Stones Standards” this was a rather modest production but in many ways one could argue it enhanced the organic nature of the performance. Sure there were “ego” ramps and a video wall but it was more about the band and less Ringling Brothers than some tours. The show though really stood out because of a wide variety of guests. First up was a 26 year old Lady Gaga first off of her massive Born This Way album tearing up “Gimme Shelter”. Vocally the song was perfect for her and she was about the only person alive in 2012 that could make Mick look sluggish. She flew around in massively high heals. A fun collaboration to say the least. Joining the band next was John Mayer and Gary Clark Jr for a cover of Freddie King classic “I’m Going Down”. John was certainly a mega star at this time but Gary hadn’t reach that stage quite yet so it was really cool to see the band recognize the two amazing guitarists. Watching Mayer wail did conjure up images of what could have been had he not be focusing on light rock. Mick Taylor then reunited with his mates for the Let It Bleed classic “Midnight Rambler”. Keith and Ronnie really gave Mick and chance to shine as he wove his guitar and Mick’s harmonica beautifully. Finally to but a cherry on top, in New Jersey, they perform “Tumbling Dice” with Bruce Springsteen. At least in the United States, all-time, Bruce is one of a handful of artists that has actually outsold the Rolling Stones so this is a real union of titans. But the beauty of it was how much fun Bruce appeared to be having.
If those amazing guests weren’t enough there was still easily 1:30 of the Stones on their own doing hit after hit. The only “new” song on the list was the “Doom and Gloom” but it is amazing the quality of the “new” Stones songs. Even if radio programmers refuse to play anything past 1985.

Coming hot off their third album simply titled “III” The Winery Dogs power trio kicked off their 2023 tour at The Palace Theatre in Greensburg. The show opened up with the live debut of Gaslight, a song which starts with the signature harmonizing of Richie Kotzen, Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan before melting your face off for its duration. Another live debut followed with lead single Xanadu. The set continued, showcasing the extreme talent of these three great musicians with songs like the funky Hot Streak, the chunky Time Machine and the pounding of The Other Side. Near the end of the set Billy Sheehan took center stage for a shredding bass solo that went directly into classic rocker I’m No Angel.
The main set closed out with a gut puncher sending us into Oblivion. After a short delay Richie Kotzen came back to the stage and sat behind the keyboard as the rest of the band joined him during Regret,a song where you can really hear the rawness and soul in Richie’s voice. What better song to end this great show with than to Elevate the crowd into the night feeling the pure sense of knowing that you saw a show of such great musicianship. Some of the greatest bands are a trio and The Winery Dogs is a must see for those who are into rock n roll! This was an extra special show for me to capture since Mike Portnoy is one of my biggest influences as a drummer. I will be sure to see them again when and if they come back to the burgh.

What better way to spend Valentine’s day than with the thunderous sounds of Ghost and Volbeat. The crowd at the Peterson Events Center was treated to an evening of great music and stunning visuals.

The evening started out with the husband-and-wife duo who make up the band Twin Temple. The self-proclaimed satanic doo-wop got the crowd going and set the tone for the evening.
Billed as a co-headlining tour Volbeat took the stage first and delivered a rocking 80-minute set. The band hailing from Denmark is supporting their latest release Servant of the Mind”. Much like the band Social Distortion their studio material transforms into something much more intense live. Sounding like a cross between Jonny Cash and Metallica, Michael Poulsen and crew tore up the stage with standouts “Seal the Deal”, “Lola Montez”, “Wait a Minute My Girl”, which featured a piano and saxophonist joining the band, and of course the song “Doc Holiday”.

After a lengthy stage switch the lights dimmed and the incense started burning. Ghost took the stage with the track “Kaisarion” which is from their forthcoming album Impera, (due March 11th). Papa Emeritus IV (front man Tobias Forge) and the nameless ghouls too the stage to thunderous cheers. Dressed in a jacket and pants and not the usual priest’s garb the latest Forge commanded the stage. Backed by the nameless ghouls – now with steampunk inspired masks – he led the crowd through “Rats”, “From the Pinnacle to the Pit” and of course the ever crowd pleasing “Cirice”. The only other song from the new album they played was the great “Hunter’s Moon”, which was also featured in last summers movie Halloween Kills.
Ghost has come a long way and they keep getting bigger. The new album is already promising to be a huge hit. The tour continues through the spring, but I’m sure they will hit a new tour cycle when the new album drops.

Kat released her debut full-length album Love Made Me Do It in 2021. Kat talks to us about how music has been a part of her life and art for her whole life, finding inspiration for her lyrics, her musical influences and so much more.
Also joining is Chris Caffery to talk about his band Spirits of Fire’s sophomore album Embrace the Unknown. Chris also catches us up on the latest with Savatage and reflects on the Trans-Siberian Orchestra tour that just wrapped up.
We are joined finally by Bo Howard (bass) and Landon Herring (drums) of Tennessee’s Naked Gypsy Queens. The band recently released their debut EP Georgiana on Mascot Records.

It’s not often one gets up close and personal in an intimate setting with a legend, but that is just what happened this past Saturday at the Carnegie Library Music Hall in Homestead when Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson came to town with his spoken word tour.

You’ve never seen Dickinson like this, animated on stage infusing humor in his anecdotes. At times it was hard to imagine him being the singer of one of the biggest metal bands in the world. The stage was bare, with the exception of a stool, and a monitor with slides that helped illustrate some of his stories.
Dickinson engaged the audience from the beginning with tales about growing up in the British school system and how he deliberately pretended he couldn’t sing to get out of joining the choir, had 2 tons of manure delivered to the headmaster’s door, and finally got kicked out for pissing in the headmaster’s soup. Along the way he discovered Deep Purple and realized he wanted to be a drummer and obtained a set of bongos.
He shared tales of his time in Samson and gave a great lesson on what not to do as a touring band. While talking about Iron Maiden was inevitable it was not the focus on the evening, although we did hear some fun anecdotes that included a humorous impersonation of drummer Nicko McBrain and revealed why God created bass players.
The first portion of the show concluded with recalling his fight with cancer and how he beat it.
Before the show began audience members were able to submit questions via a card dropped in a box in the lobby. The second portion of the show consisted of Dickinson answering these questions. Nothing was off limits. When asked about his scariest experience flying he recalled a tale where Nicko McBrain (also a pilot) had to pick him and a friend up in a plane not big enough for all the people. He also revealed how Flight of Icarus was written in a bathroom with guitarist Adrian Smith before taking the stage. He finished the evening with an acapella take on a verse from “The Writing on the Wall” and “Revelations”
The tour kicked off just a few weeks ago and if you can make it when it comes to your town….go. You will not be disappointed.

In Episode 477 we welcome back to Iron City Rocks Jeff Plate of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The band is in the midst of their annual holiday run performing Christmas Eve and Other Stories this year. We talk about getting back into the grind of doing 8 shows a week, dealing with health and safety protocols on the road, how he and the band dealt without being able to tour in 2020, his regiment for drumming and much more.
We are also joined by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Jim McCarty of the Yardbirds. Jim has recently released his second book entitled She Walks In Beauty co-written with Dave Tompson. Jim shares with us the emotional inspiration behind the book and we talk about what’s going on with one of the most influential bands in history, the Yardbirds.

A “covers” album by Deep Purple produced by Bob Ezrin. When you hear that you are likely to say “things we never thought we’d see Alex”. In the world of Hard Rock you think of Deep Purple as coming from the Big Bang more than being a group of musicians that had influences that shaped them. But pull back the curtain on one of the absolute pioneering bands of modern music, these songs were their “Smoke On The Water”. The songs that made them pick up the sticks, the mic, etc.
“7 And 7 Is” was by a band called simple Love from California. They did the song originally in 1966 just a few years prior to Deep Purple’s entry into the business. “Rockin’ Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu” has been covered by the likes of Aerosmith, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, and the Grateful Dead but was originally done in 1957 by Huey “Piano” Smith and the Clowns. At this point in the album it is only fitting at a band that started in the 60’s did a tribute to Peter Green with Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well”. Of the first three songs, this is the first that really gets the Deep Purple train in full motion. Steve Morse just goes off on a solo between the first and second verses. “Jenny Take A Ride” from Mitch Rider and the Detroite Wheels is up next. In case the title doesn’t ring a bell, think “See See Rider”. This song belongs to Ian Paice as the drums really are what brings this song to life. Deep Purple doing a Bob Dylan song, “Watching The River Flow” my have you scratching your head. Steve Morse with a slide might perplex you more. Both Sonny and Cher as well as Barbra Streisand have covered the next song, Shirley and Lee’s “Let The Good Times Roll”. This has all the element of a jazz, night-club band.
The next song, honestly I was afraid to listen to. Just having no idea how it would sound. Little Feet’s “Dixie Chicken” was done pretty close to the original. No British band could do a covers album and not include the Yardbirds. “Shapes of Things” sound like it belongs in what you would expect for DP to have been listening to. The #1 Jimmy Driftwood hit “The Battle Of New Orleans” is another song you might not recognize by title but “In 1814, we took a little trip Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip” will ring more than a few bells. Maybe the high water mark of the album is “Lucifer” originally done by Bob Seger. This sounds like it could be song right off any of their catalog albums. Cream’s “White Room” was done very tastefully and with the respect any British band would pay Cream. The medley “Caught In The Act” rounds out the album featuring a nice take on Jeff Beck’s “Going Down”, Zeppelin, the Spencer Davis Group, the Allman Brothers, and Booker T and the M.G.’s.
There’s no denying overall when you hear Ian Gillan’s voice, this is indeed Deep Purple. The songs, while not obvious choices, provide a fascinating look at what made the band that influenced so many.
