It's a chilly start with temperatures in the upper 30s, so grab your jacket! But don't worry, the day will warm up to the lower 60s with just a slight breeze and some high clouds. ️

Tomorrow will be similar but with more clouds in the morning. The good news is that the clouds should clear out in the afternoon, setting the stage for rain on Thursday and Friday. ️

Rain totals could reach 1-1.5 inches between Thursday night and Christmas morning, so be prepared for wet conditions if you have travel plans. ☔️ But don't worry, it won't be cold – temperatures will stay in the 50s. ️

I'm taking you behind the scenes to show you how I measure rain for the National Weather Service as part of the NWS Co-op program. You might be surprised to learn that we don't use our fancy automated weather stations for this important task!

The Official Rain Gauge:

Instead, we rely on a trusty manual rain gauge. This isn't your typical Home Depot variety – it's a specially designed-instrument that's incredibly accurate. As you can see in the video, it has two cylinders: an inner one that holds up to an inch of rain, and an outer one that can hold up to 11 inches!

How It Works:

When it rains, the water collects in the funnel and fills the inner cylinder. Once that's full, it overflows into the outer cylinder. To measure the rainfall, I simply use a dipstick to see how high the water level is in each cylinder. In the video, you'll see that we received 0.69 inches of rain the previous day.

So, why don't we use our automated weather stations to measure rain? While they're great for providing real-time data on temperature, wind speed, and more, their rainfall measurements can be less accurate than those obtained from a manual gauge. That's why the National Weather Service prefers the tried-and-true method for official rain reporting.

I also give you a closer look at my automated weather station. You'll see the rain gauge, the anemometer that measures wind speed and direction, the solar panel that powers the station, and the temperature sensor.

If you're interested in getting real-time updates on my weather station data, you can visit sachseweather.com. And of course, don't forget to subscribe to my channel for more behind-the-scenes weather fun!

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into the world of official rain measurement. Thanks for watching!

Rainy Friday, Sunny Weekend Ahead: North Texas Morning Weather

Good morning, North Texas! Bacon Roofing (baked right in!) and Aman Plumbing are here to help you navigate today's wet weather and the sunny skies on the horizon.

It's a mild December morning, with temperatures in the mid-50s, but get ready for things to get damp. Showers will move through the area most of the day, starting in the west and spreading east. Brace yourself for a rainy and dreary Friday.

Don't worry, though, the rain won't be a total downpour. Expect most of it to fall between mid-morning and midafternoon, with accumulations of only half an inch to an inch at most. No severe weather or flooding is expected, so just grab your umbrella and keep your chin up!

The good news? This wet spell will clear out by evening, and the weekend is looking fantastic! Saturday morning might start a little cloudy and damp, but things will quickly brighten up. Temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s, and that sunny trend is here to stay through at least Wednesday of next week. Enjoy the pleasant mix of clouds and sun until our next weather system arrives next weekend, but we'll have more details on that later.

As always, I'm your personal weather watcher, keeping you informed so you can plan your days with confidence. Have a great Friday, a fantastic weekend, and we'll chat again soon!

Enjoy the mild mid-40s while they last, because change is afoot! Those warm days you've been loving? Say goodbye for now. We've got one more day of decent weather today, with highs in the mid-60s and sunshine mixed with clouds. Rain will be wreaking havoc west of Dallas-Fort Worth, but don't worry, it's staying clear of us (for now).

But tonight and tomorrow, prepare for the deluge! Rain will pick up significantly, but fear not, it's not a flood or severe weather situation. Most of us can expect around an inch of rain, tapering off by Saturday morning. Then, the clouds finally part ways, leaving us with a sunny and pleasant Saturday afternoon.

Sunday brings more good news! Fair skies and pleasant temperatures await. And to top it all off, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week promise sunshine and warmth, with highs in the 50s and low 60s. Enjoy every ray!

However, a sneaky rain system might lurk on the horizon for next weekend, but it's too early to panic. We'll keep a close eye on it and update you as soon as we know more.

As always, I'm your personal weather watcher, keeping you informed so you can plan your days with confidence. Have a fantastic Thursday, North Texas!

Brought to you by Bacon Roofing (baked right in!) and Aman Plumbing, your local heroes.

Good morning, North Texas! Brace yourselves for a cool and cloudy day ahead. Mid-40s temperatures might seem balmy compared to recent chills, but don't expect much sunshine to warm things up.

Highs will only reach the upper 50s, so bundle up, friends! Rain chances stay west of Dallas-Fort Worth today, but get ready for a drearier and slightly warmer Wednesday (still no widespread rain, though).

Friday is the buzzkill of the week: rain, cool temps, and general dreariness. We're talking wet, chilly, and not a vibe. Don't expect more than an inch of rain, no flooding, and thankfully, no severe weather. Just put on your raincoat and brace for a gloomy day.

But fear not! The weekend offers sunshine redemption! Saturday afternoon brings clear skies and upper 50s, and by Monday and Tuesday, we're talking 60s and sunshine! Christmas cheer will be back just in time, Santa Claus willing.

As always, I'm keeping a close eye on the weather, so you don't have to. Have a fantastic Wednesday, North Texas!

High temperatures will be 15-20 degrees above normal today with highs in the upper 60s and 70s. Expect south/southwest winds of 10-20 mph with gusts around 25 mph during the afternoon.  A cold front will move into the area on Saturday morning with some patchy fog and light rain possible. It will be slightly cooler and drier following the front's passage, but temperatures will still be near or above normal. Most of next week should feature nice weather with above-normal temperatures. Cooler weather will enter by the end of the week, however, behind another cold front. The front (and the upper-level system it is associated with) will bring a chance of rain to the region during the mid to late week period.

The rain has moved east of the region this morning, but plenty of cloud cover will linger through the day. Despite the clouds, we'll still warm up into the mid-60s this afternoon which is 5-10 degrees above normal. Winds will generally remain light through the day.

The next storm system will bring a chance of rain, along with some potential for severe weather, as it sweeps through the region on Monday. The best rain chances will be across the eastern third of the region, and the highest severe weather potential is along and east of the Interstate 35 corridor. There are still a lot of uncertainties regarding the specific timing and location of storm development and severe weather potential, but we should know more in the coming days. Stay tuned and be safe this holiday weekend!

Thunderstorms will be on the increase this afternoon for areas generally east of Interstate 35/35E and south of Interstate 30. A few storms may be strong or even severe with hail and damaging winds both possible. Locally heavy rain may produce isolated instances of flooding. The tornado threat is fairly low, but cannot be completely ruled out. Storms will continue through the evening before exiting to the east overnight. The rest of the region will miss out, and experience simply a warm (for December) and rain-free day with highs in the 60s and 70s.
