This episode we chat with Niamh Tallon, founder of Her Sport - Ireland's only media platform dedicated to women in sport! Founded in 2018, Her Sport aims to inspire women and girls of all ages to participate in sport, encouraging them to try anything from running to ultimate frisbee, football to softball.
Tallon started the platform due to a clear underrepresentation of women’s sport in the media. Currently just 6% of sports media coverage is given to women which has a critical rippling effect. Without airtime and coverage female athletes lose out on sponsorship, fans and opportunities. By the age of 14, girls drop out of sport at twice the rate of boys. This is not for a lack of passion or skill. Women and girls’ sport are under-promoted, robbing young girls and boys of role models they can aspire to be like. Her Sport aims to give young girls and women the platform to celebrate and champion their achievements and share their stories.

A little bit about JWS:
"Only 4% of sports coverage is dedicated to women’s sports. We’re here to change that.
We’ve teamed up with some of the best athletes in the world to change how women’s sports are covered. This isn’t a token vertical buried in the back pages. We’re not at the bottom of some pulldown menu. We believe female athletes can fill more than the occasional feature—they can be the entire publication. From highlights to podcasts, newsletters and swag, JWS brings fans everything they need to see and know in the world of women’s sports. We’re just getting started, and we’re pumped to have you with us."

This episode we are joined by Jenna Weiner and absolutely loved our conversation with her. She is an ultimate player for the Western Ultimate league, as well as a disc golfer, trans woman, scholar, musician, and TEDx speaker. This conversation was so moving and really highlights one of the most beautiful things that sports can be: a safe space. It's not always the case. It's different league by league, team by team. Jenna's story though is inspirational in how one person being authentic and vulnerable led to dramatic change in her sport.

It's no lie that 2020 has been a tough year. One thing that has kept us laughing, entertained and inspired is the Future Million Heirs! This dynamic trio (Hailey, Amanda and Ali) is bringing together pop culture and the world of women's sports in the battle to close the coverage gap that exists in the sports industry. Women's sports only receive 4% of sports media attention despite women being 40% of athletes in the country. As the FMH team says, "We cover women’s sports. Because you can’t close the pay gap without closing the coverage gap. And because we f*cking love women’s sports." Cheers to that!
We love the Future Million Heirs - give them a follow and you will not regret it!

This week we bring you our conversation with Dr. Lindsey Darvin where we talk about the new 'Name, Image and Likeness legislation' and the impact it might have on women's sports in the US. (There is also a snippet at the end where we talk with VEO CEO, Henrik Teisbæk. VEO is one of the world's most innovative and fast-growing sports tech companies right now whose main product is a football/soccer camera that records matches without a camera man, using artificial intelligence!) Check out links below.
Dr. Darvin is an Assistant Professor in the Sport Management Department at SUNY Cortland.
Find out more about her and links to follow her work below:
Lindsey received her Ph.D. in Sport Management from the University of Florida, her M.S. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Sport Management, and her B.A. from Bryn Mawr College in Political Science. She was a two-sport NCAA student-athlete (basketball and lacrosse) during her time as an undergraduate. Prior to coming to Cortland in 2018, Lindsey worked for a variety of sport organizations as both an administrator and coach. Lindsey began her career working with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and from there went on to work with Harvard Athletics in events and operations. She has also worked within a variety of athletic departments including Villanova University, Drexel University, Bryn Mawr College, and the University of Florida. While at the University of Florida Lindsey served as an academic tutor and in a mentorship role for university student-athletes across a variety of varsity programs. She also has previous coaching experience at the intercollegiate and interscholastic levels of play. Lindsey’s research agenda focuses on diversity and gender equity in sport, as her work seeks to combat the lower rates of female leadership throughout the industry. She has published articles within peer-reviewed journals throughout the social sciences, including national attention for a project published within the journal Sex Roles. Lindsey has also written articles for several media outlets, and has provided expert quotes for media articles featured within the Huffington Post, Vice Sports, Forbes, and Culture Trip. She has also served as an editorial manager for the P.A.A.D.S (Professional Association of Athlete Development Specialists) Research Digest, a monthly athlete development journal containing research briefs and industry related interviews and serves on the review board for the Journal of Athlete Development and Experience (JADE).

We want to take a moment and honor a true sports legend, Kobe Bryant. He changed the sports world as we know it and can only imagine what he would have continued to do, especially on the women's side.
Here is the transcript of Kobe Bryant's award-winning animated film, Dear Basketball. It was harder to record than we thought - such a perfect good-bye to the sport he loved. We know athletes around the world resonate with this message. Rest In Peace, Black Mamba.
Dear Basketball,
From the moment
I started rolling my dad’s tube socks
And shooting imaginary
Game-winning shots
In the Great Western Forum
I knew one thing was real:
I fell in love with you.
A love so deep I gave you my all —
From my mind & body
To my spirit & soul.
As a six-year-old boy
Deeply in love with you
I never saw the end of the tunnel.
I only saw myself
Running out of one.
And so I ran.
I ran up and down every court
After every loose ball for you.
You asked for my hustle
I gave you my heart
Because it came with so much more.
I played through the sweat and hurt
Not because challenge called me
But because YOU called me.
I did everything for YOU
Because that’s what you do
When someone makes you feel as
Alive as you’ve made me feel.
You gave a six-year-old boy his Laker dream
And I’ll always love you for it.
But I can’t love you obsessively for much longer.
This season is all I have left to give.
My heart can take the pounding
My mind can handle the grind
But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye.
And that’s OK.
I’m ready to let you go.
I want you to know now
So we both can savor every moment we have left together.
The good and the bad.
We have given each other
All that we have.
And we both know, no matter what I do next
I’ll always be that kid
With the rolled up socks
Garbage can in the corner
:05 seconds on the clock
Ball in my hands.
5 … 4 … 3 … 2 … 1
Love you always,
Kobe

Welcome to our podcast series on Title IX!
In today's pod, we chat with Congresswoman Pat Schroeder - the first female U.S. Representative elected in Colorado.
Pat was elected to Congress the same year that Title IX passed (she began to serve the following January) and we have a conversation about reactions at that time and how society has been impacted from Title IX ever since.

Pat Summitt was an American women's college basketball coach who accrued 1,098 career wins, the most in college basketball history (man or woman) upon her retirement. She served as the head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team from 1974 to 2012. In those 38 seasons, the legendary coach never had a losing record. Before retiring at the age of 59, Summitt won eight NCAA championships (an NCAA women's record when she retired and the third most all time). She passed away at the age of 64.

Heather and Ashley met at Ali Krieger's adult soccer camp and we know you'll enjoy this episode - especially if you've been standing off on the sidelines waiting for permission to say, "Hey! I loved playing that as a kid - who said I had to stop once I became an adult?!"
