Stu Buchanan talks with artist Bridget Chappell - raver, musician, writer and organiser - who makes frenetic and febrile electronic music as Hextape, and has been organising parties in drains, observatories, and other fascinating locations for many years. In 2020, they released their debut album under their own name titled Undertow, which blends sonified data from the City of Melbourne’s Open Data Platform with Melbourne's public sound sculpture, the Federation Bells.
Brought up in Canberra, now resident in Melbourne; Bridget has a diverse practice that also encompasses writing, teaching and curating, as well as sound art for installations and performances; most recently for their first solo exhibition No Comment, which investigated the science of phase cancellation and its potential role as an act of sonic resistance.

Having dedicated much of her early career to the electronic duo The Golden Filter, Penelope Trappes released her solo debut Penelope One in 2016 on the Optimo label; a release she described as "percussion-less, reverb-heavy haunting atmospherics with dystopian themes". She signed to Houndstooth for Penelope Two, which mixed field recordings, meditations and guitars with synth drones, piano and layers of reverb.
Earlier this year, she released Gnostic State, a commissioned sound work for Longform Editions, and this month released a new four-track EP, Eel Drip.

Laurence Pike is a Sydney-based artist who for the last twenty years has been investigating the worlds of electronic music, jazz and leftfield rock; initially as founder and drummer of Pivot (latterly PVT); through various collaborative projects including Szun Waves and Triosk; and more recently as a solo artist, release three albums in as many years.
Using this new album 'Prophecy' as a backdrop, Laurence reflects on the place and purpose of art amidst apocalyptic events; how underlying shifts in culture and society are impacting on the future of music; and his upcoming collaboration with Angus Andrew as the newest member of Liars.

In the second episode of a two-part Out From Under special, Stu Buchanan talks to Mitchell Jones; founding member of both seminal Australian experimental band Scattered Order and the early 80s record label M-Squared which balanced the prevailing sounds of post-punk with lo-fi punk electronics and experimental explorations from a close knit community of artists.
We hear from M-Squared artists Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast, Systematics and Ya Ya Choral, along with Prod, A Cloakroom Assembly and Solipsik, the offshoot of renowned Australian industrial group SPK. We also pick up the Scattered Order story following the demise of M-Squared in 1984, and hear about their journey through the 80s and 90s, heading to an unexpected reformation seven years ago.

Whilst the legacies of post-punk, DIY electronics and proto industrial are widely known and documented in the UK and US scenes, their impact in an Australian context is less widely recognised. Bonding over the discovery of Cabaret Voltaire imports in Sydney record stores, Scattered Order formed in 1979 and gorged on a wide range of inputs to create a sound and visual aesthetic that was unique in Australia at the time. Together they also formed the label M Squared and fostered an impressive roster of bands such as Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast, Systematics and Ya Ya Choral.
In Part I of a two-part interview, Stu Buchanan talks to Scattered Order’s Mitchell Jones about the early years of the band and the formation and impact of the M-Squared label throughout the late Seventies and early Eighties.

Brett Thompson has been the guiding force in the Australian band Rand & Holland for nearly fifteen years, but it's been a tumultuous and often torturous ride. Widespread love for their lo-fi folk debut led to a polished pop follow up that furthered their critical acclaim whilst also setting in place a chain of events that led to the band conducing an artistic volte-face. They recorded a dark, intense and experimental third album, polarising audiences at a short series of live shows before abruptly breaking up.
Four years later, in 2015, the fabled album posthumously saw the light of day, and in this episode, Brett Thompson gives a rare interview, explaining the background to the album and the breakup, and revealing that Rand and Holland is, in fact, far from over.

For six years, Nathan Jenkins was part of Australian extreme metal band The Amenta, known for their refusal to fully commit to any sense of what a metal band should be. After working within those extremities and contradictions, Nathan established the solo project titled Host, fusing dark ambient, noise and drone. Through her work she begins to “uncase electronic music for what it really is”. Andrew Tuttle is an artist who for twelve years has been exploring the relationship between the electronic and the acoustic – primarily by marrying the worlds of laptop processing with that of banjo and acoustic guitar. He has played live with artists such as Matmos, Mike Cooper, and Blank Realm, and recently released the album ‘Fantasy League’ on the Room40 imprint, Someone Good.
Andrew discusses the inherent tension in his work and his relationship with his home city of Brisbane. Curator, musician and sound artist Lawrence English founded his Room 40 label over fifteen years ago, and in the intervening years has nurtured over 150 releases in a roster that includes David Toop, Tim Hecker and Grouper and Australian figures such as Oren Ambarchi, Chris Abrahams, and Ben Frost.
In a wide-ranging interview, he talks about his long-standing relationship with the city of Brisbane, his deep commitment to opening the doors to seemingly inaccessible music, and the ways in which he considers our complex and evolving relationship with sound and listening.

No Anchor formed in Brisbane in 2007, playing their own unique variation of ‘sludge doom’ with two bass guitarists and a drummer. To date they have recorded three albums, most recently the acclaimed ‘Real Pain Supernova’. Formed while field researching sound in 2008, Yolke released their debut album ‘Poppy Wash’ back in 2010, and it quickly drew references to shoe gaze, krautrock and folktronica, with some of the reviews citing the pop quirks of Caribou and Ariel Pink as influences.

Pioneering the use of tape loops and samples in the late 70s and early 80s, Severe Heads forged an innovative career that stretched across three decades. Retiring in 2010, Severed Heads nonetheless will come together again this month to play a series of shows with electro-pioneer Gary Numan, and in this episode give what they describe as "their final live to air performance" on New Weird Australia.
Over 50 minutes in length, this exclusive Severed Heads set is in two parts – a ‘pop’ set featuring well-known classic tracks from the back catalogue, and a shorter ‘weird’ set, with the band recreating early material with Ableton Live. Well known experimental musicians in their own right, MARCUS WHALE (also known as SCISSOR LOCK) and TRAVIS COOK (who performs as CYST IMPALED) moved into unique territory in 2010, recording as alternative pop duo COLLARBONES. Marcus and Travis joined Stu Buchanan to talk about their evolving project and to play live in the studio. They also discussed their (then) forthcoming live appearance with Melbourne’s PSUCHE (feat Oscar Key Sung). In addition to hearing the tracks ‘Kill Off The Vowels’ and ‘Beaman Park’, we also hear them play a cover of the PSUCHE track ‘I See A Wolf’ and preview the new PSUCHE album with the track, ‘Recognise’.

By their own admission, CRAB SMASHER are a NSW based group of “improvisational sound sharks crafting a frenzied hodgepodge of weirdo psychedelic noise rock and experimental pop delicious”. Having morphed through a variety of lineups and styles since their formation in 2002, the band took time out to visit the New Weird Australia radio show with guest presenter Brooke Olsen. The band delivered a rare live acoustic set and discuss what it means to be “the first carbon neutral noise band”, playing in a Newcastle scene big enough to fill a small living room.

Mitch stands as one of the key figures in the history of alternative music in Sydney. Together with Michael Tee, Jones founded M-SQUARED Records – home to a cluster of now seminal local post-punk artists such as SYSTEMATICS, THE MAKERS OF THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST, YA YA CHORAL, PROD and their own band, SCATTERED ORDER. Nearly 30 years after the fact, SCATTERED ORDER reformed their original line-up, both playing live and recording once again.

An incomparable duo from Melbourne, with a unique brand of mutant post punk noise akin to Boredoms or The Fall. For the past 20 years, Jen and Zach have played in various ensembles including Sea Scouts, Unlimited Friendly Objective, Mongoose, Ditchboss and Monster Monster Monster. For just over the past 10 years though, it's primarily been GO GENRE EVERYTHING. Over that time, GGE have self produced a handful of limited, mostly hand made releases and played hundreds of shows (including a tour of Japan).
