Parable of the Dragnet

Matthew 13:47-50

This Parable declares warning and hope

We must choose to trust in Jesus Christ

We do not have to be afraid of God’s final judgment

Matthew 13:47-50

“a large net thrown into the sea….they dragged it to shore”

-the kingdom of heaven is like “a net cast across the world,

being pulled toward the final reckoning”

-we cannot escape the final destiny of the end of this world!

“every kind of fish”

-we are all alike sinners, but not all sinners sin alike!

-similar to wheat and the weeds (vs 24-30) parable

-Christians are not supposed to segregate and isolate

-we must be separate from evil living, but we will always

Co-exist among those who live for evil

“gathered the good fish, but threw out the worthless ones”

-imagery of sitting on the seashore sorting out the good catch of

fish from the rest of the trash hauled in by the dragnet

“The angels will go out, separate the evil people from the righteous”

-Jesus explains to the crowd that this parable illustrates the

great separation of believer and unbelievers at the “end of time

-God is our final judge! His angels will execute perfect justice

-Rev 20:11-15 Great White Throne of Judgment

“and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping an gnashing of teeth”

-similar to Matthew 13:42

-Luke 16:23-24, 27-28 Jesus describes a rich man in hades

-in torment, in agony in this flame!, place of torment

-Rev 20:11-15- the unrighteous are thrown into the lake of fire

-Rev 20:10 The same place where Satan, his demons and

the false prophets will be “tormented day and night forever

and ever”

-gnashing of teeth- regret, remorse, sorrow

Evil/Unrighteous People Reject Jesus Christ

-Revelation 20:11-15 The Great White Throne of Judgment

-they are judged by their works

-Romans 3:10 No one is righteous!

-Romans 3:23 All have sinned and have fallen short of the

glory of God

-their names are not found in the book of life

Good/Righteous People Place Their Faith In Jesus Christ

-Romans 3:26 God declares righteous “the one who has faith in

Jesus”

-Eph 2:8-9 We are saved by grace through faith, not by works

-enter the kingdom of heaven today! Trust in Jesus Christ

Trust God to do what is right!

-He is just- He WILL execute perfect justice

-do not impose our imperfect justice system on God!

-do not worry if this world refuses to condemn evil

Romans 12:19 “vengeance is mine, I will repay”

-He is love-

-he will keep His promise to keep/save all who trust in Jesus

-he will make everything right

-perpetrators will either be justified by Jesus Christ or

personally pay for their wickedness forever

Let anyone who has ears listen!

Sermon notes:

Parables of the Hidden Treasure and Priceless Pearl

Matthew 13:44-46

February 20, 2022

Have you found the meaning of life?

Some aren’t searching at all

Some are searching carefully

Some search from time to time

Jesus invites us to search and find the meaning of life

-the kingdom of heaven

-the King of heaven!

The Hidden Treasure in a Field

No ethical problem for the original listeners

-burying valuables was common in Jesus’s day

-Rabbinic law: If a man finds scattered fruit or money it belongs

to the finder.

-the treasure didn’t belong to the landowner, someone else hid it

-he would never have sold the land if it was his treasure!

-the finder buys the land fairly

-remember: always interpret scripture in context!!

“in his joy”

-the person found the treasure by circumstances, not by choice

-some people find Jesus even when they aren’t looking for Him!

-some stumble into the truth about Jesus

-some are trying to disprove Jesus and find Him

-Jesus is hidden beneath the surface of this worldly life

-true faith in Jesus Christ gives us joy!

-a joyless church member may not have found Jesus!!

“he goes and sells everything he has and buys that field”

-he does not leverage the treasure to get the field

-he realizes the treasure is worth more than everything he

already has

The Priceless Pearl

“Again” ties the previous parable to this one- two illustration with

the same meaning—helps us interpret them both carefully

“A merchant in search of fine pearls”

-Pearls signified wealth- worshipped by Egyptians, Romans

1 Tim 2:9 don’t flaunt wealth/pearls

-Divers risked their lives to find pearls- dove in tied to rocks,

held their breaths as long as possible to search in darkness

-Some people are looking carefully for the true meaning of life

“When he found a priceless pearl”

-nothing compares to incomparable value of Jesus Christ!

-finding Christ is the beginning of finding everything else

“He went and sold everything he had and bought it”

-“I give up all I have and God gives me all He has” J. MacArthur

Conclusion

The kingdom of heaven is not immediately seen

-some find Jesus without looking for Him

-others find Jesus while they are looking for Him

Following Jesus is more valuable than anything else we can possess

-Jesus brings up money, not the church!

-modern philosophy says to diversify your investments

-Jesus says: cast all your eternal hope on Him!

We must choose to follow Jesus

-Jesus possesses us when we give up possessing anything else

-Whatever we worship possesses us!

-are you willing to let Jesus control your possessions?

Since that time, over 62 million babies have died, but many have been saved thanks the heroic work of pro-life pregnancy resource like A Hope Center, a Fort Wayne-based ministry helping mothers and fathers discover their next right steps for receiving and nurturing children. Notes

How To Practice Christian Freedom

Romans 14:13-23

Introduction

How to practice Christian freedom

  1. Value relationships over rights vs 13-15

-Don’t let your freedom cause a weaker Christian to stumble

-Abstaining from something does not mean you agree with the

Weaker brother or sister

-respect the weaker Christian’s conscience vs 14b

-“walking according to love” this tests what you value most!

  1. Follow the Holy Spirit vs 16-18

-Following God is more important than exerting your rights!

-vs 16 Our “freedoms” should never cause people to slander

You or the community of faith

-Christianity is not about rules/freedoms about eating/drinking

Evidence we are following the Holy Spirit: vs 17-18

-Righteousness

-Peace

-Joy

Vs 18b- “human approval” common understanding among

Believers that we are following God’s leadership

  1. Aim for peace and building up one another vs 19-23

-pursue- intentionality

-pursue what promotes peace

-and builds up one another

-don’t tear down what God is raising up spiritually- vs 20

-Abstaining is better than exerting your freedom if

it cause a Christian to stumble

-How to enjoy your eating and drinking freedom

-don’t do what you doubt is right

-live by faith- don’t try to earn God’s favor!

Final notes:

  1. This is not talking about clear Biblical commands
  2. The weaker Christian is not in charge- some churches

Defer to weaker consciences and create legalism

What is your next right step?

Be Encouraged by Christ's Birth, by Pastor Greg Byman. Delivered 12/20/2020 at St Joe Community Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. For more information visit http://www.stjoecommunitychurch.org/sermons/worship-service-for-sunday-december-20-2020.

Pastor's notes:

Be Encouraged By Christ’s Birth

Luke 2:1-7

This year we have a fresh appreciation for the little things

-Time with family, walks together

-We miss handshakes and hugs, coffee shop talks

-some miss friends at the gym exercising together

The ordinary things in life have become extra-ordinary

I want to challenge us to have a fresh appreciation for the ordinary story of Christ’s birth

-We often glance through these verses as common knowledge

-Manypeople who don’t follow Jesus even know the story

-A young girl gives birth to a child- big deal to Mary btw!

-however, childbirth is common, ordinary, 385,000 a day!

-Billboard on Coliseum Blvd announces birth names 24/7

-This child was not well known at birth

-The town didn’t even care that his first bed had to be a manger

Christ’s birth is also extraordinary!

-This birth fulfilled prophecy

-Mary was a virgin- this disrupted his parent’s lives!

-Jesus grew up to change our world forever as our redeemer!

I want us to be personally encouraged by Christ’s birth

-discover a new appreciation for this ordinary/extraordinary story

Why Christ’s Birth is encouraging

  1. Every birth is important

-Jesus chose to enter humanity through childbirth

-He honored the way in which everyone is born, didn’t just appear or descent from the heavens like an alien or extraterrestrial being

-Your birth was important!

-it doesn’t matter how many people got the announcement

-it isn’t dependent on how important your parents were

  1. Every parent is important

-Jesus needed Joseph and Mary to take care of him

-He could have been born self-sufficient, but he wasn’t

-Mary had to wrap him in cloths to keep him warm

-Mary had to find a bed for him- the manger

-Jesus didn’t need popular or powerful parents

-Joseph and Mary simply had to do the normal things

Parents must do to take care of children

-I wonder if Mary and Joseph felt inadequate!

-how do you raise God? What will this be like?

-can you mess up raising God?

-You are important to your children (or children around you)

-children don’t care how important the world thinks you are

-children just need you to do the ordinary tasks of

Nurturing them, protecting them, loving them

  1. Beginnings do not determine endings

-Jesus was unknown to the world at birth

-He gained a godly reputation growing up but wasn’t a world

influencer!

-Jesus simply came to fulfill will of His Father

John 5:19; Philippians 2:5-8

-Your beginning does not determine your ending!

-Stop blaming your past for your present problems

-Stop believing the lie that you will never matter

-Jesus invites all of us to live a fruitful life!

John 14:4

Be encouraged by Christ’s birth!

  1. Thank God for your birth

  2. Take care of the children God gave you

  3. you can do it! God didn’t mess up by giving them to you

  4. Live for the purposes of God

-Do not let your beginning dictate your ending!

-Surrender your life to Jesus Christ!

March 22, 2020: In the book of Joshua, God warned his people to pay close attention to his leading because “You haven’t traveled this way before.” Today, we are carefully following our government and health leaders because we rightly want to suppress a monster disease called coronavirus, but Jews and Christians alike have been doing something similar since Joshua exhorted the Israelites and Jesus exhorted his disciples to “come, follow me” and that’s a far cry from our modern cultural anthem, “Hey, do your own thing.”

Today, Pastor Greg Byman explains how God taught the Israelites to follow Him carefully. Coronavirus or not, today we have the same orders—look to Jesus and follow him carefully.

March 15, 2020: We long for peace, but what is it and how do we get it? The world tells us that we get peace by acquiring stuff and insuring ourselves against an uncertain future, but Jesus had a very different idea of what truly calms a man’s anxious heart. Today, it is the Coronavirus. Yesterday, it was Ebola, polio, nuclear war, foreign invaders, leprosy, or a happenstance shingle that falls off a roof. If Jesus promises, “…my peace I leave with you” and then follows up with a command, “Do not be troubled or fearful,” do we have permission to insert, “unless….”? In this hour, like every hour since and every hour henceforth, we need His peace.

Today, Pastor Greg challenges you to remember who stepped up to say, “here am I, Lord, send me to help come to know Jesus.” If God heard that person’s prayer and honored his/her labor on your behalf, would he not honor the same by you on behalf of another lost soul? If God could use fallen men and women to reach you for Jesus, could he use an imperfect but faithful servant like you to reach somebody else today?

February 2, 2020: When you think of someone far from God, who’s the first person who comes to mind? Is it a neighbor? Coworker? Parent? No matter who it is, God can use you to reach them. Today, Pastor Greg Byman begins a new series called, "Who's the One" and is based on a national campaign of churches to challenge and inspire the body of Christ to reach neighbors, co-workers, friends and family with the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to do this one at a time, by focusing not on the multitudes who don't know Christ, but instead on just one--your One. Who is your One?   About St Joe Community Church St Joe is located at 2900 North Anthony Blvd., just a few blocks south of the campus of Purdue University at Fort Wayne.
