Immediately following His own baptism, Christ withdrew into the wilderness for a focused and intense time of prayer and fasting that lasted forty days. In remembrance of Christ’s journey and life, from His anointing at baptism to His holy self-sacrifice, many contemporary church doctrines celebrate a similar forty-day period known as the season of Lent, traditionally beginning on Ash Wednesday. Although some associate these terms with non-Protestant faith traditions, the exclusivity of its observance is not restricted to any one faith under Christianity. Rather, the season of Lent allows for a time of reflection, prayer, and fasting—joining with fellow believers for forty days, taking part in a communal faith that focuses on denying bodily needs in order to proclaim the sufficiency of God as provider. Christ himself said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). By denying simple, routine needs of the body, such as the readily accessible provisions that we take for granted, God is able to retrain our minds in understanding that He is the ultimate satisfaction for our true neediness.
