This summer, Duke REU student (Bernhardt Lab) Tyler Edwards endeavors to tell the behind-the-scenes story of the Hubbard BrookWater Record through a podcast series. As one of the data collectors for a new dataset studying macroinvertebrate emergence from the streams of Hubbard Brook, she has gotten a first hand look at the process of creating and maintaining long-term data. Long hours of bug counting have raised the question, “why is long term ecological data important?” Through a series of interviews with Hubbard Brook researchers, technicians, and educators, she hopes to answer that question
In this last episode for now, Tyler speaks with the US Forest Service Team Leader at Hubbard Brook, Dr. Lindsey Rustad, about waterviz.org, a science communication and data visualization project that converts the Hubbard Brook water record into art and music. She closes the episode with a conversation with her advisors, Dr. Emily Bernhardt and Dr. Emma Rosi, who were entrusted with the protection of the Hubbard Brook Water Record by Dr. Gene Likens. In this episode, Tyler talks to Ian Halm, the Site Manager and go-to-person for all things related to the forest at Hubbard Brook, and Tammy Wooster, the Senior Research Specialist who collects data from the field for the Water Record. Both have been working at Hubbard Brook for decades and have watched the data collection process evolve during their time there towards the incorporation of digital sensors.
In this episode, Tyler has a conversation with a recipient of the National Medal of Science and one of the co-founders of Hubbard Brook, Dr. Gene Likens. He recounts his beginnings as a scientist as well as the role of serendipity and effective communication in his storied career as a researcher and environmental activist that led to the passage of the 1990 Clean Air Act amendments.
