A Pola couple donated two puppies to the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. The eight week old Dutch Shepherds are both female. They are named Raven and Josie. Police say they are the youngest dogs to join the department.

Erin Seyfrid and her boyfriend, David Meyers, live in Paola and were caring for a litter of six-week-old Dutch Shepherds. They called the K-9 Unit and asked if they wanted two of the puppies.

Raven is living with an officer’s family and 10-year old dog in the K-9 Unit who will likely retire in eight to twelve months. Raven will learn from the older dog and the department hopes she cam be ready to work with her handler in a year. Josie is also living with an officer who is a member of the K-9 Unit. The Department typically spends $15,000 for each K-9. That includes the dog and the extensive training. Kansas City Police have considered creating their own puppy program, to save the K-9 Unit money.

This is the first time Seyfrid and Meyers have donated their dogs to law enforcement, but say they may continue to donate, depending on how this donation works.

A few weeks ago, Franklin County Development Council Director, Paul Bean, asked if there was anything he could do to help raise funds to provide temporary housing for the homeless at local hotels during very cold nights. He put the word out to organizations, government entities and industry in Franklin County. His goal was $20,000. Bean is proud to report that goal has been met:

Bean says Advent Health Ottawa kicked off the campaign with a $2,000 donation, that was matched by Franklin County and the City of Ottawa. Several other Ottawa organizations and businesses kicked in. The money will go to Hope House and be used exclusively for temporary housing. This year, nearly $20,000 has been spent on hotel rooms for those in need, during extreme cold.

A Kansas man has been charged with making threats to kill President Joe Biden. Authorities say 37 year old Scott Ryan Merryman of Independence, Kansas, was arrested last week after he traveled from his home, to Maryland. Federal authorities say Merryman called police in Independence last Tuesday and said he was on his way to see the President.

When a Secret Service agent called him last Wednesday, Merryman told the agent that God told him to travel to Washington to “lop off the head of the serpent in the heart of the Nation”. The agent noted that Merryman denied the serpent was the President; but, stated that he had information about the book of Revelation that he was being instructed by God to give the President.

U. S. Judge Pamela Sargent spoke of arranging for Merryman to get a mental health evaluation.

The Franklin County Health Department released the latest COVID statistics yesterday. There were 255 new cases reported last week, giving the county 358 active cases, down again from the week before. As of yesterday, there are seven people hospitalized at Advent Health Ottawa for COVID related illnesses. On a sad note, they report six new deaths of County residents due to the virus. A total of 78 Franklin Countians have lost their lives to COVID since the pandemic began, just over two years ago.

Cases around the Nation continue to drop. Officials point to vaccines as one cause. However, some health organizations say that the rise in usage of home test kits has led to many people testing positive and not reporting it to their local health department.

People in the health profession are urging people to continue to take precautions until more people get the vaccine and develop antibodies to the virus.

A State Legislator has been charged with two traffic violations over his late November arrest on Interstate 70; but, not with driving under the influence. The Highway Patrol says Democratic State Representative, Aaron Coleman of Kansas City, faces charges of speeding and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle as required by law, over a November stop. A complaint claims Coleman was driving 92 miles per hour when the speed limit was 75. Together, the charges could result in the several hundred dollars in fines.

Coleman has been embroiled in controversy since he ran for the House in 2020, when he acknowledged past abuses against girls and young women.

The Kansas Highway Patrol initially said he had been arrested in Douglas County on suspicion of DUI, but a decision on charges waited on the report on the substances in Coleman’s body at the time of the stop

A former Miami County man, charged more than six times since 2005 for violating State laws that require him to register as a sex offender in different localities, is awaiting a March hearing, after being released from Anderson County Jail on a Personal Recognizance Bond in November. Court records show 57 year old Jeffrey Gregg, with a criminal history sheet showing numerous past felonies related to a lewd and lascivious conviction in Johnson County in 2000 and an attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child conviction from 1996.

Gregg’s record shows additional charges of failure to register, a felony under Kansas law, in Miami County in 2005, 2012, and 2017 in Miami and Anderson Counties, previous to the current June charge filed against him in Anderson County.

Gregg was released from Anderson County jail on a $25,000 personal recognizance after his defense attorney’s motion on the basis of an ongoing medical condition. Anderson County Attorney, Elizabeth Oliver, said she did not object to the bond change, due to the County’s financial obligation to pay for Gregg’s care if he remained in custody. Gregg’s case is set for a review hearing at 8:00 the morning of March 15, before District Magistrate Judge Kevin Kimball.

The first big snow brings with it, the possibility of power outages. A line is down, in your neighborhood–

Probably not Ghostbusters for a power outage; but, the City of Ottawa asks you to call 785-229-3710 or 785-229-3750 to report outages. Ay information your provide may be helpful, such as a loud bang when power went out, a flash was noticed in a area or a tree limb across power lines.

When an outage occurs, electric personnel have to determine how widespread the affected area is. If only a small area is affected, crews are dispatched to search for and correct the issue. If an outage is widespread, crews begin by checking the primary distribution lines, then secondary distribution line and last, individual lines to customers. Until this is done, it is almost impossible to identify problems for individual customers and give an estimated time that power will be restored.

Don’t be discourages if you see electric crews passing your home during an outage. More than likely the crews are searching for the cause of the outage. When found, power will be restored to the neighborhood as quickly as possible.

The key is… patience. There are a lot of hardworking men and women out there, doing everything they can to get your power back on. Here’s a salute to all of them.

It’s Groundhog Day and Punxsutawney Phil arrived on schedule today in Gobblers Knob, Pennsylvania and unfortunately, saw his shadow. Here is the official proclamation from Phil:

Stupid varmint! The ceremony is televised live every year from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and the giant rodent attracts a lot of followers, attended by hundreds of people, sometimes thousands, from all around the world. As one famous meteorologist, Bill Murry, said in 1993:

All kidding aside, weird thing, Phil has been correct in the forecasts 50% of the time in the last 20 years. Better than many actual meteorologists.
