'Heritage Bazaar', explores the role of ethnic grocery shops in sustaining cultural identity.
This radio documentary takes off from our previous one titled 'Kitchen Stories' that delved into the homes of a few Cork citizens to understand what dinner time looks like for them.
In 'Heritage Bazaar' we invite the multi talented and Cork native, Daniel Heaphy to accept the challenge of making chai. Through the challenge, Daniel interviews various guests to explore the importance of having access to traditional ingredients and groceries and how this helps a person hold on to their cultural identity while living in a new country.
The documentary features interviews with Asad, owner of Asian Foods, Sravan Telu who moved to Ireland one year ago to study at MTU and Banu Rekha Balaji who has lived in Ireland for two decades, is an Occupational Therapist and founder of Therapix. The interviews were held on site at Asian Foods Cork and on North Main St.
Heritage Bazaar has been created with a cross border team with one of the team members, Mugdha Chemburkar Datay Co-Producer of Heritage Bazaar based in Brazil. Daniel Clancy is the Sound Recorder and Editor of the documentary and Music from Justin Grounds - both based in Ireland.
Joanna Dukkipati, founder Good Day Cork, received the Lord Mayor of Cork's Civic Award 2025 in recognition of cultural expression of migrant communities. The Heritage Bazaar documentary falls within this remit and also bridges majority communities in Ireland with the minorities through food memories.
Our radio documentary is created with generous support from CESCA & Cork City Partnership – SICAP.

'It's OK To Not Be Ok'is a documentary co-created by Good Day Cork and Deborah Oniah, a post graduate in trauma studies at UCC.
Deborah, together with three guests - Sibusisiwe Mhlope, Danielle McLaughlin and Sukhi Byrne - have an open and honest conversation about the continuing stigma and shame associated with mental health and whether we accurately assess our own mental health.
This group of women discuss and share what mental health means to them, both on an individual and a cultural level, the importance of naming what you are dealing with, how they gauge their own mental health and what tips and steps they take to maintain good mental health, including seeking and accepting help, be it from friends or through various types of therapy.
Danielle said, "Pretending uses up a lot of energy, energy that could be better spent on other things, like getting better." And, Sibusisiwe adds, “People must normalise listening without judgement and interruption.”
Deborah’s aim is “ to spread ‘awareness, awareness, awareness…” as “mental health is a human need…” She hopes this documentary will begin to change the narrative around mental health, especially in marginalized communities. Danielle adds, “It is in sharing the stories of our lives that we come closer to understanding what other people might be experiencing.”
Deborah also explains, “Everyone needs to get empowered. In this documentary you find many everyday tools for yourself and the people you care about and the best way to support them.” Sukhi commented, “When we normalise the reality of life’s journey - the highs and the lows - we learn that it is ok to not be ok.”
'It's OK To Not Be Ok'was created with support from Career Training Partnerships. Edited by Daniel Clancy and music by Justin Grounds.

How do you reimagine these spaces?
We had six people take the soapbox at the Wild Ones Salon. In this podcast, you will hear four of them live from the event.

Good Day Cork marks World Day of Tea & World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue & Development with the release of an audio documentary - 'Kitchen Stories'.
Our audio documentary 'Kitchen Stories' showcases the vibrant food culture in Ireland through the stories and experiences of how people cook and eat in their homes. Each of the featured people have a unique cultural identity and it is through exploring this that the listener discovers how many commonalities there are in the way different nationalities prepare, create and enjoy food.
Kitchen Stories is hosted by food and culture enthusiast Banu Rekha Balaji who is based in Cork. The documentary features four foodie people who have also made Cork their home. The guests include a newly married Indian-Irish couple, a pastry chef who grew up in France, an Australian frontline worker with Italian roots, and a poet from Zimbabwe who lives in Mallow after having lived in a Direct Provision centre.
‘Kitchen Stories’ is produced and published by Good Day Cork. The documentary has been created with support from MamaBear Foods, Ode to Earth & Orla McAndrew Catering. It was edited by Daniel Clancy with music by Justin Grounds.
Messages from our host & guests:
Host Banu Rekha says, "Kitchen stories is close to my heart. It’s not just food , but also about the nurturing the love and connection that we have with food. Speaking to these wonderful people about their kitchen stories has filled me with a warm fuzzy feeling of comfort - in their memories and narratives."
“You show your love through cooking, for your family and you show how much you love your family with the food that you make” says Occupational Therapist and Australian woman Yvonne Pennisi.
Nqobizitha Vella novelist & health-worker came from Zimbabwe and first lived in a Direct Provision centre. “I got to know about Ireland when I was in the Direct Provision system. In Direct Provision you have the whole world living in one room.” Nqobizitha says. “Where I used to stay we could cook for ourselves. The problem was buying the food. It’s not all the time that we could afford to cook our own food. But they did sometimes. You get to taste food from Albania, from Nigeria, from the Congo, I learnt a lot”
For French Pastry Chef Christine Girault cooking is about passion. “Food connects you so much. When you cook you don’t need any words. I live, breathe food all the time. When I see food...straight away my creativity takes over and I start to play.”
Good Day Cork brings you a new audio documentary 'Kitchen Stories' on 21st May - World Day of Tea & World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue & Development.
