In this heartfelt and enlightening episode of Love Lab MD, Dr. Kate welcomes back Dr. Marissa Caudill, aka The Parent Doctor. Dr. Marissa Caudill, a child psychiatrist and parenting coach, reflects on her journey in personal and relational growth, her transformative experiences, and her time at the Honeymoon 2.0 retreat with her husband of 14 years. Together, they delve into key lessons about love, self-discovery, and prioritizing marriage amid the chaos of life.

Key Highlights: 1. The Power of Saying Yes to Growth:

    • Dr. Marissa Caudill shared how she and her husband, both psychiatrists, decided to attend Honeymoon 2.0. Although it felt indulgent at first, the decision to prioritize their relationship proved invaluable. She noted that her husband’s unwavering support in saying “yes” to things that are important to her has been a cornerstone of their partnership.
    • She reflected on their shared experiences at personal growth events, such as Tony Robbins’ Date with Destiny, which laid the groundwork for a deeper connection and prepared them for the transformative work at Honeymoon 2.0.
  1. Key Takeaways from Honeymoon 2.0:

    • Love Languages Revisited: Dr. Marissa Caudill discovered that both she and her husband express love through acts of service but prefer to receive love through words of affirmation. This revelation helped them shift their interactions and become more intentional in meeting each other’s emotional needs.
    • Improved Communication: Practicing tools from the retreat allowed the couple to better navigate conflicts and understand when to vent versus problem-solve. Dr. Marissa Caudill shared how this new awareness prevented misunderstandings and strengthened their connection.
    • Erotic Love Languages: Learning about sensual and sexual energies deepened their understanding of intimacy, adding a playful and exploratory element to their relationship.
    • The Role of Pausing for Self-Reflection:

    • Dr. Marissa Caudill reflected on a pivotal moment during the pandemic when she realized that her happiness was her own responsibility. This shift in mindset, spurred by the Dickens Process at a Tony Robbins event, transformed her perspective on her marriage and life. She realized the importance of clearly communicating her needs and letting go of anger and resentment.

    • Balancing Parenthood and Marriage:

    • As a devoted mother, Dr. Marissa Caudill shared how she prepares her children for time apart when she and her husband attend retreats or trips. From scavenger hunts to hidden notes, she keeps their emotional connection strong, ensuring the kids understand the importance of nurturing a strong marital bond.

    • She emphasized that children benefit from seeing their parents invest in their relationship, creating a stable and loving environment.
    • Investing in Marriage:

    • Dr. Marissa Caudill called Honeymoon 2.0 the “best investment” they’ve ever made in their marriage. Beyond the immediate benefits, the retreat gave them tools and insights that continue to enrich their daily lives, enhancing their connection, family dynamics, and even professional pursuits.

    • The Ripple Effect of a Strong Marriage:

    • A secure and joyful relationship positively impacts all areas of life. Dr. Marissa Caudill shared how her renewed sense of marital harmony has allowed her to show up more fully in her role as a parent, coach, and entrepreneur, creating a foundation of support and love that extends to her entire family.

Dr. Marissa Caudill's Wisdom: * "I am responsible for my own happiness." Recognizing this truth helped her shift from blame to action, taking ownership of her emotional well-being and marital satisfaction. * Take time to pause. Whether through a retreat, a date night, or moments of quiet reflection, intentional time away from daily stressors fosters growth and clarity. * Keep growing. Even as experts in the field of psychiatry, Dr. Marissa Caudill and her husband continuously seek opportunities to deepen their relationship, proving that growth is a lifelong journey.

In this episode of Love Lab MD, Dr. Kate interviews Dr. Lara Hochman, a family medicine physician and founder of Happy Day Health, a boutique physician matchmaking agency. Known as the "Medical Matchmaker," Dr. Lara Hochman is passionate about physician well-being and matching doctors with private practices that allow them to avoid burnout and rediscover joy in medicine.

Key Highlights: 1. Dr. Lara Hochman Love Story:

* Lara shared her serendipitous and adorable love story with her husband, a psychiatrist, whom she met in college. Despite being shy at the time, she approached him after a series of coincidental encounters. Their connection grew from organic chemistry homework sessions into a 21-year partnership, including 16 years of marriage, two daughters, and a bustling household filled with pets.
* She reflected on how their relationship continues to evolve, with moments of "butterflies" still sparking after all these years, despite the ups and downs of life.
  1. Relationship Dynamics:

    • The couple practices intentional communication and prioritizes spending quality time together, including weekly date nights, which they view as essential for maintaining their connection.
    • Dr. Lara Hochman emphasized the importance of listening, validating each other's feelings, and focusing on the positives in a partner. While arguments happen, they aim to resolve them in ways that strengthen rather than weaken their bond.
    • Managing Chaos and Stress:

    • As a dual-physician household with active children and a growing number of pets, Dr. Lara Hochman admitted that chaos can sometimes strain their relationship. However, staying on the same page, involving their kids in family management, and openly communicating have been key to navigating life’s challenges.

    • She also spoke about adjusting expectations and accepting that things won’t always stay the same as they evolve over time.
    • The Creation of Happy Day Health:

    • Burned out by the lack of autonomy in traditional medicine, Dr. Lara Hochman left her practice in 2017. After taking time to recharge and explore new paths, she discovered a passion for helping physicians find better job opportunities that align with their values.

    • With encouragement from her husband, she turned her organic matchmaking efforts into a business, Happy Day Health, which helps physicians and private practices connect. She now advises doctors on finding fulfilling roles and works with practices to find the right candidates.
    • The Power of Taking a Pause:

    • During her career transition, Dr. Lara Hochman dedicated one day a week to herself, trying new activities and reflecting on her priorities. She emphasized the importance of creating pauses in life—even for just five minutes a day—to break the cycle of busyness and reconnect with yourself.

    • Wisdom for Listeners:

    • Dr. Lara Hochman encouraged listeners to practice flexibility, communicate openly, and take intentional time for self-care. Small changes, like a few minutes of quiet reflection or a focus on positive interactions, can lead to transformative growth in both personal and professional life.

Dr. Chrissy Guidry, after 4 years of medical school, completed 8 years of residency and fellowship training to become a Trauma Surgeon. She achieved double board certification in General Surgery and Critical Care Surgery. During her training, she often thought, "Once I get a job as a real doctor, I will be successful and then be happy." She believed that everything would be more fulfilling once she completed her training. However, a few years after finishing her training, she realized there was still something missing. She discovered that achieving happiness was a prerequisite for a successful career.

Dr. Guidry learned that pursuing happiness is an intentional practice. Through studying and making active changes to her daily habits, she now experiences a life of abundant happiness, which she views as the true success in life. She now teaches this philosophy to her colleagues, believing that tapping into the best version of themselves enhances their ability to "docere" (from the Latin word meaning "to teach" and the root of the word "doctor") in their medical practice. Meet Dr. Seema Desai, a former dentist turned success coach, residing in Austin, Texas, where she balances her roles as a wife and mother alongside her professional pursuits. Driven by a passion to empower outwardly successful leaders to find fulfillment from within, Seema's journey is rooted in breaking free from traditional definitions of success instilled by her hard-working Indian immigrant parents.

Raised to equate success with achieving societal benchmarks—becoming a doctor, earning well, and starting a family—Seema initially fulfilled these expectations, yet internally felt unfulfilled and stagnant. Despite her life appearing picture-perfect on social media, she sensed a profound misalignment with her true desires.

Recognizing this disparity propelled Seema towards a transformative shift. By delving into the core of her discontent, she began to cultivate a profound sense of inner peace. This newfound clarity not only enhanced her roles as a mother, wife, and professional but also opened doors to unprecedented opportunities that her previous mindset would have deemed impossible.

Her journey began with a fundamental shift in perspective, illuminating how her preconceived notions limited her capacity for genuine happiness and personal growth. Through this introspective process, Seema discovered a path to limitless and authentic happiness uniquely her own. Website: https://drseemadesai.com/

In this episode, Dr. Manish, shares the story of his relationship with his wife, Seema and how they have intentionally designed a relationship where they each have more than enough “free time”. From their first encounter, where Manish impulsively embraced Seema despite having never met her before, Manish knew she was special.

Dr. Desai reflects on the initial attraction, drawn by the alignment of their backgrounds and values. Although their chemistry was real, Manish admits that the early years of their marriage were marked by disagreements rooted in their differing family dynamics—Seema's reserved upbringing contrasted with Manish's more vocal background.

Trough introspection and mutual growth, they have navigated challenges such as Seema's post-partum depression and the pressures of their demanding schedules.

Together, they discovered the importance of prioritizing wellness and lifestyle over financial gain, finding joy in shared activities like workouts and walks. Ultimately, their story illustrates the power of love, authenticity, and the journey of self-discovery within a marriage, culminating in a symbolic helicopter ride representing their united journey through life's highs and lows.

This technique can get you unstuck.

Have you ever seen those older couples in action?…you know…the ones who have been married for 20 or 30 years. They are so in sync. They are in tune. They walk to the same cadence and communicate with the same lingo. This is not a coincidence. This is neuroplasticity at its finest. Through struggles and joys, these couples are in tune with each other’s needs and wants and do not even realize how much mirroring is actually taking place in their relationship because it becomes their way of living and loving.

Mirroring is a concept in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) that involves subtly matching the behavior, body language, and communication style of another person. When used effectively, mirroring can enhance your relationship with your spouse by fostering rapport, building trust, and creating a deeper sense of connection. Here's how mirroring can be beneficial and some tips to avoid potential pitfalls:

  1. Rapport building: Mirroring helps create a sense of familiarity and similarity between partners. By mirroring your spouse's nonverbal cues, such as posture, gestures, or facial expressions, you can establish a subconscious connection that promotes understanding and empathy.

  2. Communication enhancement: Mirroring also extends to verbal communication. By matching your spouse's language patterns, tone of voice, and even the speed of speech, you can enhance communication by establishing a more harmonious and comfortable conversation flow.

  3. Building trust: Mirroring can help build trust and a sense of validation. When you mirror your spouse, it shows that you are actively listening, understanding, and accepting their perspective. This can create an environment where both partners feel safe to express themselves openly and honestly.

It's important to distinguish mirroring from mimicking. While mirroring is about subtly aligning with your spouse's behavior and communication style, mimicking involves imitating them in a way that may seem insincere or mocking. Mimicking can be detrimental to a relationship, as it may lead to resentment or a lack of authenticity.

To avoid mirroring narcissism, where one partner excessively mirrors the other without maintaining their own identity, consider the following:

  1. Maintain individuality: Remember to maintain your own unique personality, opinions, and interests. Healthy mirroring should not entail losing yourself or compromising your values.

  2. Balance reciprocity: Mirroring should be a two-way street. Both partners should engage in mirroring behaviors, ensuring a balanced and equal exchange of understanding and connection.

  3. Adapt to change: As individuals grow and change over time, it's essential to adapt your mirroring techniques accordingly. Be open to new experiences, perspectives, and communication styles to keep the relationship dynamic and thriving.

Here are a few relationship hacks for building deeper connections and understanding beyond mirroring:

  1. Active listening: Practice active listening by giving your spouse your full attention, maintaining eye contact, and responding empathetically. This helps create an atmosphere of trust and understanding.

  2. Emotional intelligence: Develop emotional intelligence by being aware of your own emotions and understanding those of your spouse. This allows you to respond appropriately and empathetically to their needs.

  3. Quality time: Dedicate quality time to connect and engage in activities that both partners enjoy. This strengthens the bond and creates shared experiences.

  4. Express appreciation: Regularly express gratitude and appreciation for your spouse's efforts, qualities, and achievements. This fosters a positive and supportive environment.

  5. Foster open communication: Encourage open and honest communication by creating a safe space for your spouse to express their thoughts, concerns, and desires without judgment or criticism.

Remember, building a deeper connection and understanding in a relationship requires consistent effort, patience, and a willingness to grow together.

So apparently I make it look easy.

I have been asked by several mothers, physicians, and friends how I do it. Do what??? Make mothering and doctoring look easy? Here's the answer. The SECRET divulged. 🤪💕🤪💞 It's not easy, I never pretend it is, and I keep going. I mess up A LOT. And then I keep going. That's it. Period. I mess up a hella lot. For instance, take today for example. It’s my half admin day, so I take the kids to school, attend the parents club gathering, and jet off to an in person meeting where I left one of the necessary documents at home in another bag. I keep going. Next I pick two kids up from half day school, and jet back home to meet our nanny, so she can relieve me for a work teams meeting and coaching zoom call only to realize the teams work meeting had been scheduled an hour earlier than I thought. I keep going. I then finish up loose ends on some work projects before running out the door again to make a work out class only to get a text from my nanny that she can’t find the minivan keys. I keep going. I then cancel my work out class as I'm driving away ($15 penalty but who’s counting…it’s more about my missed glutes and thighs session and 40 minutes of back and forth traffic) as I speed (not really) back home to deliver the keys to our nanny so she can take my two youngest to swim lessons an hour late. The entire universe feels a bit thrown off. I keep going. Here I sit back in my office finding my focus again. One more zoom collaboration session. One more work teams meeting. One more work social outing. Total FOMO wathcing coach friends on social arrive in Dallas from all over the world for a coaching event I cannot attend. One more client to coach at 9pm. And then off to bed. I just keep going. Giving myself grace. Reminding myself to give everyone else grace. How do you make it look easy? I assure you, from the outside, you make it look easy too. I would genuinely love to know.

2023 UPDATED TRAVEL TIPS
Don’t let photos fool you. Traveling with any amount of littles is stressful which is why I updated my Traveling with Littles Tips. Don’t even mention that Cata did not even have a ticket 24 hours before the flight and executive decisions had to be made. TRAVELING WITH LITTLE TIPS 1. It is never about the destination. Always about the journey. I’ve found this to be deeply true. If we can enjoy the journey, the destination becomes wherever we are at all times. The destination never lasts forever, yet the journey is infinitely present. If we can imagine this, we can create it. 2. In the blink of an eye, emotions will fly. Notice how the face of the tiniest changes drastically from photo one to photo two. If we can accept this, chaos feels so much lighter. This is normal and expected. This is normal and expected. Repeat after me next time your toddler flings themselves on the ground, the other passenger gives you a look, or your preteen rolls their eyes. “This is normal and expected.” 3. Forgiveness & self-compassion are key. We may do things or say things we are not proud of while our littles are jumping out of their seats, touching the airport bathroom floors, and creating waterfalls of French fries and applesauce. The same goes for our spouse. As parents, we sometimes forget we are on the same team and experience fits of emotions while exchanging uncalculated words. This is normal. Accept it. Give yourself what you need in the moment. Forgive everyone. Move forward. 4. GIVE EVERYONE THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT! We never know what may have happened to them earlier that day or week. We do not know the hardships they carry nor the emotions they feel. If you can’t do this, come talk to me. 5. Carry bags of skittles to hand out to all who help you along the way. The airline staff will love you. Friendships will be made.

How to Manage Emotional Flooding in your Marriage

In 3 simple steps (or 5 if you count the 1.5 and 2.5 separately)

  1. Be aware that you indeed are experiencing emotional flooding. What is emotional flooding? It’s when your amygdala hijacks your frontal lobes and you cannot think clearly. If you react during this 20-minute period of flooding, you will likely say, or do something you regret. Awareness is KEY.

1.5 Label your emotions. This is sometimes enough to take the edge off your big emotions which may be erupting and wanting to be heard and seen!

  1. Allow the emotion. So much more to be said here.

2.5 Shift the focus. For at LEAST 20 minutes, get your mind off the conversation that led to the flooding. For 20 minutes, no ruminating allowed. Listen to the full episode for some examples.

  1. Come back to the conversation only when ready. Once you find your calm or your center. Once you can be curious or loving. If you can’t get here, stay on steps 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5. This is super duper important. Maybe you don’t even need to go back to the conversation. This is up to you. Listen to episode 113 for more depth on these tips!

SHOWNOTES: Dr. Liz Treynor is a pathologist by day and mental health warrior by night— or really just a human at all times, trying to normalize discussions about mental health among women physicians. Meeting her in Tahiti and chatting it up in the airport on our way to Bora Bora as part of the Empowering Women Physicians Coaching program (which ALL physicians need to experience) solidified my love for this magnificent ball of energy! Liz’s passionate soul is infectious. I feel like she could be the next President of the USA although during our interview, her hubby Dr. Chako said they would try to divulge just enough information to disqualify them from the race!!!! LOL These two are a HOOT!!! They talk about their ex’s in a very honest, affectionate, and functional way. This is better than the last stand-up comedy show I saw by Adam Sandler! I am not kidding!!! Dr. Treynor gives us her best sex tips and especially as it relates to mental health; however, the emotional depth this couple takes us to in under one hour is mind blowing. This is a MUST LISTEN!!!!! I KNEW it needed to be episode 100!!!! This is definitely a celebration of love, life, and life-long learning. I cannot thank Dr. Liz and Dr. Chako enough for the vulnerability and love they poured forth. Dr. Vertrees realized that medical school and residency helped her become a great technical surgeon, but she soon realized that there were several career aspects that residency did not cover. She trained in the military, and once her commitment was up she realized she had no idea how to find a job, negotiate her contract, or code notes and cases. She created the BOSS Business of Surgery Series as a way to address those topics, because if she needed to know it, others probably needed to as well.

Always passionate about real estate, David was seeking an asset class that would provide “high monthly cash flows” that would quickly propel him towards financial independence. David continues to learn and grow, always wanting to be on the cutting edge of the short term rental industry. Laura has found her experience with her daughter to further her passion in the field of sonography with a goal of giving the highest of care to each patient and their growing families.

WHAT YOU WILL DISCOVER IN THIS EPISODE

Medicine:

  • How she found out her daughter had no immune system

  • Why she could not breast feed her baby
  • Why the treatment for SCID was not straightforward
  • Why they decided not to wait for a thymus

Motherhood:

  • Why she decided to take a leave from fetal sonography
  • Why abnormal results may not mean the worst thing
  • A Mother’s job is to worry

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM LAURA HALL

  1. Before telling bad news to your patient, imagine having no idea what half the words out of your own mouth mean...and getting slapped in the face with FEAR. How you think a patient should handle this? Sometimes as physicians we get so used to telling our patients about some new disease, we forget their life is flashing before their eyes. They don’t know what we know. They are scared. They want all the answers. Instead of becoming annoyed that they don’t understand, they won’t accept a diagnosis, or they won’t do what we recommend, try turning toward self-compassion.
  2. There is a lot of "We don’t know in medicine." Medicine is not just a science. It is also an art. We must remember that patients are not aware of how much we actually do not know and how much time a diagnosis can actually take to make. Understanding that our patients may be sad, angry, or upset is key. Their feelings are not an attack on who we are or our profession. Just accepting this may is the first step. Allow your patients to be angry, irritated, sad and even confused. This is all normal.
    1. Drop the ego.
    2. Apologize.
    3. Make up!
    4. Love unconditionally.
  3. We may get into arguments and say choice words to our hunny. Can we recover quickly?

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • Do I want all the control of things I have no control over?
  • Do I allow my patients to have all the feelings?
  • Am I good at letting go of my ego?
  • How do I recover after an argument with my spouse?

It’s time! We’ve finally gotten to sit back down and have an Alpha Female discussion. Spring is in the air and with it will come extremely LONG days for Craig so we knew we had to get it in. Listen as he shares what’s going on down on the farm and we chat about our family updates.
Corn is up in prices and we’ve been preparing the fields and the equipment to get the highest yield. Craig shares what that looks like as we try to record in a house full of needy kids!
He’s also taken up day trading and watching a ton of financial shows. His interest has been piqued and he’s been reading and learning and watching which is why he hasn’t actually done much investing yet. But it’s fun to hear him talk about it.
The first thing Craig doesn’t know… I want to get rid of these kittens. There’s definitely more but after my Grandma passed away we split up her cats and the older cats are just so much more manageable. Also, I’m getting my ears pierced again!
Craig and I have so much fun doing these episodes and giving you a peek into our lives and our family. We hope you enjoy it today!

“When you are married to an alpha female, remember the mantra, it’s no big deal.” Errin and Craig Weisman

In this episode:
[04:19] Let's start by listening to what's happening down on the farm with Craig.
[07:00] Craig shares his interest in day trading.
[09:33] Let’s talk about things Craig doesn’t know.
[13:02] Craig’s thoughts on all the things he doesn’t know.

[18:41] His thoughts on the “married to an alpha female” segment.

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM DR. DAVID YEH

  1. The definition of wealth can be simple. I can mean the amount of money you need to live on for the rest of your life. It doesn’t need to mean something completely out of reach….unattainable, multiple luxurious vacations a year, or a closet full of exquisite bags….it just needs to be enough for you to live. So take that for what it’s worth and start building your wealth
  2. The worst thing that can happen as an investor is to make a lot of money quickly which leads to arrogance and overconfidence. Learn to make systems so emotions will not sabotage!
  3. Being equal in your marriage DOES NOT MEAN being the SAME. There is just no such thing, so we might as well stop comparing ourselves to our spouses or anyone else.

  • How he and his wife make time for each other with 5 (now 6) children

Money:

  • How focusing on values decreases financial disagreements

  • How he does bedtime with 5 (now 6) children

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM DR PHIL BOUCHER

  1. Know when to place the needs of your spouse or children above your own and when to prioritize your own self care. This is an important distinction that often does not come naturally. We learn as we go. How do I want to make my families’ life better in this situation? Another good question to ask yourself at the moment I will borrow from my dear friends Dr. Alexandra Stockwell who recently came to speak with my Women Physicians coaching group. She offers to ask ourselves, what does everyone in this family need right now, including me?
    1. Example: Dinner, TV, bedtime, alone time, reconnection time
    2. When I am overwhelmed, angry, and victimize myself, I have learned that all I need is often 10-15 minutes to reset...take a shower, think about why I am really feeling the way I feel and a moment to take ownership for my feelings instead of blaming them on someone else.
  2. Do not wait for someone else to make your life more efficient. If you crave efficiency and you notice wasted time at work, suggest a solution. Remember not to focus on the problem as in any negotiation. Present two best options to your group. If neither option is adopted, create one for yourself. Templates...a scribe, get creative, find alternative methods. This won’t happen overnight.
    1. Make a list of your shared values
    2. Family Time
    3. Home
    4. Experiences
    5. Material Items
    6. Charity
    7. Notice if your shared values support increased spending habits...if so figure out how to increase your salary.
    8. Evaluate what your variables can be shifted in your home to help align
    9. What variables can I shift to support my spending habits?
  3. Create shared values with your spouse.
    1. A Dream Home
    2. The Headboard
    3. The Luxury Car
  4. Examples: Time with family on weekends, annual couple only vacations, Grandparents

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • Do I have a good balance between self care and self sacrifice?
  • What can I delegate in my life?
  • How can my spouse and I create more shared visions?
  • Do my values support my spending habits?

  • Why Disha transformed her traditional Indian money mindset during her second maternity leave

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM DR DISHA SPATH

  1. If you are in consumer debt, use the debt snowball principle to climb out of debt and learn how to manage money without being too overwhelmed. Paying off the smallest bill can provide motivation and build up momentum to keep going.
  2. Cut down the fixed costs (phone plans-switching carriers, cancel unused subscriptions, change grocery stores-from Expensive to Aldi & Walmart, downsize from a big house to renting a smaller place, moving closer to grandparents to help with childcare costs.
  3. Raise your children without a silver spoon to teach them to know the importance of money and better equip them to be independent later in life.
  4. Paying off student loans may or may not be your best financial decision. Although this was the right decision for her, she emphasizes that this is not a one size fits all answer. You have to look at your unique circumstances. Do you work for a public or private institution? What is your debt to income ratio? How do you feel about debt? Is it causing you anxiety or fear?

Culture:

  • How chicken feet and shark fin soup won the approval of her hubby’s grandmother
  • How food can win the heart of others when you do not speak the same language

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM DR. KAROLYN LEE

  1. If you go to Disney with your fiance and expect to get engaged, you may not enjoy the day as much especially if you are going to be expecting a ring at every corner.
  2. Sometimes you need to hear advice from the right people before you take action.

  • How letting each other to do things separately builds trust

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM Drs. May & Tim Hindmarsh

  1. In a successful marriage, the relationship is often bigger than either person.
  2. “God tells us to love our enemies, but I am not going to marry them.” Although love is elevating, marriage is not ONLY based on love.
  3. The gravity with which a relationship orbits is trust. Although I do not always agree with my spouse, do I trust them 100%.
  4. It is getting through the hardships that make or break a relationship. The easy stuff...the fun stuff...the honeymoon stuff does not matter. We are ALL good at supporting our spouse through good times. It becomes more difficult to be supportive when the bad times roll in.

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • Was I born at an early age??? (just kidding)
  • How do I model constructive conflict?
  • Where am I looking for happiness?
  • Could it be more freeing to stop looking for happiness and be okay with not being happy all the time?

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM Dr. Carrie Reynolds

  1. When you think someone has “ghosted” you, think again.
  2. Anyone can become a real estate agent. It’s what you do with the knowledge and how you work with a team that will make the difference. Same thing in marriage or in your job.
  3. How the “never stop learning” mentality has helped her
  4. Why is making an offer not just about the numbers? Or the price... It’s about asking the seller What do they need??? Negotiating...is not about what you want….it is about what you can give...what you can bring to the table.

  • How accepting “what is” has enhanced her life

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM Dr. Jessie Mahoney

  1. When feeling stuck, Jessie loves to ask herself two questions:
    • What would love do?
    • What would compassion do? Love would let people show up exactly as they are. Sometimes we cannot fix things. Most of the time the other person needs to do the fixing and we can just love and have compassion. Having more compassion for herself would also allow her to grow from any situation in life regardless if other people would see it as a failure or argument or strain….
  2. The grass is greener where you water it!!!!! It is not necessarily better somewhere else.
  3. Boundaries come from love.
  4. We spend a year planning our wedding and no time planning our marriage.

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • What would love do?
  • What would compassion for me do?
  • What would compassion for my spouse do?
  • How can I be thoughtful about my money?

WHAT YOU WILL DISCOVER IN THIS EPISODE

Medicine:

  • When a spouse thinks “being on-call” is something we do for ourselves
  • Going through divorce her last year of residency
  • Her Mother’s anti-western-medicine beliefs and how this has affected their relationship
  • Why she now “skips into work” to see her patients

Marriage:

  • Redefining “her type” and her definition of husband potential
  • Falling in love with her personal trainer
  • Knowing when to leave and when to stay

Money:

  • Her new 2021 goal is to tackle personal finance!

Renewal:

  • How her personal trainer Eric rescued her, his persistence, and their magical kiss
  • Growing through the differences she had with her mother
  • Choosing growth discomfort over stuck discomfort

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM Dr. Milene Argo

  1. Sometimes we fall in love with someone we would never expect. If we are constantly looking for a certain type of person, we may miss the love of our life directly in front of our eyes AND maybe they are ALREADY married to us!
  2. Asking ourselves, “Why would she/he say this to me?” Is NOT a helpful question. Instead, next time our spouse, mother-in-law, or friend says words to us, let’s ask ourselves instead, “What do I want to make that mean?”
  3. Making assumptions about what people are thinking is dangerous. AND then making assumptions about how other people are feeling is also dangerous! AND THEN making assumptions that other people's thoughts and feelings mean something about us is the MOST dangerous of all!!!! So next time we catch ourselves in this funny mind drama, let’s ask what we would rather spend our time and energy focusing on….someone else’s thoughts and feelings over which we have no control, or our own?

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • How do I tell my love story? Is it a fairy tale or a horror story?
  • Do I allow myself to love me every day?
  • Do I give myself credit for how far I’ve come?
  • What are my main sources of motivation?
  • Am I choosing the discomfort of growth or the discomfort of being stuck?

  • Why the people you surround yourself will help you rise to the occasion
  • What gave her the motivation and encouragement to create the virtual community she envisioned

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM RUPA

  1. Being a business owner could be the best financial opportunity for you and your family. Not only does this impact your finances if you set up a smart financial plan, but this also allows you to have a more flexible family life. Keep in mind, these opportunities do not arise at the most comfortable times.
  2. Surround yourself with people who lift you up. Instead of telling yourself, I can’t do this, you will start saying “Why can’t I do this?”
  3. You will find where you fit. “Never underestimate the power of a community of women who collaborate instead of competing.” The motto of her attending lounge. How this inspires Rupa on a daily basis.
  4. Hiring a cook and housekeeper is cheaper than a divorce attorney
  5. Do not let fear deter you from what you can truly achieve

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • How honest am I about what I want?
  • Where do I go for inspiration on a daily basis?
  • What are some more systems I can put into place in my household to avoid contention with my spouse?
  • Am I open to uncomfortable opportunities?
  • Do I have faith in myself?

WHAT YOU WILL DISCOVER IN THIS EPISODE

Medicine:

  • When she knew she wanted to be a physician
  • How her time in the spent hospital during residency affected her first marriage
  • Having a spouse who understands being “on-call”

Marriage:

  • Meeting on Match.com and a first date at Starbucks
  • Falling in love with a generous heart
  • Her thoughts when the marriage counselor told her SHE had things to work on

Money:

  • How her spouse and her views on money are drastically different
  • The ultimatum she gave her fiance regarding her financial goals

Divorce:

  • Why the SAME premarital counseling questions she never completed during her first marriage, she did on her second marriage
  • Getting married in 20s after medical school because “this is what you do”
  • The biggest challenge in her first marriage
  • The difference between focusing on oneself versus the ex during divorce

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM TRINA

  1. When we think we are going to marriage counseling for our spouse (and not ourselves), things will NOT get better. We all have things to work on, so let us focus only on working on what we can control….OURSELVES. What to find happiness, love, and appreciation in your marriage, find it on your own first.
  2. Trina tells us NOT to ever feel stuck in a terrible relationship. If you can find joy and happiness on your own and feel constantly stuck in a horrible situation, reevaluate your reasons for staying. If the two of you have truly grown apart or were never right for each other in the first place, why stay in an unhealthy environment? Remaining in a terrible relationship (after working on oneself) is not more comfortable than leaving which may seem very uncomfortable. Which hurts more? Which has the potential to add more discomfort….staying in silence, resentment, or venturing out alone into the unknown….into a new world of possibilities. This being said, don’t leave in order to find happiness. Find happiness in yourself first...once you have found that, if the relationship in itself is lacking, give yourself permission to start from scratch
  3. Although divorce is NEVER fun, there is life after divorce! Going through a divorce is like going through a period grief. It is a loss even if YOU are the one who chose to leave, but it can still be so much better on the other end after you allow yourself to heal. Shifting the focus onto healing yourself and away from making ex feel bad or regret their actions or inactions will cause the pain to subside at a more manageable level. Focus on healing.

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • Do I have self-confidence? Do I look to my partner for confidence?
  • What is the difference between self-confidence and confidence?
  • Where do I go to find happiness? Inside myself or in my relationships?
  • Is it better for me to stay or to go?
  • Do I understand the money mindset of my spouse? If our views on money differ, how can I better understand their story?
  • If and when I ever say goodbye to someone I have been in a relationship with, where is my focus on me or on them? On healing myself or on hurting them?

  • Meeting for the first time in anatomy lab
  • What it was like searching for a job in the same field
  • Why Sanjay says “It really does get better” for the trainees

Marriage:

  • How to maintain open lines of communication while keeping judgment out of it
  • Why learning how to fight with each other is key
  • How Sanjay unknowingly spread the bread crumbs for Matt before the proposal

Money:

  • How they maximized their travel dollars as residents
  • How they handled the transition of income from residency to attending
  • The differences between how they grew up and how they viewed their increase in salary

Surrogacy:

  • The “hurry up and wait” process
  • What the interview process for surrogacy looks like
  • Keeping in contact with the surrogate
  • The mental energy involved in planning to have a surrogate
  • What the relationship with their surrogate might look like after the birth

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM MATT AND SANJAY

  1. We can always improve how we fight with our spouse. What we say and what our spouse hears may be significantly different. So let us slow down the argument. Figure out what our partner is hearing rather than continuing to push our side of the argument. Sanjay also says to Keep judgment to ourselves and listen to what our partner is hearing. Keep an open mind and approach it from how can I show up as the best version of myself in this situation.
  2. If you are a trainee listening know that “It really does get better.” All those feelings of inadequacy and questions like “do I belong?” , “why am I doing this?”, and “is this really what I want to do for the rest of my life?” are NORMAL!!!!! A lot of trainees think these thoughts yet may not be expressing them out loud. I would like to add if you feel this way now, reach out to someone you can confide in. A mentor or close friend. We are not alone, my friends.
  3. Sanjay gave us a beautiful example of how we can all learn to be more responsible with money. Observe. Learn from those around you. He watched a close family member make more money than he could ever imagine and then lose it. Sanjay walks away from this with foresight and the determination to start planning for his retirement immediately after training if not during it. He could have chosen to perpetuate this cycle...done what those before him did….but he has decided to take control of his finances and prepare his family What can you learn from those around you?

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • How have I grown with my partner over the years?
  • How has my love for my partner evolved over time?
  • How has being with my partner during the pandemic been better than if I were to have been alone?
  • Am I spending my income on things that bring me joy?

  • Why we need to all have an emergency fund

Grief:

  • Why accept the feelings during grieving
  • How anger and guilt can become poisons
  • Why forgiveness matters and how forgiving is so powerful

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM THE LARSONS

  1. Loss and grief are universal. We all experience some sort of loss and grief at some point in our lives. Whether we are going through the loss of a young child, an older child, a parent, or a spouse, it hurts. It is absolutely painful. It just feels wrong. There is no sense in comparing which experience or which loss is worse. We are all on our own journey and that is okay. We can still go through our own journey alongside the support and companionship of others. No need to compare. Just accept that it is hard. Be aware that this is normal.
  2. If we cannot forgive others, we have often not forgiven ourselves.
  3. Sometimes what is right for us is not right for our spouse. Our answers do not have to be everyone’s answers. This is normal. Once you accept this and learn to just be present and supportive in whatever way is needed, the pain may worsen.
  4. Telling our children they are enough.

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • Do I sincerely ask for forgiveness when it truly matters?
  • How can I forgive myself when I need compassion and grace?
  • How do I process grief?
  • What does my emergency fund look like?

  • Her journey through multiple miscarriages, IUI, IVF,
  • What it means to “have my own back” during her fertility journey
  • Discovering physician empowerment
  • What moving through pain looks like to Maneesha

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM DR MANEESHA AHLUWALIA

  1. Being excited about pregnancy does not make the pain any worse during a miscarriage. It is still painful. It was always going to be as painful. Allowing the emotion of excitement during the initial phases of the pregnancy journey does make it MORE painful than it would have otherwise been without the excitement. Avoiding the pain forever is impossible. Feeling the pain and moving through the pain is the goal.
  2. We are not victims of what happens in life. Every decision, every path, every emotion we experience is a choice. Doctors may say funny things. Friends may say odd things. Nurses, family, and coworkers may say strange things. They often just want to say something, but do not know what to say? Why? Because everyone needs to hear different things. So, it does not matter what people say. Do not be a victim of the words or actions of others. We can choose how we interpret the words of others. We have the power to choose what to hear.
  3. When someone in our life may be experiencing miscarriage, fertility issues, or child loss, these are things we can say: I am here for you. I am listening to you. You get to think what you are thinking. You get to feel what you are feeling. We can talk about it or we do not need talk about it.

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • How do I stay curious in my marriage or relationship?
  • How can I stop being a victim of other people’s words?
  • Am I telling myself that I am doing enough today?
  • How can I be more comfortable in my own skin today?
  • Do I fear getting too excited in my journey because I fear disappointment and failure?

  • Her love-hate relationship with medicine
  • Avoiding asking questions about maternity leave on the job trail.

Marriage:

  • How she and Dan continued to choose each other over and over again
  • How we can create change for the better in medicine

Fertility:

  • Forgiving medicine and her career path during fertility challenges
  • When these conversations do not happen during medical education
  • Kate’s initial confusion when Dan’s thoughts were different from hers during her roller coaster of emotions

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM DR. KATE HAPPOCK

  1. How to create change in medicine. Especially when it comes to maternity leave, breastfeeding, parental obligations, work-life integration…. Starts with small conversations and supporting our colleagues. Let us be the cheerleader for our fellow physicians. Let us build each other up. Let us check on each other. Let us NOT engage in conversations that focus on degrading each other as those rarely build anything construction and definitely do not help our patients or health care in general If it is the change we want, regardless if it is for our patients, for our staff, or for our fellow physician colleagues, we can start by focusing on all the small things we can do each day. Daily conversations, compassion, and support.
  2. Our worth as physicians is not tied to how many hours we work each day or how many days a week we spend in the hospital or in the clinic. We are ALL high achievers, so stop judging, stop shaming, and start valuing each minute, each moment we care for patients, for ourselves, our for our families.
  3. When our spouse has different feelings from us about any life circumstance, this does NOT minimize ours and vice versa. We are each allowed to have our own thoughts about everything. We are each on our own journey. I distinctly remember the first year Victor and I were trying to get pregnant and each time I got my period I would cry and he would not and I honestly did NOT understand how he was not in pain and sadness like I was. I did not understand then what now. I truly appreciate Dr. Hoppock’s wisdom when it comes to allowing these differences in emotions that will inevitably arrive along the journey of life.

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • Am I choosing love every day?
  • How do I value my worth as a physician?
  • How can I accept the differences between my experience and my spouse’s experiences during the same journey?
  • How do I define the story of my life?
  • How can I have more self-compassion for myself?

Intimacy:

  • Why it is important to remember what drew you to your spouse

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM DR. ALEXANDRA STOCKWELL

  1. Every interaction or non-interaction between our spouse and us is either moving us towards connection or driving us away from connection. Enhance every moment in order to foster more love and this will result in a more intimate relationship.
  2. Be authentic. Hiding or walking on eggshells does not lead to connection. Figure out a way to regain friendship and love and if WE cannot do this on our own, maybe it is time to consider seeking help.
  3. Discovering what the foundation of our relationship with our spouse is may draw us closer to them and foster more connection. What is it? For Dr. Stockwell, she took us on her journey of their devotion to each other’s personal growth. Imagine how our relationship could enter the next level if we invited this concept into our lives and relationships.

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • How to communicate in bed
  • Why acknowledging a partner's emotions are key
  • Why assuming a spouse has the best intentions works
  • What natural avoidance is
  • Why pelvic pain may cause guilt, shame, & confusion

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM Dr. MELANIE MODJOROS

  1. Take responsibility for every emotion regarding love and intimacy. We have the power to make things better or worse. If we feel stuck and are not actively working towards making things, better, chances are they may be getting worse. Let us not be afraid to talk openly about our feelings with our partner using I statements while fully clothed. This may be hard and uncomfortable and that is okay. If unsure where to start, seek help from a professional.
  2. The biggest determining factor for wanting to have sex again is the feelings we have at the end of the last sexual encounter.
  3. People always say, “Sex was so easy when we were young and it was never scheduled.”, the truth is, it usually WAS scheduled, we just didn’t think of it that way because the words “SEX DATE” were not on our google calendar. We usually just got dolled up or manned up, shaved our legs or face, and went out on a Friday night or Saturday night date! It is OKAY to schedule sex….call it anything….cocktail night, cuddle night, snuggle puppy party time as one of my dear friends calls it.

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • Do I take responsibility for my feelings?
  • Do I communicate what I want in bed and why?
  • Do I assume my partner has the best intentions at heart?
  • Do I believe in any sex myths such as “Men always want sex” or “A man’s erection equals his attraction to me?” If so, why?
  • Would scheduling sex be helpful for my marriage?
  • Do I enjoy sex?
  • Does my spouse enjoy sex?
  • How can we enhance our sex life?

  • How silence can be hurtful

Grieving:

  • Never stop praying
  • Feeling defeated and abandoned, yet knowing, “All I know is you exist”
  • Realizing that feeling debilitated for days is okay

TAKE HOME POINTS FROM THE SCHELLERS

  1. If you have faith, there will be no suffering without purpose.
  2. Worry only takes away from the minutes you have in the present time. When we spend our time worrying or anxious over whatever small or huge thing we are going through in life, it is important to remember, we are choosing worry over any other emotion which could be available to us in that moment.
  3. Be good to yourself. Be good to the people around you. It’s Grace during times of suffering and difficulty that is so important. It’s a season. It will not last forever.
  4. Plan for the worst and hope for the best. Said like a TURE Pediatric Emergency Physician. If you plan for the worst, you can handle ANYTHING. Yet if you hope for the BEST, you always maintain the ability to keep your mind somewhere peaceful.

WALK AWAY ASKING YOURSELF

  • When it comes to raising or caring for my children, how control am I?
  • What could I be choosing to do with my mental space, instead of worrying?
  • Do I ask for space when I need it? How can I do this more often?
  • What helps me get through difficult times? Is it faith, love, my spouse, a schedule?
  • When I am in uncomfortable situations, particularly one of suffering or pain for someone else, how can I start the dialogue?
  • Can I see the joy through my suffering?

What does marital interdependence mean to you and what does it take to achieve it and maintain it? In other words, what makes a successful marriage and how does it last?

First let’s talk about what does not make a successful marriage.

Blame

Shame

Dependency

Relationships are not an emotional vending machine. We cannot pick and choose what we want our partner to feed us and how this will make us feel. If we want to be happy, we must first CHOOSE to be happy.

If we aim to mold or change our partner, we set ourselves up for relationship havoc.

So what makes a successful marriage?

A relationship requires trust, individual happiness and shared goals.

Your spouse’s only job is to be loved by you. Drop the expectations. Throw away the manual and exist from a place of love and support.

Love is not a fairytale or the perfect instagram photo. Love is failing and failing again and continuing to communicate, listen and hold space. Love is real life. Love has ups and downs and is rarely if ever 50/50.

Relationships take time, attention and patience. Not everyday or every moment will be magical, but everyday does have the potential to provide growth and bonding as long as you vow to unconditionally love.

WHAT YOU WILL DISCOVER

  • What makes a successful marriage
  • How highly successful couples make their relationship work
  • Why feeling like a failure is normal and part of the journey
  • Why dropping expectations could save your marriage
  • What “your spouse’s only job is to be loved by you” means
  • How to exist as a more supportive and loving partner in your relationship

Hi, friends! I'm Kate. With millions of podcasts on the air, you chose to stop by here. For that, I am grateful. I'd be even more appreciative if you subscribed to the show so you can hear more of it, but first, let me mention a bit about what you'll hear here.

In this podcast, we will focus on creating marital interdependence and financial independence. In this space, we will examine what makes a strong relationship and what it takes to become financially independent with your spouse.

After each episode, I will invite you to ask yourself, “what small tweaks can I make today that will create a huge and lasting impact in my relationship with my spouse and my bank account?’’

We believe there is enough joy, love, and wealth in this world for everyone. It just takes determination, desire, and an open mind and heart to find it and take it.
