Listen to stories and experiences from different people in my community as we try to break down barriers and ideologies associated with Mental Health. I believe that Pacific people in the community have a lot to offer and there is a lot to be learnt from their stories and experiences.
What is upppp!!! Finally worked up the courage to do a brand new episode and kick off season 3 of the Keep It Simple Podcast.
In this episode, my wife an I decided to do an episode together, but we let the "PEOPLE" decide on what we would talk about, and shout out to my guy, day 1 gunner MATT MANI for the awesome topic which is Mothers Day, so we dedicate this topic to all the mothers, hopeful mothers and all the mothers gone before.
Topic for this episode was "Do Cook Islanders Have A Drinking Problem", featuring the usual suspects, myself, Roto, Nanz and introducing the brother Big Jase. Listen up, have a laugh and enjoy the vibes lessssgoooo
This little gem right here represents a little pet project I had on the side which was, get a group together, jump on the podcast and talk some stuff. I was fortunate enough that I had my guy and my test dummy Roto Makara agree to jump on and some how we managed to rope Jasmine Nicholas into jumping on as well. In my opinion not a bad first episode, this was my first time jumping on to a live, a live podcast, the video is on Youtube somewhere and this is the audio for your listening pleasure.
Our first podcast together went so well that we decided to run it back a second time. For this episode I brought my wife back onto the podcast and we just sat and talked like normal people for once instead of trying to jump down each others throats lol. To all you newly weds have a listen to our first episode together, then listen to this one and tell me, can you feel the love lol
I had the honour and the pleasure of getting two people on the podcast for this episode, two people who have had a massive impact on my life since I moved over to Melbourne which is Rev. Maurice Hioe and his lovely wife Tracy Hioe. We took a trip down memory looking back at our lives before Maurice and Tracy accepted the calling to become Ministers and sharing the gospel, and how they had to adapt, change and grow in faith to be who God has called them to be.
Tigers Fans STAND UP!!!! For this episode I chat to a former Richmond Tigers draftee/player in Piva Wright, who at the time was a work colleague of mine. We go through what it was like being a Samoan and playing AFL and his journey to make it into the pros. Ever the humble guy, if youre a youngen and youre aspiring to make it in the big times, give this a listen, you just might get some golden nuggets out of it
This episode was definetly one of the funnier ones I had done due to the guest I had jump on one of the sisters who also has her own podcast called "Te Vahine Nei" on Spotify also Polohu Ruapene Abela. This was more just 2 people catching up after awhile because COVID and this was an awesome catch up, glad I got this one recoreded and Im sure you will enjoy it too.
I took abit of time off which i explain in the podcast lol so this episode represents me getting back into the swing of the things and diving back into becoming a Podcaster lol still not making any money off this
For this episode I had my first international guest jump on the podcast, none other than my younger sister Maggie Nanai. We had a bit of a yarn about what shes up to in NZ, what it was like for us growing up and what the plans are for the future. Good little insight into my sibling bond with my sister lol
This was one of my fave episodes to date in terms of podcasting and I got to do this one with one of the brothers amd cousins CHEVVY, aka Piriho Abela. I'd known this guy since moving to Melbourne due to the circle of brothers I hung around with at the time and he was one of the youngsters back then, musically gifted and making moves in the music scene here in Melbourne. We talk about him and his journey so far.....
This episode was off the back of changes in the "lockdown" rules here in Victoria during COVID and at the time, the stats that were going around in regards to Mental Health and Suicide due to being in lockdown and not being able to socialise due to COVID. This was a bit of a reality check for mself as I was one of the fortunate ones who was still able to work and provide for my family which also meant that I was out of home quite alot due to the nature of my work at the time.
In this episode I share a story from my childhood when i was a lil kid on the island of Mauke. This was in acknowledgement of Cook Islands language week at the time and I share my thoughts of COVID also during that period. Looking back now, and just hearing myself again, daaam I cant believe I was feeling that way and thinking that way. Glad to know that Im still here and trying to make the most of things lol.
In this episode I speak to a real close friend/cousin/brother of mine, the one and only Roto Makara. During this episode we were deep into lockdowns here in Melbourne due to COVID and were adjusting to the new so called "Norm". We share our experiences on how COVID is affecting us, and take a lilttle walk down memory lane as we revisit our childhood and what it was like for us growing up in the islands, to leaving Rarotonga, and our paths crossing here in Melbourne.
Whats going on and welcome to episode 3. In this episode I reach out to a fellow Cook Islander/Mauken living here in Melbourne. We spend the next talking about Mauke, what it was like back in the day and how times have changed lol. Good catch up with the bro Will Elika.
For this episode I figured Id give my wife her hour of fame lol and put her on the podcast. Second episode in and already I was getting people on, trying diffent things. This episode opened my eyes to a different side of my wife that I hadnt seen before, and just seeing how vulnarable she was sharing her story and sharing this piece of her with me.
Introductions - in this episode I talk about myself, who I am and the whole purpose of starting podcast. To think this all started in 2019 right in the mix of COVID. Kinda a surreal moment listening back to myself and thinking maaan this guy speaking now is not who I am at the moment lol. id like to think Im a lilttle bit wiser and more mature than the guy who started this podcast way back then.
Hello Hello.... mannnn its been awhile hahahah well tonight seemed like a good night to bring the gears out and record a poddy. and what better way to do it than do it with my wife and a special guest!!!! Not a properly planned out episode but who cares, SEND IT and see what happens :) hope you enjoy it lessshhhhhhgooooo
Hello Hello and welcome to another Episode of "Checking In With The Brothers" podcast. In this episode we ask the question - Do We Have A Drinking Problem? This episode was inspired by an article which states that "Cook Islanders drink the most amount of alcohol per capita". We figured it'd be a good discussion topic to speak about as alcohol consumption is rarely spoken about except when we say "lets have a drink or bring a box". In this episode we share a few personal alcohol related stories and give our insight on whether or not WE have a drinking problem.
Sit back, listen and enjoy as we display our talents of not only being great podcast host, but that we are also gifted musicians lol, well agree to disagree.

Kia Orana and welcome to the first episode of "Checking In With The Bros Podcast". This is a little side venture that I decided to get up and running having thought about it for a few months. With this little side venture I figured it would be cool to get a few like minded people together in a "safe space" to talk about topics that are still considered taboo in our culture.
With our first Episode, we asked the question "What Does It Mean To Be A Cook Islander?"
We give our thoughts on what it means to be a Cook Islander and how important it is to know our culture and language.
Hope everyone enjoys it!!!
Kia Orana and welcome back to another episode. On this episode I speak to Mr and Mrs Maurice and Tracy Hioe. These two have been apart of my life since moving over to Melbourne and I was fortunate enough to have worked along side Maurice in warehousing. In this episode we talk about their upbringing, and their relationship struggles but more importantly we speak about how Maurice received the "Call" to serve God. We scratch the surface on their journey in becoming Ministers in the Cook Island Christian Church and a few of the obstacles they had to overcome during that time. We all agreed that a part 2 was needed but for now, sit back and listen to how things dont always go to plan, and how we should all prepare ourselves for what ever challenges may come our way especially when we least expect it!!!!
G'day and welcome back to another episode of the KEEP IT SIMPLE PODCAST. In this episode I have a chat to a former Richmond Tigers Rookie Draftee, Piva Wright, who is of Samoan heritage playing the form of Football that is usually frowned upon by most in the Pacific Island community. Jump in and have a listen as we go through Pivas upbringing and go over some of the challenges hes had to over come in hi life. Grab a note pad and pen as well as Im sure there will be some golden nuggets through out this podcast.
Kia Orana and Welcome to another episode of the Keep It Simple Podcast, on this episode I speak with the creator and host of the "Te Vahine Nei" Podcast Polohu Ruapene Abela. How's it going everyone, thank you so much for the support and love listening to the Podcast. In this episode, I speak to and up and coming Musician from Melbourne, by way of the Cook Islands, hailing from the islands of Manihiki and Mangaia. We talk about his latest track 365 Ways, his journey so far from a youngster to the man he is today. We also explore the importance of family, and how much his music is influenced by embracing his past, staying true to himself, and making changes to achieve goals he has set for himself for the future. Sit back and listen in as I have a chat to Melbourne's own Chevvy, as we dive into his musical journey, while getting an insight into his life journey as well. Definitely a must listen for any aspiring musician out there!!!
Kia Orana, Kia Orana, welcome to another episode of the "Keep It Simple" Podcast. Its been a minute since my last episode and alots happened since then. Today I talk about some tips I used to help get myself out of a rut that I was in a few weeks ago. Work was starting to get to me and I was close to throwing in the towel, but was able to pick myself up and using these tips was able to get my head right and keep moving forward!!!!! Hope you enjoy and find value in this episode
In this episode, I pay homage to Cook Islands Language Week by sharing a childhood memory of the time my brother and cousins and I were compared to chickens. I also talk a bit about the effects of COVID 19 here in Melbourne and a few other things that Im sure you'll find interesting. Just a nice and SIMPLE episode for this one.
Hello and welcome to Podcast Episode number 4. Today I speak with a childhood friend/brother ROTO MAKARA, to get an insight into his upbringing and some of the struggles hes had to overcome to become the person he is today. Ive known Roto all my life, and its really refreshing to get to do this episode with him, and really just catch up and touch base with each other to see how things are going. Id suggest that alot of us should do this more often, and just check in and touch base with each other from time to time.
Note its a bit of a lengthy episode, but Im sure theres some golden nuggets in there that people can and will relate to, and some good tips to keep in mind for your everyday life.
In this Episode we have our guest from the North Side of Melbourne Will Elika phone in and have a chat about his upbringing, background and some of the struggles he's had to endure growing up thus making him the man he is today.
Here we have Episode 2 of the podcast, today we have a special guest on. Together we are going to share a few life experiences and struggles, and hopefully you the listener can learn from our story and do better for yourself
First episode for the poddy, just a little breakdown on who I am, why Ive decided to do a podcast and where I see this podcast going, exciting times ahead.
