Fifteen years! When you start a business, you don't think that far ahead, or at least I didn't anyway.
Now, standing here at Bentley Lewis's 15th anniversary, it feels like the right moment to reflect and anticipate what's to come.
To capture this, I sat down with our amazing CMO, Ameera Qureshi, MCIM. We didn't just discuss the history, we went into the why and the how behind the journey. It was a conversation that touched on the raw experience of setting up and growing a company.
The initial vision, the inevitable hurdles, the moments of doubt and the successes. We spoke candidly about leading through turbulent economic times.
It's one thing to lead when things are going well, another entirely when navigating recessions, market shifts, and global uncertainty.
The lessons learned in those periods are often the most profound, shaping not just the business but also yourself.
And, of course, we looked forward. The world of work is transforming at an unprecedented pace. We explored what the 'future of work' truly means for senior executives and aspiring leaders.
The skills needed, the structures evolving, and the mindset required to thrive. We also touched upon the broader economic forces at play and how they intersect with the executive search landscape.
I hope this episode is a little window into the realities of building a business, leading, and constantly adapting in a dynamic global economy.
We talked deeply about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for all of us in the executive world. If you're navigating your own entrepreneurial path, leading a team through change, or simply curious about the forces shaping the future of leadership and careers, I believe you'll find valuable insights in this conversation. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

You landed the interview, you nailed it, and now… the offer.
Salary negotiation isn't a battle, it doesn't have to be a difficult conversation either. It should be win-win.
In this episode of the podcast I deep dive into specific phrases, strategies, and how to navigate those sometimes awkward conversations.
Here are a few things to keep in mind before you even get to the numbers:
Research your market value to understand what you're truly worth.
Companies are open to these conversation.
Discuss salary after you've showcased your value and built rapport.
Consider the entire compensation package, including benefits and perks, not just the base salary.
Know your minimum acceptable offer and be prepared to politely decline if it's not met. Hope you find this useful.

NO Flexiblilty. NO WFH. Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, delivered a strong town hall recently, doubling down on his stance: full-time office attendance is non-negotiable.
Many other CEO's from the worlds leading companies are doing the same. In this episode, I share my take on this.
Many leaders argue that in-person work drives collaboration, efficiency, and creativity, but is this approach sustainable in a world where employees increasingly value flexibility?
The backlash from employees has been significant, yet a growing number of leaders remain firm, telling employees that the company, not individuals, will decide what works best for business operations.
This decision raises big questions:
👉 Is the era of remote work coming to an end for corporate giants?
👉 Will rigid return-to-office mandates hurt employee retention and morale?
👉 Or is Dimon right—does office-first culture truly drive better results? Here is my perspective on this heated debate. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
Is this “fair enough”? Or does it miss the mark in today’s workplace?

Does how you look and show up for an interview matter?
It's very likely to have a big impact on potential employers and probably to potential clients too.
That's the feedback one candidate in New York got for the reason she didn't get the job."She arrived at the job interview without make-up."
I'm certainly not advocating for companies to select based on looks, in fact quite the opposite. And in this case, it was about make-up.
If you find someone with an incredible attitude and potential, you can coach them on the other things.
However, whether we like it or not, first impressions do matter.
Humans make quick decisions about others based on things like appearance, body language, tone of voice.
So if you are about to interview for a great job, do all you can to give yourself the best chance of success. The article, click to read

Employees are reshaping the narrative around layoffs and work-life balance.
Lews Maleh and Jamie Craw discuss a growing trend among workers to record and share their layoff experiences on social media platforms like TikTok, seeking feedback, solidarity, and sometimes, a form of digital revenge.
This trend is demystifying layoffs and challenging the stigma associated with job loss, as workers openly discuss their experiences and feelings in a public forum. But it's not just about layoffs.
Employees are increasingly unwilling to compromise their health and work-life balance for early meetings or overtime hours. The culture of overwork is being scrutinised, and workers are advocating for more flexible, human-friendly schedules that respect personal time and wellbeing.
These trends reflect a shift in workplace dynamics, with employees leveraging digital platforms to voice their experiences and expectations.
As we navigate these changes, it's essential for employers to listen, adapt, and foster an environment that respects both the professional and personal lives of their workforce.

The power and influence of major tech brands have been a topic of discussion for many years.
Some argue that these companies no longer hold the same level of sway as they did in the past, while others believe that they are as strong as ever.
Despite these differing opinions, one thing is certain - these brands continue to shape the technology landscape and impact the way we live and work.
When it comes to the idea of a 4-day workweek, opinions are divided.
Some believe that shorter workweeks would lead to increased job satisfaction and improved work-life balance, while others argue that it would negatively impact productivity and overall economic output.
One interesting point to consider is that it is often way cheaper for companies to retain their existing employees than to hire new ones.
Your responsibility as a leader is to create the right environment for your employee to thrive.

A friend resigned from her job after almost 25 years of service. That is about half of her life. She gave everything. When she went to resign she thought the CEO would be angry. Instead, he invited her team and peers for a goodbye lunch and did a company wide personal thank you for her service. That is real class. When someone resigns from your team. Wish them the best. Say nice things about them. They worked hard for you. Kindness goes a long way.
If you've found yourself doing the bare minimum at work and bought one of those "mouse jigglers" to show your boss you're still online, it's probably time for a rethink. Take some time to consider what's important to you.
I spoke with someone who had been REJECTED from some job interviews they really wanted. I know that feeling of failing and being rejected really sucks. No one likes it, right? Well, THAT FEELING, use it as motivation. The experience of losing is good for you, especially if you're self reflective and find the learnings. If we can be a little bit better than we were yesterday, that's success! Keep going.
I've learnt over my years in exec recruiting that if you want to hire the best people, don't focus on the "perfect candidate", they aren't out there.
If you find someone with outstanding potential and a great attitude...hire them, invest in them, be kind to them, treat them like your most important asset.
You're not hiring a CV, you're hiring a human.

The skills that are most IN DEMAND are human skills (soft skills).
The way we interact with each other.
Who better to discuss this with than Jane Hanson (Communications Coach and Emmy Award Winning Television Host).
They enable us to form deeper connections with people. And are transferable from one job to another. While tech does tech things.
Let's focus on developing these human skills: - communication - listening - kindness and empathy - patience with others - the ability to have difficult conversations.
It's easy to identify the people in your team that have these skills.
They are ones that will always be there for you and have your back.
Q. I wounder what the impact would be if companies focused more on hiring for skills vs degrees?
A. I think we might be about to find out.
According to Lawrence Lanahan (Journalist and Radio Producer): "More workers without degrees are landing jobs they’d have been shut out of before."
Will it last though?
Join us as we discuss some big topics including: Is the field of study more important than which school you pick? Are University degrees starting to lose their currency? Will fears of a recession incentivize filtering by degree status?
Everyone thinks they can do recruiting better than a recruiter.

Very few founders share quite how hard things can get when you're in the midst of building, making sales, raising money, hiring, and the million other things you need to do.

There are lots of stories of people going through interview processes, getting offers, and using them to leverage more money at their current employers.
Is it a really bad strategy? Or the best approach to leverage more money?
Do you want new employees burnt out before they actually start?
Of course we don't :-)
Simplify your interview process and see what happens...
In this episode, Lewis shares some great tips on what to do and what to avoid.
Flexible working is the top 1 or 2 things people are looking for from an employer now.
Some people have got used to their recent working scenarios and are reluctant to go back, others prefer working in an office. There is no one size fits all.
Employers should be open to exploring all kinds of different arrangements for people so they can do their best work from wherever that may be.
What success looks like in different roles can be difficult to measure,
Thinking about this from the beginning is critical and will ensure you avoid expensive hiring mistakes.
You will find the quality of hires and candidate retention increases, which is a win on many levels.
Asking yourself a few questions can help you find the answers.
What are the core technical tasks they need to perform well on? For a Sales Director it might be:
How do you want the person to behave?
If you don’t take an overall view of performance and behaviour you run the risk of falling into a classic dilemma.
Would you “fire” your best performer if his or her behaviour is toxic and other people are leaving as a result?
Keep your connections and your culture strong.

The good news is that there are things you can do to help yourself. And if you are leading a team, there are things you can do to help people who you think are suffering.
This is a brilliant conversation with our CEO Lewis Maleh and Ryan Jenkins, Author and Co-Founder of lesslonely.com.

In the time I’ve spent in executive search, I’ve found that no matter one’s level, industry or career, we all need to find a sense of meaning in what we do.
The purpose of the organisation needs to align with their our own for us to join, stay, and contribute fully.
There are a few things leaders can do to help their team find their inner purpose and what drives them.
Adding just a few healthy habits into your workday can boost your mood, reduce your stress, and significantly increase your productivity. Not only will you feel better for it, but your business may just be better off, too.

Attracting and hiring people is tough for companies right now.
So with the job market as hot as ever, it's critical companies do all they can to retain their people.
Our CEO Lewis Maleh shares his thoughts on what the best companies are doing.
Is 3 months to make a hiring decision too long?
"Why wouldn't someone want to invest hours, days, weeks, months to prove they are worthy to work for us?!?"
Well...the best candidates are being snapped up quickly and businesses are realising they must move fast to secure great people.
If you want to hire the best talent, and you meet someone who you know is great, don't hold back.
What can you do to make faster hiring decisions?
➡️ Be open to updating the hiring process. ➡️ Ensure your hiring team makes time in their diary. ➡️ Hire for skills over experience.
Do YOU KNOW what candidates are saying about YOUR hiring process?
Too long...no feedback...ghosted...all about them...awful experience...
If a friend asks them about their experience, what would you like them say?
Remember you're hiring a person, not a piece of paper.
Here are my thoughts on how to make your interview experience expectational.
Would YOU hire YOURSELF? Here's HOW TO LAND your next job.
This little piece of advice could be the difference between receiving a job offer or not.

Many people use this technique to great effect.
This concept that has sold many books.
It will help you get your points across.
It will make people want to listen to you.

Make yourself valuable by recognizing and communicating your worth!
Doing it the right way will be pay you back 100000x.
It might be the last thing you want to do.
Maybe you were dealt a bad hand.
Whatever the scenario, always leave professionally, with dignity, and your head held high.
The workplace has changed beyond recognition these past few years. Businesses were forced to go remote, some have remained, others have gone hybrid, and some are desperate to return to the office.
What has all this done to workplace culture?
It’s clear remote working comes with many benefits.
Two-thirds of employers have reported an increase in productivity and many employees are enjoying a better work/life balance.
But many might fear the absence of an office could kill company culture, one size doesn't fit all, and many people reported feeling burnout with no separation between work and home.
Jack Mardack, Cofounder at Oyster joins our CEO Lewis Maleh to share their insights.

While advancements in tech are powering much of the change in the way we work, the skills that are rising most in prominence are human skills (soft skills).
The way we interact with each other. They enable us to form deeper connections with colleagues and customers. Skills that are transferable from one job to another. While tech does tech things.
Let's focus on developing these human skills:
▪ listening ▪ kindness and empathy ▪ patience with others ▪ the ability to have difficult conversations ▪ It's easy to identify the people in your team that have these skills.
The people who have these skills are the ones that are always be there for you and have your back. These are the best type of leaders.

This is one of those classic scenarios people from themselves in towards the end of a job search.
It often takes a while to find your next role, and if you're out of work during your search it gets more stressful the longer it takes.
I've had so many conversations with people about this I want to share my thoughts on how I'd approach it on my livestream.
"I got a job offer from "company A" 2 weeks ago which expires in 2 days.
I had a final interview with "company B" today, which is my favourite, but they said I won't hear for another week. What should I do?
I think their options are: Reject company A and wait for company B. Tell company A you're waiting for another offer. Accept company A and withdraw from company B. Accept company A and turn it down if company B makes an offer.
What would your advice be on this?

Watching a once-successful leader derail is hard. By the time you see it start to happen, it seems like it’s too late to stop it. Just like any crash, the damage can impact one person or many. A derailing leader will have a negative impact on their team, colleagues, and the entire company.
To limit the impact, we need a solution – something better than yelling “LOOK OUT!” as we watch in slow motion as they come off the tracks. We need to be there to offer support and help before it starts. Remember that we are all human and no matter what level we are in a company, we can all do with some help – but how?

Elizabeth McCourt, Executive Leadership Coach, shares her thoughts with our CEO Lewis Maleh on the importance of self-awareness in leaders.
