The HealthyADHD Podcast is an offshoot of the popular website HealthyADHD.com. Through a mix of science, expert interviews, and personal insight, Liz Lewis bridges the gap between experts in the field of ADHD, and the adults living with the condition. It does not suck.
I've been saying for months that I'd write down my experience. But I kept waiting and googling and hoping some other ADHD creator would do it for me.
Since it didn't happen I finally recorded everything I could remember about that period of time in March of this year.
For now this will be the last episode of the HealthyADHD Podcast.
There's so much noise right now in this space, and I don't want to add to it. But I'm keeping the door open for later. I still love having conversations so I won't rule it out.

My good friend Jaclyn Paul, from The ADHD Homestead is back!
I recently wrote a rant email about why it sucks that women*** bear the burden of the holiday season. In fact, we do all the invisible work of life, so kin-keeping shouldn't be a surprise.
Because her timing is always perfect, Jaclyn contacted me last week and we engaged in a series of voice messages about the concept of kin-keeping, and the added mental/emotional burdens of 2020.
Jaclyn recorded our conversation, as well as an audio version of her original article on kin-keeping.
As always, we both put a lot out into the world, and we appreciate your support.
Thanks for listening.

For all the parents muddling through online education, this one is for you!
I've asked my son a few times if he would talk about his, "special brain" on the podcast.
Over the weekend we decided to go ahead and talk a little about being raised by a mom who also has a special brain, and how he feels about school right now.
In short - he's not as miserable as I thought. And he is actually learning.
Next time he's going to tell stories about having an ADHD mom.

I'm not sure who first wrote this, but it's entirely true.
There is certainly an art to saying NO. But there is some room to say YES in our lives.
Here's a list of things I'm saying YES to, as well as a few things I'm saying NO to.

Today I bring you an inspiring interview with my new friend, Ian Walker.
Like many of us Ian grew up in a time when the ADHD diagnosis wasn't as common. He experienced the bullying, academic struggles, and low self-confidence that so many of us do. But Ian developed his own, "medicine" for ADHD that he now shares with the world.

- You can't screw up when it comes to worship
- Developing an inner sense of security through music
- How music became the best medicine for ADHD and managing emotions
- the divine inspiration for writing his book, and the writing process

So this is really a rant about my experience so far with hybrid education.
As a former teacher I don't blame the teachers at all.
But as an ADHD mom trying to run a business and manage my life day-to-day, I'm really struggling. I had a schedule in place to keep me productive, and now that schedule has been blown up.
It feels impossible to schedule podcast guests and write articles after 6 hours of fighting and crying our way through school work. We get it done, but it's not pretty.

As much as I love talking to doctors and researchers, I've never looked at ADHD from a purely clinical perspective. I've always looked at ADHD as a lifestyle factor. One small piece of a much larger puzzle.
Health isn't just about looking a certain way, and it isn't just about the absence of disease.
Health is about taking care of your body, taking care of your mind, and forming meaningful relationships.
Humans are infinitely complex. I like to think about ADHD from a WHOLE person perspective. It allows us to see past the symptoms and the labels and move away from the, "fix it" mentality.

ADHD Women and Self-Compassion do not just go together.
At least not in a conversation.
You know what I mean. ADHD women don't talk about self-compassion the same way we talk about our struggles.
But I'd argue this is a conversation we should be having.
The Negative Thought Vortex of ADHD, combined with the Executive Function difficulties inherent to the condition, make it difficult to manage emotions, plan ahead, and maintain meaningful relationships.
You will certainly have days that feel like a struggle. You will always have to manage your self-talk.
But you will also have progress. And days where you feel like anything is possible.
What I love about the practice of self-compassion is that you can do it on your own at any time. It’s another tool in your ADHD toolbox.

This is the audio version of the Instagram Live I did earlier in the week.
And...the article I updated from three years ago.
We are in the middle of a pandemic and we're pretty much forced to multitask in order to survive.
I have to parent, teach, make a home, make a living etc. And I have to do all of these things every single day.
You too?
ADHD people are at a breaking point. Many of us hit a wall last week.
Some of us have given up and just started numbing out on Netflix and food. We are in no position to work on our personal growth right now. And that’s totally ok.
Whether you have ADHD or not, multitasking does not work. The research is solid on this.

I first met Samantha on Instagram, and I immediately liked her quiet but informed vibe. In social media land often the loudest mouth wins. So I was really excited when I noticed she would be presenting at the 2019 Annual ADHD Conference in Philadelphia.
While coaching clients Samantha utilizes her ADDCA coach training, positive psychology, and her background in public health and epidemiology. And yes, Samantha also has ADHD.
She calls her business Unconventional Minds Coaching – because everything about her background and her style is unconventional. In the best possible way!
Samantha is the only coach I’ve met who takes an interest in social justice and improving wellness inequities. She is open to, and has worked with clients who have (or have had) unconventional, non-normative, and/or marginalized experiences and identities, including:

Another random episode.
We've all had another week of social distancing, and some of us are actually being told not to leave our homes.
I'm not a therapist, and I'm not funny like Whitney Cummings. But one thing about me is I've developed a skill for consistency. So that's what I'm offering the world.
This week I discuss:
- my hesitation about posting an article about, "positive life changes"
- people wasting mental/emotional energy worrying about dumb things
- why thinking about trivial things can actually be a coping mechanism
- things you DO NOT need to worry about
- creating calm when you brain is not calm- how predictability can help us feel more safe
- social support during this crazy time
- we need to stop comparing our suffering with others. Everyone's emotions are valid.
- ****A look into my own anxiety about the future of my family
- creating a plan for worst case scenarios so you don't have to think later
- the importance of observing and understanding your own thinking (yes, again!)
In case you were wondering, I do believe we can make positive changes in our lives. Corona virus or not.
As always, we are stronger together.

This is a podcast/post I've had brewing for a while in my brain.
I've seen some huge shifts in where people get their ADHD info over the last few years. Some of it is really good.
Things like podcasts have made high quality information more accessible to everyone.
But social media has actually made it more difficult for people to get good information. There is so much noise, so much misinformation, it's become overwhelming.
The average person cannot tell the difference between a well-intentioned content creator, and a person who really just wants to make some quick cash without knowing much about ADHD at all.
We've lost sight of what real community looks like. We think we have to put up with what's out there. Or shell out a bunch of money to get help.
I believe we can do better.

Laurie Dupar has answers!
At least once per week I get an email or a post in my membership about medications. Often the questions are posted because ADHD adults are simply not able to get the information they need for themselves and their families.
Confusion abounds and people turn to unreliable sources of information - like Facebook groups and other social media.
So I asked Laurie, an ADHD coach, and experienced psychiatric nurse practitioner, to sit down with me and discuss some of the questions I hear most frequently. I will produce a written post about this in the future.

In short, I was cut off from my normal buffering activities. At first, I was totally annoyed because I didn't know how to, "relax" without something to take me out of my own thoughts.
Then I discovered that in order to really calm my nervous system, and turn down the volume on my racing thoughts...I had to cut myself off. And I did. And it was magical.
This episode is the result of a conversation that we had in the ADHD Enclave about the distinction between numbing out and relaxing.
Numbing out = intentionally avoiding FEELING things, or thinking about things, or taking some action. Numbing out almost always involves some temporary pleasurable activity like social media, or bingeing on Netflix.
Relaxing = intentionally engaging with your own thoughts. Allowing yourself to breathe, think, and even
