We've all heard of the startup, but have you heard of the Startdown? What actually happens behind the scenes when you get to work? That's what the Startdown Podcast is all about. It's the grind, hustle, and drive that happens behind the scenes of the business you are creating. Host: Mike Ficara.

🇮🇹 This week we are joined on The StartDown Podcast by the Godfather of Instagram, Tony Pec! 🤌🏼

We talked about one of my favorite topics – stressing about likes, views, and followers. It’s not about having a million followers; it's about the impact and connection you have with the followers you do have.

Think about it: 72 likes might seem small on a screen, but imagine those 72 people in a room engaged with what you have to say. That's a powerful audience. These are individuals you can connect with on a deeper level. Engage with their content, understand their interests, and reach out. This personal touch could turn a simple like into a business opportunity, a conversation, or even a lifelong customer.

It's a shift from quantity to quality, from broadcasting to meaningful conversations. It's about creating value for every single person that chooses to engage with your content.

Next time you see 'only' 72 likes, remember: those are 72 potential relationships, 72 opportunities to make an impact, and 72 chances to grow your business authentically. In the realm of social media, the true currency is not in the number of followers but in the relationships, you build with them. Don't just count your followers; make your followers count.

Key messages from the podcast notes:

🇮🇹 Tony Pack introduces himself as the co-founder of Forbes-accredited marketing agency One on Media, helping businesses and brands grow their online presence through effective social media strategies.

🇮🇹 Social media connections can lead to valuable relationships and opportunities in business.

🇮🇹 Instagram has become a powerful tool for connecting with people, and Tony Pack emphasizes the importance of being highly active on social media for businesses.

🇮🇹 Tony Pack highlights the affordability of advertising on social media platforms, making it a cost-effective way to reach global or local demographics.

🇮🇹 Tony Pack's background is in mechanical engineering, but he transitioned into social media marketing as he realized his passion for being around people.

🇮🇹 Tony Pack shares how he accidentally entered the social media world by creating Instagram accounts for various niches and growing a substantial following.

🇮🇹 The term "Godfather of Instagram" was coined when someone saw Tony in a cigar lounge, smoking a cigar, and wearing a tracksuit reminiscent of the Godfather.

🇮🇹 Tony Pack's journey in social media marketing led him to become Forbes accredited, speak at events nationwide, and help over 1,000 businesses generate millions of dollars through social media.

🇮🇹 Social media is a critical opportunity for new businesses to gain market share, even with limited budgets, and it's essential for established brands to stay competitive in the next decade.

In this episode of The StartDown Podcast, we meet Lydia Stutesman, a high school teacher whose connection with our host, Mike, blossomed at a coffee event where they instantly bonded. Despite recently turning 50, Lydia exudes youthful energy and a perpetual sense of being in her twenties.

The conversation explores the delicate balance between pursuing one's true passion and succumbing to societal expectations. Lydia astutely observes that many individuals often find themselves ensnared in the cycle of doing what they believe they should do, rather than following their genuine passions.

With Mike's background as a former high school educator, the dialogue offers profound insights into the contemporary challenges of teaching today's youth. The conversation continues with how social media significantly shapes students' perceptions of higher education, perpetuating a culture of relentless ambition.

Mike underscores the frequently overlooked facet of personal finance—financial literacy. He emphasizes that the ultimate aim in personal finance is not opulence but financial freedom, symbolized by being "broke" in the sense of being free from debt. This prompts a pertinent question about the relevance of traditional college education. The evolving job landscape often means that many college graduates do not wield their degrees in their ensuing careers.

Lydia's career journey serves as a compelling testament to the pursuit of one's passions and the fulfillment of personal aspirations. She also discusses her own podcast, "Live Laugh Lydia," where she celebrates laughter, radio, and profound conversations, emphasizing that podcasting should be driven by passion rather than an insatiable pursuit of fame.

Lydia shares her experiences of encountering celebrities both in person and through digital media, delving into the profound connections that can ensue.

Controversial episode…I don’t put the cart back after food shopping!

For some reason, this is the new hot topic people use on the Internet to highlight how they are great people. Don’t get me wrong, it is a nice thing to do.

I don’t put the cart back for two reasons:

  1. When I was a kid, many of my friends worked at Publix. Going outside to get the carts was a great break for them. I worked at Publix for a short time in college and also saw this firsthand. At the Publix I shop at regularly, I see my favorite bagger collecting carts, and he loves it. Why take that away from him?

  2. I have young kids, and I will not leave them alone in the car or make them walk back to the store. Anyone with kids knows how challenging it can be to get kids back in the car!

Now, I do other good things that I don’t see these cart-returning heroes do. I hold doors for people and wave when a car stops and lets me cross the street in a parking lot. Does this make anyone of us a better or worse person?

More important than putting a cart back is how you act overall and who you help. I see many people doing great things in our community; some post it on social media and others don’t.
It’s not the thing we do or don’t do once that defines our character but how we act overall that matters. Don’t let the cart heroes fool you! lol

Do you take the back after you put your groceries in the car? This is a safe space! Lol

The StartDown Podcast is all about giving entrepreneurs the tools they need to start and grow their businesses. This week's episode is all about public relations, and Polly Brown is here to dispel some myths about the industry.

"A lot of people think that PR is all about pay for play," Polly says. "But that's not true at all. In fact, good PR can help your business get in front of the right people without having to spend a penny."

Polly goes on to explain how PR can help you build relationships with key media outlets, connect with potential customers, and create a positive image for your brand. She also shares some tips for getting started with PR.

"The most important thing is to have a clear message and a strong story," Polly says. "Make sure you know what makes your business unique and make sure that story is communicated in everything you do."

In this week's podcast, we discuss why it's important to have a proactive business model to anticipate challenges and get ahead of potential problems.

Whether a recession is coming or not is debatable, but the real question is, are we prepared for it?

If yes, what do you think is the best way to get through this recession? If not, what are you doing to help make it better?

When a recession falls upon the new world, it will not only be a disaster for all the businesses but it will be worse for those who have no idea that it's coming in the first place. Prepare for it while there's still time.

Stop punishing your company!

When do you think your business will be running at its full potential?

When you start getting more and more clients or when your employees work at their full potential and their abilities at their peak?

It wouldn’t make sense to get more work if your people can’t fulfill it. As an entrepreneur, you know what’s working and what’s not. Take control and do what will move your company and its people forward.

This week on The Start Down Podcast we talk about these topics with Liam Martin. He recently released a book on working from home and workplace culture.

Henry Ford once said, "The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing." As I sat down to reflect on this, I realized that just setting the goals, moving forward to achieve them, ultimately achieving them, and again setting out to bring in new goals isn’t the way we should be functioning.

If we don’t learn from our mistakes and wins, all our efforts are in vain.

Did you file your taxes yesterday?

If you did, forgot, or if yesterday caused you stress, Tyler McBroom can offer great advice!

Many people hear the word accountant and think, this guy is going to be boring and yell at me about everything I am doing wrong with my taxes. Not Tyler! He shares some great tips in this episode that will help you save money and grow your business.

Tyler is so dynamic as an account and leader in the tax industry and on social media that he has drawn the attention and collaborated with Daymond John, Tony Robbins, and Lisa Collum, just to name a few! Tyler teaches that you can use social media to do three things:

  3. Network and gain exposure to drive your success

We all want to be better. In this podcast episode, Hank Brand (Sibme) tells us how he is helping teachers improve their skills without stress.
Making sure teachers are well-equipped is one thing but making sure they continue to educate themselves and master their skills without adding any extra stress in today's crazy world of teaching is key!
In this episode of ‘The Start Down,’ I get to chat with Hank Brand who has prioritized this EXACT problem. It keeps me so humble and grateful that there are companies, people, and some schools taking care of their teachers.
Teachers are essential, and we have to continue to help them. Let me know what you think of the episode!

Did you know that the government can help schools and businesses achieve their goals? Believe it or not - the government DOES want your business to succeed, and they even more so want the schools to succeed!

There is just a LOT of different mumbo jumbo lingo, hoops, and people to get through to even begin to understand it. BUT once you get through it, there are some amazing grants, scholarships, loans, and many more ways to access monetary help to achieve your goals. We all know it takes money to make money, and I believe (besides lack of confidence) one of the biggest reasons people DON'T chase their dreams is due to lack of funds to get it going.

“WHO EVEN CARES ABOUT THE LIKES ANYMORE?!”

It is all about how your followers and likes are turning into conversations, engagements, and sales. How do you know what works if you don’t try it? Trying things outside of your comfort zone is how you learn, yes. But it is also where you MIGHT FAIL. And guess what, if you do fail, you aren’t a failure; that STRATEGY just didn’t work for you!

You will never have it all figured out. Even if you start to feel that way, things will change again and require you to step outside the box again! But you can do it!

KEEP Pushing the boundaries and trying things out.

Who are your mentors in your life? What or how do you DEFINE a mentor?

In this episode of The Start Down Podcast, my childhood friend and successful business owner, Julio Villarreal, talks about how anyone in your corner giving you advice and cheering you on is really mentoring you in some way!

This is a great perspective but makes you think - who are you spending most of your time with? Are you pushing to elevate each other and the relationship? Mentors can help you avoid making the same mistakes they made and coach you through hard times when you feel like you are alone.

Have you heard of this crazy trend of people avoiding calling goals what they are (goals) & calling them everything else except that for 2022? It’s RIDICULOUS! (P.S. It's NOT WEIRD to laugh at yourself on a podcast!) In episode 158 of THE START DOWN PODCAST, I debunk this trend!

Being an entrepreneur requires you to be OKAY standing in your truth even if that truth requires you to stand alone sometimes.

Looking for that “unicorn” strategy or company can seem impossible if you aren’t CLEAR on what YOU want to stand behind.

Make sure you are taking the time to reset and recenter to stay connected to your beliefs as a business owner. It could be as simple as sticking to your designated business hours to create balance in your work and home life.

No matter what or how you prioritize or get greedy about your goals or dreams (or “word of the year”), it all requires action. Persistence. Discipline. Strategy. Plans. Your Why. End Action Steps. Ways to Analyze. Either way, keep moving forward. Know that if you are working towards something that you enjoy and know it’s an overall goal, you are working towards the right thing.

Happy February! Share your goals below!

I can almost guarantee that you didn’t think that someone who works in corporate America and a business owner would have this in common!

No one cares about me. Do you ever say that to yourself? Do you feel your story does not matter? Well, you never know who you are going to help or when you plant a seed. This past week I was at an event and spent time with one of my former students. He may have not said it when I had him in class, but he still talks to me about things he liked about my class and how it helped him more than 10 years after we learned together. Always remember you are planting seeds! A book is no different. You may think you have nothing to say, you do! You may think no one will read it, they will! I felt this way, and so many other feelings when the process started, but now that the book is out there, the journey of writing and publishing a book has helped me grow and connect with some amazing people, and the book has only been out a month! In this week’s episode, I talk about the journey of writing my book. The ups and downs, the dreams and fears…and everything in between!

I want to dive into the concept of imposter syndrome and go over fear people have in some of their skill-sets even when they have the talent. Fear is false evidence appearing real.

In this weeks episode I wanted to ask the important question: How do you use your data? Sometimes we over complicate the data or what data is. Data can be simple like with my kids, how happy are they? We don't want to simplify data to much either or even skew the number to not fully be accurate or truthful. How do you use your data?

Fifty episodes! Wow! It has been a great journey and we have come a long way since the beginning but completing 50 episodes is something special. I wanted to talk about how I got started in podcasting and I realized that this isn't my first podcast, I had a small podcast about 10 years ago that I did as well. Podcasting is important because it gives a way for your audience to learn more about you and what you are about. Its a great way to create an inbound lead generation as well as a platform to have guests that bring value to your brand. --- Support this podcast:

In today's episode we are going over the concept of being a coach and a cheerleader. When do you need a pep talk and when do you need just some encouragement. Being a coach or having a mentor I believe to makes major difference in developing ones business. Coaches are great because they keep us accountable, they need to challenge you to be better, and help you see the bigger picture. These three components are some of the key topics we will be covering.
