Meet Abedin Dula, the exceptional young man who caught our attention last year in Athens. During the event, he raised a thought-provoking question about the lack of representation of the younger generation on stage. Impressed by his insights, we invited him to lead a panel at this year's conference, and we are thrilled that he accepted the offer.

In the months since our initial meeting, Abedin and I have had several discussions about the topic and the direction of his session in September. His clear thinking and concise messages have impressed us, and we believe that he is someone to watch out for in the future.

Good discussion with Fabio Gamba on how ASA (Airport Services Association) has and will change.

. Sweeping changes to the statutes of the association. All entities in aviation service markets can now apply for membership. ASA becoming a key point in the tripartite influencers along with airlines and airports. Many lessons learned from the Covid 19 pandemic – how to act on those lessons. The Authorities reaction to the pandemic and the needs of the service suppliers. Regulation – ICAO, EU, member states –

Cargo focus and importance – a reality now and not just rhetoric.

Change is needed across many boundaries and ASA wants to be at the forefront.

Great session with Graig. A man of passion for his subject matter and a truly engaged ambassador for ASI

Roads – Racetracks and Runways.

Another insight into a subject that most of us take for granted.
• Every time we taxi, take off and especially land should now have a different impact
• Awareness of impact to the tarmac from Heat, cold, water ingress, weights impacting and extraction of rubber from tires
• How to lengthen the lifespan of the runway and ensure that a responsible approach is taken re Carbon footprint

We mention pockets of excellence
New awareness within the industry – consider change and benefit
Enhanced products – Rhinophalt

Food for thought - ‘The top protects the bottom, but what protects the top?’

Emily Whalley joins me today on the EVA Podcast, she watched aircraft take off at her Gatwick-based home as a child - fast forward 20 years where she is working in BR-DGE at the Head of Travel Vertical.

The team Emily works in sits within the fintech and payment orchestration space; running a platform that allows merchants to take control of their payment journey. The company provides optimization of approval rates and manages failed transactions, can facilitate new payment methods and much more.

Challenges for airlines post-COVID have included managing government requirements, restrictions being lifted, refunds, chargebacks etc. It has been a difficult journey for the airlines. This platform manages this whole ecosystem, allowing airlines to dynamically manage their payments depending on global affairs and their current needs. Emily takes us through the benefits of using a platform like this, and how it can be so valuable.

BR-DGE is an expanding company, so if you’re currently looking for a role within aviation tech – definitely a great episode to listen to!

What is the difference between a job description and a minimum expectations document?

• The difference between a job profile and a job description is that a job description outlines the responsibilities of the position, while a job or performance profile sets the expected standards for performing a task.

• These documents serve different purposes as a job description is typically used for recruitment. A performance profile helps to ensure an employee is meeting the expectations of the job.

a. Are there clear performance and behavioural outcomes defined?
b. Is there a clear link to purpose and values?
c. How can you as an organisation show an alignment and cultural reference to values?

Talking again with Steven - Monthly or better if we can!

Busy schedules, and lots of travel experiences of being a passenger and a customer.

Points covered:
• Differences from larger HUB airports to regional
• BLAME BINGO
• Why are we not taking an overview of the entire issues
o Perhaps the chance for Airports to take the lead and insist on service level standards
• Collaboration and data sharing - lots of talk. However, most parties are reluctant to share and support the bigger picture
• Safety Culture is a term that is not being truly reflected in practice
o Fatigue
o Stress - pressures
o Experience support mechanism is heavily diluted now
o Line Trainers having to take frontline overview
• Urgency is now and is understood. Should we not also be looking ahead by 3-6-9 months and start to dig a foundation and do things differently
o No more rear-view mirror analysis - let's leave that to those that come and will be analysing what we did or what we should have done. Our focus now is on protecting our tomorrows.
• Airports now have the opportunity to address some of the parts and lead by example.
• A cultural change is indeed necessary, so perhaps we start with an 'effective culture' and encouraging the old team ethos and welcoming people to speak up.

The weekend show goes from weekly to monthly!

Pleased to be here with Steven Dickson, discussing the following topics:

More troubles, more self-survival from many within our industry and others.

  • Inflation and Strikes - like putting fuel on the fire!
  • What constitutes a fair offer?
  • Reductions in staff will be the outcome so the beginning of the end for many.

Should aviation now start to be realistic and cancel flights much sooner?

Be fair to the consumer - the passengers - the families - TAKE CAPACITY OUT NOW

Many losers, however, the public should not be the major casualties..

Candid and entertaining as always and never shy to deliver a punchline or direct repost - Steven returns in true form.

To everyone who makes contact and drops a line - many in a humorous tone – A big thank you, always good to smile.

  • How do we make aviation the best option on the ramp & in the warehouse
  • Training to build confidence and competence
  • Ensuring safety above all else and WHY!
  • More emphasis on the environment and hygiene
  • How encouraging employees to be listened to and to feel free to offer input
  • Career options with transparency of steps and expectations
  • Why there is so much underlying FEAR to change
  • Why use DATA wisely

Great to be back again with Steven, it’s been a while due to a hectic business schedule and travel!

In this episode, we catch up on The Queens 70th Celebrations (what a milestone!).

What an amazing 4 days of celebration, acknowledgement, recognition and collaboration – the concert, surprizes, entertainment, technical proficiency and all-around success. The concert was an example of incredible organization, timing and collaboration – Britain at its Best!

However, flights cancelled, queues, delays and a lack of effective planning and forecast capability in the aviation industry was a clear contrast. Our industry needs to focus on the summer to avoid unnecessary bad press. Solutions need to be effective and not superficial – Leadership of a new model is urgently required.

Another get together and catch up with Steven Dickson.

Perfect storm -
• Lack of specialist skills
• Lack of employee numbers
• Lack of equipment
• Lack of services - China/Covid, Ukraine Impact, Inflation, drop in demand, drop in production
Yet - should be the perfect time for recovery and confidence

Some challenging times ahead
Crisis Leadership is now a focus much in need -- how to navigate around the volume of disruptive events.

• Bonuses
• Compressed working weeks
• Incentives to join
• Retention bonus etc.
Is this the way forward?
Question - 'Why is all of the above not linked to service levels, added-value services, quality, satisfaction etc.
Being busy is not necessarily best!

How do we change and what should be changed first before the cascade effect is expected over the next 9-18 months..

Present and Vice-President of ULD-Care, Urs Wiesendanger and Bob Rogers discuss the nightmare compromising logistics in the freight equipment world, where a shortage of pallets (PMCs) means 640 aircraft worth of cargo is wasted at any one time.

New Russian sanctions on one of the three manufacturers for PMC in the world, added to terrible efficiency in the industry = the problem is beginning to snowball. Bob and Urs advocate for an industry level approach to start treating ULD assets as an essential component.

They tell us how the ULD-Care event will showcase innovation, new products and services they will provide to the industry that will prevent crises like this.

Great to be back. Celebrity Introductions from our youngest team member Evan Dickson.

It seems that every organisation is looking for good people yet so many companies are desperate for people on seats - new employees.
From incentives to financial rewards for joining. Is this the right strategy?

With this challenge comes:
• References administration
• ID - 5-year background check
• Induction
• On-boarding
• HR support programs - contracts, terms, code of conduct etc.
• Agency support
• Seasonal staff
The situation is reasonable but not sustainable.

The reality is -
Phase 1 Survival
Phase 2 Stability
Phase 3 Sustainability

Difficulties ahead and we need to address them differently.

Tim Wakeford - CEO Caeli Nova

Great name - Fresh Air!

Caeli Nova - 'Launches emergency oxygen system which helps reduce fuel and emissions' - the name is Cordillera - 'Mountain Range'

  • Patented breathing technology will deliver improved safety
  • Will also overcome existing limitations when operating the planets most challenging routes, such as those over high terrain regions
  • More direct routes
  • Reduction in fuel
  • Reduction in emissions
  • Shorter flight times for passengers

Current regulations limit airline's ability to operate the most direct air routes, such as L888 over the Himalayas.

Cordillera allows an aircraft to safely divert at a higher altitude to a suitable alternate airport following a decompression event.

Caeli Nova received initial design organization approval from EASA in December 2020 following an eight-month process.

With design authority now in place, the company can now continue the development and installation of its first product Cordillera under its own Supplementary Type Certification (STC).

A great innovation in so many ways!

Topical session with Michael in light of the recent shipment of mobiles catching fire in HKG.
Another warning sign – another investigation. How will it influence what must be done?

A basket full of Why’s?

• Why do these things keep happening?
• Why do we not get together and make some clear rules and expectations?
• Why do we allow organisations to avoid regulation or license if involved in transportation of goods by Air / Sea/ Rail or road?
• Why do governments not make a stand?
• Why does the entire supply chain be allowed to avoid required best practice?
• Why is the ‘green back’ able to influence controls to such a degree?
• Why do we not have smart data transparency to ‘assist’ the system in reducing risk?
• Why is there not more relevant and detailed training for all parties coming in contact or touching / deciding on how, when, and where to load or build a pallet/container?
• Why do we not focus on Just Culture promotion more and more?
• Why does C-Suite not take detailed notice in training and competence as well as control and accountability?
• Why does the industry not just say NO and enough is enough?
• Why is eComm and POST allowed to bypass normal restrictions and compliance guidelines?
• Why is there so much Lithium Battery Debate, because if we don’t act it could be too late!

As always with Michael – a great exchange of opinion, ideas and consideration.

Full of energy and opinion - it was a real LIVE show- actually, waiting for and during the announcements of travel bands!

In addition, some live coverage of 'how to keep your house spick and span' with a new guest - Nellie.

Points also covered:

  • India development - international support & also need for own self accountability in certain areas
  • Vaccines -- big impact and needs to be rolled out quickly - everywhere. HOWEVER - not a panacea or free immunity pass. We must still be cautious!
  • Variants of concern
  • Price rises and expected demand inflation
  • Political results in UK and perhaps a much overdue change in how the people judge politicians. Food for thought!
  • Need to focus on some basics or else:
    • Accountability
    • Risk Awareness
    • Sustainability
    • Education

Prof. Dr. Yvonne Ziegler

CEO of Mytigate

Ex-colleague of mine from Lufthansa days when we both lived in Stockholm some 21 years ago.. When I walked across water..

  • Mytigate has been likened to the 'trip advisor' for Pharma
  • Supported by Pharma Partners
  • Point of reference
  • Transparency
  • Consolidation of pharma handling ratings
  • Shared audits and accreditation criteria
  • Ref to all certification and recognized standards – IATA, CEIV, GDP
  • Objective to make transparent the digital lane risk assessment for pharma and now especially Vaccines

The carriage of pharma is not strange to the Aviation industry. However, most temperature excursions happen during supply chain activity and mainly on the ramp!

The estimated loss due to temperature excursions amounted to $34 Billion back in 2014

Food for thought indeed!

Vaccines are now getting huge profile and media coverage so correct assessment, validation and verification is crucial!

Little did we know back then that this damn pandemic would have such an effect on us all!

As we approach the week that introduces March and the end of Q1 -- POSITIVE SHOOTS OF SPRING AWAIT...

Positive shout out for Captain Tom - what a man and a man of the hour when he was needed - will be laid to rest today and what a legacy of inspiration he leaves behind.

Politicians, tabloid press should learn to speak from positions of data driven detail and not from their South Pole regions.

Many a poor statement delivered when in a situation of not knowing what we don't know!

We also discuss:

  • 737 Max - DOT Inspector General report and recommendations - the need to be aware of same parties validating and verifying - a lesson across all accreditation and certification exercises
  • IAG recognition of Cargo Importance - Lynne Embleton soon to be EI CEO - good luck in the new position
  • Positive results for ATLAS & Chapman Freeborn & all Cargo business units
  • High yields - need a balance to allow sustainability across the sector - do not return to a race to the bottom
  • IATA - Return mission
  • Slots waiver
  • Norwegian and canx of Airbus Aircraft orders
  • New testing development - quicker, faster & more in line with process efficiencies -Toronto Airports 'Point of need' tetsing
