“Reshaping the Retirement Conversation with Better Advisor Software”
Developing a thoughtful, thorough retirement plan today requires increasingly specialized expertise in needs analysis, risk assessment, product selection, Social Security optimization, health care planning, performance management, and psychology. Climate change promises to impact more than the property & casualty sector. The Department of Labor recently released a “Request for Information on Possible Agency Actions to Protect Life Savings and Pensions from Threats of Climate-Related Financial Risk.”
Home equity comprises a major part of retirement savings, but many homes lay in regions under threat of flooding from climate change. Should this change our key retirement planning assumptions? Have we created retirement products with enough asset diversity to buffer critical sources of income from rising seas and hotter, more arid seasons? Finally, can annuities provide retirement stability for sectors of our community adversely affected by necessary changes in our economy? Listen to learn more.

Prior to the pandemic, seniors proved to be the highest growing user segment for Facebook. As a result of the pandemic, they now know how to use a variety of video conference tools like Zoom and FaceTime. Nassau Re/Imagine Retiretech Forum Session 3: Product Innovation
“How Will Key Product Categories Evolve over the Next Five Years?”
Product innovation has only accelerated over the last five years. FIAs and RILAs have stormed to the center of most individual carrier’s product agendas. The SECURE Act has opened the doors for intense focus of companies hoping to redefine the role of annuities and 401(k). The pension risk transfer market has exploded as administrators seek efficient solutions for longstanding obligations. New software platforms open the door for synthetic solutions that don’t require traditional carriers. Finally, will the government change the rules of Social Security and provision of financial advice in ways that will shake the bedrock of millions of plan assumptions? Where will this all lead us in the next five years?

“Moving Service Functions from the Call Center to the App Store”We still primarily serve our customers in a business model defined by answering inbound phone calls, managing forms, and opening lock boxes. However, the entire world, including seniors, is rapidly shifting to an app economy. The AARP found that individuals over 50 dramatically increased their adoption of smartphones, tablets, and wearable devices during the pandemic. Today, 97% of individuals over the age of 50 report owning at least one primary digital device. How will expectations change for modes and hours of communications? Will payment expectations shift from ACH to Venmo? What opportunities does this present for better meeting the needs of retirees?

Panel 1: Sales & Marketing
“Starting Retirement Planning Discussions in an Increasingly Distracted World”
Retirement planning is a critical need for millions of Americans. However, it’s never been harder than it is today to start that important conversation. Call screening technology grows more sophisticated. Digital ad prices increase. Email open rates decline. Conflicting messages in the mainstream media cause doubt about the value of our core products. In addition, a growing stream of television ads threaten to create health care planning fatigue. How should the industry adapt and find more effective ways to create more individual retirement plans? What platforms will advisors and distributors need to make finding clients as efficiently as possible?

In the fourth episode in the Risk & Innovation Series, we conceptualize the insurance industry in the year 2030. How seamless will the consumer purchasing process be? Are there such things as non-embedded insurances? How will regulators govern a future that does not yet exist? Will the industry apply an even weight to technological advances as it does to human capital? We explore these and many more!

In this limited series, we will explore the frontiers of risk and innovation. Join the Re/Imagine team, Barney’s faculty, graduate students, and leading thinkers in the sector to explore how technology, science, and entrepreneurship will shape risk management in the future.
The new emerging risk management environment introduces many new business practices such as “smart contracts”; the use of alternative currencies, and expedited claim processes. Blockchain, examined on its own, is emerging as an “operating system” which can facilitate many “businesses-to-business” transactions. Yet it has been almost exclusively associated with cyber currency transactions.
When properly structured and controlled, blockchain transactions offer significant enhancements to risk financing transactions which can be secure, timely, accurate, and reconcilable. So why aren’t we seeing it utilized predictably within the insurance ecosystem?
We dive into these concepts and explore associations between blockchain and the Wild West.

Today, many emerging and systemic risks are becoming uninsurable. Examples include climate change, cyber security, and supply chain disruptions.
The evolving trends are now leading to the use of traditional insurance to its maximum viability and supplementing risk management and risk financing with alternative capital.

In this week’s episode, we explore and discuss the emergence of ESG (environment, social, and governance) investment and operating strategies. ESG has evolved into a cultural context for management, demonstrating value in the short term and adding value in terms of organizational sustainability and operational agility, and flexibility.
Adoption of ESG criteria is becoming evident in many organizations; - both for-profit and non-profit entities as the paradigms of the past – sacrificing short-term gains for long-term returns has been disproven through academic research.
While ESG has emerged as a powerful foundation for a resilient culture for organizations, we have to ask, who is the driving force behind ESG? Is it the company or the consumer? Listen to learn more.

Some people say that life insurance one of the noblest gifts for others. A person who purchases a policy usually won’t benefit it from it – but their surviving spouse and children will. Everyone in the insurance industry wants the policy to be in force when it’s really necessary. Unfortunately, the person who purchased the policy may let the policy lapse – sometimes intentionally and other times not. Today, Neeraja Rasmussen, CEO of Spyglaz and Sue Zophy, Chief Service Officer for Nassau Financial talk about a project underway to use machine learning to better predict who will lapse. And with that information, the company hopes to make certain that customers continue to understand the protection the policy provides for their loved ones. The discussion also offers a lens into the challenging process of finding and keep new customers as a startup.
Listen along as we discuss the three things a startup has to do in order to become a valued tool and accepted partner. 👂full episode: https://imagine.nfg.com/podcasts/ #retiretech #competitiveadvantage #innovation #connectingdots #serviceinnovation #customerretention Neeraja Rasmussen is the Founder of Spyglaz, a machine learning platform for customer retention and growth, serving the Life/Annuity Insurance and Asset Management industries. Spyglaz uses machine learning to predict the next best action for better customer conversations, which distribution partners are most likely to grow over time and early asset retention opportunities. They do this through a rapid adoption process that does not require backend integration, does not touch legacy systems, and starts delivering value within 4 weeks.
Before founding Spyglaz, Neeraja spent 20+ years managing customer retention/acquisition programs for financial services and technology companies. She has 10+ years of experience building global teams from the ground up, with hands-on experience developing customer-first programs for both Fortune 500 and SMB companies. New retirement product development opportunities will clearly emerge as we emerge from the pandemic. We expect that all products will need to factor in an extended periods of very low interest rates and still deliver value.
Demand should, however, increase. Consumers will clearly understand and appreciate the importance of guarantees more than they did prior to February 2020.
Will the SECURE Act combined with deployment of new technology and services finally cause greater demand for annuities in the workplace?

We know from the study of behavioral finance that if we help individuals create a positive vision of their future selves, they will be more likely to start saving today.
In a post-COVID world, what changes? Traveling on a cruise ship every year sounded like a great second chapter in life. Spending your last 20 years in an active senior community with common facilities and great care may have been a dream.
Creating new positive visions for retirement proves challenging in a social distant environment using conventional approaches. Can digital engagement bridge that divide?
