The title says it all. With a Barcelona win in El Clasico this past weekend, the La Liga title edges ever so close to returning to Catalonia! Outside of Spain, we take a look at the continued "title race" in the Premier League, who might be candidate for Player of the Year, and which teams truly have the best (worst?) chance of going down at the end of the season.
Between the Champions League, the Prem, and La Liga all in action over the last few days, we had to divvy things up. No league talk on this week's episode, but we go over all of the Ro16 matches in the Champions League and who the favorites to go one step further might be!
What did we witness on Sunday? Was it real? Was it a simulation? After a day of processing, we've come to the conclusion that it REALLY DID HAPPEN! From the North West derby, Arsenal's late dramatics, and a thumping win for Atletico Madrid over Sevilla, there was almost too much to go over this week. But, really, there's never too much footy.
While European competition waits in the wake, this past weekend still featured a multitude of big games. From United's first trophy win in over 5 years to what was actually a somewhat boring (and not uncommonly boring) Madrid Derby, we go over it all! SO much happened this week in European competition for Spanish teams, both big and small! On this week's La Liga specific episode, we cover the historic win for Real Madrid at Anfield, Barcelona getting knocked out of Europe for the 4th time in a little over a year, and some of the ups and downs going on at Sevilla and Valencia.
This week, we go over all the fun events in the Premier League including United looking like a team under Sir Alex Ferguson, Liverpool picking up points for what feels like the first time in forever, Chelsea's continued woes, and some big title race implications! BONUS: A separate La Liga episode will be out later this week after the Champions League/Europa League games!
Look, we're still reeling from the SuperBowl loss, but we found enough energy to get together and record. Just for all of you. With the Quarterfinals upon us, a lot of people are going to make their predictions and bets. But, what we've realized is that knockout football can make absolutely ZERO sense sometimes. Over in Spain, we try and unpack a ridiculous game with 3 red cards as well as Piqué's announcement, Quique Setién's poor run with Villarreal, and Spain's chances at World Cup glory!
This weekend, we were reminded of the importance of getting back to basics (à la Atlético Madrid). This weekend's game of the week in England was the definition of a chess match, with two new managers in Ten Hag and Potter piecing together a fascinating tactical performance. Rheon also explains how on Earth the Miguel Almiron story has led to Almiron's best season in top flight football while Jesse Marsch is hanging on by a thread at Leeds. Over in La Liga, Real Madrid completed their bi-annual win against Sevilla, but it wasn't as comfortable as it looked on paper. Lastly, we had to talk about Fede Valverde and some of the insane refereeing decisions in Spain.
This past weekend saw big teams win and big teams lose. That's about as clear cut as it gets. From our game of the weekend in England, Liverpool vs City, and El Clasico in La Liga, we had our hands full trying to wrap our heads around how Liverpool managed to beat City and how Barcelona looked so poor. Outside of the big games, we go over a wild Chelsea/Kepa performance, how we should all be thinking about Nottingham Forest, Atletico entering a good run of form, and Sevilla's continued disappointment.
This week on the podcast, we discuss a major match up in England with Arsenal beating Liverpool at home while City, Chelsea, and Newcastle continue to impress. In fact, Newcastle gets some well deserved praise from Rheon this week as well. Over in La Liga, we spend some more time in Spain given we haven't reviewed it too much in the last 2 weeks. We go over Barcelona's recent woes post-international break and whether their strong run before it was all smoke and mirrors. We recorded this before the Inter Milan game in mid-week, but a lot of what we talk about is related both to our thoughts before the game and the upcoming Clasico.
