This week we talk about a documentary that follows the bizarre true crime saga of Scott Scurlock, better known by his alias "Hollywood" - a bank robber who captivated Seattle in the 1990s and loved the movie Point Break.
Turns out, he's not so different than we are only we wouldn't be caught dead naked in a treehouse.

Boy is there a lot to unpack about this lady and her partner, Jodi Hildebrandt. Let's discuss why parenting extremes are a real good way to lose your children forever and might even make you end up in prison for 60 years.
We were going to make this a Pateron episode originally but decided that you guys are awesome and we wanted to surprise you with a bonus episode this week. Enjoy!!

This summer on Patreon we will be watching this entire series but we wanted to let our full audience get a sneak peek this week.
Y'all, Robert Durst is SOMETHING ELSE. He was cross-dressing in order to not be recognized as the killer that he is.
I would say that this is going to be so much fun but that doesn't seem right given the viciousness and violence of his crime. But wow, he is CRAY!

We're going back a few years for this one. This case is a true crime lover's dream. Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were a brand new couple when they're accused of murdering Amanda's roommate, Meredith Kercher. What happens over the course of the next few years becomes an international incident. As far as we're concerned, though, we're #TeamAmanda all the way!

The bad news: Last fall, we recorded this episode and totally forgot to release it. But gosh, it is such a great documentary!
The good news: We remembered it thanks to a listener suggestion and here it is cued up and ready for your listening pleasure!
Killer Sally: After years of abuse, former Marine and bodybuilder Sally McNeil snapped on Valentine's Day 1995 and killed her husband Ray McNeil, also a former Marine and award winning bodybuilder. Their story is what true crime documentaries are made of. The backstory is compelling, the victim and her children are incredibly sympathetic, and the story is heartbreaking.

Today, Misty and Amarilys dive into Gunther's Millions, a documentary that will leave you with more questions than answers.
But before they unveil the goods, a quick heads up: the episode starts with around 14 minutes just chatting things up. They had to talk about how grateful they are for YOU, the amazing listeners, a Natalia Grace update, and of course, a random Misty story. So, grab a snack, sit back, and enjoy the prelude before they jump into the world of German Shepherds who are one percenters.
In this insane documentary, a dog inherits a jaw-dropping fortune of $400 million. From that point on, buckle up because what's true one minute, is not true the next. Gunther's Millions takes you one of the strangest rides you've ever been on and leave you wondering what the heck you just saw.

BONUS EPISODE: SURPRISE! It’s a bonus episode. Last year the ladies did an episode about a show that wasn’t a documentary. It was a dramatization of the real live events of Candy Montgomery who killed her friend with an axe because of jealousy. So we did a thing. The good news: We recorded ourselves during a Facebook Live so if you missed it, you can listen here. The bad news: We are ALL OVER the place. Nevertheless, we talk a whole lot about the cult known as IBLP led by cult master Bill Gothard and its most famous members, the Duggar family.
The Duggars are sweet, beautiful, and faithful Christians. They are the titular Shiny Happy People but it's all a veneer. Let's talk about eye traps, devil sticks, and NIKE!! (iykyk)
Beware: There's lots of giggling, lots of interaction with our online guests, and just general silliness coupled with some real discussion about the damage caused by legalism and extra-Biblical teachings.
Tune in to find out why these "shiny" people are more than meets the eye.

This episode will have you questioning reality, and we promise plenty of laughs along the way!
With their trademark humor, Misty & Amarilys dive headfirst into some of the craziest scenarios you've ever heard of in "The Curious Case Of Natalia Grace." It's the rollercoaster ride you never knew you needed.

Welp, here's an episode that you don't want to hear. But we recorded it so we didn't want it to go to waste. I mean, this topic is TOUGH. We found some giggles in there which was the only way to get through the material. So please forgive us if our laughter seems inappropriate. Especially if you're that reviewer who hates our laughter. It's been way too long, Doc-ters! We've missed you! Join us on our return from yet another hiatus as we discuss Pamela: A Love Story. Pam Anderson was a joke in the 90s when she and her husband's sex tape fell into the wrong hands. Her career took a hit but her life was also affected and the world laughed not realizing there was a human being behind all the hype.
There are a couple of times in this discussion that you might not want your younger children listening so take heed! No worries, it's not awful but sometimes things aren't for little ears and we just wanted to let you know!
Enjoy and be sure to come back and let us know what you think. But only if it's good. Keep it yourself otherwise. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Amarilys watched the entire documentary. Misty did not. That would normally only be a tiny problem but in this case, Amarilys couldn't find her notes so almost this whole episode was from the hip. What an insane story this is! Conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton were sold by their own mother to a savvy businesswoman who turned their disability into a profit making machine for herself. We like to think of this documentary and podcast episode as more of a history lesson of sorts for younger Millennials and Gen Z. They will never know the pain of loitering around the return bin in the hopes of catching the latest VHS release of certain big screen hits nor will they ever experience the smell of a brand new Blockbuster in their towns. They will never have the privilege of signing up for their own card when they come of age. And they will never have to worry about late fees.
But not us old folks. We experienced it all. And this wonderful documentary brings up all the right memories and makes you long for the most fun part of your week: renting a movie over the weekend.
You'll hear us reminisce about those days and we also sometimes get a little sidetracked. --like we always do. We can't help it. Sorry not sorry.

This week, Misty and Amarilys may make some enemies. Hillsong is a megachurch out of Australia who built an empire around the world on the strength of its amazing music. They were led by a dynamic man named Frank Houston and a host of celebrity pastors including Carl Lentz who pastored Hillsong NYC. Parishioners at NYC consisted of the likes of Justin Bieber, some Kardashians, Chris Pratt and a number of other celebrities. But what happens when a church becomes larger than its message is supposed to be? Scandal after scandal ranging from financial and ethical irregularities all the way to unspeakable crimes against women and children.
As women of faith and lovers of c(C)hurch, Misty and Amarilys have a lot to say about this type of organization. Join them as they discuss this very popular church.
As always, please rate and review if you enjoy what you hear and to get more fun and interesting discussions, join them at Off The Doc on Patreon.

If there's a new documentary on Netflix and it has to do with someone getting swindled and scammed, you know we're gonna watch it. And boy did this one deliver! Sarma Melingailis was a successful restauranteur in NYC with a bright future ahead until a new man comes into her life and begins to chip away until nothing was left. This documentary will leave you dumbfounded and just plain ole mad. In this episode, you'll hear talk of veganism, Pigeon Forge, TN, and reaching immortality for you and your dog all in the same hour. --Not to mention how to spend $6,000,000 you don't have in the course of about a year.

In 2004, Morgan Spurlock made a movie that impacted millions. And that's no understatement. The movie did well at the box office, was nominated for an Oscar, and to this day, is shown in middle and high school health classes.
And yet, the claims are all dubious and Spurlock seems to just simply not like people who aren't thin and fit. This movie does bring to light the pitfalls of the standard American diet but it also takes liberties with the actual ramifications And we're here for it. You'll have to forgive Amarilys's vulnerability in this episode and congratulate Misty on how well she handled the tears that came as we talked about a subject Amarilys is all too familiar with. ______________ If you like what you hear, join us over on Patreon and leave us a review if you have a moment. What happens when you're young, rich, and spoiled? You get duped by a con-man who charged as much more than $200,000 for a weekend music festival on an abandoned island and you get to eat cheese sandwiches. This is the unbelievable story of how Billy McFarland attempted to organize a music festival with only 3 months' notice and how it all fell apart at the expense of millennials who just wanted to be like super models. Amarilys forgot to turn on the microphones on this episode last week so they pulled it and re-recorded it. We're hoping to raise enough Patreon funds that maybe one day, Amarilys can go to a training class that teaches her how to press "on" and "record" simultaneously. In any case, if you're interested in the original, it's been uploaded to Patreon. We would love to have you over there, too! * Are you responsible for the death of someone else if you encouraged them to take their own life? That's exactly what happened when Michelle Carter's boyfriend, Conroy Roy, began to contemplate ending it all. This is a conversation about personal responsibility when mental illness is involved. --and a conversation about the importance of eyebrow maintenance. We also discuss our own personal experiences with depression and meds. As always, we can't help but laugh quite a bit even when talking about such serious matters. Life is tough. Sometimes a laugh is exactly what we need to get to the next moment. Don't forget to rate and review if you like what you hear. * We love to hear from you so feel free to reach out at onthedocpodcast@gmail.com or at the voicemail link below. * Also, we can be found at Off The Doc on Patreon. When you're single, you're often searching for Mr. Right and for Cecile, Simon Leviev was just the man for the job. In this bonus episode, Misty and Amarilys take on a very serious topic: bullying. The episode is a departure from the regular fun and games you hear the ladies talk about but it's an important thing to discuss as it has dire consequences if not addressed. In this movie, your heart will break as you watch the kids be targeted through no fault of their own and you will see what pieces remain when some of them take matters into their own hands. We see how parents, adults, and teachers have all failed these children when they came to them for help. But when you know better, you do better and it's our hope that our little discussion in our small part of the podcasting world will be heard and make a difference when your child or student approaches you with this problem. In the second half of the discussion, Misty gets vulnerable about her own child's experience with a bully this year. It's hard to listen to but hopefully you will hear her heart and talk to your own children about what's been happening under our own noses.
Do you have a story about a bully? Let us know. We can be reached across social media platforms, email (onthedocpodcast@gmail.com) or voice mail at the link below. We would love to hear from you. Thanks for letting us get serious for a bit. Bully can be streamed on Netflix or rented on Prime, AppleTV, YouTube, and DirectTV.

What happens when you're accustomed to private planes, a nanny for each of your eight children, and plastic surgery at will and then the economy crashes? In this week's episode, we see how the uber-rich Siegel family dealt with having to live like the common people by (GASP!) sending their children to public school, renting a car but not having a chauffeur, and flying commercial. Misty and Amarilys also welcome guest co-host JD Wilkins who is Misty's daughter's boyfriend. Got that? As always, there's plenty of banter and even a Minnie Pearl mention. Enjoy and don't forget to rate and review OTD if you like what you hear! Have a great week, friends!

Admit it, you have an attic full of Beanie Babies and you hope to one day rule the world with the enormous amount of money you're going to get when you sell them. Right? This week we discuss HBO Max's new documentary about the Beanie Babies craze of the 90s and learn that if you're ever offered $100,000 for a collection of stuffed animals, you should immediately accept or be stuck with thousands of little toys that are totally worthless 30 years later. Also, we extend a request for a million dollars from Elon Musk in the hopes he has it just laying around the house and is looking for someone to give it to. Imagine creating a huge conflict between yourself and every single one of your neighbors because of Christmas lights. That’s exactly what Jeremy Morris did.
Mr. Morris wielded his position as an attorney and made sure his poor wife would never have any friends again because of the way he treated the neighbors.
He also has a special affinity for sweaters and sweater vests, cotton candy robots, and camels.
How could the ladies resist talking about this doozy of a documentary? Streaming on Apple TV+, this documentary is brand new and worth the time.
Wishing all of our wonderful listeners a very merry Christmas and a happy new year? Enjoy!

We just can't quit Tiger King so here's a follow-up to last year's juggernaut quarantine documentary. Gosh we love this train wreck.
We talk for about fifteen minutes at the beginning about absolutely nothing so if you'd rather skip that, the doc conversation really starts at or about 15:30. Also, there's a couple of times the discussion turns a little sideways so it might be NSFW. No cursing, just some adult subjects. Don't judge. Enjoy and let us know what you think, friends!

Edith and Edie Bouvier Beale are a mother daughter team who live in a 28-room mansion in East Hampton. --and while that sounds amazing, the house was condemned at one point and now they live in only one of the rooms, is flea infested, and there are a bazillion cats and raccoons that also make the estate their home. They also like to cook corn-on-the-cob bedside. The relationship between the two ladies is at the heart of what makes this documentary simultaneously compelling and a train wreck. Misty and Amarilys attempted to video themselves and if it sounds like they had a good time, it's because they did. If you don't like to hear them laugh, then this might not be the episode for you. You can catch Grey Gardens on HBOMax or YouTube (for free!) Enjoy! As always, if you enjoyed listening to this nonsense, please leave On The Doc a review on iTunes or Facebook. The second we saw that hair, we knew we had to talk about it. Gwen Shamblin began her career as a diet expert in the early 90s and built an empire out of preaching thinness as a way to holiness. And people followed as she started a giant church in the suburbs of Nashville, TN. Along the way she destroyed lives and her teachings even led to the death of at least one child and one teenager. Gwen Shamblin is a cautionary tale of what happens when a dynamic leader misrepresents the Bible and manipulates parishioners out of their money and relationships. It's a fascinating look at a world that was hiding in plain sight. If you like what you hear, be sure to rate and review us on iTunes or Facebook or leave us a voice message at the number below. Did you know that there is a $100 million industry aimed at teaching men how to manipulate women into bed? It's true and it's disgusting. It's time to explore purity culture and courtship in this documentary and given the length of the episode, you'll see that we had quite a bit to say about it. This is an NSFW episode as we openly discussed sex and the role of the Church as well as how we are going about teaching our young girls about the subject. You may also not want to listen to this one with your very young kiddos around.

This week Misty and Amarilys tackled a film chosen strictly for its location, Jasper Mall. The film documents a year in the life of a dying mall. Let's just say that we are big fans. . . This mall isn't just a building It's home to 25 years worth of business for a local florist, home to a young couple's courtship, home to an aging man's last years, and home for memories of people and events gone by. It's almost living and breathing and at this time, is holding on for dear life. . . We were privileged to speak with writers/producers/directors Bradford Thomason and Brett Whitcomb and are grateful for their time. It was a great chat and honestly, we had another hour's worth of questions but didn't want to push our luck . Moral of the story is this: WATCH JASPER MALL. . . Available on all Video on Demand platforms including iTunes and Amazon Prime and if you're anywhere within driving distance of Jasper, go visit and support the local merchants. They sure could use it. . Find Jasper Mall on Twitter: @jaspermall

We went old school this week with a documentary from 2010 that exposed deception on the internet and gave it the cute name "Catfish." Nev Schulman, Ariel Schulman, and Henry Joost document the relationship between Nev and 8 year old wunderkind, Abby. Abby paints canvases of Nev's beautiful photography and sends them to him as gifts. Nev soon develops relationships with Abby's mother and a romantic relationship with Abby's 19 year old sister. But is everyone who they say they are? . . This is a fascinating look at life on the internet and how easily we can build a world that appears perfect when the reality is much different. .

Tiger King took the world by storm just as quarantine began and served as a uniting force in the midst of an unprecedented trial. In this episode, Misty and Amarilys set the stage for the murder-for-hire+ story by talking about the main characters. You'll hear all about that B Carole Baskin, all the loves of Joe Exotic's life, a man with tattooed metal legs, and all the other citizens of Crazy Tigerland. . . In next week's On The Doc episode, we will hash out the adventures of all these people but in the meantime, get to know the people of Tiger King. . . Programming note: Misty and Amarilys are just two Southern Baptist girls from Alabama who always try to be respectful of everyone regardless of sex, age, race, religion, sexual preference, etc. In this episode, they refer to Saff as "he" because Saff has been on the record as preferring to use that pronoun. Please take no offense if they revert to "she" on accident occasionally during the discussion. They're just trying to keep up with culture and still be mindful of everyone's perspectives and beliefs. Crip Camp starts in 1971 at Camp Jened. A summer camp in New York, it is a "loose, free-spirited camp designed for teens with disabilities". The film focuses on campers who turned themselves into activists for the disability rights movement and fought for accessibility legislation. Misty/Amarilys summary: (said in between tears of joy and admiration) "These people are amazing and they have changed the world!" Streaming on Netflix. Not recommended for young children due to language and adult themes. The educational value is high for teenagers although parents may want to screen first. Directed by Jim LeBrecht
