It’s amazing to see that those closest to Christ still battled with doubt. From Peter to Thomas, men who swore their allegiance and their lives, yet still faced times of doubt and a lack of faith.
Today we come to the end of our series in Malachi as we examine the final words of the Old Testament. The last words from God to the people of Israel are filled with great hope, but also great fear. Malachi records the stern assurance that a judgment will come that will recognize both the wicked and the righteous. But even as God describes the reality of that judgment day, He tells of one who will come with “healing” and a promise that their names have been written in a “book of remembrance before Him”. What a promise! What a Savior!
Today we look at a passage in Malachi 3 that has traditionally been used to teach about tithing (giving) and supporting the ministry of the church. However, a close look at the text and we begin to see that the lack of giving was really just a symptom of a much larger issue. The people of God had left God!!! It is there that we see the gracious invitation of God to return to Him, and He will return to them. That invitation still holds true for us today!
Have you ever felt that your suffering was not only “unbearable”, but also “without purpose” ? Truth is, God often allows suffering in the lives of His children for a multitude of reasons. As the prophet Malachi address the Jewish people, he reminds them that God is a God who refines, but with purpose
Have you ever heard someone say, “It’s my own sin and what I do doesn’t really hurt others.”? The truth is, none of us live in isolation from others, especially those we care for. Part of Satan’s lie about our personal or private sin is that it doesn’t really affect those around us, but God says differently. Like a rock thrown into a pond, our sins have a “ripple effect” and those around us
As we continue our series from the book of Malachi, Chapter 2 expands God’s indictment of defiled worship by addressing the priests who were in charge. God held them accountable for allowing such complacent worship and the acceptance of defiled sacrifices. His rebuke of their actions is severe and direct while He reminds them of their call and responsibilities as established in Levitical law.
Have you ever wondered if Heaven is going to be boring if all we do is sit and worship God? I can promise you that it won’t be. With perfect bodies, minds and hearts, our worship in Heaven will never get tired of praising the only One who is worthy of our praise. Add the fact that we will finally see God in His fullness and not through a “glass darkly” as we do now, our worship will never be anything close to boring and repetitious. However, as we will see in Malachi this morning, we are all prone to complacency in worship.
Malachi 1:2-3 is one of the most challenging passages in the Bible for many people. We think of God as a God who loves so we are quite surprised when we read God say “that I hated Esau”. What does this mean? Is this simply something in the Old Testament that doesn’t apply to us in modern times? Why would God say that He hates someone? These are but a few of the many questions that this passage brings to those who have read it.
We start a new series on the Book of Malachi. Malachi has the distinction of being the last book of the Old Testament and the last “word” from God before 400 years of silence between the Old and New Testaments. The common phrase we see throughout the book is “says the Lord of hosts" as God addresses His concerns about empty religious activity, unfaithful priests, and yet, His faithful love and plans for His people.

If you are like most people, you find a lot of hope in a new year. There is something about a change of calendars and the freshness of starting over that brings out a sense of optimism in our hearts and minds. For the Christian, this hope is made possible in our new life in Christ and not just a turn of a calendar page. The Apostle Paul demonstrated this time and again as he spoke of hope and joy even when writing from a prison cell and awaiting his execution.
Have you ever thought or said, “This could not have come at a worse time!”? Often it seems as though trouble, tragedy, and trials enter our lives at the worse possible time, but let’s be honest, is there ever a good time for any of those to visit our lives? One of the most beautiful parts of the Christmas story is the claim in Galatians 4:4 that Christ came at the PERFECT time and yet to many intimately involved in that event, the timing probably didn’t seem all that PERFECT.
As we look closer to the story of Job we discover ways to find hope in the midst of times of waiting.
We will examine how God used various mountain “experiences” in the lives of many who sought to follow Him.
No one enjoys being “hated”, yet this was the very pronouncement that Jesus gave to His disciples just hours before His death. As followers of Christ, this is His decree to us as well.
