A candid interview with Harjit Singh, Canada's Minister of National Defence by Joe Spears the associate editor of frontline defence Magazine.

Commercial shipping is the conveyor belt of global economy and globalization. Canada needs a strong Navy to oversee global commons and Canada's access in the burgeoning foreign markets.

After symbolically cutting steel for the Royal Canadian Navy's new Joint Supply Ship (JSS), the Minister spoke candidly about Canada's need for a Bluewater Navy. Canada needs to look outward, and globally to find new markets for its exports. Canada's energy exports can no longer be solely focused on North America.

Canada must get more involved with its global defence partners to create stability in the supply chain and help safeguard the world's blue water highways. Tidewater access is just one piece of a maritime strategy for Canada’s future as a global energy supplier. Canada's Minister of Defence understands the emerging global situation from a international relations practioner's view and he led the development of strategies and marine expertise to help Canada be safe and secure in the international shipping arena.
