In this episode, we break down what Power Factor Correction (PFC) is actually doing inside an offline power supply. We will explain why bridge-rectifier front ends create distorted input current, how active boost PFC reshapes that waveform, and what engineers need to know about conduction modes, interleaving, EMI filters, and modern wide-bandgap topologies. It also connects classic PFC design practice with newer digital-control approaches in advanced energy systems. Isolated DC/DC supplies often fail late, not because the theory is wrong, but because creepage, transformer behavior, feedback drift, and compliance constraints show up when fixes are costly. Engineering Smarter Wireless Connectivity
Wireless systems don't fail because the radio is "wrong." More often, they underperform because the wireless technology choice itself doesn't match the application. Range falls short, latency creeps in, power consumption spikes, or reliability erodes; all before the first prototype ever leaves the lab. In this episode, we doscuss wireless decision‑making and break down when to use Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, proprietary wireless, or cellular. You'll learn how data rate, range, power budget, network topology, latency, certification, and total system cost all interact, and why optimizing for one parameter often creates hidden tradeoffs elsewhere. We'll also discuss where proprietary protocols make sense, when cellular becomes unavoidable, and why "it worked last time" is rarely a good design strategy. RF systems rarely fail in obvious ways. More often, performance erodes quietly; a dB here, a little range there, until designs no longer match expectations. In this episode, we discuss one of the most overlooked sources of RF loss: the transition from a controlled‑impedance PCB trace to a connector and coaxial cable.
You'll learn why "50 ohms" is a wave property, not a component value, how small geometry changes at the PCB‑to‑connector interface can create impedance discontinuities, and why connectors and cables should be treated as part of the transmission line, not mechanical afterthoughts. We'll also cover how cable selection, bend radius, mechanical stability, and prototype‑to‑production variability can quietly eat into your link budget, even when the radio and antenna are unchanged.
Whether you're designing your first RF system or chasing a few lost dB in a mature product, this episode breaks down the hidden risks and practical design considerations that help protect system margin before they show up in the field.

Designing with DC/DC converters often means relying on molded inductors for their small footprint and ability to withstand harsh environments. However, higher electrical and thermal stresses can gradually increase magnetic core loss due to insulation breakdown within the core material.
In this episode, we explain the percolation phenomenon, Würth Elektronik’s approach to understanding insulation degradation in molded inductors, and what it means for the long-term performance of your designs.

Humidity and temperature have always been critical for many components, and one of the most important are capacitors. Depending on the application, a wide variety of environmental conditions can occur. The location of use also determines the resulting humidity and temperature. An application in subtropical countries has a different demand on the components than the application in countries with more moderate climatic conditions. In the field of discrete mains filter, there are special components, and these components are designed for harsher environmental conditions. Although the majority of AC offline converters and switching converters that run from hazardous voltage, include galvanic isolation for safety, there are many applications where non-isolated circuits can be used. Where mechanical isolation protects the user and service personnel from contact with hazardous voltages, or for where both input and output voltage are on the primary side of isolated converters, the buck regulator and buckboost regulators are often more efficient, use less PCB area and cost less to implement than flyback regulators.

By filtering directly at the interface, interference emissions, electrostatic discharges and fast transients bursts are prevented from entering the system; thus negatively influencing the operating performance. To verify the EMC properties of electrical systems, special tests are carried out in accredited EMC test laboratories, and if these tests are not passed, the application has to be revised. In order to simplify this process, an adapter stick was designed which contains a complete filter circuit for the selected application and can be plugged into the appropriate interface. Choosing the appropriate components is vital for the efficiency of DC/DC switching regulators with relatively high input and output currents. A high-efficiency switching regulator is market-ready if it, and the end product, comply with all necessary EMC standards; meaning more filters must be included at the input and output to reduce interference. With high input and output currents, it is difficult to find a compromise between the efficiency, size, damping and cost of the filter, and the actual performance level. In this podcast, based on an Application Note, we use the example of a 100 W buck-boost DC/DC design to outline the considerations, layout and components necessary to find such a compromise. The world of technology is ever changing. Wide bandgap power semiconductor devices like Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFETs are enjoying growing popularity in many modern power electronic applications like E-mobility and renewable energy. Their extremely fast switching speed capability helps to increase efficiency and reduce the overall size and cost of the system. However, fast switching together with high operating voltages and increasing switching frequencies presents important challenges to the gate driver system. Rugged galvanic isolation, compliance with safety standards, control signal noise immunity and EMI performance- Those are just some of the most important aspects that designers need to consider.
An optimal design of the isolated auxiliary supply providing the voltage and current levels to drive the SiC or GaN device is critical to help the full gate driver system meet the many requirements set by state-of-the-art applications. And today we're going to explore this design.
