When you first meet Dr. Robin Sargent she might intimidate you... I mean she's so well put together, she's direct, and there's this aura of confidence about her. Then she somehow disarms you with that contagious laugh of hers and you feel completely at ease.
Robin is a successful entrepreneur, instructional designer and mom of three boys. I loved digging into her journey, because I think the lessons from how she approaches life are spectacular and valuable for both men and women.
In this interview we talked about perseverance, investing in yourself, academia vs. corporate, her work and much much more... hope you enjoy and share.

Here is my hypothesis about feedback given to learners... It falls on deaf ears, at best they quickly skip over it to get to the next good part, or at worst they feel annoyed with it and resent the designer for being so patronizing. Let's talk about how to avoid this situation.

Conflict is a beautiful thing, it's the thing that makes the story worthwhile... if there was no conflict there'd be no story. But this might be the most challenging part of your interactive experience... but it doesn't have to involve other scenes, other people, high drama... sometimes the best conflict is all in our characters head.

My number one issue was overcomplicating stories, but also not asking enough why questions - why does the hero want this? Why are they not going after it right now? What's getting in their way? All of these help you craft a better hero that all kinds of people can relate to, and help your story have meaning and stickiness in their minds. Inner motivation is really the key to creating a relatable character in my opinion. Enjoy this last episode on the "hero" but certainly not the last on storytelling!
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

The Hero is very important to a successful story, but the hero is nothing without a very clear and visible goal. Or as the storytelling nerds say... the outer motivation. So how should you think about this to make your hero and their goal something your audience will root for?

THE SCENARIO SECRETS PODCAST
I had a great convo with Rued Riis, "the Vyond guy" as we lovingly call him in the L&D world... and I had a couple of aha moments around the use of storyboards. The conversation really solidified in my mind that a storyboard has a place, but to be honest, it is relegated to the back seat (and probably used if your focus is dressing up content, not actually sharing a meaningful story)...different strategy/tool for different outcomes. Enjoy!

Getting attached to one kind of solution, or one kind of mindset, something I call being a "purist", will hurt you, will hurt how creative you are in your solutions. I had fallen into this trap, and realised that through more exploration and deep conversation with people practicing a different "purism" I might augment my own practice with their approach.
THE SCENARIO SECRETS PODCAST
Sometimes you just gotta go back to the roots. That’s what I did in this episode.. How I got started with instructional design, why scenarios resonated so much with me and all the wacky adventures along the way.
This is episode one of 6 that gets into the roots of my freelancing career, how and why I created Broken Co-Worker, and continue to evolve my Narrative Scenario Design practice. The biggest goal is to help you overcome some of your limiting beliefs about what can and can’t be done…how creative you can be, how proud you can be of the work you love. Honestly, if this immigrant kid can, so can you.

Most of my worst projects happened when I was trying to be too creative. When I was trying to reinvent every single aspect of development... starting from a blank page. Over time I learned there are ways to be creative, and deliver an outstanding product while placing massive constraints. I want to share that strategy with you today. Have you had a habit that held you back from living your best life? I know I sound like a life coach here, but discovering this one limiting mind habit has been a huge aha for me. I sometimes wish I could go back in time and change things. What I said. What I did. But now I realize that all this was a result of what I thought. About myself, about the situation, about limitations... and I brought that with me everywhere I went. Your reality will reflect what you believe and expect. Want to change how your creative projects work out? Change what you believe about how they'll turn out first. Easy to say. More difficult to do. Now this aha came slowly. But it became clear that I was not the only one holding this limiting thought habit after I worked with my coaching clients. I found some people had all the luck with clients, all the creative freedom... while others struggled to get an inch. I discuss this and great examples in this episode. Hope you find it useful! Until next time my lovely learning designers! In this episode I share two powerful experiences that introduced me to scenarios and interactive storytelling. One was from Allen Interactions GANGS: PATROL E-LEARNING and the other was Connect With Haji Kamal from Kinection Studios.
I also discussed Kolb’s Learning Cycle… how I think it beautifully fits with this style of learning. Check it out, I think you'll love the thinking behind it. It's a game changer. Finally, I discuss the strategies you can use to convince stakeholders to embrace these new ideas.

Story: Feeling like you have a great portfolio idea but, no idea where to start building your portfolio piece?
Well, that's exactly where my client John used to be!
He had done the hard work of deciding to transition out of K-12 Education and knew it was time help with business problems.
It was time to take his experience and put it to a different use, but he needed clarity, guidance, and support to create that portfolio piece he felt he needed!
John knew he had a choice to make: "figure it out himself" and build a traditional course, or make something special and join the program.
He had everything in place, it was just a matter of executing and being with the right people, right ideas, and putting it all together.
Recently, I sat down to chat with John.
So if you're ready to hear how he was able to make a career transition, to invest in himself and join my coaching program, then watch his interview now!

What if your training content is already good enough? That's the question. Maybe revamping something is not where your effort should be spent. Maybe you need to consider how people feel about the content and training you've developed. If they haven't been sold on the learning journey, they don't even know it exists. So even if you're using the latest engagement strategies in your training.... if people are not inclined to check it out (because their world already makes sense) why spend all your effort on a losing battle?

Today I am sharing a story is about losing your passion for what you do and then taking that and moving it into some other place. About Praveena's Interactive Story: Colors of the Rainbow - The intention of this story is to encourage the non-LGBTQ employees to become accepting of LGBTQ individuals at the workplace, and to understand that they could have an unconscious bias and are discriminating against others based on that bias. The main idea of the interactive story is to change the perception of the non-LGBT employees so that a safe space can be created for LGBTQ individuals to come out, should they choose to, and to simply be who they are, without having a fear of being judged.

Kimberly created her Interactive Story, Workplace War Zone, as part of a digital marketing campaign for her client, EmC Leaders. Players acquire new emotional intelligence (EQ) skills as they make decisions that lead to one of three possible endings. The story is designed to introduce potential customers to the company's proprietary Emotional Connection (EmC) process. At the end of the story, players are invited to purchase an emotional intelligence Master Class through the EmC Leaders website.

Bit of a rant! Here I go over a couple of examples that if we applied to them the same "success criteria" that we apply to our learning interventions, we might consider them EPIC Fails. And what to consider instead.

I had one of my subscribers send in a question about how do you measure the performance of your interactive story. How do you show your interactive story actually delivered on its promises? Here I suggest a different approach, a tiny approach, a more quantifiable and contextual way to look at measuring the performance and ROI of our learning interventions.

Coming up with meaningful scenarios, that are contextual, mean things to people, resonate with them personally.. is impossible UNLESS you tap into subject matter experts and practitioners. I give you several questions you can ask to get you started on the right path - you should not be coming up with these yourself, let the practitioner do al the work.

What if you're stuck in a workplace that is not receptive to your creative ideas? Should you leave? Should you just suck it up? These are some of the questions one of my subscribers shared with me and here I give her ideas on how I'd handle this situation. No theory here, just practical from the trenches advice. We can get all excited about the survey satisfaction ratings as much as we like. But we all know this is just an ego game, it has nothing to do with real results and moving people to helpful action. On the other hand, we put pressure on single interventions to turn around a sales quarter or to increase employee retention - like we are some kind of gods that can predictably control outcomes. What I suggest is something in the middle. Something measurable, meaningful and something that suggests a long term view of where your interactive story or any learning intervention fits in the road to behaviour change.

We can use the best tech, the sexiest layouts the most en vogue colour palette.. but if the character and the situations they're going through suck... you'll end up like another Hollywood Blockbuster FLOP. In this episode, I offer some insights on how to create a compelling character that people actually care about enough to follow through to the end of your interactive story.

This is a case study of the project that Don, one of our Interactive Storytelling Members is putting together. It is completely not in the corporate learning realm, in fact, it's in the personal development and coaching realm. Don is a coach and he wanted to create an interactive story that would help people see other possibilities when dealing with family issues (especially ones about religion)... and also make them aware that he's able to help them if they need guidance. When that story is live I will add the link below, until then enjoy this case study!

An interactive story is a persuasion piece. But, it never functions alone, it is meant to help someone take the next step. It is meant to be a catalyst for action. In this episode, I discuss the project from one of our members Kristin. She's crafting an interactive story for many reasons, one being getting good at storytelling, another pushing herself creatively, another being that it would represent (in her portfolio) more of the work she's excited about doing.
Her interactive story is also helping her explore what it means to struggle as a creative who has pressure from work to stay connected and produce results. The goal is to produce a piece that helps people see a different possibility, and solve a real problem for those that want to be more creative and intentional with their time - while being a rockin' (and highly shareable) piece for Kristin to share as part of her portfolio.

In this episode, I discuss the project one of my students, Talvi, put together. The challenge was to help call centre staff overcome some of their past beliefs about what customer service "means", and what it means to deliver great service while still meeting quotas and KPI's. The interactive story also meant to give them a boost in confidence by asking them to go through some difficult situations that could have been prevented or diminished if the lead character was able to make decisions based on accurate data and the right motivation.

The organisation I was working with already had robust resources to support it's people through onboarding, performance support and beyond. The challenge was about beliefs about when those resources are to be used, who is to use them and how that affects staff retention. Interactive story to the rescue to address some of those limiting beliefs! Enjoy!

Review of a recent Interactive Story project for a humanitarian organization. There is a challenge when hiring seasoned professionals, they come in with all kinds of experience, but also baggage, beliefs that hold them back from being fully engaged. This organisation decided to tackle this from day one and use an interactive story to shake up the narrative and give their audience some "aha" moments.

Just because your interactive story has a "character who has a desire" doesn't mean you're going to actually craft a story that people care about and will want to finish. In this episode, I go into a secret, not so secret strategy on how to amp up your story so people care. We get into some fun examples from the movie Shrek (if you have not seen Shrek 1 AND 2 - you have to see them now!)

When I first started as an instructional designer and freelancer I thought more was more. More engagement, more interactivity, more excitement... but that wore me out. And I hated taking on new projects because all the scope was up in the air. Then I discovered an activity that was great and used only one kind of interaction, this changed my world.
