What can we learn about our human experience and psychology when we look at animal behaviour and evolution? Tune in for an in-depth look at how the prevalence of certain characteristics in other animals can ultimately help humans to better understand themselves.

The belief that you are an entity that is separate from everything that surrounds you is false. You may look at yourself in the mirror and disagree – you most certainly appear to have boundaries that are distinct from the objects and people around you. But reality isn’t always as it seems – and luckily for us, science is starting to show these connections. For example, the energy from your heart radiates many feet out from your body and – as we learned in Ep.159 - when you put your feet on the earth, it changes the viscosity of your blood. Tune in to learn how we need to reconceptualize reality for a better future for all of humanity, Mother Earth, and future generation.

From where does consciousness originate? Many people would intuitively say from the brain – your head brain to be more specific. But, in fact, humans have three brains: the head brain, the gut brain and the heart brain. Each plays a critical role in your human experience. In fact, some argue that we (humans) would benefit from getting our head brain out of the way, so that we can experience reality in a more imaginative, intuitive, and heart-centred way. Tune in to learn more!

What does reality mean to you? Understanding what reality is and how it is created + perceived is not an easy topic to discuss. What if everything we have been taught is leading us in the wrong direction? In our current day society, we live predominantly in a distracted state and are becoming more disconnected than ever. We are disconnected from our core selves. We are disconnected from our fellow human beings. And we are disconnected from nature. How can we create more conscious awareness in our daily lives, so we can begin to awaken and experience reality in a new way? To help us learn more, Dr. Howard Eisenberg is back on the show to talk more in-depth about his fascinating book – Dream it to do it.

What does reality mean to you and how do you think it is created? Do you ever wonder how or why you are here? What does being “here” even mean? Each and every one of us holds the ability to alter the reality that we are collectively experiencing. This may feel far fetched for some, but awakening your consciousness to this inherent capacity is required. Are you up for the challenge? Our guest – Dr. Howard Eisenberg – invites us to take a daring plunge into a different way of perceiving the world than we have been taught.

In order to love the skin you’re in, you need to quiet the busyness of your critical mind and connect with your true essence. Your mind is a very busy place. What often blocks us from “loving the skin we’re in” is the voice inside that is quick to pass judgement and criticize. By quieting the mind, you can tune into your true self – also known as your higher self. In this episode, we're sharing an interview that Dr. Andrea did in Sherry Jibb’s "Love the Skin You’re In: Women’s Empowerment Series." Tune in!

There are many well-known bad habits for the heart such as drinking too much alcohol, not exercising, smoking and eating unhealthy foods. Some lesser-known bad habits, include lack of sleep, stress, and held in emotions. To keep your heart healthy, consider some alternative approaches – such as going barefoot and grounding (also known as earthing). This is an amazingly simple concept that involves nothing more than reconnecting the human body with the energy that is naturally present in the ground we walk on. Grounding has many physical benefits that lead to a healthy heart, including decreasing inflammation, lowering stress and moderating heart rate variability. Tune in to learn more!

The choices and behaviours that you engage in daily impact how your body functions as a system. For example, sugar triggers the release of dopamine in the brain – which feels good. But, over time, your dopamine system can get reset – resulting in dopamine levels that dip below the baseline and lead to sugar cravings. By taking care of your health – every day – your body and brain can be set up to thrive. Autophagy, for one, is a process of cellular housekeeping and your body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells.

Your mindset consists of a series of perceptions and beliefs that you hold about yourself. What you believe about your abilities and your capacity to learn + grow will ultimately dictate how much you can evolve in this life. The concept of fixed vs. growth mindset was first introduced by Carol S. Dweck in her seminal book: "Mindset: The new Psychology of Success". A fixed mindset can keep you stuck, whereas – a growth mindset views challenges and struggles as an opportunity for transformation. Join me to learn more!

A habit is formed when a behaviour becomes automatic and takes place without much conscious thought or effort. In this way, habits play a significant role in your life because your brain thrives off of automaticity. If your mind can set something on default, it will – because the more you put on your mental plate, the more overwhelmed your brain will become. Habits are fundamental if you want to improve your lifestyle and integrate new behaviours that will support your health journey.

How do you measure your mental health? Mental health includes your emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how you think, feel, and act. And it can also help determine how you handle stress. Mental health isn’t static. It can ebb and flow given the life circumstances that you are currently trying to manage. Identifying your own – personal – mental health status and taking care of yourself and your needs as they arise is an important skill to have.

Listen to Dr. Andrea's interview with Sherry Jibb for her "Happy & Healthy in Midlife Summit." A favourite part was talking about how feelings of overwhelm cue your brain to go into protector mode. Use the science of how your brain works to overcome feelings of overwhelm so you can take on your big goals and aspirations. Your brain will always try to keep you safe and out of danger; so, it will avoid anything that is perceived as challenging. Call your brain out and work WITH it (instead of against it).

Tapping (or Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a tool used to help reduce emotional distress, worry, stress, etc. This technique involves using your fingertips to tap along specific points on the body (primarily on the head and face) in a particular sequence. While tapping, the individual focuses on the issues they wish to address. Meridian tapping is based on the principles of acupuncture and has even been referred to as psychological acupressure. Your energy is being exchanged with every breath, feeling, and heartbeat. When you feel love ~ that is energy. It has been said that love is the frequency of the universe. But, they witness their pain showing up whenever they get triggered or feel overwhelmed. As humans, we have become accustomed to numbing out unpleasant feelings; but, beauty + peace can bloom on the other side of pain. For the most part, you breathe without conscious awareness. But, when you bring conscious awareness to your breath, you can open new avenues of communication with yourself. Intentional breathing is the foundation of growth, connection, healing + transformation. Your breath has the power to give you access to a deeper part of your existence. Breathwork is a practice of using the breath to create the space to ‘feel’, to respond instead of react, to notice instead of numb, and connect instead of distract.

There are great variations in life expectancy between different parts of the world; but, the global average of human life expectancy is higher today than it was in any country in 1950. What "aging well" means is different today than it has been at any other point in human history. As a society, we’re moving away from conceptualizing aging from a perspective of decline, and when discussing "life span", the focus is no longer fixated on adding years to life but instead adding life to our years.

The importance of gut health to your overall health and well-being cannot be overstated. There is a literal connection between your gut and brain via the vagus nerve. Your vagus nerve is like a highway between your central nervous system (including your brain) and your organs (such as your heart, lungs, spleen, liver, intestines, etc.). Your mood and well-being are directly impacted by the microbiome in your gut. What is happening in your gut influences the gut itself, as well as the entire body + brain.

Hearing loss affects many adults as they age. While the impact of hearing loss on health is varied, the relationship between hearing and cognition is notable. When it gets harder to hear information, you have to recruit additional brain areas to help you understand what you're hearing. A 10-decibel difference in hearing is equivalent to being two years older in terms of mental performance (e.g., memory). Identifying and treating hearing loss should be a priority because of its impact on cognitive decline.

The human brain undergoes normal age-related changes. After age 60, your brain's memory centre starts to shrink (~1% per year). Keeping an active lifestyle and moving your body regularly can help protect your brain. Also, stay mentally stimulated by challenging your mind, getting out of your comfort zone, and learning new things that are of interest to you. Research points to the added benefits of combining brain and body exercises to improve your brain's function. Tune in to learn more!

Research demonstrates the existence of racial disparities in health. Specifically, older black adults show an earlier onset of chronic conditions and more rapid declines in health than their white counterparts. One explanation for these health disparities is socioeconomic inequalities. For example, poorer quality schooling and not owning a home can affect access to healthcare and, therefore, health. Dr. Peter Whitehouse (author of "The Myth of Alzheimer's" and the forthcoming "American Dementia") reminds us that Alzheimer's disease is not a single biological condition – but a collection of many conditions that affect cognition (e.g., memory). Also, features of Alzheimer's disease (e.g., plaques and tangles) are present in the brains of many (if not most) adults as they age, suggesting the lines between pathological and non-pathological aging may not be as clear cut as originally anticipated.
