On this episode, I talk with Teshorn and Reytheda Jackson, Toni Black, and Chip Dizard. We get real about what it's like to be a person of color in the photography and planning industry. Each person I talked with shared their own personal experiences and stories. These are REAL people with real families and lives. And these are the hard conversations that we need to be having. I encourage you to listen. Hear what they have to say, and take it to heart. A good place to start is reading this blog post about solidarity from Toni's blog.

I really enjoyed interviewing Dylan and Corey. These guys really know their stuff! I personally have their SEO course and have learned so much. Everyone talks about SEOs and wants to use them, but so many people don't actually know how. Dylan and Corey give great advice on how to use SEOs to generate traffic to your website. (SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization). Google is generally the search engine people think of most often, but YouTube is actually a highly used search engine that a lot of people don't take advantage of. Dylan and Corey give some great advice on using YouTube to your advantage. They also talk about important aspects of building a website or blogging to keep in mind when thinking about SEOs. We also spend time talking about backlinks and getting on websites that have authority and the way that Google works as a search engine.

You can join Dylan and Corey's facebook group Fuel Your Photos. You can find out more about the SEO course here.

Wow. Steve Saporito is just incredible! He is so passionate about PEOPLE.... what makes them who they are, and how they relate to and see others around them. Photographers are in a unique position to help clients create connections between themselves and their families and friends. He teaches photographers to really get to know their clients, so that they can capture the essence of who they are in the photographs. Ask them questions, find out why they chose their fiancé to be the one they want to spend the rest of their lives with, what makes their mom or dad special to them, what qualities do they see in their children... These things help make you a better photographer and allows you to capture them and what they are looking for in their pictures.

There are so many more great things to take away from this episode! Definitely give it a listen and go look Steve up at https://stevesaporitoeducation.com/

Also, Tuesday March 10th is the last day to get my Wedding Photography Master Course. It is packed full of practical information to help you grow your business and be a successful wedding photographer. You don't want to miss out! Ashlyn has so many amazing things to share on this episode! I am so thankful that she is willing to be open and vulnerable and share some of her experiences and how she overcame them. Ashlyn took a leap of faith in starting her business and sought advice and counsel from other people in the business. They helped her find the 'Ashlyn shaped hole' in the photography industry. Ashlyn found her place in copyrighting. She helps creatives use their words in addition to their content to draw people to their websites and generate the kind of clients you are looking for.

She has some great tips on how to build your website and make it flow so that people can find what they are looking for and see themselves in your story.

It was such a pleasure getting to chat with her and get to know her and her business a little better. She is definitely someone you're going to want to follow!

I learned so much from talking with Scott in this episode! He has so many great lead ideas for all different types of photographers. I like how he said that you want to make it attract and attractive. I'm excited to use some of his tips myself to generate more leads.

Scott also talks about how he only does photography part time. This is so refreshing! That you can still be involved in something that you love, but it doesn't have to be your sole source of income and your only job. Scott is super practical, he doesn't like events, so why would he have a full time job where he has to always attend events? I think it is so important to know yourself and find ways to do the things that you love in a way that doesn't burn you out or force you into situations that you wouldn't typically enjoy anyways. Scott is able to be selective about the clients that he accepts. He also networks with other photographers to refer clients to, therefore building good relationships with both other photographers and clients.

There are so many other great things to say, but you should definitely just hear it from Scott himself and check out this episode!

In this episode, I chat with Davey Jones - marketer, content strategist, and relationship builder. I met Davey at the United Conference last year, and I always look forward to spending time with him! He has such an eclectic background and has a lot of great insight to share. Davey takes his experiences and lessons that he has learned in his previous jobs and uses them in his current situations. He would encourage you to do the same - think about what went well in those instances and what could have been done better, and use that knowledge in your current position. We spend a lot of time on this podcast talking about building a successful website. It is important to have a website and/or social media that showcases who you are.

Davey has two questions that he feels you need to be able to answer in any situation:

  1. Are you good at what you do?
  2. Can you get results for someone like me? (Meaning everyone thinks that their business or their situation is unique, so they see you are good at what you do, but can you get those results for their specific situation).

You can establish your ability to get results for 'people like them' on your website, and Davy gives you tips in this episode for how to do that. Also, check out his podcast Brands that Book with Davy Jones for more great podcasts (I'm on episode 70).

Wow, I have so much respect for our two guests today, John Bunn (who runs https://www.wildoakfilms.com/) and Nick Miller (who runs http://redeemedproductions.com/).

They are such great examples of what it looks like to do things with excellence and to genuinely care about client experience! They also do an amazing job of helping other photographers and videographers hone their skills and continue to develop and improve. John and Nick chose to collaborate and learn from each other, as opposed to charging for mentorship. Mentorship isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but in this instance, they realized that they could learn more from a long term partnership of learning and collaborating than just a one day monetary mentorship transaction. They understand the value that other people can give you, and encourage people to humbly ask for help in areas where other people excel. Feedback is what can help you grow! We cover so much in this episode. They share about the importance of doing things well and doing them consistently. They encourage you to be confident in your abilities and therefore your pricing, you are worth it! We talk about how our culture is becoming more and more video-centric, and how using videos (or even picture slideshows) can greatly extend your reach and influence on social media. John and Nick talk about how Videography is such a special way to capture a wedding day because it not only captures that one moment, but includes the sounds and emotions of it. You don’t want to miss this episode, it is jam packed with great stuff!

John and Nick also have a podcast, “How To Film Weddings”, you should check it out! They also have a free workshop coming up on January 7th that you should definitely take advantage of at https://www.howtofilmweddings.com/freeworkshops. You should also check out their facebook group, https://www.facebook.com/groups/howtofilmweddings/

In this episode I talk with Bryan Caporicci. I am so thankful for Bryan! His podcast helped me so much when I was first starting out, and he has so much amazing knowledge to share. I could have talked with him for hours! Bryan shares about how he started out in computer science and eventually transitioned into photography. Bryan has since been very involved in the photography industry. He has his own photography company, and has platforms to teach other photographers. This includes his awesome podcast, and a program he developed called Sprout Studio, that integrates all of the systems a photographer could need.

Bryan is passionate about having a good work life balance for himself. I love how he says "We should be building a business that serves our life, and not a life that serves our business."

We talk about the dangers of comparison, about deciding whether to scale your business, and about the importance of empathy.

After listening to this podcast, Bryan encourages you to take some time to decide how you want to apply what you've heard to your life. What will you take away, and what will you do with it? This is great advice not only for this podcast, but for any information that you take in.

You can find him on Instagram @BCapPhoto

Also, The Kreativ Summit will be here before you know it! It's going to be an amazing time, you don't want to miss it.

You should also come be a part of our photography community on Facebook. It's a great place to get ideas and ask questions.

In this episode I had the privilege of talking to Phil Porto. Phil Porto runs The Portos, a wedding photography company spanning 3 states -Florida, New York, and now North Carolina. Phil talks about what it takes to have a team of associates who represent what your company and brand stand for. No one is going to do it exactly the way you do, but you should have some non-negotiables as a brand that your team members all operate by. An example for The Portos is capturing real moments. Phil really takes the time to mentor and grow his team and give them opportunities. He has built a culture of support and trust and genuinely wants to see everyone on his team succeed. We also talk about the pros and cons of having associates that are salaried verses contracted.

Phil is such an awesome, down-to-earth guy, and while his business is booming and he has won awards, he still realizes what is the most important in life, and prioritizes time with family and friends.  He is such an inspiration!

Phil will be at the Kreativ Summit in Orlando January 27-29.

In this episode, I interview Matt Barnett, founder and CEO of Bonjoro. Matt started out as a photographer and considers himself a creative at heart. When he moved to Australia he decided to get his MBA. His first business was a tech business that didn’t work out. Two additional companies, including Bonjoro, came out of that. Matt shares how Bonjoro was started, as well as some of the things that he has learned throughout the process of starting his business as a creative. He has some really great advice, and if you're thinking of starting up a company, you should definitely listen!

In this episode, I talk with Ben Chernivsky. Ben is an incredible photographer and business owner, and he has so much great information to share about that. But today we are going a different (and equally as important) route, focusing on the importance of self awareness, and how that impacts all parts of your life, including your business. Ben lives his life with the intention of taking action. He is able to do that by scheduling everything, surrounding himself with the right kind of support, and keeping his mind and body healthy. Ben works in super intense 30 minute increments, then makes sure to take time for mental breaks, doing things he enjoys like roasting his own coffee in his garage. He has found benefits from going to counseling with his wife. They have learned how to communicate, and found out each of their roles in the family, realizing neither role is more important. Exercising and eating healthy play a big role in Ben’s life, and he sees these as preventative measures to keep himself healthy. While Ben runs incredibly successful businesses, he says, “To me, your business is a supplement to get you buy in this weird world that we live in right now, it is not a measure of success”. He believes that it is so important to find happiness within yourself, and that no one is perfect, everyone is a work in progress. Your business is a reflection of you, so taking care of your mental and physical health keeps you from carrying baggage into your business. It has been so refreshing to talk about these things with Ben! Self awareness is such an important topic that directly affects your business, so don't neglect it!

Ben will be joining us at the Kreativ Summit in Orlando January 27-29, 2020. http://kreativsummit.com/

If you are interested in elopement photography, you do not want to miss this! In this episode, I talk with Maddie Mae, a destination adventure elopement photographer and educator based out of Colorado. She is the founder of the elopement photography collective, Adventure Instead and the education brand, Adventure Instead Academy.

After 5 years photographing big wedding days, she found herself burnt out and jaded with the performance and production of big weddings, and saw many couples get lost among the family obligations and expectations, wasteful stuff and trash, anxiety and stress, and forced pointless traditions.

That all changed when she photographed her first elopement. Immediately she knew that it was her greatest passion to help couples be their truest selves on the day they get married and to bring the focus of their wedding day back to what truly matters: their relationship & celebrating their commitment to each other in an authentic & meaningful way.

She took the leap to go “all in” and specialized her business in elopements in 2015. Applying the proven tools & strategies she learned studying business marketing in college, she booked 30 dream adventurous elopements in the following year, and had a 6-figure income—while transitioning her brand to the incredibly niche, pro-elopement brand that it is today. Now, 4 years later, she runs a Rangefinder-award-winning, kickass team of 3 adventurous female photographers (herself, Amber, & Tori), who together—travel to over 15 countries a year, helping over 100 eloping couples bring their vision of their own intimate & meaningful wedding experiences to life.

Their mission is to give couples permission to do everything they truly want on their wedding day, create a safe space for them to be themselves, and guide them toward their unforgettable “just us” wedding day experience.

Maddie also embodies this mission through her education brand, Adventure Instead Academy—by teaching photographers how to book more elopements and serve eloping couples. In 2019 she created the first ever all-in-one business & marketing online course that teaches everything needed to know to become an elopement photographer. Her course will be available for sale again November 26 - December 3, 2019 at adventureinsteadacadmey.com

She also runs a free educational facebook group for adventurous elopement & wedding photographers at facebook.com/groups/weddingsandwanderlust

I really enjoyed talking with Maddie and getting a chance to hear about all of the incredible insight she has for elopement photographers. This girl has passion! Make sure to check her out.

I've recently discovered that there is a lot to be learned from books! Because books have been so thought out and edited, they have a way of really maximizing efficiency by organizing and clarifying information. I spend a lot of time in the car, so I downloaded audible and started listening! In this podcast, I fill you in on my main takeaways from the first 3 books I've listened to: Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek, Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki, and High Performance Habits by Brendon Burchard. These books have some great insight and I am excited to share them with you!

I'm excited because today, we're going to revitalize our culture hack series. Today we're going to talk about talk about the top trends in 2019 for Instagram as you move your business forward, so I'm really pumped. And so because of that, today's podcast episode is sponsored by the Instagram For-Profit Coursethat we have. It is currently $149 in the shop. So check that out at anchoredshop.com.

We've had a ton of people get this who are not just photographers out there and it's helped them to make money. It's helped them to grow their business diving into Instagram and all of those things. And so if you want to check that out, make sure that you go to anchoredshop.comand use the code podcastto get 15% off of that course.

Alright, so you know me and you know my Instagram strategy and it's just kind of a no BS approach to Instagram. So like, I'm just gonna shoot it straight with you guys, because that's what I believe in, like, I don't want to sugarcoat it. I don't want to be like, Oh, hey, you guys just making that feed and do all these things because, like, I think it's actually moving away from that. So let's go ahead and jump right into it off the bat.

IGTV 2:00

Number one IGTV. Historically, IGTV has been something that like, we thought it was going to be huge. We thought it was going to be the next YouTube we thought it was going to be like Facebook video, all this stuff like it was going to come out of nowhere and just eliminate all these things. And it ended up being just like a complete dud. Right? Like, think about it yourself. When's the last time you watched the IGTV video? You haven't, but if you learn one thing about Instagram, it's that they are persistent in their ideas and their goals. Just think back when they first started stories, right? When they started stories a little while ago, people said, "this isn't gonna compare to Snapchat", and it ended up being different. The same thing happened with their stories and then they kind of revitalized it, jacked Snapchat, like just completely stole it and then made it their own (kind of) and now it's the biggest thing moving forward. So in 2019 it's definitely one of the biggest things that you guys need to be aware of and I think that same thing is going to happen with IGTV. I think they're going to come up with a little more of a robust "search engine" type way to go through, maybe even in the Explore tab. You could go to the Explore tab and you could search specifically in IGTV. I think they also may allow you to subscribe to certain IGTV channels and to be able to search for relevant content within the Explore tab, especially if their next big next move is going to be taking over YouTube.

The Importance of Making Long Form Content There's a lot of value in creating long form content if IGTV So if you are a photographer, maybe create a portfolio video. Maybe you're a videographer, then you could create some really cool content that people can start to follow. But even if you're not a videographer, maybe you're a calligrapher or you're a mom and pop shop that sells t-shirts. Maybe your long-form content can be behind-the-scenes videos and building a personal brand behind you and what you do. As they figure out how to be able to put more content in front of people and keep them on the platform rather than going to something like YouTube to find long long-form content, IGTV will do better, so it's definitely something to look for.

Organic Reach Going Down I think organic reach is going downhill fast. That's just going to be something that you need to understand -- Instagram is going to be pay for play. It's a free platform. It's been a free platform. And so as a business person, they've done a great job like, this is the ultimate Gary Vee Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook. They've given so much for free for so long and now they're starting to say, "if you want to continue to use this as a business, then you're going to have to pay to play", and it really makes sense from a business standpoint. And so in 2019, your organic reach is going to continue to go down, and you're going to continue to need to pay to play. I also think aesthetic and feed are going to be less important than Instagram stories I think stories are where a lot of the engagement will happen. Let's be honest, where do you spend the majority of your time when you watch or when you're on Instagram, it's not even scrolling through the feeds anymore. Like that's more where you want to begin engagement because also that engagement is a lot more personal and we'll talk about that in the DM as well and in a little bit trends are moving towards stories and away from post so just be aware of that in 2019 as you think about your strategy in that it's not as much about the the defeat and how pretty the feed was.

Buying Likes and Followers 10:00 I think Instagram is going to crack down on buying likes and followers and they are going to start suspending, banning and penalizing a lot of these accounts that are paying for likes and followers because influencers are doing that to gain money from brands. Instagram wants to make sure they can keep it as pure of a platform as possible. So be aware of that because you know those brands that have 4 million followers and 40 likes on their photos. We've all seen it, don't be that brand.

Hashtags Hashtags aren't going to be a big deal anymore. Hashtags can now be followed and while I think it's going to be a good way to consume some content, it's not necessarily going to be a good way to gain mass followers anymore. But you can still have certain people find you because of hashtags. So still make sure you guys are using those hashtags, but they don't carry as much weight as they used to. If you are going to use hashtags, I think you can do a couple different things. So Gary Vee has this rule. It's called the $1 dollar 80 cent rule where he says, "I want to put in my two cents on a bunch of different posts in a hashtag". So he'll go to a hashtag, put his two cents on this person's post and put a legitimate comment on there that's not pre-made, and that will gain him new followers and likes because you're actually building up a community and not just going and trying to take. If you are going and trying to find new people to engage with, you can also do this with whatever you think your target audience would be hash-tagging. And that's a great way to get new clients awareness because at the end of the day, what we really need and what we use social media for is to gain awareness and attention on our brand.

Instagram DMs I think direct messages in Instagram are going to increase. They are constantly coming out with new things to use in the DMs. For example, you can now voice memo people in the DMs as well as video chatting and send photos (either Snapchat style or where it stays in chat). like they are constantly revitalizing the DMs and doing more research and development on it. And don't expect 2019 to be any different because they want people to stay in the app. They want to replace text messaging, they want to replace things like WhatsApp and Snapchat. Just because it's a DM doesn't mean that that doesn't take into consideration with the algorithm. They want to know how you're engaging with the community and how the community is engaging with you. So every time somebody engages with one of your stories, or engages with something that you say in the story, or you engage with them, that takes into consideration with the algorithm. And so make sure that you guys are utilizing that well and sliding into the DMs. Messaging and responding to people positively puts a positive picture of your brand in people's minds and in turn can lead to more engagement and bookings. So for example, I love Major League baseball and we have gotten inquiries from a lot of Major League Baseball players fiancé's because I will find these girls on Instagram that are dating these major league players. Maybe they don't have a huge following and I begin engaging with them on their posts and DMs, which creates a really positive relationship with them. So when they get engaged, I'm the first person they go to, so we've got a really cool clientele because of that.

E-commerce on Instagram I think that buying things directly on Instagram is going to become really big next year. I think Instagram also wants to take over e-commerce and they want you to be able to have a one stop shop from your phone. And so if you are if you sell any kind of product in 2019, you need to make sure you go into your settings and setting it up that so that you can directly sell from your account. They just launched it where you can be able to go in and buy from stories, so that people who want to be able to go in and buy from one place can. If they see it on Instagram, they're more likely to buy it from you. And that's a statistic that they've seen over and over. People can see something on a billboard., but when they see it on Instagram, they're more likely to make a purchase because it's a trusted platform that they that has built up a lot of credibility within it. And so you want to make sure that you are utilizing, buying and purchasing within Instagram itself because people are impulsive.

Live Streaming I think that the organic reach in posts may go down but the live stream organic reach is going to go up. Instagram is going to want people to do more engaging with the community in real time. I haven't used it much, but I really want to start using it more in the future. I think Instagram is going to really start to make a big push towards live just like Facebook Live. The reach has gone down on Facebook Live, but they still encourage the use of it. But Instagram Live still pops up as at the top and alerts you and they're still at the front of the line for stories. I think in 2019 it's going to get an even bigger upgrade and they're really going to try to push it.

AR Features AR features are going to be out of the roof, especially with the new AR features and capabilities in a lot of these newer phones. I think AR and the stories are going to be a big thing, especially in the DMs. I think AR on posts might be a new thing as well. I think Instagram is going to invest heavily in 2019 because Snapchat is and I think they are trying to do everything they can to eliminate the disrupter that Snapchat is to their audience so that people can stay in Instagram.

Instagram Ads So if you guys can start learning about Instagram ads, I think you guys are going to start making a lot more money. In Instagram, I think your reach is going to go up firstly because you're paying for it. But I think ads are also going to help your organic reach because they will affect the algorithm. As you use the ads they're going to help you to build up your brand awareness and help you build up your clientele. Using things like Facebook Pixels will help tremendously as well. I don't think you should use ads until you've set up a Pixel because, as I've talked about before, landing pages are so, so important, especially when you're running ads. You should not run an ad without a landing page. You could set up a Pixel on your landing page and then in doing so, that's going to help you to retarget those ads from the people that visited your landing page so that you know that they're interested in you and you're not just blindly sending out ads. So there are so many things that Instagram like, it really is a beast that rewards you when you feed it. Like it just it really is like, some of you guys are afraid of ads like Facebook ads, Instagram ads. Don't be because they're super beneficial for you and your business.

Anyways guys, I hope this has been helpful. Like, this is one for me, I think there are these trends in that it's moving towards. And as it moves towards it, I think we all need to be aware of those things so we can begin to utilize them in our business, because that's a big deal.

  • Showit- ANCHORANDVEIL - 10% off the first year
  • Refinery original. - ANCHORANDVEIL at checkout for 10% off sitewide templates

Now, let's talk about the talk!

We recently spoke at the Showit United conferencewhich is absolutely amazing. We LOVE Showit as a platform and the conference they put on is top knotch and worth every penny.

You can break it down into 3 sections

Army of Brides One of the main reasons we want to invest in our brides is because when you can create brand evangelists, they do all of the work for you! It's impossible to grow your business on your own back; you NEED people!

Here are the stats you heard us reference at the beginning of the talk!

One of the main reason this is all possible is because of the exponential growth of investing into two people who will then go out and tell 2-3 people who will then go out and tell 2-3 people each. The tree branches out and reaches way more than we could ever reach on our own!

One of our favorite apps that we LOVe to use is Bonjoro! This app allows us to immediately email our inquiries a very personalized video that is much different than what anyone else is doing. This allows you to add a touch that sets you apart but makes your clients feel valued.

We then follow up with an email from our email template packthat has detailed information on our pricing and options for photographers. We are huge fans of not going back and forth with the pricing because it just drags things on and creates barriers to bookings. The quicker your clients can get to booking, the better!

We then usecalendly to allow them to set a meeting time that coordinates with the schedule we have as well as theirs!

One of the best ways to ensure your pricing pages are seen correctly and look beautiful, make sure you send them PDF's that are either embedded onto your site or check our Showit plus site templatefrom the shop! If you don't have showit, you can check outour gorgeous PDFs as well!

One of the most important things to remember is the follow-up! I can't tell you how many people book us because we follow-up with them. We followed up with text messaging and found out the bride had her email address hacked!

The meeting is so important for building rapport! One of the main things to think about is brining them value and connection in the meeting. If you can help them to connect then you immediately set yourselves apart from the rest!

If you REALLY want to learn more about this, learn from Steve Saporito, that man can teach it and he knows his stuff and he's the guy we learned the most from.

Some of my favorite people to learn in person sales from as well are Phillip and Eileen!

As you meet with them, somekey things we talked about is remembering these things as you meet with them! You don't want to just talk about pricing, you want to create a transformation.

  • Bring them value and connection in the meeting
    • Use their name frequently
    • Our greatest desire is to be valued and known so if you can do that for your clients, you are GOLDEN!
  • Match & Mirror
  • Find areas of Commonality
  • Ask them something meaningful
    • Build awareness in what people see.
    • Creating transformation

We also talked about gifting our clients. We currently use Katelyn James' Wedding Guideas well as Amy & Jordan's engagement session guide. For pre-wedding we use ShopBox Fox. We used to use Melissa Jill's gifting ideas, she is a genius!

Another way we BLOW our clients away and have them singing our praise is by doing a Same day Reception Slideshow, thats a big deal, but if you want to take it to the next level, create an album at the reception! We show you exactly how to do that in our shop, but you can see the slideshow onyoutube.

Now, the best way we have found to get reviews is Photographer's grade! This allows you to streamline your reviews and filter the ones that arent 5-stars. This is AMAZING to be able to do, so we HIGHLY suggest it! Make sure you ue the code ANCHOR!

Army of Vendors The biggest things to remember here is GIVE them the photos, no watermarks, just ask them to post and tag! Also, invest some sweat equity into your business and do the work, it will pay off in the long run!

Army of the Unknown This is HUGE! This is the peopel you don't know about but sing your praise. We see this often in social media becuase of the authentic engagement we create. We have spoken about this A LOT but make sure you check out our instagram course to really start implemeting it, this course has made people thousands!

We love to get emotional with our clients to set us apart. If you can create an emotional connection with your work, you have won the battle, see how we did it in our portfolio video! the song is by our super talented friend Citizen Shade.

Now, to finish it off, its SOOOOO important that you create keyboard shortcuts to authentically engage but steamline it and make it eficient. If you really want to divec into that, I suggest you check out our instagram course, it has a lot more information in there.

We live in a culture that invites engagment, so make sure you take advantage of it, it isnt as awkard or sketchy as you think!

I hope this is helpful, we absolutely LOVE the United conferenceand we always suggest it if you are looking to find an amazing photography community and grow your business!

Natalie Franke is a freaking power house! I loved being able to have her on the podcast and hear about the way she has literally changed a whole industry! If you know anything about her, Natalie started the Rising Tide Societyand now has transitioned to working for Honeybook!

What I love about this episode is that it wasn't the basic, tell me your story, I mean it was that, but this was so much deeper! We talked about the struggles that a lot of us have, who are we, if not a photographer! one of the greatest struggles many of us have when it comes to our job, is that it becomes our identity, it because who people think we are. Well, Natalie stepped out of that role and she talks about how she overcomes those emotions and struggles with her identity.

We talked about limited ourselves as entrepreneurs and how we aren't bound by job titles. One of my favorite topic we tackled was the need for affirmation that plagues our industry. So many people are trying to impress other people without really serving our clients.

We talked about:

Knowing where your true worth and value lies Constructive criticism is crucial in shaping the most important things. When advice or criticism comes from a good place don't ignore it. Time Feedback is critical to business and person development Competition is not inherently a bad thing One way for someone to implement video into their business The important of resilience in an entrepreneur I can go on and on about what we talked about, I just think you should listen to the podcast episode!

Also, one of the most impactful moments of the whole podcast was when Natalie revealed what she learned from being diagnosed with a brain tumor and having to fight through that. This woman is a real inspiration!

This week on the Anchored Podcast we bring you a conversation with Chelsea Moore of Shop Box Fox! This episode focuses on gifting things to your clients. We actually use Chelsea's company for our business, so we can attest to how awesome of an idea and company it is! During our conversation, Chelsea talks how her company has reengineered gift giving and how everything is based around the simple user experience. She tells us about the company's origin and how she and her business partners got it to where it is today.

During the conversation we got on the topic of hiring and while some people live by the rule "hire fast, fire faster", Chelsea explained her hiring philosophy, which is slower and more focused on finding the right person for the job and their company. This was another great episode of the podcast and we hope you enjoy it!

On this week's episode of The Anchored Podcast we have the pleasure of talking to Tonie Christine! The first time we met her we instantly bonded because she is so passionate about things she cares about, as you'll hear in the episode. We talk about everything from her "type of bride" to marketing tips and being a mother.

Tonie's coined phrase is that her bride is "the bride who blazes her own trail" and we have fun diving into the meaning behind that saying. Her ideal bride is someone who is not afraid of logistics and is willing to be daring and spontaneous. She tells the story of how a breakup and a workshop eventually led to her working for herself full-time and how her income doubled in just four months. She explains she is a "Jesus lover" first, a wife second, a mom third and a business woman fourth and how all of these roles play into her business.

One of the things Tonie is extremely passionate about is marketing and that comes through in this conversation. She explains the importance of using different channels of marketing than other people and not putting all of your effort into one platform. She also discusses some of the teaching materials she has available to take your marketing to the next level. All in all this was another fantastic episode of the podcast! Hope you enjoy!

This week on the Anchored Podcast we have the honor of talking to Fer Juaristi! He is a wedding photographer based in Mexico and a very huge inspiration to me (Devin), as you'll hear about in the episode. One thing Fer mentioned was that he likes to go deeper in conversations as opposed to discussing surface level topics, and I think we certainly dived deep into a variety of subjects. We talked about how he seeks to connect with his clients and how it differs from other photographers. He shared how he ensures that he stays original from other photographers and how his creative process works. He also hardly ever uses a second shooter at weddings and he explains both why and how he explains it to his clients.

Fer has an original and unique way of doing things, so it was amazing to view things from his perspective as he explains how you can be just as unique too. One of the most important parts is respecting how you see things and using that to find your own original style. Fer said "Being creative is about creating something that resonates with others" and in this episode, he certainly tells you how to do it. Here's another great episode that we hope you enjoy!

In this week's episode of the Anchored Podcast we get to talk to Makayla Jade! One of Makayla's favorite topics to discuss is print photography, and so we are glad to have a whole conversation with her about it! Some of the biggest things we discussed were how to make your clients value prints, and how the first step is finding value in them yourself. She talks about how she has based her business around print's value and how in doing so she has overcome the hurtle of having to convince clients of it. She explains how she reminds people of the value throughout the entire process and simultaneously creates people that are ready to invest.

One of the most touching moments of this episode is when she tells the story of how prints played a large role in the last days of her grandfathers life. This story was a true testament to how tangible art has the power to bring back memories and emotion like few other things can. It's personal stories like this that help explain the passion she has for prints and it's so great that we got the opportunity to capture some of that passion! Here's another great episode that we hope you enjoy!

In this episode of the Anchored Podcast we get to talk to Jacob Loafman! Jacob has been named one of Rangefinders 30 Rising photographers in the world in 2016 and is extremely creative in his work. In this discussion, we talked about the difference between his personal and client work along with many other topics. We talked about how his personal projects provide him an escape from the real world. His motto when shooting, especially during weddings, is "everywhere is awesome". He is very bold in his work and doesn't bother scouting locations. He loves the challenge of being able to create anywhere and this mindset allows him to experiment and have fun while shooting.

We also talked about asking yourself the importance of photographers knowing why and who they are shooting for. Often times people obsess over impressing other photographers when they should be focusing on their clients. One of the other main topics we focused on was social media and the photography community as a whole. This was an excellent episode and we talked about some very insightful topics. Hope you enjoy this episode!

In this episode of the podcast we talk to Will Purgason of the band Citizen Shade! We unpacked so much in this conversation that it was hard to give this one a title! We talked about how his motivations and mindset about his music have changed over the years and how it has impacted his sound. He shares the answers to questions he often gets such as "Why haven't you been on The Voice" or "What's the meaning behind your band's name". We discuss how isolation and comparison are the two things that kill art and how he remains original despite these things. Will also shares the recovery and therapy that he feels art can bring as well as the personal connection an artist should have to their music.

I've known Will since college, so it was great to pick the brain of someone I've personally seen make a real impact in the music industry. His band Citizen Shade has gained over 11 million views on Youtube from original music, covers and collaborations with other artists. I found it interested that even though he is in music, there were still a lot of correlation between the music industry and entrepreneurs in general, so this episode is for anyone! This is another great episode that I hope you enjoy!

Download this Episode! On this episode of The Anchored Podcast, we are talking about "Do Instagram Pods Work?" With social media ever-changing, there's always talk about beating the algorithms. One way people try and do that is with Instagram pods. First, let's talk about what an instagram pod is!

What Is It? An instagram pod is a group of like minded people coming together to create interaction and engagement on each others posts to try and beat the algorithm.

Does it work? In short, no. The way instagram's algorithm works is it recognizes content that you engage with (by liking / commenting) and puts more of that in your feed. So if you're liking and commenting on other photographers posts, then you're going to see more and more of those posts instead of posts of potential clients. Another reason pods aren't as effective as people think is because it takes up so much time! Pods have rules and if you're in a pod with 15 other brands and you're following each brand and commenting / liking all of their recent content, it takes up time! Most people are in more than one pod, so if you're in 4 pods that around 60 brands you're following and interacting with and then it negatively affects your algorithm with the content you're shown.

How Do you Beat the Algorithm? You don't! Facebook and Instagram are businesses and you can't beat them - you have to play their game. If you play how they want, it will benefit you! Does that mean you have to shell out hundreds of dollars for sponsored posts and ads? No! It just means you have to engage with people the way they want you to.
