Sarah Michelle is the founder of SMNP Reviews, an educational platform that helps students pass nurse practitioner exams. She’s also a public speaker, podcast host, mother, and of course, a former nurse practitioner herself.
I’ve had the honor of helping Sarah with a big keynote presentation over the past few months. When I learned more about her and heard her story, I knew I had to get her on the podcast so she could share it with you all.
In this episode, Sarah and I talk about how she started her business, how mental health is built into its core, collaborating with her students, and more.

There’s this misconception out there that a busy speaker is a successful speaker. You see someone booking all the podcast interviews, getting all the media attention, and speaking at all the events, and you think, “Dang, that speaker’s made it. They know what they’re doing!”
But that’s not always the case. Trust me, I work with some of these speakers. And so many of them come to me in a panic because they dropped tons of money booking these engagements and aren’t seeing results. Or they’re getting attention, but no sales or leads.
That’s what happens when you say yes to speaking opportunities that aren’t right for you. You can accomplish so much more by saying no! Let’s talk about what that means below.

“As a beginner speaker, you have to get on stage. Traditional speaking events are the only way to go.” Have you heard this idea before? Is it something you believed before you started speaking? Well, friends…it’s not true.
Speaking does not always mean you have to get a spot in a conference with thousands of attendees. There are so many unconventional speaking opportunities that are actually better fits for beginner speakers! And one of those opportunities that I always recommend to clients? Podcasting.
Yes, you can start speaking with podcasts, either as a host or a guest. Find out how (and why) below.

What’s the key to making speaking work for your business? Well, not just work. It can help your business grow, help you make an impact on the world, and help you create the life you’ve always wanted.
The key is to figure out the path to successful speaking that’s best for you. If you don’t — and you jump into speaking without understanding your strategy first — speaking can quickly become this extra task on your plate that’s not getting you results.
Luckily, I’ve mapped out the three paths to profitable speaking for you below! Which path will you choose?

As a business owner, it’s easy to get into the habit of putting everything and everyone else first. You keep serving your clients, helping them accomplish their goals, and grow their businesses. What you want, like speaking, gets put on the back burner.
I see this happen all the time with our clients. And I do the exact same thing. I’ve spent so much time helping my clients move forward on their speaking journey (which I love) but I haven’t spent enough time on my own speaking platform!
It’s time we changed that. It’s time to prioritize yourself in 2024.

A friend recently reached out to me and asked if she should pay to speak at a certain event. When I realized I had been invited to speak at that same event the night before — without being required to pay — I found out that paying to speak was now a thing. And I needed to talk about it on the podcast.
This episode is not meant to bash the whole pay to speak method, or make you feel bad if you’ve tried it. I want to bring light to things that are happening in the speaking industry so that you have the information you need to make your own decisions.
With that being said…let’s dive in.

Recently I was thinking of an old business friend for a potential speaking opportunity when I realized something: I hadn’t “seen” them online in a while. Which isn’t uncommon on social media with algorithms that are always changing. But when I looked them up, I found that they were doing something completely different with their business.
This happens more than you think. (Hello, 2020.) If you’re pivoting your business or have shifted it already, you need to make sure your speaking strategy can sustain the change.

The world feels like a heavy place to live in right now. Things feel broken, maybe even irreparable. Whether you’re directly affected by current events, feel anxious about what’s happening in the world, or are going through something personal, it’s understandable if you’re having a hard time serving your people.
How do you stay motivated with speaking when you don’t actually feel motivated? How can you show up on stage to motivate, lead, or inspire others to take action when everything sucks? And what’s the point if it feels like we can’t make a difference?
I’m here to help, my friend. Let’s talk tips on staying motivated and taking care of yourself when it feels like the end of the world.

Browse through the backlog of this podcast with over 200 episodes (!!), and you’ll find a lot of advice on preparing to speak on stage. Advice like overcoming your speaking anxiety, using slides in your presentation, and practicing so that your flow and rhythm are natural. These topics make sense; as a speaker, you want your voice and talk to make a big impact.
But what about how you look while you’re speaking? If you struggle with body image and feeling comfortable in your skin, delivering a killer presentation can seem downright impossible.
Registered Dietician, coach, public speaker, and podcast host Brittany Braswell joined me on The Speak to Scale Podcast to talk about food and body obsession, how it can affect speakers from showing up, and how to feel more confident when speaking on stage

Everyone, please welcome back to the Speak to Scale Podcast…Arel Moodie! Arel joined me on the podcast way back in Episode 59, where we talked about how a mentor can help you become a successful speaker. With Arel as my own mentor, I can attest to that.
He’s built several 7-figure businesses based on speaking and spoken to over 750,000 people all over the world. Arel returned to the podcast today to talk about his newest venture that helps speakers market themselves with data: Talkadot.

There’s a myth out there about what the “natural progression” of getting paid to speak looks like. At first, all you do is take free speaking gigs. You’re putting in your time and paying your dues. No one will want to pay to book you…yet. Until you slowly start replacing unpaid speaking engagements with paid engagements. When that happens, you’ve “made it.”
Like I said, this is a myth! This is usually what speaking looks like for those who want to become professional speakers. It’s not the case for business owners who want to leverage speaking for their business.
The truth is, you can do both — speak for free and get paid to speak — and make it work for your business. Both of them are valuable parts of your speaking strategy. And here’s why…

Recently I got to speak with Racheal Cook of The CEO Collective and Promote Yourself to CEO podcast. She shared so many nuggets of wisdom (including how to find speaking opportunities) that I’m so excited to share with you all.
Racheal serves women entrepreneurs who run service-based businesses who are ready to sustainably scale, without sacrificing life, family, health, or themselves. How did she get into this “life first” mindset and business? By experiencing the harsh “work first” mentality throughout her education and career — and realizing she didn’t want that for her future.
In this episode, Racheal and I talk about where The CEO Collective came from, finding the best speaking opportunities for your biz, the value of niches, and more!

No matter what industry your business serves, you’ll have to weather busy and slow seasons. But does that same principle apply to your speaker journey? Are there times you should be working on speaking for your biz?
The answer? Always.
Whether your calendar is packed with speaking opportunities, you’re focusing on pitching, or you’re connecting with your audience on social media, you have to plan for all the speaking seasons. That’s how you make it a consistent part of your business!

You can write your own talk, or you can have someone else write it for you. (Like me!) But the question is, should you? That depends. In the early years of my business, I was on calls with a bunch of ideal clients to gain information for a program I was developing. After a few calls, I noticed something: almost every single one of my clients had either been a teacher or wanted to be a teacher when they were young. It was fascinating! My people were educators at heart.
It was fascinating but also odd because I, personally, never wanted to be a teacher! And here I am today, 5+ years into homeschooling my two kids. Wild, right?! But now, I love it so much. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
Homeschooling my kids has taught me so much about my kids, myself, the art of teaching, and yes, even speaking.

You know those moments when someone asks you a simple question and it just blows your mind? A question that makes you fully pause and appreciate its greatness? I got one of those questions a few months ago from a client. She asked, “Knowing what you know now…if you had to start from scratch today, what would you do to see success as a speaker, fast?”
I know, right?! This question damn near took my breath away. But the cool thing is, my answer was simple. I’d follow the Speaker Sprint Gameplan.
What is the Speaker Sprint Gameplan? How did it come to be? And how can you use it for your own speaking journey? I got answers to your questions below.

If you have a garden or have thought about starting one, I bet you have a Pinterest-perfect image of what it looks like in your mind. Cedar-raised beds, flowering arches, an ivy-covered picket fence, birds singing…
Unless you have an unlimited amount of time, money, and land, that’s not what your garden will look like right out of the gate…and the same goes for speaking.
Why do I compare the two? Because starting a garden is a lot like speaking, actually. You won’t be a perfect, successful speaker from the moment you step on a stage for the first time. You need to start small, be patient, and learn from your experiences.
Let’s take a closer look at why gardening is a lot like starting your speaking journey.

In the previous episode, I talked about showcasing yourself as a speaker on your website. If you haven’t listened to it yet, here’s a spoiler alert: I told y’all to start with the marketing assets you have and upgrade or add more as you continue speaking.
Having a speaker website is definitely important. But how do you get people to find that website? That’s where social media comes in. Showcasing yourself as a speaker through social media content is just as important, if not more important, than having a great speaker page.

I got a great question from someone in my workshop recently: “I’ve spoken at three virtual events. What’s the best way to showcase them?” While we’d all love a perfectly produced, Insta-worthy speaker Reel to show off our skills, the reality is, most of us aren’t there yet.
When it comes to marketing yourself as a speaker, I want you to market what you have. And a handy tool for doing this is to create a speaker website.

You know that speaking is an excellent way to grow your business. You’ve even begun taking steps to do that, like searching for speaker events near you or listening to podcast episodes on how to start speaking (wink, wink). But so far, speaking isn’t working for you.
If you’ve started thinking that you don’t have what it takes to be a speaker or aren’t good enough at speaking, I want you to stop right there. I say this with all the kindness and love I have: you’re wrong, friend. You can become an amazing speaker.

So. You wanna get paid to speak. We all do! But, um…where are those paid speaking engagements? Do you find them, or do they find you?
I’ve gotten these questions a few times from audience members, clients, and social media followers. Getting paid to speak isn’t talked about very much, so it all feels very secretive and mysterious. But there isn’t a magical list of events and organizers that are looking for paid speakers.
It really comes down to two things: targeting the right events for you, and requiring a speaker fee. Let’s talk about it.

When it comes to writing your talks, how do you feel? Maybe you love delivering your speeches onstage, but writing them down beforehand feels like torture. Or, maybe you love creative writing, but channeling your creativity into a structured, strategic presentation feels impossible.

Why do some speakers stand out over others? Why are some memorable and some…not so much? Why do some speakers look so effortless and personable when they’re on stage?
In short, what ACTUALLY makes a great speaker?
I bet you wouldn’t believe me if I said personality has nothing to do with it. If you’re extroverted, shy, loud, awkward — it doesn’t matter. What makes a great speaker is perspective…and your ability to see the world through the eyes of other people.

What makes an in-demand speaker so popular? Why do event organizers and planners flock to certain speakers instead of others? What are they doing right that you can learn from and apply to your own speaking journey?
I can’t say for sure since everyone is unique…but I have a pretty good idea. And you know what? Becoming one of those most-booked speakers involves more than sending a gazillion pitches. It’s about who you are off of the stage.

You’ve booked an incredible speaking opportunity. You’re ready to get onstage in front of your dream clients or customers. You want to prime your audience to buy your offer, but you’re not exactly sure how to do that.
Is it too salesy to introduce your do-it-yourself services from the very beginning of your talk? How do you talk about done-for-you offers without sounding pushy or arrogant? And what’s the difference between DFY and DIY anyhow?
In this episode, I share answers to your burning questions and break it all down for you, so don’t worry. Let’s dig in.

I’ve talked about whether you should always get paid for speaking opportunities before; long story short, it depends on the event itself. Speaking opportunities come in all shapes and sizes. Getting booked doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be onstage at a conference. And that’s great news for us speakers, because it means that we can show up for our people in so many ways.
But when you are getting paid, I want you to charge what you’re worth.
In this episode, I talk about what’s actually included in your speaker fee. What are organizers or hosts “buying” when they book you? Hint: It’s not the number of minutes you spend onstage.

On this podcast, we’ve talked a lot about pitching yourself. Promoting your business and speaking journey. Connecting with the right people or getting on the right stages at the right time.
It’s a lot to take in! Which is why I wanted to get back to the basics for a bit and discuss what to say when promoting your talk. There are three major details you want to focus on: your title, talk, and takeaway.
This exercise will help you prepare to promote your talk, no matter what opportunity it’s for. Big or little, paid or unpaid, virtual or in-person — you should always be ready to market yourself and your talk.

You’re talking to event organizers and planners about speaking opportunities later this year. But…everyone seems to be asking you for slightly different things. One planner wants to hire you for a keynote, while another asks if you can host a workshop for their seminar.
Is there a difference? Does it matter?
Yes, and yes. You may call your content “presentations,” but depending on who you ask, someone else may call it a keynote speech, a breakout session, a program, a seminar, a workshop…the list goes on.
To ensure that you’re delivering a talk that’s right for the audience and event, you have to know the differences between a keynote and a workshop. Let’s talk about it.

Podcasts are one of the most fun places to flex your speaking skills. And I’m not just saying that as a podcaster!
While there’s no experience quite like speaking in front of a live audience, podcasts are exciting in a different way. There’s something really cool about sharing your message with your audience in a quiet, intimate setting.
But first, you have to get booked by a podcast host. And before that, your pitch has to actually get read. So how do you become one of those in-demand podcast guests that hosts always want to say yes to?

Calling all coaches! Are you looking for that perfect coaching client?
You know who I’m talking about. Someone who’s in line with your values, and the vision for your business. Someone whose personality vibes with yours. Someone who you know would be a dream to coach.

Well, my friend, speaking can help you find those perfect clients.
If you’re working on your speaking craft, one of the most helpful things to remember is that you will make mistakes when speaking. You’ll fumble a word. Forget what to say next. Totally freeze up for a second. These things will happen, and usually, they won’t be noticed by anyone other than you.
However, there are some mistakes that can and should be avoided early on in your speaking journey. Let’s talk about what those first-time speaking mistakes are and why you should try your best to avoid them.

“I’m too shy to speak!” If I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard this when chatting with people about speaking…
Here’s the truth. Some of the most impactful speeches have come from people who consider themselves shy or introverted. You don’t need to be an extrovert who loves public speaking to thrive on stage.
You just have to learn a few tricks that will help you calm your nerves and make speaking feel more natural for you. That’s what we’ll get into in this episode.

On today's episode, I have brought in a very special guest to pull back the curtain and show us exactly what it's like to speak at or host a hybrid event, and why you shouldn't be intimidated by them. So many people say, "I do better with informal, casual, off-the-cuff style speaking."
This kind of speaking can feel better for many of us because off-the-cuff speaking removes the pressure for us to be perfectly polished.
However, this approach can also give us a false sense of security, making us think that we actually work better this way. Plus, let's be honest: It can also make us feel safer when we step on stage. If we don't put a lot of time into preparing, it doesn't feel like a 'loss' if it doesn't go well. If we DO put in the time to prep and our talk doesn't turn out great, we feel like WE are not good enough.
In this episode, let's dig into prepped vs. off-the-cuff speaking styles, and why a little preparation might just change the game.

Getting started as a speaker can be intimidating. We get in our own way and overthink what we should say in a pitch, how we can reach out to an organizer, or wonder if anybody actually wants us on the stage. One way to get started speaking is to host your own event, like Taryn did.
Taryn Jerez, owner of One Crafty Miss, really wanted to start speaking and she wasn't going to wait around for somebody to hand her a microphone. She saw a need in her creative industry and started hosting an event where she could highlight other women and other business owners and bring people together to grow their own businesses and create community. She started gaining traction in her own business as a speaker...and that’s just the beginning….
So if you've thought about hosting an event, or you love curating communities online, this episode is for you. Today, we are going to show you how being that incredible networker can help you fast track your speaking success. My challenge to you today as you listen to this podcast is to ask yourself “how can I show up as a host, a connector or a curator to bring people together and create an experience that's going to leave them wanting more?”

When a new speaking opportunity comes across your desk (whether an in-person or virtual event), how are you determining if this is something that you should say “yes” or “no” to? This might sound a little crazy coming from me, considering this is The Speak to Scale Podcast, and that my job is to help you scale your business with speaking!
In today’s episode of The Speak to Scale Podcast I walk you through some of the things to consider when you are presented with a speaking opportunity. From what questions you should be asking, to considering when conversions matter and when they don't, and how to create a balance between opportunities that are conversion-focused and those that are not. So grab a pen, and let's dive in.

Wouldn't it be amazing if you could grab a microphone (whether that's virtually or in-person) and share a message that delivered value for your audience and brought in new clients? Selling from the stage growing your business with speaking is hands down my favorite way to grow and scale my business. And it's not my favorite because it's a sleazy get rich quick scheme. It is my favorite sales strategy because we get the privilege of educating our audience, serving from the stage, and delivering a transformation that can change our audience’s lives… all while growing our business at the same time. What more can we possibly ask for in a sales mechanism?
But with so many changes happening to the way that we speak and speaking looks a little bit different these days, you might be wondering if you can still leverage speaking to increase your sales. In today’s episode of The Speak to Scale Podcast I’m going to show you exactly what you need to include in your presentation to increase your conversion from the stage.

Does the promise of passive income feel just too good to be true? Perhaps, you've scrolled past one too many Instagram posts of somebody living it up on the beach, telling you how they made X amount of dollars in their sleep all they were sipping mai tai's. I get it. A lot of the messaging out there makes it feel like it's too good to be true, but what if it wasn't?
In this episode, we go behind the scenes with my friend and amazing client Paige Brunton who built a HUGE entirely passive income business (from a $50,000 a year business to a $500,000 a year business) in a very short amount of time. She walks us through the entire process step by step… Starting with her journey from blogging, consulting, and “done for you projects” to her new cycle where everything is running on autopilot. She spends more time away from her computer than she spends at it and she's really living her best life. If passive income is something that has been on your vision board, but you don't know how to make that leap from “done for you” to DIY, today's episode is going to give you a step by step plan of attack to get it done and a whole lot of inspiration to see that it's actually possible.

If you’ve transitioned into a role where you’re helping others achieve a desired result, you may be unsure what to call yourself. You are not alone! You may have heard the words “coach” and “consultant” used interchangeably and you’re not sure what the difference really is. Maybe you’ve shifted away from being a service provider and started sharing your expertise with others. We see this quite often when our students and speakers are growing as educators.
Although this may sound like a business issue, it also impacts your speaking strategy. On this episode of The Speak to Scale Podcast we’re breaking down the difference between coaching and consulting to help you figure out which type of speaker you are so that you can start scaling your business from the stage.

When you think about speaking: grabbing that microphone, stepping onto the stage and pouring into your people, how do you envision yourself? Can you feel those beads of sweat starting to appear as your heart beats like a drum? Maybe you're excited and you know exactly what you're going to say, and you're ready to jump on the stage. No matter where you fall on this scale, I'm willing to bet there's been a moment or two in your life or in your business when there was an opportunity for you to step up to the plate and own your greatness and you second-guessed yourself. If you're listening to this podcast, chances are you listen to other podcasts and have possibly even considered hosting your own podcast. You’ve probably wondered how to go about not sounding like everybody else. You don't want to add to the noise in your industry; you want to craft a message that stands out and connects with your ideal clients.
In this episode, I've brought in my dear friend Megan Maydel to help us understand what we can do right now in the thick of a pandemic to scale and market our business without having to spend a ton of money because I know we're all a little bit concerned about cash. Megan is the CEO and owner of the digital advertising agency, Disruptr Creative, and has worked with brands like Volvo, Trident, and Converse. She specifically helps mid-six-figure brands and businesses break through the white noise and stand out with their message. She is a genius when it comes to positioning and messaging and in today's episode, she's going to give us some practical strategies about how we can use that method to get our message out on podcasts and audio platforms without sounding like everybody else.

Many businesses operate under the impression that bigger is better with the thought that the larger you get, the more likely you are to be a subject matter expert in your industry. I’m here to tell you that this logic doesn’t always hold true. I’m recording this episode in the middle of a pandemic - a lot of small businesses have been hit really hard. Many of us are evaluating what’s working, what isn’t, and considering changes and shifts in their businesses. The words growing and scaling are likely flying around your zoom calls or slack channels with no discernment between the two. During this tough time where the majority of us are pinching pennies and focusing on efficiency, we’re going to have an honest and uncomfortable conversation about the difference between growing and scaling your business with public speaking and how this impacts your overall strategy.

I am so excited that you're here because today we're talking all about protecting your public speaking content. If you joined us last week, we mapped out our signature frameworks and identified the repeatable process you can take your audience through, whether that's in a coaching program, an online course, or from the stage to deliver a transformation. Your signature framework is something you worked hard on and is extremely valuable and proprietary. Today we're talking about how to protect your content so you can share it confidently without holding back from your audience. To do this I've brought in my dear friend, my mastermind buddy and my trademark attorney Joey Vitale to help us understand what it means to protect our speaking content and how we can leverage that protection to book more speaking engagements.

In this episode of the Speak to Scale Podcast we're covering your “signature framework”, which is the unique approach I take when it comes to helping you craft your talk. If the words “signature framework” seem a little foreign to you, don't worry. You've probably heard of this before, but it may have been referred to differently. I truly believe that once you nail down this part of public speaking, everything else with speaking becomes easier. In an age when anyone can stand up a website and call themselves an expert, this framework will ensure you stand out from your competition by positioning yourself as a thought leader in an authentic way that is proprietary to you. A signature framework also allows you to have this rinse and repeat process that you can use with your programs, in your courses, and from the stage. It's a process that allows you to deliver consistent results! Make sure you tune in where I dive deeper into how to start putting your signature framework together!

We are in a strange time right now and with so many businesses being forced to move online, a lot of our speaking presentations are getting moved online too. I'm sure you've noticed a big uptick in virtual summits and Facebook lives. People are presenting their content in a way they didn't before and that's great because it means more people than ever are getting to digest your content and receive your message. This shift is going to allow you to create a bigger ripple effect than you did before. This is a great opportunity for you to transform even more lives and continue making an impact in the world around you. You don't have to stop speaking just because things are changing, but your format and delivery is going to have to change a bit. In this episode I'm going to walk through the big differences between an in-person presentation and a virtual presentation so you can ensure that your talk is still hitting the Mark no matter where you're delivering your presentation from.

Stages have always been the fastest way to increase your credibility and convert in-person. Whether you're speaking at conferences, retreats, workshops, network events, or you're taking the virtual route with webinars, live streams, summits, or podcasts... there is no shortage of places for you to share your message. What do we do when those opportunities are impacted beyond our control? What do we do when an unexpected crisis strikes and we're left to navigate cancelations and postponed events?
After spending the last 14 years traveling the country sharing my story, I've had a few unexpected curveballs and learned plenty of lessons along the way. Today, I’m helping you navigate the more difficult parts of public speaking so that you can continue to scale your business from the stage and serve your audience from the front.

As somebody who has hosted a few events focused on public speaking for business, I can tell you that it is equally terrifying and exciting. In this world of social media, we only get a tiny snippet of an entrepreneur’s voyage from their infancy to the strategic pivot point of hosting events. We don’t get to see all of the behind the scenes trials, tribulations and hard work it takes to arrive at a place in your business where you’re ready to host an event. In this episode, we’re having a conversation about public speaking for business at virtual summits and protecting the integrity of your email list. I know as a business owner we truly want to serve people well. We want speaking opportunities we can show up to and pour into our audience, but sometimes we don't know how to identify if a virtual summit is going to be a good fit for us, especially when we're asked to share all of the summit information with our email list (that we are really trying to serve and protect). To unpack this subject I brought in my dear friend Ashlyn Carter to have an honest conversation about what email list ethics really need to look like and how we can approach virtual summits with a fresh perspective.

You want to make sure you're speaking to the right people, giving them what they need and not overloading your plate with unnecessary tasks. This has been a highly requested topic, so I have brought in my friend and expert on the subject Abby Herman to talk to us all about how to create a content strategy for public speaking.

Welcome back! A lot of us are terrified to look wrong or less than perfect. We waste precious time and miss out on great speaking opportunities because we’re being overly perfectionist about selecting the right speaking topic. What if I told you that it's NOT your speaking topic that converts. It doesn't matter how good your talk is... it will only convert if it's being delivered in front of the right audience. Instead of spinning your wheels about a specific topic, focus on your people. Zero in on the audience you are meant to serve and love speaking to. Your topic will come to you a lot easier when you focus on their needs and goals. If you've been dragging your feet or making excuses about selecting the right speaking topic before you'll take action and your pitch yourself, tune in so we can break down those barriers.

It is no secret that video plays a huge role in how we connect with our audience. It allows us to make fast connections, answer burning questions, and gives our audience a taste of what it's like to work with us. As speakers, it certainly makes sense that we tap into this valuable resource to make deep connections with our audience as well as decision makers who could book us to speak. I have brought in a friend and one of our Speaker Circle members Marvin Flavien to share exactly how you can leverage video to market your business. Tune in as I hand the mic over to Marvin so that we can reframe the value of video as a speaker.

Hey friends! Welcome back to another episode of the speak to scale podcast. In this episode we're talking all about how to outsource your pitching for getting featured on podcasts. As business owners, it’s always preached to us that we need to outsource things in our business to free up time to and stay in our zone of genius. I completely agree with this theory, but when it comes to pitching podcasts we've been sold a lie. We've been told that we should hire some agency or assistant to get our message in front of as many podcasts as possible. What we don't see when employing this method of efficiency is what it actually looks like on the receiving end. In this episode we're going to take you behind the scenes and share with you exactly what it's like for us as podcast hosts to get those types of pitches in our inbox. We want to share what it feels like to receive “spray and pray” pitches and share some best practices on how you can improve your pitches and get featured on more podcasts so I brought on our podcast manager, the one and only “Rad Dad Chad” to give us some insight on the matter. Enjoy!

Happy new year! This is our first episode of 2020 and I could not be more excited to ring in the new year and help you get set up for success to leverage speaking to scale your business. Today I want to answer a question that I actually get quite often, which is “should I pay to speak?”. Have you ever been put in a position where you were told about an incredible speaking opportunity and then you found out that in order to speak at the event you were going to have to make an investment? It might seem a little backwards that you are going to show up and do an incredible job developing a presentation and pouring into the audience all while having to come out of pocket to do so. It sounds crazy, but there are times when it's a smart move! Tune as I walk you through when this is/isn’t a good idea.

Welcome back! Today I’m really excited to announce we’re making the transition from the “Creative Speaker Podcast” to the “Speak to Scale Podcast”! In our debut episode, we’re going to cover how to approach using speaking to scale your business. In today’s constantly evolving business environment, social media and search engine results are becoming less organic. Having success on social media is becoming more dependant on running ads. Popular search engines are no longer giving you the most relevant search results; rather they’re giving you the results they are being rewarded the most for you to see. This is the reason why scaling your business with speaking is such a valuable and powerful tactic. Stages have been around forever and they are consistently the fastest way to increase your credibility and conversions. There are right and wrong ways to go about scaling your business with speaking. I’ve removed a lot of the strategy guess-work in this episode. I look forward to seeing you there!

Have you ever seen someone explode onto the scene and wonder, “how did this person catapult into instant recognition and industry-related stardom? I see them everywhere!” Don’t let this discourage you or make you think that your work and the value you deliver is less significant than theirs. I can promise you the momentum and success they have achieved was not instant! In the vast majority of cases, they’ve been at it a LONG time. It's likely this is the 3rd or 4th time they’ve attempted a business. The reality is, they have been behind the scenes doing the work without recognition and now that they’ve hit their stride, they’ve gone all-in on visibility. In this episode, I’m going to share when it's time to go all-in on one of these speaker sprints and the steps it takes to get there.

In this episode, we talk about the uncomfortable thing that nobody wants to discuss and that’s speaker agreements. We've had a past episode about this, but I want to address this from a different angle because the reality is you're probably a business owner who's already using contracts or agreements with your current clients. You may not be new to using contracts within your business. However, that contract you're using probably doesn't translate correctly for a speaking engagement. So today I brought in a friend of mine Paige Griffith with The Legal Paige. She's a student of ours who’s in the Speaker Circle. She’s also an amazing attorney. She’s going to give a different perspective on our existing contracts and explain what clauses we need to have within our speaker contracts.

We need to have a little heart to heart! I want to correct your perspective on many of the service-based business owners you see speaking. When seeing them on the stage at industry events, it's easy to get caught up in the glamor and instantly start to assume that this is something that is working so well for them. They're getting tons of exposure and they certainly must be getting a lot of clients from it, right? Speaking must be this awesome thing that has them rolling in the money! The reality is most business owners who are high dollar service providers seldom effectively turn a profit from these speaking engagements.
If you've been around here for a while, I'm sure you've heard me talk a lot about using speaking to grow your online programs, courses and digital products, but what if you don't have any of that setup yet? Should you wait to start speaking or is now the right time to dive in? This episode is about making the most of monetizing these events.

When you hear the word “leader”, do you get excited and empowered to make a difference or is that a word that makes you question your value or feel inferior? When we look at speaking and leading from the stage, the term leader is not about authority, seniority or recognition. Leading from the stage is all about service! It's the act of guiding your audience on a clear journey to help them achieve a result. Today I want to have an honest chat about what leadership really means within your business, particularly when it comes to speaking.

Showing up online to stay at the forefront of our potential client's minds is really important. It's especially important If we want to be booked as a public speaker. Conference organizers won't know what we're doing and the incredible value we bring to the table if we're not front and center by going live, posting on social media, creating videos, etc. However, it can be hard to stay motivated to consistently show up when it involves staying in the spotlight. However, your ultimate goal should be to eventually get paid for your endeavors. Today I’m going to cover 3 things you should be doing at every event to ensure you get paid the next time.

In order in order to effectively do that, we need to really understand our client’s journey (what is going on with our buyers before, during, and after that sale). I am not an expert on that topic, but I have brought in my friend Meghan Maydell, who currently spends her time helping brands leverage psychological triggers within their content marketing and sales efforts so they can focus on quality over quantity. She's all about the science and strategy behind your marketing. On today's episode, we're breaking down how to understand your buyer's journey so that you can get those conversions from the stage.

Welcome back! In prior episodes, we have explored how to determine whether or not a speaking engagement is worth saying “yes” to. Agreeing to a speaking engagement is so much more than the idea of how much fun or a good opportunity it might be. A key piece of this decision-making criteria should be what the Return On Investment (ROI) looks like. Before we agree to any speaking opportunity, we really need to do our due diligence and run some numbers to make sure that this speaking engagement is going to be a good fit for us financially. Today’s episode is all about factors to consider to effectively calculate your ROI for a speaking engagement.

If you listen to my podcast, a goal of yours is probably delivering your message in front of the people you've been called to serve. In order to be able to step away from your business to do this, you need a business growth strategy that works without you being glued to your desk. Ideally, you need a method to extend your reach and bring in new clients/students for your business that operates on autopilot. To help you do that, I've brought in my friend Vanessa to walk through all the things you need to know about how to leverage Pinterest for your business in order to be a better business owner and create hot leads.

Have you purchased online courses, but still aren’t where you'd like to be in your business? Maybe you've blamed the teacher, the program and even yourself. Are you eager to learn and grow, but when you calculate the amount of money you've invested into courses over the years, it kind of makes you sick to your stomach? What if the reason you're not seeing the results you want isn't the fault of the teacher or the program or even yourself? What if it's just that this season of life, your unique business and the leap that you're trying to take require a different approach? In-person speaker coaching is one of the most powerful things you can do for your business! It wasn’t until I hosted The Speaker Circle Group Program in January as well as the in-person retreat in March that I had some time to reflect and see the fruits of my labor and come to this realization. Today we’re going to cover some of the incredible breakthroughs that were had and why this could be one of the single most important investments you make in your business.

By hand-curating the event and keeping the group purposefully small, I was still able to get to know each client’s business on an intimate enough level to properly reverse engineer their message in a way that created a deep personal connection with their potential customers and converted!
Taking a leap in your business and doing something new is terrifying and we can often be consumed with the thoughts of, what if I fail? Who am I to do this? But when you link arms with others who are going through that exact same process for their own business and their own subject matter (who are not in direct competition with each other), magic happens!

If you’re an entrepreneur in the public speaking world, you know how stressful it can be to manage your inbox in general, especially while you’re out of pocket at an industry conference or summit. So many of us are slaves to the inbox and it can quickly feel overwhelming knowing that while you’re fully immersed at an event or even with your family/friends, that hot leads could be falling through the cracks and valued clients could be feeling neglected. The feeling that you’re going to have to spend the next couple days after an event trying to catch up with emails can also lead to lost sleep. On today's episode, my friend Abby Springmann is going to walk us through getting a better understanding of that black hole that is the inbox so that we can take back our lives, add to our bottom line and can get out there and serve from the stage.

The fear of public speaking is one of the most common phobias in the world, but the notion that this phenomenon is more pronounced in introverts is a huge misconception. Today my special guest Cinnamon Wolfe and I have a deep dive discussion about what it's like to be a speaker/educator and attend these live events as an introvert. Join us as we take some time to learn a little bit more about what being an "introvert" really means so we can lean into our strengths and serve people in a way that we may not have been able to before.

An interesting topic about content creation recently came up in my small group program, The Speaker’s Circle. The question was whether you should publish content containing information you might cover in your talk or if you should keep that information private and only deliver it to those who come to see you speak. Today I’m going to discuss why you SHOULD share some of the details and maybe even a few golden nuggets around your speaking topic.

A hot topic in today’s creative industry is the lack of diversity on a lot of the speaker lineups. Our role here at the Creative Speaker Podcast is to elevate education in our industry to make this a more collaborative experience between speakers, organizers, and attendees. Today I've brought in my friend Josefina Sanders who is a fellow Tampa native. I love her! I brought her in to pull back the curtain and have this difficult and honest talk about what it feels like to see that speaker lineup announced and not feel like you're represented. I also brought her in for those of us who have never felt that way, who look like most of the speakers on the lineup and don't know what we can do to change this wave in our industry. Together we’re going to discuss why we’re better together!

While there are seasons where we can say yes to everything, there are also seasons where we have to say no. And those seasons are just as valuable! Sometimes saying no is a much better option than saying yes, even when it feels really hard to make the decision.
Allie Casazza is married to her junior high algebra partner and is a mom to their four young kids. She is the founder and host of The Purpose Show podcast and creator of Your Uncluttered Home - an online decluttering course that has earned her national attention for her philosophy of simple motherhood and simple living. She is all about helping you live a more purposeful and intentional life rather than trying to have more, do more, and be more. She has learned how to navigate speaking engagements through seasons. Right now she is in a season where she is being really selective of what she says yes to and I love that! Through our conversation, she pulls back the curtain and shows us why she says no, but more so she walks us through how important her time is when she is looking at the season to come.

Managing expectations can be quite daunting, especially in the world of speaking! Whether you are a conference host, a speaker, or a conference attendee, how well you understand what is to come and what is expected of you will determine the experience you have. When it comes to expectations, I've learned that some of the biggest struggles stem back to lack of communication. My friend, Tara Melvin is the queen of cultivating communication and managing expectations. She is a speaker, event planner, and conference host. And through all of those facets one thing that I have seen her do so well is really set that open communication and clear expectations from the start. She has so much to share in this episode. I know you will enjoy it!

Have you ever caught yourself saying, “I'm too young, too old, too new, or too whatever to do the thing you want to do? Because if you have (like most of us have), then you're going to love this episode! I am excited to introduce you to my friend, Hope Taylor because she started her business when she was 16 years old. So, let’s just say that she has faced adversity, criticism, and those voices in her head telling her she’s too young, too new, too whatever. But she is pulling back the curtain, sharing it all with us and sharing with us the journey of building a successful business! She is a photographer and educator in the creative industry, she speaks at events and major conferences, but more importantly, she hosts her own workshops as a big part of her business. She has a lot to share with us about how to actually add education to our business in a way that is seamless, that doesn't confuse our audience, that really just helps build up our credibility, and makes us known as that “go to person” in our industry. So if you're looking to start taking those leaps as an educator or you're wanting to host your own events and add this new area to your business, grab a pen because this episode is for you.

Have you considered hosting your own event this year or next? Maybe you want to cultivate an incredible conference, intimate retreat, a one day workshop, or even an online summit. Regardless of the format, you are probably so excited about all the bells, whistles, and pretty touches you've been dreaming up. But then comes the hardest part … landing the best-fit speakers for your event. Often we get caught up in this Instagram perfect industry and forget what really matters; serving from the stage, adding value to the attendees and making the event an experience the attendees want to come back to time and time again. So if you are looking to host your own event or online summit, I want to give you three things to consider before you select speakers. Because the speakers you have will make a strong impact on the whole event!

Are you someone who is really itching to step into your role as a leader or educator in the industry? Or are you someone who is wanting to start speaking or hosting events? What fears are holding you back? Most people are afraid because in their minds, they are thinking this is a big leap from A to Z. But I am here to shatter that thought and get you thinking from step A to B or maybe A to C. I've invited my dear friend Lindsey Lucas to join us for this episode she is an incredibly successful business owner who is terrified of speaking and we've been working together. She has her first big speaking engagement this year, but she has been doing so much work behind the scenes to start taking those steps to punch those speaking fears in the face. She has learned how to take baby steps instead of big leaps in her speaking journey and I am excited for her to share some practical advice with you as you overcome those same fears!

You’ve taken the time to craft your perfect presentation and now you’re not sure how to feel confident presenting it. Should you memorize it? Use flash cards? Wing it? What’s the best way to practice and prep your talk? There’s no one “right” answer to that. We all absorb and retain information in our own way. In this episode, I want to share what has worked best for myself and my clients to practice and prepare before it’s time to deliver their presentation so that you can form your own version of preparation and presentation!

The world of Instagram is always changing and evolving. But it is in the favor of Creative Speakers! We just need to know how to use it to build our business, audience reach, and speaker credibility in the best way, which is why I have brought my friend, Tyler McCall on for this episode. Tyler is passionate about helping entrepreneurs use Instagram in a more intentional and genuine way so they can serve more people, make more money, and work less. He is a genius when it comes to Instagram social media marketing! He knows firsthand how his work behind the scenes and behind the screen of Instagram has really prepared him to be a better speaker. And I'm so excited for him to share all the things that we can be doing right now from our home, not on the stage, to really help us grow our speaking platform.

So if you haven't noticed, there is a massive trend in our industry to become an educator. And while I am a big believer in this trend, I also believe in making sure that as creatives, we do it in the right way. I want to help you add education without it confusing your audience or being a big distraction from the incredible work that you already do! The last thing we should be doing is adding something extra to our plate that overwhelms us or just makes things messy. So, we are going to walk through step by step exactly how we should be approaching education and how we can add it to our brand in a way that is cohesive and really just helps us serve in a bigger way.
My good friend, Alicia Bauer, has A TON of experience with this topic and in this episode she is going to share her wealth of wisdom with us. She helps creatives figure out how to add their real selves to everything they build into their brand, including educational elements. And she is REALLY good at it!

One of the questions I get asked a lot is how I pick out what I wear for speaking engagements. Admittedly, I feel like I have zero fashion sense. I am home all day in sweatpants a t-shirt so I don’t know who I am to be giving you some fashion advice! But I have been speaking for a long time and can help guide you in what outfit choices have worked best for me and the things I have learned along the way, both through success and some serious wardrobe malfunctions. You're probably going to have a good giggle with this episode and hopefully I can help you avoid some of the wardrobe issues I have had while speaking!

I have a love-hate relationship with video if I am being honest. It isn’t my personal strength, but I truly do believe that using video as a Creative Speaker makes us better speakers. And since film and video aren’t my forte, I brought in an amazing powerhouse duo to share their wisdom! Tyler and Ashley Herrinton are storytellers at their core and they love telling a story through video. From filming weddings to promotional videos to filming conferences, they do it all. They are here to help us really understand how we, as Creative Speakers and business owners, can best leverage video, elevate education through video, and give us a great tech breakdown when it comes to filming.

I believe all of us have the same opportunities to reach our audience from the stage. However, not all of us know how to bundle up our business into a cohesive speaking platform. I’m tired of watching incredible business owners halting their own speaking success because they feel trapped in the cycle of “I need experience in order to be selected to speak. But in order to gain experience, I need to be selected to speak” This week, we’re going to stop that cycle in its tracks! Building credibility as a speaker isn’t about waiting around for someone to tell you “You’re an expert- come speak!” It’s about taking action and building that credibility for yourself. It’s not complicated, but it IS going to take some work on your part… are you in?

As speakers we are storytellers. And we have the ability to communicate our story however we want it to be perceived. People will judge our story whether we share it or not. That is out of out control! But if our focus is in the right place and our heart is supported with the right intentions, then we can share our story confidently and bravely. You can choose to be either a celebrity or a leader with your story. Leaders create other leaders, celebrities create followers. Leaders empower people to be their best, celebrities create content to draw people, to watch them, to admire them.
My dear friend, Natalie Franke Hayes, is joining us to discuss how to share our stories, when to share them, and how much of them to share. She has a personal journey around this topic and I know you will truly enjoy learning from her in this episode!

There will always be criticism. Always. No matter what you do. You can’t and won’t please everyone. You’re not supposed to. There are specific people that you have been called to serve and it’s your job to show up and serve them, not try to figure out how to tailor your message to appease others. As a speaker, you will face criticism for many things; your style of speaking, your presentation materials, your story, and more. When the criticism comes (and remember, it will!) it is up to you to decide what you do with it. There are times when criticism is valuable and there are times it needs to be disregarded. I am excited to talk through the differences with you in this episode!

Today's episode is a little more meaty than usual! We're getting down to some technical, nitty-gritty details to help you make the most out of your speaker agreement. Maybe you're a speaker who's starting to get on the stage and you're worried about what to include in your speaker contract. Do you even need one? What's the point? Or maybe you're a host who's bringing speakers into serve at your event and your not sure what needs to be included in that paperwork. How do you protect yourself? So you’re a great writer who has no fear putting your words on paper, but are terrified to take those words to a stage. And no matter how good you are at your craft, there can be something really intimidating about stepping into that educator role, jumping onto a stage and teaching others how to do what you do. In this episode, we are really getting into how to go from writing to speaking. Ashlyn and I also have an honest conversation about knowing when speaking opportunities are and are not a good fit for you. There is a lot to unpack in this episode, but I promise you - it’s full of GOOD stuff!
Ashlyn Carter is an incredibly talented calligrapher, amazing copywriter + the founder of Ashlyn Writes. From writing wedding invitations for brides to helping creative entrepreneurs sell with their words, she loves to help people tell their stories.

When somebody asks us to be a part of something, we are so honored and excited and cannot believe they chose us! Then in that moment, the only answer that wants to come out of our mouth is "yes". However, we need to slow down, ask some questions, do a little math, and make a wise decision before we hit that email with capital letters, YES, and a million exclamation points. Making decisions based on emotion is not going to help us move our needle forward. It's not helping us to best serve our audience and to really improve our speaking strategy. So let’s dive into the things you should consider when you are asked to speak!

Sales. That word will either bring you excitement or make you really uncomfortable. When it comes to speaking, you will have to sell yourself. But it doesn’t have to be uncomfortable, it can be something incredibly empowering! Whether you are selling your presentation to an organizer to get a spot on that lineup or you are selling your products and services to an audience to help move them into your business, today's conversation is going to help you really look at that sales process from a new perspective. It is all about finding your sweet spot! My dear friend, Lacey Sites, is going to help us navigate finding how we find our sweet spot. Because we don't always have to do the cookie-cutter formula and sometimes just figuring out what our sweet spot will lead us to make the biggest impact.
Lacey Sites is a business mentor and success coach for high performing female entrepreneurs. At the start, her business grew to a multiple six-figure mark in less than 16 months. After achieving that, she made it her mission to help other women build and grow their own service-based business. Have you ever had one of those gut-wrenching moments in your life, in your business or on the stage where it felt like everything failed? And all you could do was ask yourself, “What on earth do I do next and how do I pick up the pieces?” In today’s episode, I am chatting with my dear friend, Mary Marantz about that exact moment in her life and how she moved forward! This grand speaking platform wasn’t handed to Mary. She had to work hard for it to happen and be successful! And through that she has learned the value of servant leadership in the world of speaking.
Mary Marantz works alongside her husband, Justin, as international wedding photographers. They travel the globe to photograph weddings, as well as teach and inspire small business owners to really just bring their best selves to the table. Mary has not only spoken at several conferences, but has hosted some as well.

When it comes to speaking we often want to say yes to everything! In that desire to say yes to it all, we sell ourselves short and put ourselves on speaker listing sites that don’t show our value nor truly represent who we are. The “set it and forget” mentality with signing up for speaker directories isn’t going to work. Event organizers want long term relationships with their speakers and simply putting your contact info on a directory isn’t going to come close to establishing that. On today’s episode we’re going to discuss where you should be investing your time and how to ensure you’re standing out on the RIGHT directories.

Speaking is not one size fits all. I want speaking to be something that works for you and your business, not something that is extra on your plate or a distraction from the things that are really important in your life. It is really important to figure out what fits you best. I have found that there are 3 tiers when it comes to speaking as a creative business owner. And it can be difficult to determine what is important and what is not important in each tier. But I am here to help you with that! Let’s dive into the first episode and learn about these 3 tiers!
