Weâre back with part 2. Former car mechanic, Dr. Carl Allamby definitely didnât let anything stop him from achieving the dream he had suppressed from childhood. On part 2, he lets us know that although he had major challenges being the oldest in his med school class, the ONLY black male, and one of few who had changed careers, he still found the positive in it all and used family as motivation for success. It took a spark to remind him of this childhood dream and that was all she wrote. We learn what it took for him to overcome a childhood of poverty and low expectations from peers. This one was so good we had to bring it back. Have you ever heard of anyone getting 142 rejections from med school? Well now you have. Allow me to introduce you to this wonderful doc, Dr. Italo Brown. This is definitely one of my favorite episodes on this podcast. After listening to his story, you might never want to quit anything for the rest of your life. Itâs a journey of persistence hustle that ends with the HUGE reward of becoming a medical doctor. If thereâs ever been a BMWC podcast episode for you to shareâŠitâs this one!

We had the great honor of sitting down with the Hogstrom twins! These young doctors are taking the internet by storm educating and entertaining the masses. We enjoyed learning what inspired both twins to pursue medicine and how they have supported one another during the process. Theyâve got a very bright future ahead.

Growing up in poverty, not having the funds to pay for college, losing a father at an early age, and struggling to lift up a 1.8 GPA is a tall task for any premedical student. This is not the type of student typically accepted to medical school but all it took was 1 school to give Dr. Aaron Palmer a shot. His life experience understanding the struggle and overcoming these hardships led him to the top of his class and now into the prestigious field of Neurosurgery.

It's your mama 'n 'em favorite doctor, Stepps MD!!!!
Talk about perseverance and grit! Straigh out of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Dr. Stepps had to get it out the mud. Life threw him a number of curve balls that helped him find his purpose. He had to pick himself up from very dark places on multiple occasions but came out triumphant as one of the coolest doctors out here.

I had the honor of chatting with the surgeon and President of Howard University, Dr. Wayne Frederick. Talk about inspiring!!! He shares with us his early days in Trinidad and Tobago đčđč; diagnosed with sickle cell disease, to graduating from medical school at age 22, becoming a surgeon and ultimately president of the prestigious Howard University.
What does it take to be a mentor and what should a mentee be searching for in a mentor? Dr. Dale shares the origin of the word mentor on this episode and reminds us that the next Virtual Mentoring Lunch is Saturday, June 26th at 12pm EST. Register here (spots are limited): https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYudOGrrDMuE9H9uokrxe0wic_tKfB-0tJ-
On today's BMWC podcast episode we meet Dr. Ty!
Dr. Tyeese Gaines (AKA Dr. Ty) is well known for carving out her own path in life. She pursued her first love, Medicine becoming a board certified Emergency Physician BUT do you believe she did all this while pursuing a Masters, career in Journalism and raising her son!?! Very cool story showing us it is possible to do great things.
Student doctor Chris had no clue medicine was right for him until a program opened his eyes. Growing up in West Philly, he was blessed to have a supportive family. He hopes to give back to his community and become the first doctor in the family. He's got one year of med school down and before you know it, he'll be rockin' that long white coat. We also share our next MCAT scholarship recipient.
Our question this week is: "Should underrepresented minorities with lower MCAT scores be considered higher because they are minorities?"
It's not everyday you get to hear from someone who walked in space... We were honored to have the man, the legend, Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr join us as keynote speaker at our Black Men in White Coats Youth Sunmit. He has many firsts, including first Black man to perform a spacewalk. You will no doubt be I spired by his story.
Happy happy Monday! Our question this week is how does one answer diversity questions on their personal statement.
We are chopping it up with THE Teacher of the Year... Mr. Eric Hale! We go way back to his childhood fraught with pain and poverty. We learn what got him to turn the corner and how he uses his past to build up children and their communities. The passion he has for his kids is palpable. We talk deep on how to address the low numbers of black male teachers (<2%) and doctors (2%). You are in for a treat!
This week's premed question deals with the personal statement. What makes a personal statement standout to me? Check it out!
If you have a question for Dr. Dale, DM us a video on IG @teamBMWC. Join our Premed Mastermind sessions every Monday (www.PreMedMondays.com)
My guy, student doctor Joe Haynes has an awesome story! Currently a third year medical student, he is not letting anything stop him from achieving his childhood dream of becoming a Neurosurgeon. Hear his story from an ambitious childhood growing up in Guyana and Barbados, raised by a single mother and later landing in New York. He is the definition of determination and has a very bright future ahead.
This week's premed question of the week is how to get in good with your number 1 med school. Dr. Dale offers some tips on how to connect with your top school and learn if it's a good fit for you.
Let's talk about how Black Men in White Coats got started. On this episode I'll share how mentorship, a strong why and a village started a movement. We also announce the second MCAT scholarship winner!
A true champion for diversity and jack of all trades, Dr. McDade shares with us how a poor kid from the southside of Chicago thrived and paved the way for so many others. At age 15, he already graduated from high school and quickly surrounded himself with greatness. His story is truly inspiring.
This is important info for high school students. Want to know how to get off to a good start when entering college? Check out the gems Dr. Dale drops for yall.
If you've seen the film "Black Men in White Coats" then you were probably moved by this young future doc. This was an awesome discussion with Melvin "Trip" and his mother Ms. LaToya Randle. This is one you don't want to miss.
As a premed you've done a whole lot of great things on your journey but there's only enough room for a few activities on your application. How do you choose which ones? Dr. Dale shares his thoughts on the matter. Oh and did we mention... WE ARE PAYING A BUNCH OF MCAT FEES!!! Huge shout-out to our non-profit Diverse Medicine Inc and the Black Greek Letter Organization for making this possible. Details in video. Join our premed Mastermind group every Monday evening. Check out www.PreMedMondays.com.
I was honored to have a long time buddy of mine, Dr. Danielle Ward share her amazing journey to medicine. She shares how her relentless mindset allowed her to overcome a 2.2 GPA and low MCAT scores to now getting accepted to plastic surgery residency. Did I mention she accomplished this as a single mother? You don't want to miss this episode.
Happy happy Monday! Our discussion this Monday is on what premed students can do while waiting to hear back from medical schools. Let's make this a great week!
This week, we speak with one of Chicago's finest, Dr. Carl Lambert. We learn how his upbringing molded him into a top-notch, humble and compassionate physician. He shares with us the role his faith has played in caring for his patients and how he was selected in the recent LeBron James commercial.

What's up fam! Today is PreMed Mondays. We run a PreMed Mastermind group that meets on Monday evenings and the idea came up to answer a premed question on the BMWC every Monday. Today's question comes from one of our PreMed Mondays members (www.PreMedMondays.com), Kim. She's curious about establishing and maintaining relationships with Deans at Medical schools. Thanks for the question Kim.

One of the questions I'm often asked is what means do I use to impact my mission! Well....writing books is definitely one of them. In this episode, I'm joined by my buddy Dr. Stephen Noble who is cardiothoracic surgeon and new author. We discuss using children's books as a vehicle to increase interest in medicine for youth. Both Dr. Noble and I have just released new books and we'll briefly discuss our books as well. The take home point of this episode is...be creative in your efforts to have a positive impact!
Also, both Dr. Noble and I will be giving our book out for free in eBook version for 3 days.

Hill Harper needs no introduction! I've been watching this award winning actor on TV since I was a child back in the Al Bundy days and now as Dr. Marcus Andrews on the hit TV show, The Good Doctor. But to make that the highlight of his intro would be a disservice. Hill Harper is a brilliant mind! The man is a best-selling author, Ivy League Valedictorian, philanthropist, and so much more. In this episode, Hill shares how we can take an active role in shaping our own lives towards success!

Meet Dr. Marius Chukwurah. He was that guy in college. You know, the one on stage who did a little bit of everything. The one everyone on campus knew. Meet Dr. Bryan Ego-Osuala. Although he's a super smart Otolaryngologist, he's often felt as if he "didn't belong". Growing up in a Nigerian household, pursuing the field of medicine was strongly encouraged and his parents were his biggest supporters. What I love most about Dr. Ego-Osuala is his humility. In this episode, he shares one of his biggest mistakes and the impact it had on his life.

Dr. Queenie Wilkins just quit her job as an anesthesiologist but she couldn't be happier. She didn't leave the field and is still practicing, she's just doing it on her own accord now. Growing up in a single parent household with minimal financial resources, Dr. Wilkins made no excuses and decided to excel in life. Hear how she did it and how she views motherhood as a Black Woman in a White Coat!

He served as the 112th president of the National Medical Association and has many other accolades that would amaze you. But his journey to success hasnât been straightforward. What is up family! As 2020 comes to an end, we're closing it with a podcast request that so many of you had. After Student Dr. Adeyemi's episode, we had requests to hear more from him so that's what we're doing. Specifically, people were interested in why he went to a Caribbean medical school. In this episode, I interview him we dive in deep about this idea of whether or not to "risk" attending a Caribbean medical school. This is an episode that so many of you wanted. Here it is! Happy New Year Fam!

Meet student Dr. Folarin Adeyemi. A 2.5 GPA isn't stopping him from achieving his dreams! This is definitely one of my favorite episodes...(I say that a lot..but for real for real). I love the jovial tone he brings not only to this podcast, but to the field of medicine. Student Dr. Adeyemi is walking his own path and destined for success. He's had his struggles along the journey but all the way, he keeps his head up and stays on the grind. When you're done with this episode, I'm willing to bet you'll be just a little happier than when you started!

Meet Dr. Jon Menachem, a white doctor who wants the best for all! After the murder of George Floyd, Dr. Menachem called me with a strategy to help increase mentorship for black men pursuing medical careers. He wasn't just talking, he actually had a plan that could be put in action. He and I go way back to our residency years at Duke where we cared for patients together. From the start, we've always had open conversations about race. This is just another one, but this time, open for all to hear.

When I stop and think about it...I've felt that way too. Dr. Wilder is a Transplant Hepatologist who takes pride in serving his community. As you'll hear in this episode, one thing he points out is that a great deal of his success, has come from doing just that...serving his community.

COVID-19 is running rampant. Initially, I didn't want to use this podcast as a medical platform but enough people have inquired and suggested we put out a brief update. As my buddy Dr. Caldwell said regarding COVID-19...THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!! It's VERY important that we understand the very basics of what is going on with COVID and our efforts to address this pandemic.

Student Doctor Hillman Batuo brings a very DIFFERENT perspective to the Black Men In White Coats podcast. A medical student in the Netherlands, he grew up in Cameroon which was a very different setting. Student Doctor Batuo mentions says something in this podcast that was very striking...he explains his feelings of awe and amazement when interacting with white people and a sense of inferiority to them. Hear how he overcame that feeling and continues his grind of excellence!!

Meet Dr. Ray Wurapa, orthopedic surgeon and co-owner of TruColourBandages.com. I absolutely LOVE this episode. Dr. Wurapa has an amazing approach to life; one that is refreshingly positive. As an accomplished orthopedic surgeon, he could be boastful and arrogant, but rather he is humble and kind. This comes across in a genuine manner throughout his podcast episode. If more docs had this same approach, medicine would be a much better field.

One of the most powerful things you can do for yourself, is to make someone else's day better. Each day, we get to choose how we make others feel. Adding positivity to the world is good for everyone including YOU! Many people fail to realize how brightening someone else's day can improve theirs too. My challenge to you today is to compliment someone. See how you change their day in that moment. While doing so, you'll improve your day too.

The starting point to success is having mental clarity. We all get distracted from the billions of things in our day to day lives. These distractions cause a haziness in our minds. To become successful, you must have clarity of thought. You have to know what your gifts are, what your message to the world is, and how to get it out there to serve others. That's what clarity is about.

Ever wonder where the term "mentor" comes from? #MaximizeMonday by getting a real mentor. The easiest way to figure out how to do something is for someone who has done it to show you. Mentors can make or break you. The most successful people in the world tend to have great mentors that helped them get there. The mistake that most people make is not knowing what a real mentor is or how to get one. Maximize your Monday by taking a moment to ask yourself if you have real mentors.

I've known Student Dr. Fowler for a few years now and am extremely impressed with his grit. The take home message from this episode is that there are no excuses not to achieve your goals. He is the first person in his family to graduate college, and with little academic guidance, made it a priority to figure out how to become a doctor. Kudos to you Student Dr. Fowler.

Meet Student Doctor Foreman. This is one excellent guy! I've had the honor of getting to know him a little when he shadowed me in the hospital. I love a lot of things about this episode, but what stands out most is Justin's humility. He comes across as a very humble young man with tons of wisdom to share. These are the type of role models with want to promote on Black Men In White Coats and the type of doctors we hope to see in the medical field. Another thing I truly appreciate about his story is his desire to continually improve. As Justin puts it, he's not competing against others, he's just trying to get better day by day!

Dr. Robert Amajoyi is more than a doctor, he's a man of vision. As a colorectal surgeon, he doesn't limit his life's possibilities to the operating room. This man aims to excel at life. Among the reasons I love this episode is his passion for personal development. As an individual who spends a lot of time studying how to get the most out of life, it was very refreshing to hear that Dr. Amajoyi does the same thing. It's no wonder why he's a successful surgeon. Be inspired by this episode!

Meet Student Dr. Darnell Gordon. He has the heart of a servant. Student Dr. Gordon is a 3rd year medical students who strives to help others at every possible opportunity. One of the things I love about this episode is his clarity in describing the things that made him want to be a great doctor. This started at home with a family that modeled kindness and generosity. It then transitioned to him witnessing the excellent care a surgeon provided to his mother. One key takeaway message from this episode is you never know how your actions will impact others. Always be on your best behavior!

Eric Poole has the gift of encouragement. His journey to medical school has not been an easy one, but you'd never know that from the excitement in his voice. Through his ups and downs, Student Doctor Poole has kept the faith and remained persistent. As he shares with us in this episode, he didn't make a straight A's in his sciences classes, he actually made straight C's. However, he didn't quit because he knew what he wanted. Once he "aligned his focus wit what he said he wanted", success came knocking on his door!

Student Dr. Yomi Adeyemi is on his way to greatness. This innovative young man has had quite the journey to get where he is today. Through it all, he kept a positive attitude and didn't quit. What impresses me most about Student Dr. Adeyemi is his drive and discipline. In high school his coach gave him a special recognition for never missing a day of practice. This work ethic has translated to his early career in medicine. Enjoy the episode!

Meet Dr. B.K. Edmond, a cardiac anesthesiologist on a mission to get more black male doctors. This is a GREAT episode. Listen to it twice. Dr. Edmond and I chat via phone every so often and his enthusiasm never ceases to excite me. This doc is on fire for the mission. In this episode, he drops gems of wisdom about what it takes to be successful. More meaningful to me is his emphasis on what it means to give back.

Dr. Early Stewart is a true servant. Â As a Meharry Medical College graduate, he practices the motto, "Worship of God Through Service of Mankind." Â He has a story of gratefulness and eagerness. Â Â There aren't too many doctors out there who approach medicine with the heart that he does. Â Beyond that, he truly desires to give back by mentoring those who dream of pursuing a similar career path to his own. Â A very special thank you to Dr. Stewart for being a guest on this episode.

Dr. Emmanuel Chandler is a Pediatric & Adolescent Physician. Along his journey, he has appreciated the power of having a strong network and being intentional. My favorite portion of his episode is when he discusses how he and his family strategized for his success from an early age. Also, his general theme is not giving up and relying on his network for support. Along his journey, Dr. Chandler had multiple people step into his life and provide that much needed motivation. You'll appreciate the importance of network after listening to this episode!

Dr. Dickson is well accomplished on many levels and drops knowledge throughout this entire podcast episode.  Perhaps most impressive is how he breaks down the impact of hip hop culture on his journey through medicine.  As he put it, he was raised in a culture of survival which played a significant role in his development.   Â

One day while working in the emergency room, Dr. Steve Spencer was curious to know how many patients and their family members had on something with a confederate flag. He decided to count. It turns out that 20% of them did. Imaging being a black man and the only doctor in an ER where 1 in 5 patients walk in wearing a confederate flag item. How would that make you feel? Would it affect your practice? Check out how Dr. Spencer handles it.
