James Fry is living proof that our past doesn’t have to define us. Though he’s walked many dark valleys, James has become a light for others, eagerly pointing them to a relationship with God. At less than two years old, Child Protective Services found James and his twin brother at home—alone—and terribly sick. After months in the hospital, they entered foster care, and didn’t meet their biological father until years later—a painful day that James will never forget.
Fast forward to his 20s, and James was at an all-time low. Nothing he tried seemed to work, and he found himself struggling with alcoholism and still bearing the pain of his father’s rejection. That’s when a kind neighbor invited him to church……

Oh, to be kids again. Jerrid Knight and James Grier have fond memories of boxing matches, wrestling tournaments, snowball fights—the wholesome fun that brothers enjoy. They also remember broken bones, when James made Jerrid pass out, and trading away a Mickey Mantle baseball card by accident. Live and learn, right?
After high school, both brothers joined the military—an experience they credit with instilling the character and discipline that helped them get where they are today. “Jerry, just remember—when you go to New York, God’s already been there [working] in that person’s life.” Jerry McCorkle recalls his father’s wise instruction before leaving on a mission trip to New York City to spread the gospel. Over the years, he’s learned that God does indeed go before us, sending “signals” to people in everyday life that prepare them to receive the Good News.
Nearly 30 years later, those mission trips are still happening. It started in 1996 with Jerry and some college students. Today, Spread Truth Ministries is an international effort that equips Christians to share their faith. “I was just a lost, hurt soul….trying to find my way, and I just couldn’t.”
That’s how Teresa describes the lowest moment of her life—homeless and hopeless as a single mom, bouncing from shelter to shelter, even fighting a legal battle for her son. But the seed of faith—planted years before by her grandfather—carried her through the storm. “The only thing I knew to do was pray…..I knew that He was there…..God never leaves you,” Teresa says.
And just at the right moment, she got the chance to attend CDL School on a full-ride grant—the first step towards a new life. The past few years have been a journey, but Teresa points to God’s faithfulness again and again. With the help of generous friends and a praying community around her, Teresa found her way—out of homelessness, into trucking, and eventually to Nussbaum. What were you doing at 19 years old? For Carter Fehr and Jordan Kersten, the answer is “working full-time as an OTR driver.” But wait—don’t you have to be 21 for that? Yes—unless you’re part of the FMCSA Safe Driver Apprenticeship Program (SDAP, for short).
With SDAP, under-21 drivers can cross state lines and drive over the road. In the past, our industry would lose high school graduates to other skilled trades, but if successful, this program could open trucking as a career path for young people!

Known for their servant hearts and calming phone presence, Peg and Michaela enjoy helping our drivers navigate day-to-day challenges. HR/Safety conversations aren’t always fun, but they’ve found that a little compassion goes a long way. At home, they’re busy managing households and being intentional in motherhood and grandparenting. “It was like the end of the world.” That’s how Kenol Aurelus, now a Professional Driver for Nussbaum, describes the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010. It was an unforgettable day – especially since he was right next to the Presidential Palace when the ground started shaking!
Once nominated as the Best Photographer in all of Haiti, Kenol was holding his camera when the earthquake hit. In the aftermath, he captured what would become world-renowned photographs of the devastation. He even met CNN anchor Anderson Cooper!

Where did these ideas come from? Why use trailers?
Believe it or not, the story begins in 1990, when Brent Nussbaum (now our CEO) left the family business he would eventually run. In today’s exchange, Brent discusses how that decision introduced him to the world of trailer graphics and eventually led him back to Nussbaum. He also shares how a Nussbaum driver and the book Loving Monday transformed his view of business and inspired him to make Nussbaum a ministry. But the story doesn’t end there…….

Doug Moore’s DM Team Spotlight Let’s squash your doubt as a driver – Douglas’ 4DX Team wants to reduce incoming calls from drivers, but it’s not because they don’t want you to call.
Several of Nussbaum’s Driver Managers have spent time behind the wheel, and they’re working hard to improve the experience for current drivers by wiping out long hold times, giving complete answers to questions through early phone calls, and sending total mail text messages.

Navigating the Numbers
With 18 years as Nussbaum’s CFO, Bill Wettstein has helped navigate Nussbaum through everything from temperate waters to tumultuous waves. Overseeing accounting and sales is in his job description, but he broadens it to reach every employee individually.
Mainly, probably my favorite part, is just spending quite a bit of time with employees from all the departments and learning what their joys and fears are and seeing what we can do different.
Keeping the Engine Running Bill’s pushed Nussbaum through some scary times. Take a step back in time and relive times of transition and uncertainty and how crisis only pushed management and employees to knuckle down and get creative. That’s what keeps this company running – outstanding people who strive for success.
Bill: At that point we were pricing freight to make bank payments, not to make money.

Laughter is the Best Medicine If you’ve ever met Brian Cannon, you’ve probably heard a joke, or three, and seen your share of humorous antics. There is no question that Brian likes to keep things light in the office and make sure that those around him enjoy coming to work each day.
I think laughter is important. There is time for it of course, but I think the more you can smile and laugh the better life you’ll have, and I think it does good for your overall health.
Fighting Childhood Cancer After a history of cancer in his family, and seeing friends fight childhood cancer, Brian has developed a passion for helping other families who are fighting the ‘C’ Word. Brian is an active St. Jude runner who has participated in local runs to raise funds and awareness for the last 10 years. Growing up near the sights and sounds of Wrigley Field, Mike Vanyzendoorn first found himself behind the wheel of a truck running the streets of Chicago with next to no experience. Years later, the seasons of life eventually led Mike to Nussbaum. This week we talk with Mike about being a driver and pastor and what he looks forward to as a performance coach at Nussbaum.
Driver Mike got his start as a driver rather abruptly when a friend asked him to team up and launch a company with him. At that time, Mike hadn’t even experienced “driving with a stick in a car,” let alone in a truck. However, that didn’t stop him, and before long he was making his way in the streets of Chicago.
Pastor After a while, Mike was called upon to shift gears and become a full-time pastor in his church. During this season of life, Mike continued to grow through experience children’s ministry, then adult ministry, and mentorship.
Missionary Later in life, Mike returned to trucking where he eventually made his way to Nussbaum. However, that hasn’t changed his passion for people or his desire to help others succeed. He continues to mentor others both as a performance coach and through a ministry that takes regular trips to a surprising location.

Quinton Barrett and Jay Green of People Element join us to talk about measuring employee engagement, collecting data and the importance of sharing it, and how Nussbaum measures up.
Jay (left) and Quinton of People Element Who Is People Element People Element specialize in partnering with businesses and organizations to help them build on their most crucial asset… their people. They offer many services from personality assessment to new hire onboarding, employee engagement surveys, and more.
Nussbaum partners with People Element to conduct an annual employee engagement survey. People Element provides an excellent way for us to allow employees to share their thoughts and opinions anonymously so that we can get an accurate measure of how engaged employees are and see what we can focus on to improve as a company.
How Do the Surveys Work If you’ve ever taken a survey at all, chances are you have answered questions utilizing something known as the Likert Scale. You know, the questions that ask you to rate whether you agree, or disagree with a statement on a 5 point scale.
People Element designs a survey using the Likert scale combined with positive, to-the-point statements/questions about every part of the business. They then administer the survey by providing employees with both online and phone-based means to participate. The goal is not only to measure where the company stands but to determine what drives engagement at the company and in what can be done to help bring engagement up. Then share the results with the whole company to help drive transparency at every level.
“We can say Nussbaum is 80% engaged and maybe that’s helpful, but what’s really helpful is that we ask a lot of other questions that can help us determine what drives engagement.”

How Does Nussbaum Measure Up

To hear Quinton and Jay talk about Nussbaum’s numbers, one might think there is nowhere to go but down. In fact, Quinton admits to saying as much after last year’s survey. Yet we continue to evaluate and make incremental improvements each year.
Quinton highlights how we stack up on some of the standard questions they use industry-wide and notes how we tend to score above average.
Lines represent the difference between Nussbaum scores and the Industry Benchmark per question. Blue is above average and red is below. We think these results are pretty impressive and tell the story of a workforce who are passionate about what they do and want to be an active part of building a great company.
But this is only a small part of the picture. There are always things we can work on and be better at. So we dig into the data to identify those weaker spots and take action over the year.

4DX Spotlight Nussbaum’s sales team has set itself a wildly important goal of resolving 10 bad lanes. What makes a bad lane? To answer that question, the sales team has been working closely with drivers to discuss problem areas and pinpoint the big, recurring issues they face. Then they work with customers to find solutions. The results are felt on both sides with more efficiency customers and a better experience for drivers. No Bad Days Being “on his own” since around the age of 14, Chris Chaney is no stranger to challenge. In fact, you might even say he’s had his fair share of bad days. But according to Chris, there is no such thing as a bad day. Chris talks about how faith and some key people in his life helped him grow and learn to overcome his challenging days, find joy, and develop a passion to help others find joy too.
I understand that I am going through some challenges, but there’s someone who’s going through far greater challenge than I. So, if I can just say something, if I can smile a certain way, whatever I can do to bring joy to them.
Make a Joyful Noise He may not sound like Cory Henry, but as someone who plays the organ, piano, drums and bass guitar, Chris has an evident love for music and making a joyful noise. In his words:
I am not a professional at anything I play. But I understand music… and the melody that David played on the harp in the Bible is what I think about when I’m playing for Christ.

Patience – a virtue that we pray for but also sweat when God forces us to grow it. Clark Reed is a patience pro and a successful driver. But he unloads how he’s far from perfect.
Support at Home Take a seat in Clark’s home life – how his better half, JoAnne, takes care of worries and burdens so he can go OTR, how proud he is of his children, and the relational challenges of coming and going each month, especially with his son with autism.
Look around Nussbaum, and you’ll see his face frequently – in photos, videos, and articles. But he doesn’t do it to puff his chest. He’s leaving a legacy for his children. He’s not “just” a truck driver – he’s a truck driver with a passion to do his job well.
Out on the Road Sick of the same view and four walls, Clark left the stresses of the office for the freedom of the truck cab.

He waxes on his skilled driving habits and how patience is key. But he hasn’t always been the model driver – share some laughs and a few gasps as he tells rookie stories and explains how some things are just out of your control.
Patience Ah, patience. We all crave it, but it’s always elusive when tensions run high, and blood starts boiling. Clark brings his patience around to raising children, focusing on the positive, and knowing that sometimes, things are out of your hands.
He’s human. He’s not perfect. And you’ll feel like you’re in the room swapping stories in this episode with Clark.

40 Years at Nussbaum Garrie dives into his longevity at Nussbaum. From his first glimpse of the company, through 23 years in a truck cab, and the twists of transitioning into the office for 17 years (and counting).

He divulges how the hardest part of being a driver isn’t the terrible traffic, the uncooperative weather, or the waiting. It’s being away from home.
48 Years Together Even though they lived two miles apart their entire lives, Garrie and Avis’ love story didn’t start until Garrie graduated from high school. And even then, it wasn’t all fireworks and heart eyes – Avis’ mom liked Garrie before Avis did! But Avis was the first girl Garrie ever dated, and she’s dedicated to being the last girl he ever dates.
Infatuation molded into love as life carried on – bending, shaping, and opening each other’s eyes to what dedication, protection, and steadfastness meant.

The Art of Showing Up Garrie and Avis will inspire you with gumption – guaranteed – with the art of showing up. At work, in your marriage, while driving… Show up. Just show up each day. With a master’s degree in conflict resolution, years serving as a mediator in the Cook County Courthouse, and a joyful laugh that’ll make you smile, Jim is excited to start his station with Nussbaum. He may play sides when it comes to professional baseball, but he’s the supportive sounding board we all need for day-to-day life.
His Services He expounds on the services he provides, from marriage counseling to hospital visits, and his commitment to being present, when asked, through the good, the bad, and the ugly.
