Ready to change how you think about cybersecurity?
Every other week, Mimecast’s Brian Pinnock and Alice Jeffrey are joined by a special guest for tales of risk, reward and just a dash of ridiculousness.
Whether it’s a tech expert who is not your average CIO or an expert from a field you wouldn’t expect, we’ll be exploring the lesser seen side of cybersecurity – to learn how we can all improve in the fight to stay safe.
In this episode of Phishy Business, we talk about the improper mindset of not thinking about security until after you have been breached, and some of the major problems this can cause. We do this through the lens of SIEM, ethical hacking, and a focus on the need for leadership in teaching organizations how to be secure. We also discuss how some IT leaders try to keep the results of pen testing quiet.
Our special guest is Dez Rock, CEO of SIEMonster. After dropping out of law school, Dez became an entrepreneur and has run businesses for the last 20 years. Dez has spent a good deal of time in ethical hacking, building great experiences and great stories over the years with both physical and virtual security. She also has plenty of great insights about being a female CEO with ADHD in the cybersecurity industry.
In ‘Exposing Shortcomings in Cybersecurity Leadership and why we need more Dana Scullys’, we discuss:
In this episode of Phishy Business, we talk about various important discussions around AI, including the concerning issue of built-in bias and stereotypes. Imagine AI thinking that all doctors must be male, and all nurses must be female? Well, according to ChatGPT, they are.
Our special guest is Ivana Bartoletti, Global Privacy Officer at Wipro. Ivana has a human rights background and is an internationally recognized thought leader in privacy, data protection, and responsible technology. She’s a fellow at Virginia Tech, a published author, and the founder of the Women Leading in AI Network. In this episode of Phishy Business, we discuss the very definition of ransomware and how it can be an overused and underdefined concept. We also take a closer look at the world of threat research.
Our special guest is former professional hacker Charl van der Walt, Head of Security Research at Orange CyberDefense, who now spends his time asking and answering the important questions around cybersecurity, specifically those that pertain to ransomware.
Charl believes we need to move beyond the term ransomware and look more at the concept of cyber extortion because the days of one-off ransomware attacks have given way to a massive, highly profitable, well-organized cyber-crime industry. Charl is working to ensure cybersecurity professionals look at ransomware more in terms as being part of a series of crimes in which security is breached and then something of value is taken and held for ransom. This is because ransom attacks are moving beyond just denial of access to data and are more frequently including confidential data exposure and denial of service in some form.

Have you heard of carbon spider, mythic leopard and even ocean buffalo? These are all code names for some of the biggest cyberattacks of 2020, code names created by the threat intelligence experts tracking activities of these cyberattacks.
Crowdstrike’s Derek Buchanan and Mimecast's Dr. Francis Gaffney help us understand how to predict, find and remediate cyber threats. Francis and Derek shed some light on what threat intelligence means, what they’re teams do and how companies can combat sophisticated multi-vector attacks.
In this episode of Phishy Business – Predicting tomorrow’s news today, we discuss:

Did you know that the average person checks their phone 47 times a day? While this a surprising number, this is also a very plausible number.
This week we dive into the world of the generation who was born with technology and the internet, Generation Z, with author of Born Digital and Chairman of UK finance Bob Wigley. We discuss how they develop an online world personalised just for them that can seem more attractive than the real one, talk about the effects of being constantly connected, and what world this generation want to create.
In this episode of Phishy Business- Generation Z – the Born Digital generation – we explore:

Did you know it’s possible to be imprisoned on a database, but not in actual reality?
While the idea may seem strange, this is the case for thousands of people around the world, whether they know it or not. With data breaches happening all the time, personal information is traded freely by unscrupulous forces on the dark web. It begs the question if anyone is truly safe from having their identity stolen. So, what lessons can we learn from these instances of misfortune? And how can we protect ourselves?
Luckily this week we have best-selling author and journalist Maria Genova here to help uncover some mysterious tales of identity theft. She is joined by Mimecast’s Dr Kiri Addison, our Head of Data Science for Threat Intelligence and Overwatch.
In the sixth episode of Phishy Business, Curious cases of identity theft with Maria Genova, we discuss:

Cybercrime can be a very mysterious area. But for the uninitiated, the world of marketing can seem equally obscure. It’s easy to feel lost between complex marketing theories and incredibly sophisticated technology. But the realms of cybersecurity and marketing are colliding ever more frequently, with the rise of brand exploitation and growing role of data. And of course, both are fundamentally about building trusted relationships.
It’s time for us to peek beyond the forms, venturing beyond the safety of cybersecurity into the world of marketing. And Latané Conant, Chief Market Officer at 6Sense, is the perfect guide.
In the fifth episode of Phishy Business, Peeking beyond the forms at the mysterious world of marketing, we discuss:
Latané fundamentally believes that no technology company is selling a service: “we’re selling change.” That means we must start with building trust – and inspiration – by putting customers at the heart of everything we do.

Picture a room full of one hundred IT specialists (or in today’s world, a screen of one hundred IT specialists). Going by the industry average, only 18 of those specialists would be female – while if we were looking at the C-suite, it would fall to just three. When cybersecurity is facing a skills shortage, it’s madness that the industry is failing to attract women. And Kerissa Varma, the Group CISO of Old Mutual Limited, and Clare Johnson, Partnerships and Outreach Manager for Digital and STEM and founder of the Women in Cyber Wales cluster, say it’s time to do something about it.
In the fourth episode of Phishy Business- Recruiting incredible women in cybersecurity, we discuss:
Kerissa and Clare are clear that if you have one type of person in the room, you’ll only get one view back – and that can be a major vulnerability for in cybersecurity. By looking for character, enthusiasm, and innate skills, we can expand our talent pool and recruit incredible women. And you can find out how in the full episode.

In just three months in 2020, there were more than 900,000 spam messages and 48,000 malicious URLs – all related to Covid-19.
At the same time, groups from the World Health Organisation to Interpol were issuing warnings about a surge in online threats. There’s no doubt cybercrime has become headline news. But author and investigative journalist Geoff White has been covering hacking since it was a niche topic. Geoff believes the dynamics behind cybercrime are fascinating – and attitudes towards victims must change if we’re to combat it collectively.
In the third episode of Phishy Business, we discuss:
In Geoff’s view, people tend to think about cybercrime like they’d think about Godzilla: a terrifying monster that occasionally rears its head from the depths, causing fear, panic and uncertainty. He wants to shed light on where cybercrime comes from and what might be next, so that we can protect ourselves together. And you can find out how in the full episode.

Acronyms have been taking the data privacy world by storm. Who can forget GDPR coming into force in 2018?
Well, now there’s a shiny new protection of personal information law on the scene: South Africa’s POPIA, which comes into force in July 2021. And of course, 9,000 miles due north, Brexit is yet another development impacting data privacy and protection. It’s a lot for businesses to unpick. But luckily, we’ve been joined by Dario Milo, an expert in information law, data protection and privacy.
In the second episode of Phishy Business, we discuss:
Dario believes that data protection is about trust, not just compliance – and businesses should view privacy as a business must, not just a regulatory obligation. Tune in to find out how.

We all know a business’ cybersecurity is only as strong as its people. And that’s where Jenny Radcliffe comes in.
Known as the People Hacker, Jenny is a psychologist and social engineer who helps her clients assess their security by breaking into their organisations, often without technology.
In the very first episode of Phishy Business, we discuss:
Jenny is clear that victims of cybercrime certainly aren’t stupid – and it’s up to businesses to put the technology and communication in place to keep people and systems safe.
