It has been a long time coming for who I deem "The Smartest Man in Baseball", to come onto this podcast. Paul Davis is the Atlanta Brave's Director of Pitching, former Major League Pitching coach for the Seattle Mariner's, and my former colleague when we worked for the St. Louis Cardinals together where Paul served alongside me with the rehab group as the "Rehab Pitching Coach" while I served as the St. Louis Cardinals Medical & Rehab Coordinator from 2015 through the end of the 2017 season. Most of all Paul is a dear friend and mentor of mine.
Building upon the last episode where I first mention Psychological Capital (PsyCap), Paul and I discuss how he has integrated psychology into his work as a pitching coach to get the most performance out of those he serves and how this can also help all of us in our own life's version of High Stakes performance needs.
Paul Davis was interviewed for part of the book The Arm which we discuss in this episode.

Cue in a mental approach...I talk a lot about time zero the first moments after injury where not only everything changes going forward for one’s body but also for one's mental and emotional state, and in some cases their entire identity. In this episode I get a little vulnerable here and go deeper into athlete zero whose mental health crisis changed my practice forever and is at the heart of my entire new approach that I have developed. This is a real person…Eventually that became my book and this podcast. Some of you might have heard me share some of this before but not like I am about to…

In the first few modules I cover "Time Zero" and "Pain Science" in order to better help guide those first moments after injury or your low point as a high performer. These can be some of the scariest times filled with a roller coaster of emotions and this is why it is so important to work on the mental and emotional elements of the post-injury process. It can be confusing when feeling and thinking all of the things that we do when faced with a physical crisis as an athlete. This episode will help you better guide that process yourself alongside your performance team.

Mental toughness seems to have been preached and praised to athletes as long as athletes have competed...But the problem lies when already "mentally tough" athletes find themselves broken (mentally and physically) after injury. This episode is a special one...George Terris started his first day of PT school getting his doctorate at the University of St. Augustine San Marcos on Monday May 10th 2021, the day that this episode was published live. This episode certainly can't be easily summarized as he shares his answer to a common question Physical Therapists get which is "Why did you become a Physical Therapist!?". I can't think of any other Physical Therapist with a more profound answer. One that George hopes to help change many many lives with inside of the profession and outside of Physical Therapy.

This is a "Mindfulness 101" episode I recorded initially on March 30th in which I share my own mindfulness journey and how it has played a pivotal role in my own personal and professional development.
In the intro I speak about a powerful book I recently read titled Unwinding Anxiety written by acclaimed Psychiatrist Dr. Judson Brewer who I heard on a Rich Roll Podcast episode as a guest. I am hopeful to have Dr. Brewer share more on the research he has completed on mindfulness and the way that it can impact many of our "habit loops" including anxiety, chronic pain, over-eating, and even procrastinating. In the meantime here is my take on mindfulness.
Remember these 3 fundamental elements I have found to be so important when it comes to mindfulness.

Dr. Carl Bescoby is an injury psychologist who graduated with his PhD from Bath University in England holding professional qualifications in Sport and Exercise Psychology. A lot of his research has focused around organ transplant recipients and physical activity as a means of mental, physical, and emotional well-being. This is a man I wish my father (who my book Injured to Elite is dedicated to) had met during his life being that he underwent two kidney transplants due to chronic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis. It just so happens that he was also a childhood athlete and a huge lover of sports. In this episode Dr.Bescoby is going to share a ground breaking treatment strategy which has been getting more attention recently that addresses the mental side of injury rehabilitation known as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), with psychological flexibility as a main tenant. There have been some great papers written on ACT which was developed by Dr. Steven Hayes. ACT prioritizes the use of metaphors, identifying individual values, and enabling the athlete to accept their situation to be able to grow from it. This is now an area that closely aligns with my work and development of The Injured to Elite framework which prioritizes the mental side of rehabilitation. Dr. Bescoby and I are working on leading the way to an integrated and evolved approach to better addressing the needs of athletes after injury.

Enough walking out of the Doctor's office in a state of massive confusion...In this episode I give you a sneak peak into my book Injured to Elite and share with you Chapter 3 Titled: "Conversations with Professionals". As told to me by some of my community, "The transcript of this chapter should be stamped on the door of your Doctor's Office!". This needs to be heard by anyone receiving any type of medical care, which is really all of us at some point or another. Why? Because thus far we have been ill equipped with the right knowledge on how to improve our conversations that we have with those who care for us. So I am working to change that.
Help me and share this with everyone, this might just save somebody's quality of life!

The Doctor told him that he couldn’t do it…Emily Ritter accounts the life of her late husband, Aaron Shor who defied all odds completing 7 Marathons (6 NYC, and 1 LA) as a para-athlete who faced very serious physical challenges, living with polymyositis. It just so happened that my book Injured to Elite got into her hands as she is also the consignment manager at Book Revue of Huntington Long Island, one of the top independent bookstores in the country. This episode really hit home for me being that I am the son of a man who himself (The Late Dean Meyer whom my book is dedicated) had chronic illness and subsequent serious physical obstacles he faced due to that. Family is everything when it comes to supporting someone through physical challenges. Somehow my work was put into Emily’s hands and I can now say that Injured to Elite is in its first bookstore. Listen in to learn how laughter and love supported Aron through immense adversity helping him complete astounding physical accomplishments.

This episode will totally change your view on both the science of pain and on our brain itself! Today I am joined by one of the leading world expert on Pain Science, Dr.Mark Hutchinson who is a Professor within the Adelaide Medical School and is the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale BioPhotonics in Australia. His leading work on immunology of the brain and pain science has now discovered that our thoughts and emotions have an actual effect on our immunity and overall health. These so-called pattern recognition receptors and other molecules might just be the interface between our thoughts and actual immune response. This episode can be thought of as the science which is bringing serious western "clout" to eastern medicine. There has never been such an abrupt halt in Sports operations at the scholastic, collegiate, and professional level. Now is such a perfect moment for many athletes to press that much needed reset button taking a positive in such a seemingly negative time. Instead of posting #Daynumber...without any baseball, it is time to become more comfortable in the calm and search within to figure out who you are not just as an athlete but as a person to become a limitless athlete!
Danny Arroyo @limitless369 embodies the definition of a limitless athlete ever since he took the plunge into his spiritual side while playing college and indie league baseball. Danny was dissatisfied with the toxic lifestyle he was living that many high level athletes have difficulty breaking away from and went down a path of learning about higher forces and searched within. Now Danny has become a holistic health coach where he integrates diet, essential oils, meditation, and overall service to others in order to uplift both his own game as he continues to play baseball at a high level, in addition to those he serves in the peace run organization which was started by Sri Chinmoy who he credits as one of his early teachers through studying his philosophy.

DISCLAIMER: WE ARE NOT SUGGESTING THE USE OF ANY MIND ALTERING SUBSTANCES AND SIMPLY SHARING OUR THOUGHTS & EXPERIENCES ON THIS TOPIC. PLEASE CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL FOR FURTHER INFORMATION. A hot topic in baseball is the testing of recreational drug use and for a long time marijuana has been banned at the minor league level, however as a 40 man roster player they are not testing for the use of recreational drugs . Well that rule was just overturned and many minor leaguer players were quite happy to hear that with how prevalent marijuana use is for many athletes to "escape". Perhaps many athletes are uncomfortable with facing themselves during the quiet moments in-between competition as they are encouraged to "keep their heads in the game" which could explain the rampant use of mild altering substances in competitive sports. John and I dive into this topic and he shares his personal experiences with the use of acid.
TV Producer Aron Plucinski who has worked in Hollywood on very successful shows such as Undercover Boss and Ice Road Truckers, joins the Podcast on Episode 19 where he shares his amazing story of going from Injured to Elite from not just a physical standpoint but from a mental, emotional, and spiritual standpoint amongst these times. We need to share more positive stories like his as we are being inundated with negative storytelling. Aron shares a pivotal point in his life when he lost a family member which spurred on a spiritual journey to the Himalayas of India. Listen in on this episode to his journey as it continues with his new found passion to end the stupidification of America, and serving others through positivity.

Hello and welcome back to the injured to elite podcast with your host me Dr. Dave Meyer Dream Coach and Performance Physical Therapist. Today we have an extraordinary guest, Mateo Difontaine. The story you are about to hear is graphic, emotional, and like no other story you have heard before. Mateo is a world renowned DJ, part of the band the Fun Lovin Criminals and performing for some of the most exclusive Hollywood parties including the Oscars Vanity Fair After Party, to spinning records on yachts off the coast of the south of france with some of the most prestigious artists in the world. Mateo’s life as he knew it came to a temporary halt 5 years ago in May of 2015. I had the grateful opportunity to sit down with Mateo in Brooklyn, just this past week where he graciously shared with me his mind-blowing story. Now, I apologize for the audio quality being a bit less than what I have previously given you all, but in Brooklyn you never know when the sirens are going to blare or the helicopters are going to fly overhead. I wanted to keep this as authentic as possible and unedited as Mateo shares his story less than 2 miles where the notorious BIG Biggie smalls grew up. Please keep your hearts and minds open and receptive as you are about to hear a personal and miraculous story from an absolute legend who continues to defy the odds.

As part 2 of the Affirmations Episode, John Denney and I go deep into though viruses talking about both positive and negative thought viruses. A thought virus is defined by the author's of the book "Explain Pain" asa thought which indicates extreme danger in you and can be expressed amongst your senses, things you say, and things you think and believe.Others have defined thought viruses as "subconscious patterns that become ingrained in our being.”
We take a positive thought virus and call it a thought vaccine to cure these negative thought viruses and teach you how to cue yourself to use these at critical moments in journey when going from injured to elite.
Head over to www.theharmonyexercise.com to learn a way of life made up of many thought vaccines!

For those that have already listened to the first episode thus far titled Episode #1 with John Denney of the Harmony Exercise.com you may have been slightly confused by the calling of this the Harmony Exercise Podcast. This idea evolved with my close colleague, and friend John Denny who enlightened my life with the Harmony Exercise, a daily guided meditation that can be found at www.theharmonyexercise.com. John and I continue to collaborate together and mastermind many of the podcast topics as he returns as a reoccurring guest on the show which can be heard after you subscribe!
My mission is to inspire those that are going through any type of challenge whether it be physical or not, to use it as an opportunity to better you and make a transformation, living a life with intentional higher purpose. As many of my clients tell me I am quite different than a lot of traditional Physical Therapists and take a very holistic approach through the mind, body, and spirit.

Today John and I are going to discuss warming up that attitude while warming up your body and letting your spirit do the real work.

Former Adelphi University Collegiate Baseball Player, Robert Vani joins the show in this episode and shares his amazing story of overcoming little leaguer's elbow at the tender age of 11 years old and continuing with his dream towards playing collegiate baseball. Rob represents Long Island Baseball (my old stomping grounds!) to the fullest graduating from one of the top catholic schools in the country, Chaminade high school in Mineola, NY. Not only was Rob a stellar high school baseball player but also a top student. Rob and I met through former St. Louis Cardinal's Minor League RHP Jonathan Mulford. Learn how his journey almost took him to playing collegiate baseball at Harvard University but after a tragedy continues on his journey to play in college. Now Rob goes down my footsteps into the world of Sports Performance and Physical Therapy as a Stony Brook Doctor of Physical Therapy Student at Stony Brook University in Long Island. He now looks to bring his baseball experience full circle into Professional Baseball through his new lens as a future Physical Therapist in the winter/spring of 2021.
For those professional teams out there please e-mail me at davemeyer@plperform.com if you are interested in having a PT student join your team in 2021.

Here we are back at my alma mater NYU, where I received my Doctorate in Physical Therapy, with Marawan Aboelwafa a current NYU student who looks to go down my footsteps into Sports Medicine and one day work for a professional sports team. I remember some long long days and nights here at this library. I didn't think I would be coming back to do a podcast interviewing an NYU student, rather I probably thought I would be working on a major baseball player’s shoulder, but here I am and couldn’t be more excited to share this absolutely inspiring story of an individual who grew up in a very notoriously rough neighborhood as a diamond in the rough. Marawan shares with us his keys to succeeding throughout his education, the inspiration behind wanting to become a PT as he sought out answers to his own hamstring injury, and also how we can all learn to be better mentors by continuing to strive for own development. I am honored to be a mentor for Marawan as he continues his educational journey and can't wait for everyone to hear his story to inspire us with our own goals through the face of the many challenges we all need to overcome.

Ryan and I worked together starting back in 2015 when he was with the St. Louis Cardinals organization and I was their Medical and Rehab Coordinator. **Hi everybody and welcome to episode # 4 where I am here back with performance coach John Denney. Today’s episode is titled “Recovery Starts in The Mind”. John and I both have interesting perspectives on recovery as it pertains to achieving peak levels of performance from both the physical side and the other parts of that triangle, the mind and spirit. Now, this can be after injury or even just when we are striving to improve our own performance throughout our journey. In today's episode, John and I both define recovery in our own unique perspectives. Recovery is a word that has garnered a ton of attention in the world of sports performance over the last decade, but what does it really mean? John brings the mind into the conversation, an area that does not get the most attention when we think about recovery. John then shares a very powerful tool, the reset breath. He goes over the proper steps to performing this strategy in order to improve your recovery, one of the first and most important step towards optimizing one’s recovery in the mind. We also discuss what heart rate variability is and how this relates to our recovery along with the heart math system. This system is a way for us to monitor and train our heart rate variability, almost like a mirror into our overall emotional state. In this short 23 minute episode, John and I wrap up episode #4 with the thought of aligning our mind and body, as often times in a state of distress, our mind gets in the way of our body. Remember, "Health Is Our Natural Condition". Enjoy episode # 4, "Where recovery starts in the mind" both after injury and even just in our normal daily lives as we deal with everyday stress.

Learn about me your host David Meyer, through my former patient Oleg Kagan (www.lifeinoleg.com). In this episode, my good friend and former patient interviews me with several insightful questions that he has for me that goes into some deep questions related to my overall treatment philosophies. Oleg is a recreational jiu jitsu martial artist who suffered multiple knee injuries and subsequent surgeries due to both a meniscus and ACL tear. The theme of this episode is not only the treatment philosophies of David Meyer being revealed through the eyes of a patient, but also about pain science. What is pain and what should we do about it? In this episode I talk about changing the story of the pain you might be experiencing and how I guide others through their rehabilitation to learn how to talk back to their pain. Enjoy episode # 3 and please let me know your thoughts on my Instagram at @davemmeyer
In episode #2 the renowned mental and spiritual performance guide, John Denney and I discuss how to find your deep visions and staying on target in 2020. It might be figuring out your vision for dinner, your short term 2020 goals, or even your entire purpose and vision in life. Instead of a superficial conversation about mind and body hacks, John cuts to the deepest part of how to figure this out with concise and specific steps. Identifying what you love and writing down your visions are just some of the very important points John and I discuss. As we get deeper into the background of the harmony exercise and his experiences prior to creating his guided meditation website www.theharmonyexercise.com, John makes the powerful analogy of how our body heals a cut just to how our body heals from specific emotions. John proposes calling these, inflammatory emotions. Just as the inflammatory process is a necessary step in the healing process of our body, so are these inflammatory emotions that we experience. John and I then discuss how to reprogram and re-establish our heart driven focus in life and filling ourselves with emotions and actions that can get us there. Forgiveness and other acts can be the pathway forward to heal through our emotional struggles when dealing with physical challenges.
Special shout out to CJ Beatty "The Baseball & Softball Motivator" @cjbeatty44 on IG and on the web at www.cjbeatty.eventbrite.com. CJ and I worked together at the St. Louis Cardinals and I mention him early on in this episode when I made an important phone call to CJ in order to help figure out my new visions. CJ's advice will ring with me forever after he stated "Dave you are not just a Physical Therapist, you are a Speaker! You need to put pen to paper and start figuring out exactly what it is that you want!" Thank you CJ and please support all of us by visiting us online and on social media! John Denney can be found at www.theharmonyexercise.com and on instagram @theharmonyexercise. Please find me on instagram @davemmeyer and hit me up with some feedback on the podcasts!
Hi everybody and welcome to my first episode of the Injured to Elite Podcast as your host David Meyer.
Let me start by sharing my 2020 mission with everyone. My mission is to empower each and every one of you at a time of physical challenges to create your best life possible both on and off the field and to change the culture of healthcare and sports medicine.
I just completed the first draft of my book Injured to Elite which will soon be coming to you! Are you facing a seemingly negative physical challenge that has set you back away from your goals in life? Well than this book and podcast are exactly for you!
Our first episode today features my dear friend and performance coach mentor, John Denney out of Jupiter, Florida. In this episode John and I discuss the history of his daily guided meditation which has changed his life and now mine. After being challenged to record a facebook live every day for a year of this guided meditation practice it has eventually culminated into theharmonyexercise.com which has a membership that is growing exponentially!
What better way to kick off the podcast than with the one strategy I use to start every morning to get my mind, body, and spirit in sync! This is such an important concept that I devoted a major section and chapter to this guided meditation in my book Injured to Elite. This year I have not missed a day and I already have seen the great results in all areas of my life.
After listening, go to www.theharmonyexercise.com for your free trial and don’t go another day without starting your day the harmony way.
So without further adue, I am very excited to share with you episode number 1 with John Denney.
Enjoy!
