In order to make new habits sometimes, or maybe most times, you may need to break some old ones to make some new ones. Either way, this podcast sheds some light, and offers some insights from the New York Times best selling author, Gretchen Rubin and her book Better Than Before.
What can I do to bring about the changes I may be seeking in my life, from myself, in order to see fruition of my hoped for ideals?
Asking myself,
”What am I in the habit of?”. The bread crumb trail starts there.
When I was little, as soon as the gifts were unwrapped I got right on the phone to call my cousins and tell them what I got and hear about their new gifts. It was almost as exciting as my first openings, being able to share about what had been gifted to me. It was a joy then, and it was a joy on this episode. My call to my cousins expanded to a group of podcast listeners- same dif.
My long awaited recurring series, A Good Chew With The Nephew, where I share a meal with my nephew Jack as we chew on all sorts of things.
The season is upon us. Knock knock, it’s at the door. I couldn't miss out on our annual Talk Turkey, but how about some tips to help make all our tasks happen with a bit more ease?
With a wave of emotion, without notable exception, everything I have put my hands on this week has been an exercise of gratitude. But to be honest, I was’t sure what was actually happening at first! November is one powerful season in time for me. Still.
I have fallen and I won’t get up. Years and years ago, I fell hard for fall. And beyond turning leaves and dropping temperatures, there is more to my fall infatuation. It is in full force in the month of November, and another N word is at the heart of it all- nostalgia. “a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.”

Our mental health needs tending to. Collectively, we have statistics that say so. As one who has been debilitated by anxiety at a particular time in my life, I know the need first hand. Sometime I hear it still, anxiety that is- knock knock knocking at my door- sometime, even ringing my bell.
How do I better answer the door?
Lets talk about it.
After four-thousand miles of on the road again, one might tear her car apart for those ruby red slippers and get to clickin’.
We are still on the road. Well, technically, we have settled for a few, in a beautiful setting. Everywhere I turn, I see pines. My whole person responds to the sight and smell of pine trees. That’s the truth!! “Take note!”, I say to myself! What does this meen, in the big picture? If I am true to what I love, what will that mean? Hmm. We shall see!
We are road trip people. People and canine. Jonathan, Dixie Daisy and I have roadtripped many, many miles. And we are back at it again. The first leg of our trip proved to be memorable, no doubt. Route 66 and Motel 6, if that says anything. A trip of which Alfred Hitchcock would have raised a curious brow of approval.
When I received a message from Karen, the wife of my longtime friend Brian Argo, asking for prayer for him, it was the start of a story in their lives and thousands of others. A story of Hope.
First of all, could you have cooler name? Vincent Van Vleet. His name grabs you from the start, and then, just consider yourself "done been grabbed". He is as charming as he is handsome, and charming fights for it's place at the top of the list with smart, capable, driven, humble and kind. to name a few contenders. I love his story. And I love Vince.

My friend Jeff and I focus on five favorite takeaways from the book we have been working our way through, The Daily Guide To A Joy-filled Life. I am still reading through this edition, but the truths and principles identified in this author's first book on the subject, The 4:8 Principle, carry through in this book, but just in a daily dose for easily absorbed consumption. This is last time together for a while, sharing our journey through this book. Though I expect I will be sharing in detail the many ways it has initiated real change in my life.
All of our experiences, all of our relationships, and definitely all of our thoughts, go into crafting an unconscious self identity. Rarely is it not a limiting version of who we truly are and our true capacity for living our best and fullest and richest joy-filled life. Listen in on these insights for opening the windows of this unconscious self, and the self worth that accompanies.
We have been on a journey going through a wonderful book called The Daily Guide To a Joy-filled Life. I won't share all the ways that my life is changing because of the principles shared in this book, because I am still seeing the effects and that reality changes daily. I don't know how anyone could read this book and not be changed by the understanding of these core life truths. I don't believe anyone could read it and put it down without these ideas making their way into ones conscious and or unconscious life.

So much so, that when editing time came, the first portion of the interview was nowhere to be found. But this full and rich woman leaves us only wanting more of her. Her insights are rich, her honesty is pure, and her heart is tender and open for us to take a lingering peak.
Following a Eunice presentation to a gathering of 400, 7th and 8th grade students, I have to admit, this my be my purposed sweet spot.
A group of 60 students on average, gathered together weekly in their hight school years. They gathered to rehearse, to sing to act to dance. This performance group called First In Line had motivations to commit to this process, as touring and performing was the end game. But, I think there was more of a call for them to gather faithfully each week. I have a strong hunch, that they faithfully gathered to be present with others, in a safe place, where their brand of person was welcomed with open arms. They gathered, to be.
Following the recent death of one of own First In Line members of years gone by, a prompt to reunite collectively, in full reunion fashion, to reconnect and honor our sweet friend Pam, and all of our relationships with her. Life is not a promise keeper. No promises we will have tomorrow let alone a year or ten from now. This weekend was our way to say I love you to each other. To hug. To laugh. To cry. To share from our hearts.
We honored our friendships, and celebrated that we will see Pam again. We rested in knowing that we are all friends, forever.
"For friends are friends forever, when the Lord's the Lord of them. And a friend will not say never, 'cause the welcome will not end. Though it's hard to let you go, in the Father's hand we know, that a lifetime's not too long, to live as friends"

The only thing one can control, is making the choice to really live. No matter our circumstances, we have the authority and power to choose to dig in deep and live. My guest and aunt, Coni Berliner has left some footprints in the sand for us to follow. We all probably get this song stuck in our heads during the Christmas season, "It's the most wonderful time the year!" With kids jingle belling and everyone telling to "be of good cheer", the halls may be the least of things that get decked. The truth may just be, we are feeling anything but cheerful. This season is a season of peace and joy and hope, but there is so much that comes with this season that contributes to the greater divide within, that this most wonderful time of year can truly be blue for so many. I'll have a blue Christmas may be more like it.
I sat down with someone who understands that reality, and honors the space and place for those that need it held by someone. You don't have to feel you're alone in this one. It's real and true. True blue.

The Day after tomorrow we will celebrate Thanksgiving 2021. In great part that was the prompt for this series we are in, titled, A Series Of Thankfulness; Family & Friends, Creative & Courageous. In a nutshell, some of the big things I have been lending my braincells to think on are my friendships, my family, the creative, and the courageous. There is one person prominent in my mind and on my heart that embodies all four of these. It's my niece Camryn. A beauty through and through, if there ever was a time to give her a platform, its this month, this year, and this Tuesday with Terey. Or Bobo as she would say.
She is a special one, oh so very very special to me. My friend, My family, creative and courageous. Thats Camryn. My Camy-Apple.
"Perhaps I may yet die with my boots on." Wild Bill Hickock said that. I didn't know him personally, but my guess is that he meant something kinda like, if he were blessed enough in life he would leave this earthly place someday, doing what he loved to do, living the way he loved to live. It just might be a charge for us all. Grab those boots, y'all.
My guests on this episode are brothers and I do know them. I knew them in HIghschool, and only well enough to know that they were good guys. And good guys they were and good men they are. Thanks to social media, we have connected again, and I have been welcomed by their warmth into their fold.

The month of November is one of my favorite months. I start feeling like I have come into my own once October arrives, and by November I really settle in as the fall of fall feels like a comfy pair of jeans and a sloppy cable knit sweater with flip flops. But November is also one of my favorite months because of our Thanksgiving holiday, and the narrowing focus it brings me around to, a nudge to look closer at all and for all I am thankful for. This month I have a series that has formed in and around this thankfulness that will unfold each Tuesday this month.
I am thankful for so much, but in particular, this year I feel extra love and gratitude for my friends, family, creativity and courage. This very podcast came to be because of all of those things, friends, family, creativity and courage. I would be remiss if I didn't throw some attention and love the way of my friend Brian Cole and our episode together.
Brian was my first guest and is as close as it gets to family without the blood factor. As far as friends go, he is long suffering and a friend through and through. His creativity sharpens mine, and with Brian cheering me on as he does, courage roars within me like a lion. Cowardly on my own most of the time, but still.

In the wake of the loss of my friend Nikki, I have been stirring over a comment and a charge she put forth in a video that was made before she died. She commented that she was showing up for herself. I got the phrase, but what on earth did it mean? She added to that, a charge for all who viewed this video, and that was to be intentional with our lives. Being intentional and showing up for oneself have to be blood relatives. This episode is all about what Nikki unearthed in me, and it's just the start of the conversations we will likely have, here on the podcast.

Tim Tackett was my High School drama teacher. He was smarter than smart. He still is. I don't think I realized until I had worked professionally in theatre, the gold mine I had in his instruction and direction as a 14 year old, young budding actress. The dude knows what he's talking about.
And all while he is managing a rather talented group of high school aged theatre students, he was being invited to instruct in material arts circles all around the world. A house hold name of sorts in and beyond the martial arts circles, Tackett knew his stuff and still does.
He is one fascinating person, and I still feel honored that I hung with him for four years of my formative life. I am grateful beyond measure.

Not too far back, in a previous episode I spent time with one amazingly inspirational person. Nicole Brown, Nikki, Megans mom, Wonder Woman, you pick one, she knows her true name. She is the daughter of God. This past Wednesday, Nikki traded her just under two year painful match with Ovarian Cancer, for the eternity with God she new was waiting for her.

Seriously folks. Sometimes I can't believe I know the amazing people I know. I pinch myself a lot, especially when featuring them on my podcast. It's always a "really???" kind of moment for me. Laurie Frey brings one of those moments for me. A Producer and manager in the entertainment industry, pretty much could run the country and have some free time left on her hands. She is a rock star in more ways than I can count. Without even knowing the depths of her story, her persona screams UNBEATABLE. She is one of the most capable people I have ever met. One of the most even -keeled people I have ever known. And then. And then. And then, and then, and then, and then. There is so much to her. I have known Laurie for approximately twenty years, and since our meeting our relationship has evolved and covered some pretty amazing ground. And still, today, while visiting with her on this episode, I learn more and more.

Bob Hupp and I met when I auditioned for him for the role Madame Thenardier of the musical Les Miserables. He is one fine director, one fine specimen of person, and every bit as fine a friend. Oh and of course, I must mention he comes with a great sense of most things. His quick and dry, slightly self deprecating sense of humor is the best medicine for any scenario, and he knows how to administer the perfect dose.
I have but one bucket list, dying wish, oh-don't-make-me-beg check of the box before I check outta here, and that is to work with him again. There's my dramatic and very truthful declaration for the day.

And My introduction came in the form of a wonderful human being by the name of Wendy Pauker. Wendy and I were instant friends. There was no other option than to love her immediately. And how fitting, that this amazing human being would spend her professional days living our her humanity in amazing ways as A Child Life Specialist. Another doer. Another golden example of dreams in action. I am getting super good at spotting these types. They are bold. They are strong. They aren' necessarily fearless, but they don't let fear get comfortable around them. They may or may not have vision, bt they always have a desire, and desire has antsy feet. It was to go and do and be. And these doers see to that it happens. This episode focuses on Amy. She's usually the one bringing things into focus. This young entrepreneur took her art and craft and built a beautiful business capturing photos of your family. She is a doer. And oh how I do love her.

February 7th, 1987, my family lost it's corner stone. My father, Doug Summers passed away at the far too young age of 47. We just crossed over the 34 year mark of his passing. So, I thought it would be fitting to rewind to the episode with my brother Mark. Mark looks so much like my dad. Laughs like my dad. Works hard like my dad. Sometimes, feels like my dad with his presence. Here's to 34 years without this man in our lives, and many more years with this other man in mine. Mark, you're the man.

I feel super cool that I am friends with Tom Eggum. The over see-er of Hope4KidsInternational.org is just one bad dude in the way of doing good. This is true case of good and bad. One bad dude doing good for decades, means literally millions of lives have been changed if not saved! As vital as clean water is to the human being, Tom's quest to share his hope for kids is equally life giving. Sit down with us as Tom shares his story that began to colorfully unfold in his teenage years. He captivates and inspires. He is one of a kind. I love him, and I love the far reaching work that he continues to do on behalf of our small neighbors more far than near.
This episode as its turned out, was not the one I planned to have, originally. But when lovely unexpected surprises happen, you make room for them. My cousin Hugh came into the town and surprised us. He treated us, me, to dinner. Not just any dinner, mind you. This very well may have been the meal of my lifetime. So, in this episode I share about my life with my cousin Hugh, and then review as best as I could through my own drool, recounting this meal I speak of with verve. Just listen in yourself. You'll see what I mean.
Ron May makes me a tad nervous. Why? He makes me nervous because he is so good at what he does. It's likely awe and respect fueling my moderately managed pockets of fearfulness, that results in nervousness. I digress. Because I'm nervous. I can talk a lot when I'm nervous.
But, actually, Ron is so stinkin' interesting I was sort of naturally (or unnaturally, considering) a bit more lean on words. I was so emotional throughout. I think I was rooting for him as I was discovering he was well beyond my cheers. It took me the interview to catch up. He is just someone I could sit and listen to and ask questions of, for hours and hours on end. I am praying that I won't stalk him now. "Accidentally" bumping into him at his favorite lunch spots, as I happen to have an empty chair at my table... that I've been sitting and waiting at since they opened at 11:00... eyes fixed on the door so I don't miss him. Yeah, hope I don't do that. Oh hoho I would so love to. I just hope for him I don't. But, don't be surprised, Ron. Just sayin'.

What motivates a dairy farmer to become a politician? In her case, the motivation to move to politics had everything to do with the life she had led to that point. It was a love for agriculture. I enjoy having my picture taken. My first professional headshot session with a photographer in Hollywood was when I was 4 years old. When I connect with a photographer, I CONNECT WITH A PHOTOGRAPHER. You don't swap out chemistry when you find it.

In a follow up to Epsiode 5, Terey introduces her listeners to the director who redirected her life. From an audition, on a whim, Terey was cast in a procuduction of A Christmas Carol, by the Prodcuing Artisitic Director of The Cookie Company at Phoenix Theatre. Alan Prewitt became a mainstay in Terey's life following that destined day on her way back to California. Unbeknownst to her, it was the day Terey moved to Arizona. This talented man, and now dear friend, Alan Prewitt, holds a beautiful place in her life for clearly significant reasons, most of which you will gather as you enjoy getting to know him in this episode.
When it's 107 degrees, I will admit, I ask myself how did I get here. Meaning, Arizona. What was the lure? What was the bait? I thought it was a beautiful state, so it's not like it does't warrent a relocation. Many, many Californians do it, and have for years. Though I had never had the slightest yearning to move to this desert land, I did. Inadvertently. It was a gig and a character, and a long running show, that essentially moved me to Arizona. It was one of the best seasons in my life. And like the slushy that I'm slurping to refresh me, as we are breaking temperature record heat, recalling what "moved" me to Arizona sure helps me refresh, as the sweat rolls down the back of my legs.
We can't choose our family members. They happen without our having much say in the matter. But could we put in an order, and pick and choose who, let's say, our brother could be, like a custom order at In n Out for our double-double's, I got my perfect order. My brother is my friend and always has been. He is one of my very favorite people on the planet. Ted Barrett has been a MLB Umpire for more than two decades. He's used to paying close attention, there behind the bases, watching and not talking. And he's great at what he does. But when I sat down to take a swing at an interview with Ted, as you will soon learn, he is great behind the microphone.
