Veterans Corner Radio focuses on what those who have served in the military, and their families need to know to maximize the services and benefits due to them. No matter if you are currently serving or got out 50 years ago, this program will give you answers to questions you didn’t even know you should be asking. Among those who have been and will be sharing their knowledge are those from the Department of Defense (DOD), Veterans Health Administration, Veterans Benefits Administration, National Cemetery Administration, members of Congress (both House and Senate), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), American Legion, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), Military Order of World Wars (MOWW), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Vietnam Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), just to name a few.You will learn, among many other things, how to use the VA claim process, the services offered by the James A Haley VA Hospital that your local VA hospital may also offer and how to make use of them, and how to access educational benefits and home loans. What you have just read is the tip of the iceberg; there is so much more captured in the shows already posted and those yet to come. CPO Taylor discusses his service on submarines and provides us insight on how that impacted his family as well as his life onboard. While onboard, Jim served as the additional duty Chaplain. This turned into his quest throughout the continuation of his life. Today he holds a doctorate degree in Ministry, is a published author, and ministers to veterans.

Airman Dunn served our country from December 1988 through 1995. Born in The Philippines, as a baby she moved with her family to New York. You’ll discover her life as it blossomed to include exposure to a multitude of cultures and academics. Born in Miami and a graduate of the University of Florida, Captain Alvarez earned his commission in 1997. Following his time in the Army, Danny went to law school and as a lawyer became the legal representative to the Tampa Police union. Since then, he has gotten into politics and now serves in the State of Florida House of Representatives.

Major Greer served as an aircraft maintenance officer in California, Korea and Italy before transitioning from active duty to the reserves in Georgia. Throughout his life, Bill served as a musician especially playing the piano and organ.

Today you’ll get to know a bit more about Commander Paul Renner. We'll learn about his time growing up as an avid player of baseball and soccer, his time in college, followed by his entry into the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer. Paul served onboard ship during Desert Storm and returned on July 3rd, in time to celebrate Independence Day with family and friends. Continuing his service as a reserve officer, he attended law school and became an attorney in private practice while also deploying to South America and Afghanistan. Now as a retired Naval officer, Paul serves as Speaker of the House for the State of Florida Legislature. Currently he is a candidate running to become Governor of Florida.

Lt. Col Worley spent 27 years in the Air Force, which began in 1975 and included eight years as an enlisted FAA-certified Air Traffic Controller. After attending Officer Training School in 1983, he served as a rated Air Battle Manager. Upon his military retirement, Lt Col Worley then spent over fourteen years instructing the Air Force Junior ROTC program at Crescenta Valley High School in La Crescenta, California before retiring in 2017.

Sergeant Whitmore enlisted in the Army in 1977 and retired in 2013. She began as a member of what was known as the "Women's Army Corps," where she served as a Teletype Technician. When the Corps disbanded in 1978, Carol transitioned to become an Army Nurse serving in many austere locations overseas, including Iraq, and held various assignments around the United States. Since retirement she became a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars where today she serves as the VFW’s National Commander-in-Chief.

National Football League and Pittsburgh Steelers legend Robert "Rocky" Bleier was drafted into our United States Army where he served as an Infantryman in the Vietnam War. He was wounded in action, becoming a recipient of the Bronze Star with Valor device and a Purple Heart. Following his two years of service he returned to professional football to participate in the winning of four Super Bowls.

For this episode we meet former United States Marine Corps Captain and Judge Advocate Ross Goodman. On his way to become a professional tennis player, an injury cut his tennis career short. College friends who were in the process of becoming Marines took him into their fold. Four days after college graduation he found himself in Marine Corps Officer Candidate School where he graduated and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Then he was off to Law School.

Michael's story begins with his birth in 1935 in Yugoslavia in what is today Serbia. His town was occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II. Following the war, Russian soldiers rounded up his family and other families in his town and placed them in starvation camps. Del Connell served during World War II as a Supply Clerk. His ship was among those who picked up survivors of the Bataan Death March. Del, who is now aged 101 and a half, recounts his story of receiving walking human skeletons on board and how he and the rest of his shipmates gave up their rations and berths to restore nutrition and comfort to these rescued Prisoners of War.

In today's program we meet former United States Air Force Master Sergeant Bill Parsons. A kid of the 1950s and 1960s, Bill grew up in small town, rural Kentucky. In his senior year of high school he enlisted in the Air Force under the Delayed Enlistment Program. Once in the Air Force he became a Transportation Vehicle Operator then cross-trained into what is now called the Occupational Safety Career Field. Dynamics and experiences had Bill take off from the Air Force, move along to OSHA Headquarters in Washington DC, and had him touch down once more with the Air Force as the lead for their Occupational Safety Program.

| Today we Vet-roduce a project in development called "Letters from the Front" in which lines from letters sent home by military members at war to their loved ones are transformed into lyrics set to contemporary classical compositions. We meet "Letters from the Front" Executive Producer Ian Gindes who is also a Major in the Illinois Army National Guard and Composer Patrick Zimmerli. Their team is comprised of musicians from around the globe and letters they derive lyrics from go back as early as the United States' Revolutionary War through to current United States' conflicts. This project honors America's 250th birthday coming up in 2026 and years to come.

Corporal Demenza grew up in Tampa, Florida. He enlisted in the US Army and went through training to be in the Infantry. A unique pre-service course on drafting however, changed how he would serve. As a result, he found himself in Japan as the war came to a close and became part of the effort to redistribute assets deployed on behalf of the US military to Japan. Offered the opportunity to obtain a commission and turn in his Corporal stripes to become an officer, Harry chose a path he long desired from his days growing up.

In celebration of our nation's 249th birthday, we continue this series of Veterviews with another World War II vet, U.S. Army Captain Lloyd Grable. Captain Grable grew up in San Francisco, California. When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the US Army and was selected early for a commission as an officer. As the war came to a close following the dropping of nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, Lloyd was part of the US Military nation rebuilding effort. Jenna Shields, National Oncology Program Pharmacy Manager announced another new service that will make the VA more user-friendly and add to the ease of receiving treatments was announced this week. The VA has opened a program called Close To Me. This program will provide infusion services at many new facilities bringing them closer to the patient. Brad Hibbard Program Manager for America’s VetDogs presents and interesting story of not only assisting Veterans with Service Dogs but also providing Combat Stress Control Dogs to active duty units, many of whom have been raised by prison inmates, who have benefited from the puppy-raising process. On Jan. 29, 2006, while reporting on U.S. and Iraqi security forces for ABC’s “World News Tonight,” Bob Woodruff was seriously injured by a roadside bomb that struck his vehicle near Taji, Iraq. Ben Peterson is an Afghanistan War veteran who was taken by the reception he received when he came home from his tour of duty. He was welcomed by bands playing, flags flying high, and cheering crowds. This is in stark contrast to the pictures he had seen when the Vietnam veterans came home. He also noticed that the Vietnam vets, even after being treated so badly, committed themselves to serve their fellow veterans. Armed with a sizeable list of sponsors, he and his organization are diligently working to ensure a proper welcome home for these maligned warriors. Assistant Director Terry Rouch of the Policy and Procedures Branch of the VA Home Loan Guaranty Section, explains current VA home loan opportunities and debunks a number of myths concerning the agency. He points out that the VA has an extensive program not only for new homes but also for refinancing. In FY 2021 over 1.44 million loans were covered, 204,000 foreclosures were prevented and 2,300 special adaptive housing grants were approved. Dr. Cynthia Grant, VA Deputy Director of Patient-Centered Care and Cultural Transformation has spent a lifetime helping our troops put their lives back together. In 2018 she was the Commanding officer of the combat trauma hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan. In her new role with the VA, she is dedicated to helping our vets get and keep their lives on track. Under Secretary Quinn is the top person in the National Cemeteries Administration and he shared the importance of preregistration in order to even things out at the time of death. He spoke on many issues important to veterans and their families but the Veterans Legacy Program was dear to his hart, The VA now has a program where friend and relatives, at no charge, can leave pictures and messages to the family. All in all he was an inspiring speaker.
David K Dunning is the new director of what will be one of the Top Ten VA hospitals in the country when the new medical tower comes online in early 2022. It will be one of my goals during 2022 to interview as many of the top VA Hospital Directors as I can to get their combined take on what is important to veterans' care.

The Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) is one of the oldest associations of Military Officers and one that is not as well known as some of the others. In talking with Commander Okin it became abundantly clear why that is, much of their efforts are directed to service to the youth of this country and low key from a publicity standpoint but very valuable to those they serve. Many times, it is the efforts of one or two Companions, as they refer to their members. Toni and Craig Gross are remarkable people and hearing about their losing their son Frank in Afghanistan brought tears to my eyes, However, how they have handled one of the greatest losses a parent can have is a story so heartwarming that it has to be told. Tune in to hear how they have committed their lives to help vets much like their son, who did return home but needed help on their return.

Dr. Scott Shreve, Veterans Administration National Director of Palliative and Hospice Care provides solid and pertinent information to those who may need Palliative and/or Hospice Care. Important to note is that if you perhaps have not qualified for VA care in the past, at the end of life many things change, and you may be eligible to enroll. Veterans should call enrollment, tell them of your end-of-life diagnosis and let them work with you to enroll. Once you are enrolled, that will most likely open a lot of benefits and help for your spouse. Listen in to hear this information and so much more.
Jane Che, Director VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities Program Office Compensation Service sheds some light on the VA rating process and discusses the new presumptive conditions for claims. Director Che is emphatic about our veterans taking advantage of the claims process and emphasizes that when you file you do not take away from any other veterans. She also speaks to the effort her office and the VA, in general, are making to speed up the process. Keep in mind that even if your veteran has gone from us, there may still be a reason to file.
|A prosthetic device is any device that helps replace, correct, or support a body part or the function of a body part. In the VA that definition gets stretched a bit to cover so much more. It can be, according to Asst. Chief Walker, the proper socks for a diabetic patient all the way up to the retrofitting of a car to provide a vet with mobility. Listen in and you will learn, just as I did, the multitude of services that the VA provides.
Because so many people have failed to get their Covid shots the disease is spreading. Even if you have taken the shots you may still be vulnerable to the disease, although your case will generally not be life-threatening, more like a slight case of the flu. But you may still want to seek medical treatment. Here is what you need to know if you go to a local Urgent Care and seek treatment so that you may not have to pay for any or all of it.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is not new (PTSD) According to Dr. Norman references can be found to it well before the First World War where we called it Shell Shock. Each war has had a different name for this condition but finally we are understanding its causes and improving on available treatments. In fact Dr. Norman makes a strong point that Vietnam veteran who received treatment in the1980 to no avail should give the VA another chance at if not curing the problem, mitigating the symptoms. An area of importance that we touched on was the symptoms of PTSD that might be indicators spouses and loved ones should encourage their vet to get help. The Director of the James A Haley Veterans Hospital has been a frequent guest on Veterans Corner Radio since its inception over four years ago. Joe's transparent management style has allowed for almost all of the top managers at that facility to come on Veterans Corner Radio and share information with our listeners. But beyond that transparency, Joe has established a culture of competency at the hospital that most of us have never seen before. Jennifer (Jenny) Moser, Associate Director Scientific Programs, and Jennifer (Jenn) Deen, Associate Director Public Relations for the Million Veterans Program share information on this program that will change the way medicine is practiced. The Million Veteran program at the VA is one of the largest genetics research programs in the world with nearly 840,000 veterans participating. The goal is for Veterans to someday walk into a doctor’s office and receive health care designed just for them. Through genetic research, discoveries about the biological basis of disease and illness can help researchers better understand how they work and potentially lead to new ways of identifying risk, treating diseases, and ultimately, prevention. Bill has been a participant in the program for about the last five years and the printed materials that he has received from the Million Veteran Program have been very interesting, to say the least.
Rebecca Keough is responsible for the White House VA Hotline. This is the office that you contact when you have exhausted all other avenues of help. Many times they can cut the Gordian knot of bureaucracy and get you to the right person or office that can solve your problem. While it is always good practice to try and resolve your problem at the lowest level possible, when a wall is hit, this is the place to call. They will take your information, create a case file and stay with you until there is some form of resolution of your problem. This program is full of useful information. Give them a call at the number they share during the interview.

Sixty thousand claims are under mandatory review due to a court order and the passing of the Blue Water Navy bill by congress. Rashmi talks with Bill Hodges about the way that review will be handled and how those who have not filed, or even the spouse/family, can file claims for Agent Orange exposure on naval ships. For some, it can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars in back pay on claims previously denied that might now be approved. Bill tells you often on this show not to count yourself out. If you think you might have benefits coming to you, file for them. Even if your claim is denied, as was the case with these 60,000 claims, circumstances change, and claims can be reactivated. As a matter of full disclosure, for the past five years, the doctors have been advising me to have the surgery. This past spring I finally agreed and now for the first time in forty years, I am not wearing glasses. My results may not be typical, but honestly had I known what is in this broadcast earlier, I would not have waited.
Director Joe Battle returns to the James A Haley Veterans Hospital after spending the last 8 months on temporary assignment directing Region 7 of the VAH. Joe has 38 years with the VA and is recognized as an expert on the VA. During our interview, he gives us a better perspective on the parts of the VA and how they serve the veteran community.
Just in. Sadly Director Battle has decided to end his career with the VA and enjoy his well-earned retirement. His last day will be July 31. His caring for veterans and their families has established a veteran-first culture at the James A Haley Veterans hospital that did not exist in much of the past.

The Center for Development and Civic Engagement is responsible for finding and training prospective volunteers along with working with civic organizations and others who wish to donate to the VA. They have a lesser-known program that provides service dogs to military veterans and they do it at no charge to the veteran. Many of us who have served have had our hearing take a beating. As we grow older, however, the problem continues to get worse. VA patients have a great advantage over those in the civilian world in that the VA has no profit motive and only deals in the best of equipment. On March 31, 2020, we started this program as a way to get information out to our veterans and their families during what looked like and turned out to be a very dark time. The pandemic isolated a lot of people and this program strived to help them connect and stay current on the benefits they were earned and were entitled to. The U.S. Army has agreed to reconsider the cases of thousands of veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars era with mental health conditions who received other-than-honorable discharges. The decision is part of a settlement agreement in a class-action lawsuit brought by two Connecticut veterans. Scott Hope, Deputy Director of Legislative Services for Disabled American Veterans will discuss the ramifications of this court decision and how the DAV is and will be prepared to assist the personnel receiving revised discharges file claims where appropriate.
Julie Borgen, Social Work Service Section Chief, Caregiver Support Program Manager Bay Pines VA Healthcare System has a lot of experience in helping Caregivers. Listen in to hear more. The VA Healthcare system has a variety of resources for Veterans and Caregivers that may vary from facility to facility. There are two programs that are at every VA. One is the Program of General Caregiver Support Service provides resources, education and support to caregivers of Veterans. The Veteran does not need to have a service-connected condition, for which the caregiver is needed, and may have served during any era. No formal application is required. The other is the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers for eligible Veterans who have incurred or aggravated a serious injury in the line of duty. Veterans Florida is an initiative started by the State of Florida to tap into the huge gold mine of trained workers, emanating from the various military bases here in the state and also to draw qualified individuals from other military bases to Florida. There is no charge for any of their services and even if you want to work for someone, be an entrepreneur, or even be a farmer, there is something there for everyone leaving the military. My Warriors Place (MYP) is a wonderful respite center for Veterans and their families. It was founded by Gold Star Mother Kelly Kowall after her son was killed by enemy action. In recent years some of the VA Health Services money has been judiciously applied to defeating illness by helping VA patients to make healthy choices and now the program has been extended to the entire family. To ease financial difficulties during the pandemic, the VA Debt Management Center (DMC) suspended issuing debt notification letters and suspended collection action on debts established after April 3, 2020, through January 1, 2021. DMC also offered suspensions or extended repayment plans for debts established prior to April 3, 2020.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN 2021
If your debt was established after April 3, 2020, DMC will issue your debt notification letter(s) starting in January 2021. If you have debt that was established prior to April 3, where collections have been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, your suspension will end on January 1, 2021, and the DMC will resume withholding from your VA benefits to pay the debt effective with your February 1, 2021, benefit payment. If you do not receive VA benefits, your payment will be due to DMC by February 1, 2021.
VA has a variety of resources for you as a VA patient to help you in urgent care or emergency situations. You can call and talk with a nurse or make arrangements to go to an urgent care center that is privately operated but in the VA network. Listen in to get the phone number to call to talk with a VA nurse who may be able to help you without your going anywhere or assist you in knowing what to do so as not to run up a large bill for services that if handled properly will be paid by the VA. Be sure to have you spouse listen in with you on this one, If you are sick, he or she will need the info.
For this Veterans Corner Radio podcast, Bill dips back into our archives and shares with you a program we played on the air prior to the birth of the podcasts. His guest is the Honorable Judge Gregory P. Holder 13th Judicial Circuit Civil Division. Judge Holder will discuss the origins and current operations of the Hillsborough Veterans' Court. He also talks about this particular court is unique and how it is currently being looked at as a model for a Federal Veterans Court. One note we should make is that he references a federal act in progress designed to take courts like this all across the nation. That act has now been passed and signed into law thanks to people like judge Holder and others who saw the need.
The key to getting all veteran's benefits is to first procure a copy of your service record and it is on the DD214 form. There are a number of companies that are willing for a fee to get that form for you but there is literally no reason to pay the fee. You can get it yourself by completing the request form and either sending it in electronically or mailing it in. The short program will lead through the process in an easy to understand step by step procedure.
One of the nicest presents I have ever received is my brick in the Veterans Memorial walk. There are many reasons I am happy to be there, too many to list but most of all I just love walking along the path and seeing how many good men and women I am with. It can depend on years of service, where you served, how you served, when you were deployed, how much money you make as a family, and 100 other variables. John Rowan was re-elected to an eighth term as the National President of Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) at the organization’s 19th National Convention in Spokane, Washington. During this interview, he spoke of how, when our vets came back from Vietnam, there were no ticker-tape parades and even some of the mainline veterans' organizations turned their backs on the vets. Hence the start of VVA to serve the unique needs of the cast-aside warriors. We think that was a result of what these men faced coming home is the basis on which Americans have built greater respect for our current servicemen and women. Stephen “Butch” Whitehead National Commander of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) in this interview with Bill Hodges speaks to the value-added this organization is providing to those who served their country. For those not familiar with The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) it is one of the premier veterans organizations that has taken on the task of helping veterans work their way through filing disability claims for injuries suffered while in military service. He reminds us that there is no statute of limitations on when you file the claim and it can mean thousands of dollars in monthly payments along with guaranteed access to the VA hospital system. Clara Reynolds, CEO of the Crisis Line describes to you what you would get if you dialed 211 on the phone. What would you say if I told you that many crisis involving veterans and their families could be averted by this simple action, dial 211? Most people stare at me blankly when I ask that question. 211 is where you call if your life is in turmoil and you need help. 911 is for medical emergencies and 211 is for almost everything else. Anyone can call it and get free counseling, but if you are a vet when you call in, ask for a veteran to be your counselor. These folks are uniquely qualified to serve veterans and their families as they are trained to be able to open doors for you that you probably do not know exist. Whether you are a veteran or not, take a few minutes to listen to how they can help you.
**Sheriff Chronister is a trailblazer in the repair of lives corrupted by war. He is deeply committed to helping veterans who come into contact with the law return to being useful citizens. Listen while he shares information on the new veteran’s section of the jail and how it is centered on helping the vet, in conjunction with other agencies, to return to a productive life.
We should point out that Sheriff Chronisters' actions are not just something that the law enforcement arm is doing in a vacuum. He has worked with our Public Defender Julianne Holt and our Veterans Treatment Court Judge Michael Scionti to make it a seamless system of rehabilitation whenever possible. The proof of the value of this program is that in the end veterans moving through it have a recidivism rate of less than 10% and when you compare that to an overall recidivism rate in the state of Florida 36% you can see how well the program is working.

Dr. Howell works every day to stop suicides in our veteran population. I asked him to concentrate on the mental health effects of living with the Corona Virus not only on our vets but also on their families. Even with all of the resources being directed toward the pandemic, the psychiatric department at Haley has risen to meet the problem and you will find the ideas he presents very interesting and useful in this time of stress.
Kelly Kowall is a Gold Star mother and when she lost her son in combat, she took it upon herself to create a safe place for returning veterans and their families. Hear how she got started and how you can help with this mission. There are a lot of veterans help organizations but few like My Warriors Place. Not one person gets paid for working there; everyone is a volunteer and 96 to 98% of all donations go directly to help the vets. That is phenomenal. Listen in.

Dr. Cesar Ercole is a member of the James A Haley VA hospital staff and a surgeon specializing in Urology. In this program he discussed prostate problems, warning signs and treatment options. This highly trained and very capable physician will tell you a variety of things that you may never here talking with a physician in the for-profit medicine world.
Over the years I have interviewed some of the top specialists in the field of prostate cancer and each leaned toward treating it with their discipline. Surgeons thought surgery was the best option, Radiologist of course leaned toward radiation. However, at the VA they have an array of treatments available without the profit motive to push one over the other. So, if you have prostate problems which is best for you? Listening to this broadcast will leave you better educated to make a treatment choice and it may be no treatment at all. That’s called watchful waiting and is indeed a good option for many older patients.

Using a Bureau of Justice Statistic study finding inmates released from state prisons have a five-year recidivism rate of 76.6%, In our Veterans Treatment Court, it is 10% or less. this is just one of the statistics which shows this court works, Not only saving taxpayers money but helping to recover valuable lives that would otherwise be lost.
