Day In The Life Of A Pratt Student: Recent Episodes

Hey! My name is Samuel and this podcast will be reflections at the end of each day about what I do as a junior photography major at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.
Today was a decent day. I missed the mark on turning in my paper for Art Since the 60s. I woke up early, 5 AM, to start it, but did not utilize the time well and will now be turning in the paper late. Tomorrow morning, Thursday, I will be doing the same thing for my contemporary issues paper and presentation.
Today started early and resulted in me being productive in the early hours of the day. I had a fantastic critique in Junior Research. Later I decided it would be best to go tobed early and get up early to write my paper for Art History in the morning instead of the dead of night.
Today in Contemporary Issues we visted three galleries in Dumbo. In Psychoanalysis we talked about Mary Ainsworth Strange Situations Test.
Today I was sick all day. What started as a sore throat turned into chills by the end of the night.
Aside from that today I had Art Since the 60s, a Photo lecture by Lucy Gallun, and the work as a Lab Monitor.
Today I had a great time in Junior Research then took pictures at the School of Art lecture with Lisa Luskavage.
Great first day back at Pratt. Productive day at work and interesting class as always in PIC. I was sleep deprived by the end of the day and was feeling grumpy, but tried to maintain composure.
I recorded this just after waking up Sunday morning, then started the day with my family, getting brunch in Houston, running a couple of errands, then heading to the airport back to New York.
Last posting for a week or so, going to Texas and Oklahoma for Thanksgiving, so won't have a computer or phone to post from. I will be recording and everything will be posted starting the Monday after Thanksgiving when I'll be back in the city.

Today I went with someone to the Met to assist them with their photo shoot. Later I had my radio show at WPIR.
Today in Digital Monochrome we reviewed our custom QTR and Piezo curves. I mainly talk about my own struggles with photography in this episode.
Not the best day for me here at Pratt, also not the worst.
Later in the evening there was the Shannon Ebner and Leslie Hewitt talk which I went to. I ran into my former teacher Anne Turyn who talked to me about my work I showed in the crit the other day. The talk with her was helpful and I wish I had recorded her speaking because I value so much of what she has to say. Basically, she was surprised to see what I was doing and doesn't want to see me go in the loop she sees happen every year where students think they are doing something different. She wants to see more content-based work. I also want to produce content based work but have just had trouble committing to a project or vision.
Someone else in my year had an awesome critique because she is shooting based on the idea of boundaries and her images were so consistent and exact. It was inspiring to see. Am I currently in a photographic crisis? Or am I just over thinking...
Today was the second and final round of the huge Junior Research Crit we did here in the photo department. I attached two recordings to the end of the episode of critiques that happened in the conglomerate class today.
Overall today's session went better than last week's session, everyone left today on a positive note.

Twas a great day to be a junior in photography at Pratt Institute.
Today started off in a rut. I felt unmotivated to do anything, 9-5 pm just sort of happened, but after leaving PIC at 8, the pace really picked up and I was much more productive. That is continuing into Tuesday because there is just so much to do.
Today I went to Far Rockaway Beach for a homework assignment. It was pleasing to go, I might go back. Later I had my show on WPIR in which I played recordings from my recorder instead of music.
Today my Digital Monochrome class traveled to New Jersey to meet Lucy Helton. She talked to us about her process and how she works through different bodies of work, which was really helpful to hear as a student because many times we have no idea what we're doing or where to go, then we hear someone like Lucy say the same thing which makes our anxieties feel normal.
Today the contemporary issues class met at the New York Public Library to look at lensless photography. There were Blue Prints by Anna Atkins and Contemporary Works inspired by Anna Atkins.
Today was decent. Could've been more productive. I do love how engaging and interactive PIC is with always having to talk about what we bring in and how it relates to class. Today we made a gallery filled with a work we considered a failure.
Today all four Junior Research classes combined for one massive critique that went through half of the Junior Class work. Next week we will do the same.
I found it a bit overwhelming to talk during people's critiques because it turned into people debating over people's work which I found annoying. I did speak to some classmates afterward and they said they were not a fan of the critique as a whole because it wasn't that helpful hearing things from new people. I think the issue is that most people do not know how to properly critique. Everyone says what they want to see in the work and offer suggestions which are hardly helpful at all to the person who made the work. Rarely do people just read the work. There were times during this 2:00 to 6:20 PM block where I found myself wondering if this was a waste of time.
In the last part of this episode, I recorded a full 12-minute critique so that you can understand what these sound like and how they go.
Today was not wasted. It was mostly a day about photography, as all days should be. I was shooting this morning for the prattler, edited during my shift, and then after my shift edited some more for a job I did this summer for my friend Aaron. I did some PIC work, and even that was involving photography. I was going through old prints, now I need to write about them. I also need to write a short paper proposal for Tori. I also need to write a schedule for tomorrow so that my reason to get out of bed is more purposeful. Thanks for reading, listening. See ya tomorrow.
Today I woke up at 7 then went back to bed. I talk mostly about my game plan for tomorrow, November 4th.
The main part of this episode is me reflecting on a call I had today with a potential mentor. Felt really nice.
I was overall completely unprepared for both classes today, but I at least used the voice recorder I bought to record discussions and lectures from each class. I plan to use it a lot.
Today I found myself distracted during the art history lecture which made me want to get a voice recorder, during lunch I did just that.
Today's junior research class was productive. Sarah gave some advice to help me hone in on what I want to do, like doing a long term documentary project here and also focusing on one or two manipulations for next week. Great class today, focused, alert, engaged.
Today oddly flew by. I was editing in creative services all day, iterations in PIC, a prattler party, and editing for junior research. Tomorrow will need to be productive.
Today I was in the E Lab as a lab monitor, I am going back to the labs to work on homework for the rest of the evening.
Hello, today I actually got up and was productive in life. It felt great to be out and meet people and interact with the world around me and the people here at Pratt. Today has been a terrific day.
Today we went deeper into Quad Tone Rip in Digital Monochrome. This weekend will be my first without a smart phone, I hope to make good use of my time.
This morning's contemporary issues class was cancelled. I shot for the prattler during lunch, and I'm loving how minimal my nokia phone is. I have so much headspace because of it.
This morning was highly productive, I was focused on class, and I went to the Brooklyn museum for missing class last week. Tonight I have work as a lab monitor in which I plan to finish the Freud paper.
Today I bought a new phone to rid social media distractions and enjoy real life more. I also went to the MoMA to see an exhibition to write a paper on. The paper is due tomorrow for Art Since the 60s. There was no class today because today is Midterm Break.
Today I began my first day as a photo editor and photographer at Creative Services in Institutional Advancement.
Today the digital monochrome class has critique and then I stayed after to edit photos from Sunday's Print Making Workshop shoot.
Today I made a last minute presentation for junior research, I received a 91 for the grade.
Hello, as per usual on my fridays, had all the time in the world, and now it's bed time.
Superb day despite being sick. I have a new on campus job as a photographer and photo editor. First photo league meeting was a success.
Feeling like I'm becoming sick. Beautiful day today. I was engaged in art history this morning talking about site specific work, then I made sure to take pictures on my ride home. I left my phone in my room during work tonight and it boosted my productivity. I plan on doing that a lot more often.
Hello, today has turned out better than anticipated. My junior research class was more interactive and thoughtful than usual, and I learned, was reminded of, some important practices that are inherently simple: communicating and being gracious.
Today I talk mainly on how badly I need to stay focused on my homework to complete it all tonight.
Hello, the entirety of today was spent in the photo department as a lab monitor and for studying. I still have ti finish my Freud essay, finally in the flow of it.
We presented our varied output prints and then went over QTR: Quad Tone RIP. I have yet to start a paper due yesterday.
Today I had junior research and I felt good about the work I turned in to that class, everything after class was a blur.
The start of the new semester has faded on many people, possibly, probably including me. I do love it here at Pratt. I talk about helping people in the labs, PIC reflecting real life, Prattler energy, and productive homework time collecting images from the internet.
Yellow, today we went over HDR, Panorama, and Advanced black and white printing. The HDR and panorama was familiar, but advanced black and white technique was new to me.
Hello, today my group led a discussion in class and then we interpreted On Dreams in Freud Psychoanalysis. I picked up someone's lab monitoring shift for the extra hours.
Hello, today was a loooooong day. It starts with art since the 60s, then goes to uncomfortable subway pictures and long bike rides. Today people actually showed up to the digital labs. Work still needs to be done for tomorrow's Contemporary Issues in Photography and Freud Psychoanalysis.
Hello, today was a long day in junior research, but on the bright side I got to speak with a guy from California about his interest in pratt and photography. It was so fun to do that.
