In a church racked with divisions and doctrinal problems the Apostle Paul opens his Corinthian letter with the cross of Jesus Christ, the most necessary center of the gospel.
“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” – Ephesians 4:3-6 (NIV)
Baptism means, to be immersed.
We are to maintain the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Our unity is based on the theological oneness of God. Paul says in Ephesians 4:5 that there is one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. The one Lord is Jesus and the content of the one faith is the gospel Jesus (the one Lord and Savior). The one baptism is into the one Lord, Jesus(“in Christ”). We are immersed into Jesus and the Holy Spirit immerses us into the one body, the church (1 Cor 12:13). Baptism represents our union with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus (the gospel) and being united with all who put their trust in Christ.
Paul writes in Ephesians 4 that we maintain the unity of the Spirit. This is our calling as followers of Jesus. Believers are one in Christ and share one faith. The one faith is not the act of believing but what we choose to trust. There is only one thing that Christians choose to place their trust.
So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.” For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.
I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. – Romans 15:13 (NLT)
Since Jesus only has one body and the church of Christ forms his body together as one. It makes sense that there is only one Spirit for that one body. God is not divided and the body though having many parts is not divided as well. For in the Spirit we were all immersed into one diverse body. We are a new community in Christ with no separation due to wealth or race. The church is a Christ community where all drink from the same deep refreshing well of the Holy Spirit’s unity and power.
The triune God lives in union with himself. He is one. When God created everything, he made the earth, animals, and mankind one with him. When sin entered the world, division came with it. Through Jesus God gifts the earth with new creation and with the sending of the Holy Spirit mankind is brought into unity with God and with each other. We celebrate the oneness of God and the new creation of Jesus by maintaining the unity of the Spirit.
Holy Spirit gives us gifts to equip us for service, empowers us for mission, to build-up the body of Christ for common good.
She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing. – 2 Kings 4:5-6 (NIV)
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. - Galatians 5:24–26 (NIV)
And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. - Romans 5:5
God poured out his Spirit on his people on the day of Pentecost. When he poured out his Spirit, he poured into our hearts faith, hope, and love. God’s love poured into us through his Spirit is the fuel for following Jesus. Love is what compels us to share the gospel and serve others.
For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. - Isaiah 44:3
God promised his people that he would pour out his Spirit. With the prophet Joel, God said, “I will pour out my Spirit on all people.” In Acts 2, when Israel was gathered for the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) the Holy Spirit fell upon the followers of Jesus and the crowds heard them speak in each of their own languages. The disciples and Peter were telling the people of the wonders of God and the salvation that comes through Jesus Christ.
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. - Ephesians 6:17
A Roman soldier’s helmet was made of hardened leather and was strengthened with metal. They were meant to protect the soldier’s head from blows inflicted from the enemy.
In Ephesians 6, Paul says to “take the helmet of salvation.” He was writing to people who had received salvation through trusting in Jesus. The metaphorical helmet of salvation is a spiritual helmet, not to grant a person salvation, (Paul wasn’t saying take the helmet of salvation to be saved) but it was meant to protect the believer’s assurance of salvation.
At the end of 1 Samuel, Saul and his sons died in combat against the Philistines. In 2 Samuel, King David completes a long fight for the throne of Israel against the house of Saul. He rightfully claims the throne as God’s anointed. He rules for several years expanding Israel’s kingdom. He is a skilled military tactician and political leader, but we find that he is vulnerable with his family.
Stand firm then… with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. - Ephesians 6:15
A Christian’s identity is to be shaped by truth, righteousness, readiness, faith, salvation, and the gospel message. This is what Paul describes as the full armor of God.
Fit your feet with the readiness of peace. What we wear on our feet can help us to be ready to face stress and anxiety and the ways they manifest unhealthy spirituality.
Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, - Ephesians 6:14
Dr. David Jeremiah in his book “Overcomer” said, “that the breastplate of the common Roman soldier was a piece of armor made of hardened, reinforced leather. For an officer, the leather was covered with metal plating for extra protection. The breastplate covered the torso and protected the soldier’s vital organs—especially his heart. A warrior without his breastplate was vulnerable and dangerously exposed to the enemy.”

After David defeats Goliath he befriends Saul’s son Jonathan. They became best of friends. David stayed in the company of Saul and Saul gave him important military assignments. Each mission Saul sent him on was successful. All of Israel started to take notice.

As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. – Acts 8:36-38 (NIV)
Philip is instructed by an angel of the Lord to travel a desert road between Jerusalem and Gaza. While traveling he encounters an Ethiopian eunuch who was reading aloud from the prophet Isaiah (chapter 53:7-8). Through the Spirit’s guidance Philip teaches the eunuch about Jesus, the suffering servant in whom Isaiah prophesies.
They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” – John 12:13
Jesus enters into Jerusalem and the beginning of the Passover festival with much fanfare. Many have witnessed him raising dead Lazarus to life and are now whipped into a triumphant frenzy. The scene was typical for when a city would welcome a returning king from the victory of battle.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Ephesians 6:10-11 (NIV)

In Ephesians 6:1-9, the Apostle Paul addresses the Christian ethics of children, fathers, slaves, and masters. Paul appeals to children to honor their parents because it is right. Fathers are not to frustrate their children but nurture them in the ways of Jesus. Everything about our new life hinges on what God has done through Jesus. We gain a “new self” and a new attitude putting off our old self. It is by grace and love that we are made new and it is by grace and love that we live into our newness. In Jesus, you are made new. Become what you are.
