In 1961 Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's untouchable single season home run record and it took 37 years for it to be broken again. What seemed like this wonderful event for baseball was tarnished by the realization that steroids helped Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa surpass that record. Here is a documentary that came out in 1998:

This is one of my favorites! The Sonics guy joins me in studio as we interview and unpack Dennis Flannigan's story; a white Civil Rights worker that decided to go into Mississippi in 1964 (Freedom Summer) and do what he felt in his heart was the right thing to do. Please give this a listen and be inspired to continue this fight!
This is an important one, and a passionate one. We talk about MLK's, "I Have a Dream" speech from both a standpoint of the words he says, but also from the organization that took place. The speech is in my opinion the best speech ever made in American history, but the fact that in 1963 they were able to get 250,000 to see it live was absolutely incredible. It speaks to not only the tireless work of civil rights organizers, but also to the urgency of the movement itself, that this was important and needed to be dealt with, and that when you left the event you were going to be active in your community in making things better. So much respect, please listen to the words and understand the amount of work put in, and go out into your own lives as fighters, because it still is a fight!

Kenan and Kel decide they need to do an episode about the year 3000 so their show doesn't seem out of date to people in the future. We study more of the working class family through Roseanne and Dan Conner (not O'Connor's, sorry for the mistake!) How is this family similar to the Flintstones (see the last episode) and how are they different. Why is it important that working class folks got to watch this? I think a big reason is that it helped them feel understood, and helped them know that main stream America knew about their plight and their worries. Have a great week!

Use this source to also explore the fight for equality by women in the 1920's. Women were going to college but they still appeared to have very different experiences than men did. Would the woman in this film be able to easily obtain an electrical engineering degree? This film is so interesting because of all the new historical questions it brings up!

This is a fun one! We discuss an episode of Arthur in which he breaks his families computer. The episode does a great job of highlighting what types of tasks the family computer was used for when it first started becoming prominently used, but also shows the impact this newly accessible and user friendly machine could have on a family like the Reed's.

We tackle the famous 1980's Wendy's Training Video! Why the heck was it made and why was it important? Part of the answer can be found by studying the products of that time period! There is of course something interesting to be learned about race relations in the 80's as well, but that is something that an expert (not me) could explain but is an important issue to think about when watching. Although it isn't very historically accurate you can use this to understand how 1950's America chose to frame the Revolutionary War, and why that is important to understand that as current American's. We also get into issues of slavery, and how this episode chose to portray it, and what that says about America in the late 50's. This one will make your brain happy!

First I talk about the 4th of July coming up tomorrow! There is a marathon of this documentary on the History Channel called, "America, The Story of US." I would highly recommend seeing 1 or 2 of these tonight or tomorrow, they are pretty great! Think about why they produced it, and why they picked the specific stories they did! Professional History isn't usually about someone getting it right or wrong, it's more of what they choose to illuminate to illustrate the point they are trying to make. What did the History Channel choose to illuminate, and what story does that tell? Do you agree with the narrative they constructed, or do you think they could have illuminated something else way more, such as the trail of tears or the reconstruction era, to illustrate America in a more negative light. No matter what you think, it's important to respect this documentary for what it adds to the Historiography of our nation. Here is one of the more well done episodes in the series:

Omg, I got my packet for my membership into the Washington State Historical Society! It's exciting! You need to check out the Washington State History Museum as well as the Harmon Brewery!! I did not get payed to say this, my heart is just that big for these places!! (Especially the WSHM)

I'm in beautiful Ellensburg Washington this week, home of the Ellensburg Rodeo, woohoooooo! I talk about Fruitopia, Earth2o and meeting an engineer for the LA Water Department in New Dehli! So cool!!
Finally I talk about The Sims Bustin out, which is a Gameboy Advance game! I think it's important to realize how cool the study of history will be in the future, in that we can use really advanced video games (and more) made during the time period, to study how that time period lived, and what they liked! Wow!!!!

I started watching the first season of, "The Real World," which was the reality show that really jolted reality TV into what it became by 2008. I have only seen the first few episodes once, so I do not have full grasp on everything going down, but I will!! Oh I will!! =)
I talk a little bit about the 2005 classic, "Cinderella Man" (Paul Giamatti is soooooooo good!!) as well as this great used bookstore in Tacoma, "The Tacoma Book Center." If you are in Tacoma it's very much worth your time!

So I have this weird ringing in my ear and it started a book club! I'm gonna make the book club episode in 2 weeks (I know I said one but we should all have a bit more time to reflect) It's called, "The Cay" and was written for kids, by an American in 1969 talking about a white kid and a black man trapped on an island in I believe 1911 or so. A historical goldmine basically! Buy it on Amazon or just go to a library, do it! You have 2 weeks and then we discuss!
