Mission in 5: Recent Episodes

Greg Mamula

Welcome to Mission in 5 the Podcast, where I ask five simple questions to ministry practitioners to learn more about who they are and where they see God moving in their community. 1.Who are you? (Tell us a little bit about yourself) 2.How did you get here? (To your ministry setting) 3.What is happening at (ministry context)? 4.What is next? (What is next for the guest personally, professionally, or next for the ministry context) 5. How can we partner with you in mission and ministry?

Easter Benediction

In the dark of the early morning,

It descended.

The very breath of God.

Dawn approached.

The Spirit filled the lungs of our fallen king,

And his heart began to beat anew.

At the rising of the sun,

He awoke. He opened his eyes.

He smiled. He rose.

Victorious.

They say the tomb was empty,

But we know otherwise.

Sorrow and mourning. Left behind.

Fear and shame. Left behind.

Sin and death. Left behind.

Our old ways and our old selves. Left behind.

Forever entombed by Christ the Son.

He who has conquered the grave.

He who is risen.

He who reigns.

Halleluiah.

Worship shapes our faith and what we believe. Preparing each week for worship is challenging in the best of times. Since COVID pushed many of our in person experiences online, the challenges have been magnified. Yet we know that quality Christ centered worship is a feast for the soul.

Our special guest are the praise team from the American Baptist Church of FBC Gardner, KS. Because we have learned that consuming religious content is not the same thing as participating in Christian community, our conversation focuses on the theological as well as technical aspects to leading worship in this new landscape. FBC Gardner has done this better than most and I hope you are encouraged by our conversation.

Today's episode features the leadership of Verdad Y Vida--Truth and Life Baptist Church. Verdad y Vida was planted nearly 4 to minister the Latino Diaspora in Omaha land. While the congregation is united in its Spanish language, it is a very diverse multi-ethnic congregations with members representing various countries with unique cultures like Columbia, El Salvador, Mexico, Honduras, and Puerto Rico. So while Spanish provides a common language, there are cultural differences and difficulties that come with being a multi-ethnic congregation.

FBC Hunstville

Fresh Expressions: https://freshexpressionsus.org/

Fresh Expressions is an international movement of missionary disciples cultivating new kinds of church alongside existing congregations to more effectively engage our growing post-Christian society.

Beginning in 2004 as an initiative of the Church of England and the British Methodist Church, the movement has resulted in the birth of thousands of new communities in the UK alone and brought renewal to scores of established churches. The movement has spread to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Germany. In 2010, the movement began taking shape in the US through the vision and generosity of the Baptist General Association of Virginia and a growing number of partners committed to a new era of missional ecumenism, a unity around the mission of God the Father through the resurrected Son in the power of the Holy Spirit.

GO RED SOX! Just a quick note--at the time of this podcast the Red Sox had a 6-game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East! But as a sign of Baptist unity even a Yankee fan and a Red Sox fan can agree on Jesus and the mission of God.

Rev. Dr. Lee Spitzer is the General Secretary for the American Baptist Churches USA. Prior to becoming General Secretary, Dr. Spitzer served as Executive Minister and Senior Regional Pastor of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey for 14 years. He encouraged the region to journey as a Christ-centered, mission focused and pastoral (loving) community of churches. From this vision, many new ministries were developed. Dr. Spitzer brings to his new position decades of pastoral experience; he was pastor of First Baptist Church, Lincoln, Nebraska, the Seaview Baptist Church in Linwood, New Jersey, and the First Baptist Church in East Providence, Rhode Island. He was ordained as an American Baptist minister in 1981. His Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees are from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and in 2016, he was awarded a PhD degree in Theology from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the International Baptist Theological Study Centre.

Judson Press has published two books by Dr. Spitzer. Making Friends, Making Disciples (2010) explores how relationships impact our lives and the discipleship and evangelism ministries of churches. His newest book, Baptists, Jews and the Holocaust: the Hand of Sincere Friendship (2017), reveals how Baptists in the United States responded to Nazism, anti-Semitism and the Holocaust.
