The uncomfortable topic of hell is a subject that Jesus, surprisingly, spoke about more than anyone else in the Bible. There is a common disbelief in hell's existence. The central question emerges: How can a loving God condemn individuals to eternal suffering? God's love is inseparable from His justice, pointing to the cross as the embodiment of both. Without the reality of hell, God's justice, our freedom to choose, Jesus' truthfulness, the necessity of salvation, and the true nature of heaven would lose their significance. God doesn't abruptly switch from love to wrath. God's patience and provision of escape reassure us. Knowing and fearing God ultimately eliminate other fears.

God created humans in his image to rule. Sin distorts God’s glory in our image-bearing. Only a king who flawlessly bears God’s image can carry God’s full glory to creation, vanquishing the personal, social, and cosmic effects of sin. Jesus is the saving king. He preexisted with God the Father. In accordance with God’s promises, Jesus became human in the line of David, died for our sins, was buried, was resurrected on the third day, was seen, was installed as king at God’s right hand, sent the Spirit, and will return to rule. Is there anything that you would add or remove from this definition of the gospel?
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. - Acts 4:12
What is the gospel? How can we be reconciled with Christ and how can we participate in his death burial and resurrection?

Roman’s 8: 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
How do we join the Spirit in mission? How do we fly in dependence on him and not waddle in our own strength?

For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.”Galatians 5:16-26 ESV
1) Is it consistent with God's word? Not only actual verses but the underlying principles of the word and of God's character (2 Timothy 3:16)?2) Does it bring life? Does it heal? God's word is more life giving than our words (John10:10)?3) Do we experience His thoughts Higher than our thoughts? Does it bring different and better insight and quality, deeper clarity, understanding and revelation (Isaiah 55:8)?4) Does it pass the peace/shalom test of Col 3:15? Do you feel greater peace?5) Does it bear other fruit? (Galatians 5:22)• Immediate: resolution, peace, love, excitement, awe, clarity• Long-term: Attitudes and expectations are more God-centered6) God's confrontations are gentle and caring (Matthew 11:29-30; Romans 8:1)?• Jesus' admonitions to those who want to follow are gentle and caring• Harsh condemnations are from our own background or the accuser7) Check with your community (assuming it is healthy for confirmation. Do otherChristians recognize is as coming from God and in line with God's word and character?Check it out with 2-3 trusted advisors (disciples of Jesus), before you act on something you've heard that impacts your life or your relationships in any significant way, such as moving to another location, changing jobs, leaving a relationship (Prov. 27:17, Matthew18:19, Col 3:15). If another Christian senses it's not from God, ask them why. Pray for discernment on both your parts, as this could be an area of growth for both. Check things out with your leaders especially when that decision may affect others in the church community.8) Does it draw us nearer to God and glorify God (Hebrews 10:22; James 4:8; I Corinthians10:31)?9) Is it supported by circumstances and reality? Does it come true over time (Ephesians 5:15;Romans 8:28)?10) Does it ring true in your heart when you interact with God and the Holy Spirit in prayer (Romans 8:1, 26; John 14:26)?11) Does it line up with our past experience of hearing God? As we become more familiar with God's heart through our own experience and through the ways His heart is revealed in Scripture, we recognize it better. (I John 2:5).
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. - John 16:7-15 ESV
“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened. For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old. When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, “‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. So that you also may know how I am and what I am doing, Tychicus the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord will tell you everything. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage your hearts. Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible.” Ephesians 6:18-24 ESV

In ALL circumstances [except when you don’t feel like it] take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,” Ephesians 6:10-18 ESV
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. What are the heart traits of the called? Do we treat relationships and unity with the same worth that Christ does? It doesn’t sound fun to be commanded to have long-suffering and bear with one another, but the spirit designed it this way to reveal our hearts. We will learn about the bond of peace in Ephesians 4:2-4. Application: Do others perceive you as thinking you have it all together and do not need help, or do you endear yourself to others and build unity through your humility by getting wise counsel and input for your life? Is there anyone with whom you are not completely unified? What further steps can you take to make every effort to be unified with that person? In your relationships how can you shoot the gap? How can you partner and bind together in sharing the gospel?
How do we walk in a manner worthy of our calling? There is a life that fits with the grace God has given us. This new life isn’t a mystery. It is simply a choice. We will look at the destiny that Paul, a prisoner of the Lord, outlines for us in Ephesians 4:1-2. With your discipleship partner or group, this week, ask each other for feedback on your walk: Is fellowship an onerous commitment you’ve made, or one of joy, having friends who are more like family? After church events, do you talk about the things and people you love and ways that you can better serve, better build the Kingdom and contribute - or do you have criticisms? Which is better for your heart and others’ heart?
Unity is hard-forged and God knows it! He planned it that way. Walk with the same passion for Unity and relationships that we find in God himself. This walk isn’t a mystery, it’s a choice to be ALL IN Together.

Ephesians 2:11-12, 1 Peter 3:15
In the first three chapters of Ephesians there is only one imperative command: “Remember”. When asked why you’ve been sent, like Isaiah are you ready to honor the Lord with holy, holy, holy, and can you remember the way you were in the world in a way that brings God glory and others even closer to Jesus?
We all have a disillusionment list. You have to make a decision. Will you allow sorrow to transform you? Will you bring it to God, and remember him in your story? Will you base your joy in the Lord or in circumstances? Will you allow a bitter root to distance you from future relationships, or distance you from God? Or will you fight even harder, press on deeply rooted in Christ Jesus?

Griefiing breaks our self will for Gods will, like Jesus weeping in the garden it enables us to take the cup going forward.
- It isn’t easy. It isn’t comfortable. It’s likely triggering, which may be a signal that that is exactly the thing that requires some time, focus, and spiritual formation.
- Handle past loss in Christ. Jesus is King, not triggers, not grief, don’t let these things obstruct your view of the King in your past!
- Journaling, listening to the Holy Spirit within. Ask. Seek. Pray. Think. Cleanse. Seek!
Numbers 13:30-33
confucius once said he who says he can’t and he who says he can are both usually right.
Your expectations, your vision of God and vision of your past will change your actions and change your reality.
- You will hear many say “I can’t do this” in 2022 — “I can’t meet, I can’t focus on God right now, I can't study the bible, I can't share the gospel”
- You have to decide what kind of disciple you’re going to be. Can you do what’s never been done before? Will you hold back and stay in the camp or advance spiritually with greater vision?
- “But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.” 1 Timothy 6:6
Look at the gains not the gap, to reframe your past with gratitude.
- So in your past, how has the Lord established your steps?
- Better to be uncomfortable and in tune with the Lord, than to be comfortable and out of step with God.

Let’s Rediscover…Refresh…Reclaim our Vision of God and God’s vision for you!
Your vision of God shapes everything you do. If you have a lesser vision of God, you will do less for God in life. God has a greater vision and wants us to do greater things.
A clear vision of God can give us a clear vision for our life, “here am I send me”
Ephesians 3:17-21
God wants us to be deeply rooted in him. I believe that he wants us to be so deeply rooted and connect with /Christ, that we also have a clear vision of God in our lives.
Ephesians 1:18, 2 Kings 6:15-17, Proverbs 29:18
God has a greater vision, but will we choose to see it?
When God speaks, are you ready to hear what he has to say? What story is he writing?
Our hearts were molded to live in God’s larger story, his greater vision, not to be choked out in the third soil.
Luke 1:31-37
When how is out of sight is it tempting to put what out of mind.
Mary had to believe in the greater vision of God.
The gospel message is the proclamation that Jesus is King
Don’t exchange the greater for the lesser or easier.
With Lesser vision- Rather than believing that Jesus is King, and his word never fails, We tend to believe what we expect.
It really comes down to what is the future that we live in expectation of. Is it one in God’s presence, living as a subject in his kingdom until he fully restores the cosmos?
Do not let the question of “how?” Trump the fact that Jesus is King and his word will never fail.
Mark 1:1, 15
Jesus gives vision to the first disciples of who they could become by following him, it’s also our identity as disciples “be become do”.
They had a great response to a great vision. They were not underwhelmed.
Gospel vision: Jesus is King. Gospel response - repentance, forgiveness, discipleship.
Repent and believe the Kingdom vision.
When Jesus is our King, we have a greater vision of God. Is your Jesus too small?
When Jesus becomes your King, you will take responsibility for your stubborn refusal to believe in God’s power.
Isaiah 6:1-8
God inspired visions lead back to God. We should not be the focal point.Isaiah saw the vision of God, and ended up getting a vision and mission for himself! In the same way, having a clear view of God helps us to know what to do as well! Some ways that you can see God more clearly for spending time reading his word, praying for God to show himself to you, and talking to others about how they see God.
What will you do to see God more clearly in your life?
Pray for God to help you see him more clearly, it may clear his vision for you!

Ephesians 3:12-19
“12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him. 13 So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you, which is your glory. 14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
- What are the riches of his glory? How are we “strengthened through the spirit”? How can we imitate Paul’s prayer? Those who want their actions to be effective for god’s Kingdom should redouble their efforts on prayer.
- If we’ve grasped it, how could we not go to our knees?
- Simple practical, do you pray after you read your Bible?
- Don’t be deceived. Fervent prayer produces fervent action.
- When you gather for payer, do you pray this way? So do we pray like Paul or pray like the world does?
- Do you pray for a house, marriage, income, food, forgiveness or do you pray for the riches of his glory?
- Colossians 1:27 - “To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
- Philippians 4:19 - “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
- Ephesians 1:5-7 “he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,”
- What are we strengthened by and for?
- If we aren’t praying for strengthening, if you aren’t experiencing the fullness of Christ, could you be relying on our own strength?
- You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus,” - 2 Timothy 2:1
- “I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service,” 1 Timothy 1:12
What is the inner person?
- “16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” - 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
What is the state of your fire, your boldness and how are you feeding it?
unique seasons in your life will require unique changes, and assertiveness in your relationship with God. A unique aggressiveness, a unique boldness. How bold are you in your relationship?
How are you feeding your soul, and feeding the souls of others? When we gather are you replenished because you’ve been in the presence of God?
A vibrant, passionate, intimate relationship with God, that results in a contagious, countercultural, and commemorative life.
7 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power. 8 Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, 9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11 according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. 13 I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.
What is the mystery? How does it astonish the heavenly realms? Why does it bring Paul to his knees in prayer, and why does he seek to glorify others while he is in chains?
- Heavenly beings are absolutely shocked when we come together as the church. Are you?
- Do we need fancy lights, energetic music, elaborate videos, sharp people, the latest resources, ways to meet my needs, the best friend group and the smartest teachers for me to consume,… do we need that to be in awe?
- like the 1st century church are we willing to lay down our lives to be a part of the body, a mystery that has nothing more than the pure unadulterated gospel?
- While it isn’t about you, never think of yourself as small and insignificant. You have a high standing, seated in the heavenly places, to approach God with freedom and boldness, how will you then use that standing?
- Don’t lose heart, you are part of something great and eternal.
- Paul says “my pain, your gain” and the church embraced that same attitude.
- your glory is that the wisdom of God is being made known through this family, the church.
- Jesus suffered for this. Paul suffered for this.
- So that the church could play a glorious role. So that we can be suffering people of boldness and confidence who magnify Christ.
- We can embrace this attitude. Taking up our cross to reveal his wisdom.
Ephesians 3:7-9 ESV
7 Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God's grace, which was given me by the working of his power. 8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things
Do we believe in the power of the gospel? Is the good news good news?
Has this gospel made you a servant?
What is the gospel? how does it humble Paul to become a minister in the first place?
2 Cor. 1:6,8-9
Paul sees things on the cosmic level, while he endures prison.
1 Timothy 1:12-15
grace overflowed with faith and love in Christ for the Foremost sinner. He was showed mercy. Considered trustworthy and saved by Jesus, the gospel. ‘Poured out abundantly’. You want to experience a tsunami of grace, forgiveness and humility are the beginning ripples. let go of the you that you cling to, dive in. Obey the call of the you that is in Christ and seated in the heavenlies.
It's not a problem to see yourself as a very flawed human being, as long as you quickly see through God's grace you can be a significant human being.
Acts 20:24
How has God’s grace worked in you? How has it put you into the ministry?
Paid unpaid, part time full time, young, old, professional, retiree, trainee … we are all disciples first. Otherwise we are off mission.
You can’t accomplish his plan on your own or with your own plans!
God will raise you up, sink every morning Into the death of Jesus. Let his life be manifest.
Ephesians 3:1-6
Why break the first sentence off? How is Paul getting distracted in his own thinking?
“I am in prison on your behalf, you gentiles” - what a cliff hanger!
What is the mystery God is revealing?
It has been planned by God for you to be United
As Christ was revealed to Paul, the plan for the gentiles was revealed all the more clearly.
He gets sucked into the vortex of grace. Have you ever felt grace like that?
To be closer to God was to be in chains for the gentiles.
Has the message of Jesus caused you to drastically change your attitude toward any group of people? Or perhaps a type of person? Or perhaps someone in this room?
There is a costly nature to this mystery. A costly nature to this grace, and a costly nature to this united church.
It will personally cost you. Is a united church your commitment or your convenience?
Have you counted that cost?

These things are meant to be illuminated, and perceived by reading, not to remain a mystery.
God can only reveal as much as will be received.
Reading should be transformative.
If you don’t fall in love with this text, you won’t make it.
How can we hope to equip others, if we do not equip ourselves?

Paul is in prison on their behalf, not their fault.
Paul endures prison because he is focused on others.
Unity over self.
When we are bonded to Christ, we are bonded to his mission..
Christ came not for his own sake, but for the sake of others.
Mark 10:45, 2 Corinthians 8:9, Corinthians 4:5-6
How are you becoming poor so that those on your left and right can become rich?
Paul was poor, homeless, imprisoned, convicted as a criminal following a savior who was the same.
Turn to the person on your left and right, and say “I will suffer for you, I will honor and glorify you.”
How do we anchor ourselves more deeply into this text, more deeply into one another, and more deeply into the grace of God? Read the text, share the gospel, and remember unity over self.

What does it mean to be a citizen and a member?
What are the ecclesiastical minimums for church that we see in Ephesians?
- Christ must be the cornerstone
- It must be on the foundation of the revelation of the apostles and prophets
- Living out the awkward sides hugs
1 corinthians 3:11 “For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
Ephesians 4:11-12 “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,”
Who are the three people you’re closest with in the church?
Were you close at one time but need to rekindle?
Eph. 4:15-16 “15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”
grown into building joined and held together. We are maturing in love.
It is the joining of parts by which the growing happens. It isn’t just Christ and then a finished product. We are actively fitting together.
Although God ultimately causes our growth, God has chosen the community to facilitate that growth. They speak the truth in love to one another.
We are a holy temple. It’s not about your preference, it’s about God’s presence.
When you become a disciple of Jesus, you become a one another.
The local church family is not marginal or optional or replaceable.
Pray and thank you God for the opportunity to be part of his family, and asked him to use use you to make others feel welcomed in it.

What relationship do you have in the kingdom of God that you would have likely never had outside of Christ?
Would you be my friend if I wasn’t a Christian? Do I have value beyond my usefulness to the organization?
Do others feel welcome to this family?
If Jesus died on the cross to eliminate this hostility, then what are you doing to eliminate it? What are you doing to tear down the walls that get built up between us?
Have you ever felt like a foreigner, even in the Fellowship of the church? Who do you know who might feel like that now? What will you do to tear down the wall?
v15, see Romans 6:14,10:4, Gal. 2:21 no longer under the law!
“Into Christ, one new humanity” Eschatologically - “the now and not yet” - an important tool for reading through Ephesians. It’s important to not under realize or over realize this, but rather let scripture define what Christ has inaugurated in this present age. [ex. Judaizing the gentiles on circumcision would be under realizing. Over realizing could quickly become false doctrine as well, 2 Timothy 2:18]
Eph. 1:7, 1:14, 4:30, Col. 1:14, Rom. 8:23) already and not yet redeemed

Galatians 3:24-29, 4:28
All of those who have been baptized into Christ are the true children of God through faith
They have clothed themselves with Christ and are “all one with Christ.” Our heirship transcends ethnic, social, and gender barriers. Here too the goal is still in process.
Paul will give us very specific instructions for how we are to be humble to one another in this present age.
How? by the blood of Christ… in his flesh… through the cross… through him.
How does your life reflect what Christ died for?
How do you see the bride of Christ, bought with his blood?
Tear down the wall. Remember that we were children of wrath in need of reconciliation ourselves! Now we need to reconcile with others, how do we welcome others to this family?
Rely on his Spirit to be ONE. When we follow the word of God, we are led by the spirit of God. Eph. 1:13-14,1:16-17, 3:16-19, 4:1-3
We can only get ride of the wall of separation by humbly responding to his spirit, grace.
Stop playing Christian dress up, and realize you’ve been clothed with Christ.
If two people are in Christ; they are family.
Do we place our Christianity or our cultural identity first?
Remember, that we have it better now. We are children of God!
Do you long for the things before, when you were without hope?

Nehemiah 2:17-18 - "Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, “Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work."

4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture:

a cornerstone chosen and precious,

7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

and a rock of offense.”
They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Philippians 3:1-10 addresses how we can rejoice, even when the gospel is opposed. Our joy is based off of appreciation of Jesus. Here Paul warns against the legalists, who do not appreciate Jesus.
How do we let our light shine? We hold out the word of life and conquer "grumbling and complaining".
How do we marry God's grace with out responsibility? How do we work out our salvation with fear and trembling and how does God work in us to will and to act? This lesson is on Philippians 2:12-13.
Is the gospel worth it? Jesus initiated first, loving us, and deeming us worthy.
A life deemed worthy of the gospel, is one in which disciples are unified with each other.
The world needs to see the kind of family and friendships that are produced by the gospel.
Are we pressing into Christ together, chasing him together with Fearless faith and radical unity? Fearlessly face that question.
Did Paul love his partners in the gospel, the church in Phillipi because they had it all together, or because they pretended to be perfect? No! Paul loved them for who they were, and who they were becoming in Christ v.6.
Consider the slave girl in Phillipi from Acts 16. She didn't DO anything for Paul, but he loved her and healed her, even though he was imprisoned and tortured for it. No, the church was not perfect, but Paul was confident that if they remained in Christ, then Jesus would finish the work he started in them.
Fullness of life doesn’t depend on circumstances, but by the God you know and how deeply you understand His love.
Paul felt affectionate towards the disciples in Philippi because they worked together, prayed together, suffered together, and celebrated the victories together. Only when we have been in the trenches with others will we have relationships that are full of life.
Paul was a man who couldn't be conquered. If they killed him then “to die is gain”. If they tortured him then he would not count the present suffering as worthy to even compared to the Future Glory. If he dies he gets to be with Jesus. If you want to make him suffer, he is cool with that, because it makes him like Jesus. If you let him live, he’s cool with that, because for him “to live is Christ”.
The jailer in Acts 16 had totally defined his identity and destiny by his career, bound to the Roman empire. Paul shows him a better identity; a more fulfilling destiny; greater duty that transcends everything this guy's previously known. There are similar people today who cannot think of themselves except by what they do.
The Gospel creates a new reality that deepens our understanding of the world and our place in it. The response to radical grace is a radical commitment, in which we define our identity and our destiny not by what we do but by being disciples of Jesus.
In Philippians 1, Paul prayed consistently and specifically for his partners in Philippi. He prayed for their love, knowledge, discernment, purity, and depth of insight. Do not be so self consumed in your own prison or situation, that you miss the opportunities to encourage the partners around you.
For me, I am pushed to self reliance when I worry, and I am robbed of the joy of discipleship with others. Partner in the gospel in practice, not just on paper! Who is in your heart? There is more to accomplish together, that we could never accomplish alone.
